It was pre-taped for screening tonight at the National Right to Life conference, but David Brody of CBN had a copy handed to him by the “supporters of Fred Thompson.” Brody sounded worried this morning, you’ll recall, that Fred hadn’t been vocal enough in support of pro-life issues, his voting record notwithstanding. He sounds less worried now.

Go Fred!
So we have the two likely major candidates, with Romney pulling the dark horse.
Guilani/Thompson
Guilani/Romney
Thompson/Guliani
Thompson/Romney
Which looks the best?

Fred! and Romney..who is young enough to serve as Pres after Fred! serves! Remember: Fred! served a SELF-IMPOSED term limit
Enough said. FRED! and any of the above EXCEPT McCain!

I still am containing my enthusiasm until I see Fred behind a podium in a debate with the others. We’ll know pretty quick whether he’s for real or not.
Until then, with all due respect to CS and his reservations about ?FRED?……
Thompson/Steele!!
BacaDog on June 14, 2007 at 11:14 PM
I’ve been reserving judgment on Fred until we see him under fire, but it occurs to me that he doesn’t shrink from challenges, and answers them directly and effectively. (This is an example re: abortion, and MM video also). I’m really beginning to think he might be preparing to run the table, to borrow a term for cards because of the way he put his cancer out first and sloughing off his weak cards, so-to-speak.
If he can do this live, then I think he can take the WH in ‘08. Honestly. I know the Rep’s are under duress right now, but the overall atmosphere is irritation at both parties. I think that helps Fred/Mitt/Rudy more than it hurts b/c the predominate opponents are Hillary - running on experience and Obama, both inside the beltway currently. Anyway, if the Leno easy-going Fred is real, and this is scripted, he loses I think. But if the Leno easy-going Fred is a precursor to the direct-to-the-issue Fred post announcement, I think he’ll take the primary and probably the general.

BacaDog on June 14, 2007 at 11:14 PM
Oh he is for real, the only question is is he fast on his feet in a debate, which in my mind isn’t as important as how carefully he thinks out his positions.
doriangrey on June 14, 2007 at 11:17 PM
NOW and Jane, Rosie and CAIR, Harry and Dkos are all reaching for the air sickness bag after that video. He is staking out the right side of Right. Luvin it.

I’ll take a juicy, tender cut of Mrs. Fred! instead. (Will Smith voice) You know what I’m sayin… you know… youuuu know!? (/Will Smith voice)
Disclaimer: If you didn’t watch Fresh Prince back in the day, you may not get that Will Smith part.
RightWinged on June 14, 2007 at 11:29 PM
Needs a better videographer to deemphasize the wattles.
Style is part of the substance.
Talks directly and seriously, and, as BacaDog notes, he has to be seen in the mix and under fire before any judgment can be made.
High stakes politics is a crocodile wrestling match.
Energy and tenacity and wit and cunning and a profound historical sense are necessary because whoever gets in with be facing the most dangerous period on Earth since May of 1940, when the Phony War ended and the real battle for the survival of Western Civilization began in earnest.
We won that round, but the new fascism is far more devious.
This time dressed in ‘religious’ garb instead of Black and Brown Shirts.
Does Fred have the stamina? The spine. The killer instinct?
Let him come out swinging and show his hand.
profitsbeard on June 14, 2007 at 11:30 PM
I hope you’re both right. I just have a queasy feeling he’ll speak in parables rather than forcefully state his positions. Hope I’m wrong.
Nervously awaiting the first debate he participates in.
BacaDog on June 14, 2007 at 11:32 PM
Thompson/Romney
or
Thompson/Steele
I don’t think Guliani or Thompson will be anyone’s Veep.
I don’t know who Guliani or Romney would tap as Veep if they’re nominated, but it certainly won’t be each other–they’ve got to go beyond the Northeast.
INC on June 14, 2007 at 11:32 PM
Now that, profitsbeard, would make a damn nice tee-shirt.
Right on regarding the “come out swinging” advice for Fred.
BacaDog on June 14, 2007 at 11:34 PM
even though it sounds good to us, does it matter who VP is? Did Cheney help Bush? Did Edwards help Kerry any?
what worries me about Rudy is there are alot of pro-life repub voters, who are not political and vote on that issue alone. They could easily stay home or vote 3rd party with Rudy as nominee…..will be interesting.
jp on June 14, 2007 at 11:38 PM
Lots of wildcards out there…….Israel & Syria, Pak and India, and biggest of all our beloved GWB. George could t-off the country so badly by November we could run Abe Lincoln and lose.
Limerick on June 14, 2007 at 11:40 PM
He says all the right words. He truly “talks the talk” of the conservative line. Much more so than many RINO’s currently running for POTUS. Think about it…with the amnesty bill up for votes again (thanks to the current lineup of RINO’s in office - and, of course, Ted Kennedy) wouldn’t someone like this be far more appealing in office that what we have today? Unfortunately, the “office” has a way of making many Presidents (left and right) run to the center and abandon the core that elected them. They’re so appealing at this stage. What will we find to dislike about Fred! if he wins?
thedecider on June 14, 2007 at 11:52 PM
That’s why whomever the nominee is, he has to run as a Conservative, not a continue-the-status-quo Bush successor.

I was once all enthusiastic for Fred Thompson, but I don’t know if I’ll ever vote for a Republican again. I think I might just sit out for a long, long time, or maybe start writing in candidates for president like “Batman.”
The Republicans have pissed me off so much that I’m basically at the point where I’m thinking: the worse, the better.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:10 AM
Jeeze! Could that clown be any more transparently phoney?
“Oh, hey everybody, here’s my kid. She has to go to a birthday party.” “I have been with you since 1994 *pro-choice* but don’t pay attention to anything I said. All my friends want me to be president, and so, here I am. I don’t really want to work a lot of hours, and I gots a cupple tings I’s wants ta dood.”
Heh, freddie boy, how about you try being a candidate first?

csdeven, I figured it out - you’re simply jealous of this dude. Admit it :)
Entelechy on June 15, 2007 at 12:17 AM
Sure, but you must use the words “vacuous” and “fakery”.
Entelechy on June 15, 2007 at 12:19 AM
For one, I won’t feel like the Republican’s bitch when I go to vote. Don’t bother trying to say that I’m “forced” to vote for them because no one else is better. That argument has long passed its sell date. The Republicans take pro-lifers for granted, and they’re taking the national security voters for granted also. The Republicans care about one thing only: big business. That’s why they’re fighting tooth and nail for the illegal immigrants, because big business is afraid of local governments passing laws restricting them when it comes to illegals. They want the Feds to come in and bless their illegal hiring of those people.
I’m through with the Republicans. Seriously. They can choke on it. I’ll never vote for those bastards again.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:20 AM
You hoping to hit the reset button, so to speak? I don’t want to see that happen. What you’re thinking might sound romantic, but its a horrid path to go.
I’ll vote for people who won’t sell me out, but that’s it, no more voting for RINOs that’ll screw us anyway.

You’re joking right? You can’t see the absolute phoniness of that video? That looks like freddie boy traded in his red pickup for a wife and kids and is expecting the groupies to lap it up.
csdeven on June 15, 2007 at 12:23 AM
And where have I heard this all before? Oh yeah…Dkos.
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 12:23 AM
I won’t have to hit it. The way things are going, it will be hit within probably 10 or so years (if the terrorists don’t nuke us first, in which case it happens immediately after that).
I wouldn’t be so apathetic if I were convinced it wasn’t too late. But it is. This country is completely screwed.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:24 AM
Cool, I’ll throw in vacuous and fakery next time.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 12:24 AM

Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:25 AM
Fred is looking better and better.
Although I’d like for him to go a little further out on the border-enforcement limb, I can’t help but like what I’ve seen so far.
Which is more pathetic, the poster who insults the entire room, just to get some attention, or the poster aping his style?

doriangrey on June 15, 2007 at 12:31 AM
Dearest Sydney Carton, I’ll let you in on not-such-a-secret. I’m a registered independent because when I became a citizen (having had to wait years legally to do so), and both parties asked me right then and there to join them, I said to myself “you’re all political whores and I don’t ever want to be a complete one”. Realistically a 3rd party doesn’t have a chance here, though it’s sooooo needed.
Therefore, all I have to do is give Reid/Pelosi one glance. Voila, that’s my reality check. Truthfully, all need to be thrown out, left and right. Realistically it ain’t going to happen. Therefore we must fight in the primaries and think clearly when voting or staying home in the general.
In the end, fortunately we live in a country where we can do whatever we want, or not do anything at all. Still, times are too critically serious to do nothing.
Entelechy on June 15, 2007 at 12:31 AM
What civil war? The party hasn’t delivered on ANYTHING. Abortion is legal, gay marriage is spreading (see Massachusetts as of today), terrorism is still a widespread problem, the DHS is a joke, illegal immigration is coming in a deluge, spending is out of control, regulation is up, tax cuts are set to expire, iran is getting a nuclear bomb soon, and the republicans can’t even prosecute sandy burger but send scooter libby to jail.
Why anyone with a brain would support the Republicans after all of that is beyond me.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:33 AM
Enjoy your third party.

thebriand on June 15, 2007 at 12:36 AM
It’s better than telling myself that voting for the R’s will actually make a difference. I’m just not that stupid.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:36 AM
So please enlighten this stupid R…..who is an acceptable candidate and what is his/her platform?
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 12:38 AM
A party that supports Arlen Spector over Pat Toomey, a party that is willing to support big business over its core base on the issue of illegal immigration, a party that makes deals with Senator Kennedy, does nothing about spending, won’t confront iran, and lets the department of homeland security turn into another big government union, is a party I can’t support.
The worse, the better. It doesn’t matter anymore.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:40 AM
And the candidate Sydney?
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 12:40 AM
In 1992, the conservative base was furious at GHW Bush for reneging on his “Read my lips, No new taxes!” pledge. Many people stayed home or voted for Perot.
Now, considering that sentiment got us 8 years of Clinton and that allowed Bin Laden to eventually attack us on 9/11, are you glad that the conservatives taught the republican party a lesson?
csdeven on June 15, 2007 at 12:41 AM
Limerick,
It’s not a candidate per se, it’s the entire party. Absent a few small gems, they’re wholly corrupt. Even if Fred was the nominee and I agreed with him on everything, he’d STILL have to do business with people like Trent Lott, Arlen Spector, Lincoln Chaffee, John McCain, Olympia Snowe, and a bunch of others who I would never want to even talk to. They’re all playing us for fools. They will never end abortion, never get serious about terrorism, ilegal immigration, protecting marriage, iran, or spending.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:43 AM
Didn’t think you could answer that one Sydney….
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 12:44 AM
BWAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!! My impression must have been at least OK, given that I got you even with a snark indicating slashie. I was a little concerned I didn’t quite nail it, but now I’m not so worried. Sorry if it sounds like I’m picking on ya, I’m not, I’m just happy that my impersonation was that good.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 12:45 AM
So you’re blaming 9/11 on the conservatives that didn’t vote for Bush 41?
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:45 AM
csdeven, that was the most intelligent point I’ve seen you make here. I disagree, but that is a fair point.
I think there HAS to be a line. Maybe they’ve crossed it; you decide for yourself. A line must exist.
thebriand on June 15, 2007 at 12:46 AM
That’s because it’s a STUPID QUESTION. It doesn’t matter who the candidate is. The party is bigger than one person. There are hundreds of other senators and congressmen to be dealt with, and they’re all in the same boat.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 12:46 AM

csdeven on June 15, 2007 at 12:48 AM

Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 12:49 AM
I like to joke - on Fred, however, I’m not joking. I have followed this guy via many sources politically over the years. I also met him by my life’s many interesting chances. He’s not my only choice and I’ll definitely not vote for Clinton/Obama/Edwards/Gore. You are very wrong on him and I tolerate you benevolently because we made a deal, which I expect you to respect. Also, you are otherwise a real good guy, from all indications.
I don’t care about this video, his wife, kids, or his pickup truck, or where he was on McCain/Feingold, or other bla, blas.
I care about the WoT, the security of this country, including stopping this invasion. This is not ‘illegal immigration’, just like the WoT is not a WoT. It’s an invasion and we ought to call it that, as MM titled the book. Immigration can only be the legal kind.
And, I care a lot about this
This country is not “completely screwed” yet. However, with a Clinton/Obama/Edwards next it will be.
This, my e-friends, joyous and disheartened, you should all take strongly to heart. It.Is.Very.Serious.
This man has it right - freedom, not climate is at risk!

Even if they did, you’d still be wrong. I’m guessing you support Rudy? I do not, but I will if it’s Rudy v. Hillary in 2008. Because I know that, I will not go around insulting Rudy today. This helps me, and it helps my party. Show some of that party loyalty you are preaching to Sydney. LAY OFF FRED.

csdeven has crossed that line from obnoxious tool to parody of himself. Heh.
Bad Candy on June 15, 2007 at 12:57 AM
Ya know cs, I have to admire your spirit, but seriously question your methods. Ms Enetelchy, I think, hit it on the head….there is something personal about Fred! with you. At first I wanted to say it was fear that your ‘man’ would be overshadowed, but you get down right personal with him.
Then you confuse the hell outta me by saying if he gets the nod you would vote for him. It has me totally confused.
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 12:57 AM
Obviously he hasn’t been challenged on these issues. He keeps putting out scripted videos or speeches and they look and sound ok for basically being talking points with very little real depth. Every time I see him in an interview that expects him to go in depth, he looks just awful. Leno and Hoover compared to his scripted speeches? Like every other candidate, I’ll judge him by the interviews, not the rhetoric.
I hope you fredheads can see beyond his facade, because from what we’ve seen, his fall will be mighty.
csdeven on June 15, 2007 at 12:57 AM
Why?
And I don’t have a candidate yet, and I am surely not going to give a fake like fred? any respect until he actually becomes a candidate.
csdeven on June 15, 2007 at 1:03 AM
Maybe not yet, but it’s it will be, and very soon. I’m just not going to kid myself that voting for the R’s makes a difference any more. And as much as I liked Guliani as mayor, and voted for him as mayor, I will not vote for him as President. I will never, ever vote for a pro-choicer, period.
Sydney Carton on June 15, 2007 at 1:05 AM
I should clarify, that I voted for Guliani as mayor because abortion was completely outside of his power to control.

So Sydney……Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Gravel, Kucinich, Richardson, Giuliani, Thompson, McCain, Romney, Hunter, Tancredo, T.Thompson, Huckabee, Paul…….none are acceptable either from;
1. They are pro-choice
2. They are stupid ‘R’s.
Yes?
Limerick on June 15, 2007 at 1:12 AM
Actually SC, “the worse” part you refer to might not be a bad thing. I think right now we’re going through some very turbulent, and yet pre-storm, times, both in the world and here. Events, major ones, soon will change much in the Middle East. Here, it’s really not bad that the conservatives lost. If they haven’t learned their lesson in ‘06, they’ll learn it if they vote for the invasion. They think we’re all stupid sheep. While the electorate is pretty naive, it’s not stupid, and it’s not suicidal.
I agree with you that it can be depressing. For my part I’m almost enjoying the circus in the House/Senate, and the cloud over the conservatives’ tent. The big storm is about to hit and I think we’ll be better off. Many don’t see this yet but I’m convinced that the next president will be from the right. The House/Senate not so much.
Know that I don’t disagree with you on why you feel this way; just don’t let it depress you into apathy. Our times can least afford that. Regards,

Fred has clarity here which is something that the Rebublicans really need now. We don’t need Mitt’s waffling or Rudy’s pro-abortion stances. Bush promised a culture of life and now Thompson can deliver it with some more pro-life justices.
