Reid charms nutroots by dumping on Pace and Petraeus; Update: McCain rips Reid

Two things about our Harry that Dennis Miller didn’t get to in his rant the other day: he’s unusually solicitous of the nutroots, even by the standards of ass-kissing Democratic politicians, and he’s willing to personalize his contempt for the mission in Iraq by impugning the military commanders who manage it. The two go hand-in-hand, of course: for Reid, the war is about picking up Senate seats and he needs the nutroots for that.

Two months ago, he called Petraeus a liar by declaring that he’ll refuse to believe any September progress report that isn’t irretrievably dire. Now this:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, “incompetent” during an interview Tuesday with a group of liberal bloggers, a comment that was never reported.

Reid made similar disparaging remarks about Army Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said several sources familiar with the interview.

This is but the latest example of how Reid, under pressure from liberal activists to do more to stop the war, is going on the attack against President Bush and his military leaders in anticipation of a September showdown to end U.S. involvement in Iraq, according to Democratic senators and aides.

How … odd that this rather provocative comment from the Senate majority leader about the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the top military commander in Iraq went completely unreported until Politico got to it two days later. I wonder, did Reid ask the “citizen journalists” participating in the call not to report it? Or did they suppress it of their own accord, just to do him a solid?

Pace is on his way out so he’ll skate from now on but prepare to see Petraeus impugned ever more shrilly as we get closer to September, even though he’s been handed an impossible situation and even though had his counterinsurgency plans been followed from the beginning of the war, we might be looking at a different reality now. Rick Ellensburg, always ahead of the curve, has already started spitting venom at him. More will follow, especially if the September report sounds anything like this.

Update: McCain makes the layup.

Update: If Reid finds Petraeus so untrustworthy and incomptent, why on earth did he vote for him?
