Fox News: Reid will reintroduce amnesty bill next week; Update: Whose votes are likely to switch?

He’s got the votes for cloture, according to Republican sources.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will approve a new deal on immigration on Thursday and move to bring the once-dead legislation back to the Senate floor next week, Democratic sources told FOX News…

Based on the latest updates on the policy and amendments, Reid will approve the compromise and move late Thursday to put the bill back on the calendar for Senate consideration in the middle of next week…

The principal change to the bipartisan immigration compromise that Reid shelved last week is the addition of $4.4 billion in added border security spending. That money will be added to the base bill to return to the floor. Any other changes to the immigration bill will have to be made through the amendment process…

With the GOP votes in hand and a finite list of amendments to be offered by 11 Democratic and 11 Republican senators, Democratic sources said Reid is now determined to see whether the legislation can survive the amendment process intact. If it does, the Senate could vote on final passage of the bill by next Friday, Democratic sources said.

GOP sources tell FOX News that the new bill has enough support from Republicans for Reid to prevail on a procedural vote to get the bill to final passage.

So obnoxious is this bill that they’ve actually engineered two separate layers of excuses to get fence-sitters to vote for it. The first is the $4.4 billion band-aid, which Kaus accurately described the other day as “a transparent ploy to give these [fence-sitting] senators pro-enforcement cover so they can vote for the bill.” They won’t agree to results-based triggers because they already know the enforcement measures won’t get results; that’s how “pro-enforcement” they are. But they will happily agree to outlays so that next year, when the papers inevitably report that illegal immigration is down only negligibly, they can look surprised and act indignant. The second excuse is the procedural sleight of hand here, as John Hawkins explained this morning:

[T]he cloture vote to end debate will be the “real” vote on the bill because if debate is closed off, the bill is sure to pass. Then, what will happen is that the votes for the bill will be counted, and a few Senators who are afraid that their election prospects will be jeopardized by a “yes” vote, will be allowed to vote against the bill. This enables those Senators to tell their constituents that they voted against the bill, but it will still allow them to collect campaign contributions from lobbyists who have a better understanding of how things work, and know that the bill couldn’t have been passed without their support. Put another way, they get to reap the rewards of supporting amnesty while telling the voters in their home states that they opposed the bill.

You need 60 votes for cloture (i.e., to end debate) but a simple majority to pass it. So the fence-sitters will vote yes on the first and no on the second, knowing that even without them the amnesty wing will still have 51 votes to push it through. Egregiously, transparently shabby, and as insulting in its own way as Linda Chavez or Michael Chertoff impugning people’s motives. Like the boss said, they really do think we’re stupid.

Update: Noam Askew names the 10 senators most likely to switch their cloture votes from no to yes once the bill is reintroduced. That would make it 55-40. The amnesty wing would need five more besides.

Our Constitution was designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other

Kinda sums the whole thing up nicely, eh?

May God have mercy on this country.

This isn’t a Republican Party failure, folks. If every Republican voted for it, it still wouldn’t become law.

We’re mad at the Republican turncoats, but the DEMOCRATS are more guilty because this is Teddy Kennedy’s folly and they, as a party, fully support the invasion of illegal aliens.

But from what I have read, 3/4 of ALL Americans oppose amnesty. That means that any Senator (or Rep) who votes for it is likely to face the wrath of the voters REGARDLESS OF WHICH PARTY he or she is in.

Don’t you folks get it?

EVERY pol who votes for it is *vulnerable* because the opposition to amnesty cuts across party lines.

Obama, one of my Senators and presidential candidate, will vote for it. Whomever the Republican nominee is, he has a ready-made “killer” issue to beat Obama over the head with, one that will resonate with the voters.

Durbin (my other Senator) is up for election in 08. In addition to calling marines and soldiers Nazi death camp guards, Gulag keepers, and killers like Pol Pot, his Republican opposition has a ready made campaign issue, assuming “Turban Durbin” isn’t knocked out in the primary.

That is assuming that the morons running the Republican party in Illinois can pull their heads out of their a$$es.

Ladies and gentlement, the Dems think they are innoculated against the backlash. But the ILLEGAL ALIENS STILL WON’T BE ALLOWED TO VOTE in 08! The Repubs think that campaign contributions from the people who hire the illegal aliens will carry them in 08, but forget that CORPORATIONS don’t vote — angry CITIZENS do.

We will get our revenge in November, 2008, if these retards approve amnesty. And I Predict that it will cut across party lines and might result in the defeat of every one who voted for it who is up for election.

Buck up, folks. We have nowhere to go but UP.

In another thread, the stay-at-home conundrum came up again.

Many are threatening non-voting or voting for a third party in the next presidential election. Then, there are those who say that will hand the Presidency and Congress over to the Dems.

I don’t want that either, and up until now it HAS been an conundrum.

I don’t think it is any longer. If amnesty passes, there will be enough former illegals voting for Dems that even the most solid Republican voting block won’t come near to be enough to make any sort of a difference. So, non-voting or voting for a third party won’t deliver our government to them.

This cloture vote will. It’s all or nothing here. If we can’t stop it, then the Dems will enjoy an executive and legislative majority for decades. It’s that simple.

As Picard said, the line must be drawn here!

Since both my Senators, Coburn & Inhofe, are opposed to the bill and have several times responded to my letters stating so, my question is :

What more can I do? If I send emails to other out-of-state Senators I would assume that they will be ignored.

I will continue to send letters and emails to my Senators,2-3 a week and have encouraged my like-minded friends to do the same.

If this bill is passed, then the only thing I can think to do is buy more ammo. It can be more valuable than gold when the SHTF!

bubbadog89 on June 15, 2007 at 8:16 AM

Also, what are the chances of the bill passing in the House?

bubbadog89 on June 15, 2007 at 8:17 AM

bubbadog89,

I would suggest contacting Presidential candidates that are also still part of the legislative branch (most notably, McCain). He’s looking for national votes.

Then, there are the state and national Republican parties. Make sure they know you’re going to hit them where it hurts, in the fundage department.

Darksean on June 15, 2007 at 8:18 AM

The Republicans who vote for this amnesty bill will be fired! Not a threat…just a promise.

Thanks for the tip. I think I will send all of the frontrunners in the POTUS race an email detailing my opposition to this bill. I will also remind them that it is their job to represent the will of the people not their own personal beliefs.

bubbadog89 on June 15, 2007 at 8:40 AM

But the ILLEGAL ALIENS STILL WON’T BE ALLOWED TO VOTE in 08!

georgej

Illegals do vote, not unless they ask for a picture ID where you vote. My county does that, but it’s not widespread in my state (GA). A reporter in Texas found out that illegals do indeed vote. He found out by way of jury duty. A lot of people had to excuse themselves from jury duty because they were here illegally. You’re only called to jury duty if you have voted.

Thanks for the link! We need to flood them! Do not roll over! Send the above link to all of your friends & family! Take charge! If you do nothing, you get NOTHING!

Here is the PS I put on my fax to McLettuce/McStain.

P.S. You will NOT receive my vote for President! Please don’t use the “well a democrap win then” line because you are acting like a Democrap.

By the way, when do I get to cheat on my taxes and break other assorted laws so I can receive AMNESTY!

Don’t spin words because a lousy senator is still a lousy senator!

VikingGoneWild on June 15, 2007 at 11:24 AM

Here’s what I sent to Kyl. What are you doing? Hint: Set up a reoccuring hourly appointment in your online calander & continue to send a faxes!

\Do NOT change your vote! VOTE NO! Be the leader I thought you were when I voted for you!

A VOTE FOR CLOTURE IS A VOTE FOR AMNESTY!!
A VOTE FOR CLOTURE IS A VOTE FOR AMNESTY!!

Do not think by voting Yes for cloture but no for the bill will satisfy us here in Arizona.

A bad bill is a bad bill! Why limit debate?

I voted for you. Please do not betray my faith and belief in you.

VikingGoneWild on June 15, 2007 at 11:35 AM

I’ll add that if your Senators don’t support this bill you need to thank them and ask them what help they need to keep this bill from passing. They need your support in the uphill battle they are waging against tremendous pressure from the President on down.

Buzzy on June 15, 2007 at 11:43 AM

I’m doomed here in PA. I miss Rick Santorum. He always voted ‘my way’. I’ve contacted both Spector and Casey many times but I know they’ll turn a deaf ear to me. I’ll keep tryin’!!

dbdiva on June 15, 2007 at 1:49 PM

I wrote both, Hutchison and Cornyn, telling them that we are all aware which one is the important vote here, and that the people will not hesitate in voting Cornyn out if Hutchison plays the cloture-yes, amnesty-no trick. If Republicans do now show unity they will pay in the polls.

I URGE ALL TEXANS TO DO THE SAME!
