Breaking: Disgrace to his profession apologizes, resigns as D.A.; Update: Video added

“Too little, too late,” says one of the Duke lax attorneys. Stand by for video.

Update: He did it for the community. Which may, “in some respects,” have suffered because of his own actions.

Update: Your quote of the day:

“It has become increasingly apparent, during the course of this week, in some ways that it might not have been before, that my presence as the district attorney in Durham is not furthering the cause of justice,” Nifong said.

In some that it might not have been before?

Lawyers sueing lawyers….in three, two, one….

locomotivebreath1901 on June 15, 2007 at 4:00 PM

First step.

Now disbar the disgraceful sack of skin, hand him some hard time (preferably in GenPop with a lot of the perps he helped put behind bars) and hit him with damages, punitive and otherwise, to the point where he’ll have to sell options on his organs to pay just the interest on them.

Oooooh, I’m liking this!

Misha I on June 15, 2007 at 4:04 PM

This man s/b resented for his disgrace, injustice and for potentially costing the taxpayers millions and millions in what’s yet to come. All in the name of power…

Entelechy on June 15, 2007 at 4:04 PM

But hey, at least he won the election.

James on June 15, 2007 at 4:05 PM

Oh! what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive!

TheBigOldDog on June 15, 2007 at 4:06 PM

I can’t decide whether this is more or less appalling than crying over a $54M pair of pants.

World B. Free on June 15, 2007 at 4:08 PM

It catches up with you, doesn’t it?

Looks like he finally did something right in all this.

World B. Free on June 15, 2007 at 4:08 PM

If there really were such a thing, I’d cry over them too.

James on June 15, 2007 at 4:09 PM

You know this means that every single person he prosecuted can now appeal. Damn if I wouldn’t. And where do the falsely accused go to get back their reputatuions and lives?

LakeRuins on June 15, 2007 at 4:11 PM

He should go to jail.

Alex K on June 15, 2007 at 4:13 PM

It would have been MUCH more sincere if he had not used his TV time to do it. He waited until his 2nd or 3rd day of television coverage to announce. Cynical.

labwrs on June 15, 2007 at 4:15 PM

Now, let’s have the lefty professors who slimed the lacrosse players resign from Duke.

Tantor on June 15, 2007 at 4:15 PM

Well this settles it, the duke boys really were innocent because the super wealthy never have perverted justice.
O.J. really was innocent and Paris really did have a life threatening illness that required her to be released from jail after serving 3 days of a 45 day sentence.

doriangrey on June 15, 2007 at 4:22 PM

Oh, how those super-wealthy are able to generate DNA-free semen! Damn them!!!

Jeffersonian on June 15, 2007 at 4:26 PM

To make everything right, whoever ran against him in the last (race-baiting) election should be appointed the new D.A.

fogw on June 15, 2007 at 4:30 PM

He held his dealt cards, checked, waited for the flop, and the hearings weren’t going his way, so he folded. Texas Hold’em!

He also probably secured a profitable retirement with his resignation before getting the axe being removed/recalled and getting nothing. I hope he’s still subject to disbarment, but I don’t care enough anymore to check it out and see.

SilverStar830 on June 15, 2007 at 4:33 PM

Now? Now?! NOW he resigns?!

“DNA-free semen”
There’s a topic for a good sci-fi story…

Tow his car. Take his house key. Point to the city limits.
Forgotten. Enjoy. Sorry bub, I don’t have any jobs open for you at the moment.

Scumbag. I hope he goes to prison.

Next up: Johnny Sutton, who deserves far worse.

There is.

I think the court needs to tally up all the punishments that the young men he accused would have received if convicted and sentence Nifong with that. How’s that for justice?

Fitzfong next.

RushBaby on June 15, 2007 at 4:50 PM

Yep, because there is no such thing as evidence tampering…

doriangrey on June 15, 2007 at 4:45 PM

Where do you get off insinuating that the accused (or other parties on their behalf) tampered with the evidence? Do you have even one shred of your own to back that assertion up, or are you just another Nancy Grace/Wendy Murphy follower pissed off about the “rush to innocence”?

thirteen28 on June 15, 2007 at 4:51 PM

Now give us your law license, too. Dingbat.

Are you sure? Hard to tell in light of the sarcasm in this post:

There’s still lots of suing to be done. And that stripper took 300 bucks from them boys for a service that she never performed.

BelchSpeak on June 15, 2007 at 5:32 PM

He’s going to be disbarred… which means he will be fired… so he’s giving up what? Pardon me if I fart in his general direction.

DANEgerus on June 15, 2007 at 5:33 PM

Nifong should be in jail.

You’re doing a pretty good impression of a Loose Change-style conspiracy theory.

baldilocks on June 15, 2007 at 5:44 PM

It’s time to pile on this opportunistic, race-baiting, power hungry, morally reprobate, sorry excuse for a public servant.

*waving the starter flag* “Gentlemen, start your lawsuits…”

We can never get an apology out of the Sharptons and Jacksons of the world but this is a start.

In response to Jeffersonian’s “Oh, how those super-wealthy are able to generate DNA-free semen! Damn them!!!” dg said “Yep, because there is no such thing as evidence tampering…”

Aw, hell, the more I look at it, the more I get confused.

Presumptuous of me to speak for him. Hopefully dg will drop back by and speak for himself.

And Happy Aloha Friday to everyone, BTW!

RushBaby on June 15, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Does anyone find it scary that our public officials can just go off the deep end. Think if the defendants could not have afforded good lawyers what would have happened.

Remember, the guys judging him on the bar investigation are also………………….lawyers.

navy1946 on June 15, 2007 at 6:11 PM

Heh. I hardly recognized the ba$tard without the familiar smirk on his face.

Glad he’s out. Now I want to see him in—an orange jumpsuit

conservativecaveman on June 15, 2007 at 7:11 PM

Okay, any real lawyers out there? Will he lose his law license? He only resigned as DA, does that mean he can keep it?

rightside on June 15, 2007 at 7:12 PM

My bet is he WILL lose the license. This is way too high profile and too many people would be crawling all over that Board if they didn’t take it from him.

Now…let’s talk fines, jailtime and LOTS AND LOTS OF SUITS!

Good riddance, Nifong, you dishonest, race-baiting, lying, cheating bastard!

tickleddragon on June 15, 2007 at 7:38 PM

doriangrey,

What’s up? You still think they were guilty? In spite of ZERO damning evidence, and PILES of exculpatory evidence? In spite of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or more different and inconsistent stories from the victimaccuser? In spite of an outside investigation that has now proved Nifong’s prosecution to be invalid and malicious?

Well, you’re still welcome to your opinion, fact-free as it may be.

Freelancer on June 15, 2007 at 8:04 PM

What’s up? You still think they were guilty? In spite of ZERO damning evidence, and PILES of exculpatory evidence? In spite of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or more different and inconsistent stories from the victim accuser dirty lying whore? In spite of an outside investigation that has now proved Nifong’s prosecution to be invalid and malicious?

Fixed.

thirteen28 on June 15, 2007 at 8:12 PM

But the families of since-cleared players Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans watched with little emotion, and Evans’ attorney rejected Nifong’s attempt to take responsibility.

“It was an obvious cynical ploy to save his law license, and his apology to these people is far too little and comes far too late,” defense lawyer Joseph Cheshire said.

$$$ KA-CHING $$$

Jeffersonian on June 15, 2007 at 4:26 PM

If my memory serves, not only was that semen free of their DNA, but it contained the DNA of 3 other men. It’s amazing the miracles of science that being “super-wealthy” can buy. Or maybe she’s just a lying f—— whore.

ReubenJCogburn on June 15, 2007 at 9:10 PM

conservativecaveman on June 15, 2007 at 7:11 PM

Oh, yeah, he’s on the list. I was trying to remember his name earlier today. Glad you did.

RushBaby on June 16, 2007 at 12:29 AM

So how many other innocent men and women did this pig send to the big house?

You don’t really think was the 1st time, do you?

I expect that the inevitable review of his convictions will turn up many more bogus prosecutions.

Well, the people of R-D deserve what they get, because they reelected this a-hole.

georgej on June 16, 2007 at 1:15 AM

Now? Now?! NOW he resigns?!

Right at the end of his direct testimony. I think he thought the Bar would say, “oh, okay, well, you can go home now,” and forget about cross examination. But no such luck for the Fong. Closing arguments, deliberation and verdict today (Saturday)

Quisp on June 16, 2007 at 6:20 AM

I hope this despicable slug has just began to suffer. How about some federal civil rights charges and enough civil law suits to send him to the homeless shelter. This bum would have fit right in with the Gestapo.

rplat on June 16, 2007 at 10:01 AM

Nifong should be jailed for what he has done. I said that here 14 months ago and I still believe it.
On a much broader point, many other DA’s are so close-minded as to believe anyone and everyone in court is guilty.
All the DA’s who backed Nifong those long months should be heard from now. Every TV channel, including Fox, had a dozen or so ‘experts’ and past DA’s yakin’ it up daily with the majority of them arguing “we don’t know YET” and/or “a DA wouldn’t do that”…they believed and acted as tho DA’s are above the law. I’d really like to hear more from them now.

Paris went to jail not for her original traffic offense, but for her total contempt of court…twice breaking probation promises. The unfairness ( it was and is fair, in comparison to other probation breakers ) has everyone screaming from somewhere. Between the Paris Cirque Du So-lame and Nifong’s unique campaign strategy, this should be an opportunity to find out why we have a legal system, but no REAL justice system. But it won’t happen.
Justice is not equally served in all too many cases, but legally? each case was ‘resolved’. Voters happy, DA’s happy, cops happy..but it is not just.

TV tears flow when jail time actually looms…
