Shock: House passes Tancredo measure to deny emergency funds to sanctuary cities

He’s offered similar proposals at least seven times in the past three years and they’ve always failed by big margins. Today? 234-189, with no fewer than 49 Democrats voting in favor. The Rocky Mountain News says all sides are “stunned”; his own press release describes him as “exuberant.” Not necessarily because he thinks the Senate’s going to pass this but because of a certain Larger Truth that might just have materialized. From the RMN:

Tancredo said he thinks his amendment is an indicator that the House would crush the reform plan [i.e., amnesty bill] if it passes in the Senate.

“If I were (Speaker of the House) Nancy Pelosi, I’d be asking if she could pass a vote on amnesty on the House side,” Tancredo said. “If she lost 50 Democrats on this one, and she says she needs 70 Republicans to pass the immigration plan, this is an interesting indicator of things coming down the pike, and that the times, they are a-changing.”

Follow the first link and read Noam’s post. Exit question: Did Tancredo just slay the dragon?

Tanc is da man. This isn’t the end of ShAmnesty of course but it is a body blow to the open borders movement, a sign that there are people on the hill, from both parties, that hear the voters. Thanks Tancredo for leading the charge.

Buzzy on June 15, 2007 at 7:33 PM

Something like colleges who don’t allow recruiters won’t get federal R&D money?

Tom McLaughlin on June 15, 2007 at 4:24 PM

I know they threatened to cut some colleges off, but school administrations are still allowing students to run off the military, and so far as I’ve heard no school has been denied funds yet.

It would be wonderful if this became law. If there was another ice storm, and Bangor was given assistance while Portland was denied it?

Oh, that’s just a beautiful thought.

Slublog on June 15, 2007 at 6:53 PM

But will they give the extra to Gorham, Standish, Sebago and other nearby towns to rub Portland’s nose in it? That would take the “beautiful thought” and turn it into art.

Laura on June 15, 2007 at 7:40 PM

Another Mainer?

And yes, that would be art. I wonder if it would count toward the mandated one percent, though?

Slublog on June 15, 2007 at 7:49 PM

Yeah, he’s a little kooky, but I love that guy. The funny thing is that I used to feel that way about McCain.

Pablo on June 15, 2007 at 5:59 PM

Compare their voting records, and you can lose the worry that there’s any similarity to McCain. One is squishy, one is not.

Freelancer on June 15, 2007 at 7:51 PM

Another Mainer?

No, I’m from N’awlins and that’s where I am again, but I’ve also lived in Maine (Sebago Lake, and a teeny little town called E. Baldwin) and I dearly love it. It has to be the most beautiful state in the country.

Laura on June 15, 2007 at 7:55 PM

It’s about time. IMO, they should cut all federal funding from these sanctuary cities who defy obeying federal laws. It’s ridiculous. Since when is it alright to pick and choose which laws people have to obey?

Very happy to finally get some good news on the illegal immigration front. Now all we have to do is have the government actually enforce the laws they pass. Radical concept. Apparently the government also chooses which laws need to be obeyed and let others slide. Appalling.

katieanne on June 15, 2007 at 7:55 PM

Laura on June 15, 2007 at 7:55 PM

From Maine to N’awlins? Quite a jump.

Sebago is a beautiful part of the state. Never been to E. Baldwin, though.

It’s unfortunate that this beautiful state is run by amnesty-loving Dems and RINOS.

Slublog on June 15, 2007 at 8:00 PM

From Maine to N’awlins? Quite a jump.

I have a boatload of family in Maine and I sometimes think my relatives are the only conservatives in the state. :-) Good to know there are a few others of you out there. At least you can make Baldacci work for it a little bit.

Laura on June 15, 2007 at 8:14 PM

Well, we scared the “Bald Nazi” into looking at tax cuts with TABOR. As much as I love it up here, though, I’ll have to move if property taxes get much higher.

Slublog on June 15, 2007 at 8:16 PM

Yeah, definitely, fellow Mainahs. Fund emergencies in Bangor, Sebago, East Baldwin, etc. and don’t fund anything that happens in Portland. Ask the illegals in that sanctuary city to do the jobs the liberal Portlanders don’t want to do. See what happens. I love it.

Allah must look at every newspaper in the country. Searching Fox, CNN, etc. I can’t find this story anywhere. However while looking I stumbled across this article. There’s still hope.

tomas on June 16, 2007 at 8:19 AM

with no fewer than 49 Democrats voting in favor

This is liberals’ scheming returning to bite them. Their strategy was to run all these conservative Democrats last election in the South and West and have them beat Republicans. . .and then trick gullible Americans though the MSM into thinking they had a far-left mandate to raise taxes, grant amnesty, pull out of Iraq, etc.

Americans weren’t as gullible as they thought, and now they are “stunned.” Wishy washy “moderate” Republicans better take note.

januarius on June 16, 2007 at 9:18 AM

What we have always believed and always knew, the rest of the country is catching on…secure the borders first, then we talk about the other problems.

Control the situation by first eliminating sanctuary, then we can begin to evaluate the internal problems.
Secure the borders, then identify the illegal aliens, register them, and then we can analyze what step to take and how drastic it needs to be. Case by case…takes ten years? so what.

right2bright on June 16, 2007 at 9:49 AM

Here are the NO votes on the Tancredo amendment. The Tancredo amendment bars Homeland Security funds being given to sanctuary cities. Ask your congressman below why he thinks a sanctuary city in flagrant violation of immigration laws should receive any federal funding.

It is not too early to put pressure on the House ro stop the shamnesty bill.

I think I’ll support to nominate and vote for the first upper-tier candidate who says “Tancredo will be my Homeland Security chief” because I know he’ll kick some serious butt at getting things done.

It’s a dumb bill. Cities can remove their “sanctuary city” proclamations but not make any real chances in enforcement policy. It doesn’t actually mandate any real change, it simply mandates a change of rhetoric. The reason it passed is because it doesn’t really DO anything. Plus there might be some pork attached someplace.

It’s so rare that a story like this gets ink, Tancredo’s own office believes its a “double victory” for winning the votes AND getting published (at least once).

Sadly ,almost no one else is running this story, but the Rocky Mountain News did. ( unusual for lefty owned RMN)

Here.

About freaking time someone put some teeth into this … geesh, in the 70’s when Wyoming said “no” to the mandatory 55mph speed limit it didn’t take but a few days for the Feds to threaten to cut off highway funds. The crux of this whole problem is not a lack of means, but entirely a lack of will … Go Tranc!

With public opinion being as strong as it is against the bill I always wondered why it was considered a sure bet that it would pass the House. They might as well hand out pink slips to the majority of Representatives that vote for it.

bj1126 on June 15, 2007 at 3:50 PM

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the Senate is the jackass brigade of the Senate and thus assume that the House is just as bad.

Wolfman on June 16, 2007 at 7:15 PM

As might be clear, the second time I said ‘Senate’, I meant Congress.

Wolfman on June 16, 2007 at 7:16 PM

Ya know, if every immigrant magically becomes legal, no “sanctuary city” will suffer consequences from this amendment.

Big S on June 16, 2007 at 9:49 PM

Just in case you missed it on the post regarding Reid’s shady tactics, I am saying it on this post too…

Well folks, sad news. The March for America was overwhelmingly small today. There were several signs and American flags, but sadly only about 100 people, if even that many. While it was a better turnout than Thursday’s, which only produced about 30 people, it wasn’t much better.

The speakers were on point and had good messages. There were several cops there and I don’t know if that’s standard or if they were expecting more people. A few college-aged guys from California wandered over to check it out, as well as other passersby, and they were very nicely told what we were doing there and why it was important. At least word is getting out to those who already don’t know how catastrophic this amnesty could turn out for America.

Keep calling, e-mailing, writing, faxing, whatever, do everything you can!!

hollygolightly on June 16, 2007 at 10:06 PM

Sanctuary cities are a perversion of the Biblical sanctuary cities provided for the purpose of giving a person a fair hearing – chipping away at the custom of “blood debt” that persists in and makes the Middle East today so nasty.

The Left always twists decent concepts into perverted forms. Any city that operates with “sanctuary” rules that hinder law enforcement should lose a lot more federal funding than just FEMA. All of it, plus prison time for the political and bureaucractic tools who are not upholding their oaths of office.
This goes beyond illegal aliens, this is the foundation of the “Rule of Law” that American society depends on for every single transaction in every single day.
It’s travesties like this that are part and parcel of why Third World countries are the way they are. They don’t have Rule of Law.

pat on June 17, 2007 at 4:23 AM

Veto what? He is not in the decision-making loop regarding this amendment. If it gets added to the final bill, getting the President to veto the full bill because of the Tancredo amendment would be perfect, because a brand new bill would have to go back through the full process again. This one would be finally dead, presuming that the veto couldn’t be overriden, and currently, it couldn’t.

Wish we could have done that here in Wisconsin! Had control of both houses of the state legislature and a RINO leader of the senate wouldn’t bring our version of the Tax Payer Bill of Rights Amendment to a vote to protect the rest of the RINOs. She got defeated handily (80-20) in her primary a couple of months later but we couldn’t get it passed in 2 straight years before the Dems took over the senate last year.

Now our governor Doyle is raising every tax and fee besides income tax and the Dems haven’t shoot a single one down. Republicans in the assembly have been talking tough about opposing all tax increases but a few RINOs we’re not too sure about!

SSG Fuzzy on June 18, 2007 at 2:27 PM

I called my Rep (Reichert), and told him he’s lost my vote, that he’s been on the wrong side of this too many times, and this is the last straw.

I had such hopes for him.
