They think there’s still time to stop it; Laura’s got the list of waffling senators up on her site right now with contact numbers to that end.
I am, as usual, pessimistic.
Update: I meant to link John Hawkins’s piece earlier but forgot. I assume everyone’s already seen it at MM.com, but if not, the last stop for this railroad job is apparently going to be the conference committee after the bill passes, where our enlightened elders will strip away all the ugly compromises they had to which they had to agree to get the bill passed.
[I]f the bill gets through the Senate and the House, the Democrats and the open borders Republicans will work together when the bills have to be reconciled in committee to strip out any amendments that the “grand bargainers” don’t like. Therefore, at this point, it doesn’t matter what amendments pass, because any tough enforcement provisions that slip through will be rendered toothless when the bills are reconciled…
My source also let me know that the White House and the Senate leadership, and Trent Lott in particular, are pushing very hard for this bill.
I asked my source to speculate on why Lott was pushing so hard, and he said that Lott may be naive enough to think that this bill might help John McCain’s presidential campaign. He told me that despite McCain’s dip in the polls since the bill hit the news, it was hard to miss the fact that the biggest supporters of this bill in the Senate, Jon Kyl, Trent Lott, and Lindsey Graham, are all solidly behind McCain in ‘08.

Fortunately we have two intelligent, witty, and beautiful women to stand up for our beliefs and rights.
The Republicans in congress supporting this bill understand it for exatly what it is: this bill is corporate servitude. It rivals the Mexican government in it’s corruption, and is radically destructive on the American work force. Does anyone believe corporates can be compelled to pay skilled workers a legitimate wage when there are illegal immigrants who will work for far less?

Comprehensive is the scam people. We cannot allow anything with the word comprehensive to get through. Border enforcement and Amnesty do not have to be tied together unless you are open borders Bush, McCain, Graham, Lott, etc. They don’t have to be tied together unless you don’t really want to enforce the laws or the borders. 2 seperate bills is the only solution to this. The first for border enforcement/law enforcement and later Amnesty. Unless we get two seperate bills the borders will never ever be enforced.

Michael Steele has an editorial about illegal immigration on Townhall today.

The American people are fed up and won’t be misled again. This Congress will be judged on their actions, not their words.
Congress must stop the flow of illegal immigrants across our border. Once we know who is in our country then we can take the next step in immigration reform.
TheBigOldDog on June 14, 2007 at 2:52 PM
Is Steele on anyone’s VP short list or do you think he will be marginalized as OBAMA light? A sad attempt by the GOP to compete. I hope he runs because in the theater of Ideas he is strong.
tomas on June 14, 2007 at 2:54 PM
The federal government is usurping the State’s rights to defend themselves against the illegal swarm that is invading.
We need a whole new government, but these clowns are trying to ram this down our throats before we can boot them out of office.
Recall petitions should be started on every one who is behind this naked grab for power against the people’s will.
bbz123 on June 14, 2007 at 2:55 PM
If conservatives are willing to break with the Republican Party over this issue they will only hurt their own country. Think about it before behaving in an immature way.
Baphomet on June 14, 2007 at 3:00 PM
It’s probably way to early for anyone to have a short list of potential VP candidates. Just my two cents worth, but as much as I like Steele, he’s really an unknown and probably wouldn’t add much vote getting power to a ticket. But, I could be wrong. He could pound the dem VP nominee in a debate and become a powerful draw.
I like him, and hope the eventual nominee does pick him as the #2. Pretty unlikely though.
BacaDog on June 14, 2007 at 3:00 PM
First of all I won’t abandon the party, but I’ll darn sure adandon a candidate or incumbent. Sick and tired of the muck pile up on the Hill.
Steele…..he would smash any dem VP candidate in a debate.
We shouldn’t be afraid of the ‘Obama’ factor…..nominate the best man and let the folks decide.

I sent my emails out yesterday. I received a co-signed email back from Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. They’ve sent a joint letter to Bush about all the disappointed people in Georgia and are now enforcing the “comprehensive” plan for setting aside money for the fence.
The border could be closed in a few days. I won’t believe a word out of Washington until I see “boots on the ground” and construction workers actually building a wall/fence.
moonsbreath on June 14, 2007 at 3:23 PM
At what point do you leave the Republican party? They have diverted from their base on spending, signing into law McCain/Feingold, affirmative action/racial preferences, illegal immigration, general law enforcement and more. If you are going to support the Republican party do you not have to ask the question what is the modern day Republican party? To tell you the truth, the Republican party has changed. It is no longer what it once was. For me, support for a party is a direct result of them agreeing with me on the major issues of our time. Support for this Amnesty bill was the last draw.

Would that be MEXICO?
Gregor on June 14, 2007 at 3:24 PM
I won’t believe a word out of Washington until boots have been on the ground for years, the entire fence is built and fines and jail time prove to me that it is not a profitable practice for employers to hire illegals. Its going to take Washington years of obvious, distinctive action to prove to me that I can trust them to solve this problem.

Thanks Jade for the link. I missed it during my brief visit there this morning. I can tell you though it leaves me with a very bad feeling that he is not in the Senate now, as he should be. Instead, we got us another career politician to take Sarbanes’ place. As good as that article is, it only shows how much he would have made a difference in this debate. I hope he gets back into it next cycle when Mikulski is up. Run Mike run!!!
However, I am getting very disillusioned about the Republican Party. Why must they (the so-called leaders) leave me high and dry? That’s one reason why I am recovering democrat for crying out loud!!!

The right of revolution is an inherent one. When people are oppressed by their government, it is a natural right they enjoy to relieve themselves of the oppression, if they are strong enough, whether by withdrawal from it, or by overthrowing it and substituting a government more acceptable.”

“I am a revolutionist by birth, reading, and principle. I am always on the side of the revolutionists because there never was a revolution unless there were some oppressive and intolerable conditions against which to revolt.”

The Instapunk site has an interesting take on this question, as well as Michelle’s approach to it.
Bottom line is, I guess it’s time to strike up the “Bizarre Republican Death Wish” watch again at places like InstaPundit. Or a betting pool: How many seats do we think they want to lose in the Senate in 2008? Four? Six? Eight? More?

I just call that POS Craig’s (Idaho R) office in Boise and he will not allow the bill to be filibustered and wont say how he will vote on it when it comes to a vote.
I emailed, and called both his offices and told them that me, my wife, and three of my kids will not vote for him in 08 if he votes for cloture.
Sorry guys, that’s all I can do.

I have already emailed my Senators, the RNC, Federal and State. Unfortunately I am in the state of Arizona so my esteemed Senators are the enemy on this issue. Sometime it sucks to be me.

usarmyretired,
I live in Florida so I can relate.
I have called Martinez’ office in Orlando and D.C. I know I’m wasting my breath.
I have also called Nelson, my Democrat Senator. I probably have a better change of convincing him from a wage and entry level job point than of making a dent in Martinez’ thought.
INC on June 14, 2007 at 6:06 PM
I knew my Senators wouldn’t be on that list (Inhoffe and Coburn). In fact I received an email from Inhoffe’s office just today warning of the upcoming reintroduction of this bill.

It’s time for a new “Gang of 14″ to unite in stopping this. Who among the Senate whimps has the courage to do what is right for America? To paraphrase George Jetson: “Somebody, stop this crazy thing!”

Wake up America.
The Republican party no longer stands for anything (neither do the Democrats for that matter). The wild spending, McCain/Fiengold, … and most recently this “comprehensive” immigration bill. The Republicans (as well as the Democrats) will sell you out in a nanosecond. They are an aristocracy, we are acceptable losses.
Call me a whack job or whatever you want. After they shove this POS bill down our throats, ever wonder what might be next? Get ready.
I am still fax’ing, emailing, calling …, but I am far more inline with these:

roydee43 on June 15, 2007 at 9:04 AM
Washington just doesn’t get it (or simply does not care). A large majority of the American people want border security and deportation of criminals decoupled from any bill dealing with the current illegal population.
They also want to see border security and enforcement in place and working before anything else is considered. If this doesn’t happen no one is going to believe it is ever going to happen.
duff65 on June 15, 2007 at 3:45 PM
My local congresscritter just happens to be one that is trustworthy on this issue, a guy named Duncan Hunter. No need to write him, he’s already on the front line for the Constitution.
Sadly, that makes my senators Babs and Di-Fi. Not much use in writing them, but I have anyway.
I pray those of you in less concretely decided locations have a more hopeful situation, I’m along for the ride.
On the presidential front, I would like to see Hunter, Tancredo, Brownback and Huckabee get together and form a pact. Decide which of them has the most public appeal, and the other three drop in behind the one, begging all of their supporters to follow suit. I believe Brownback is the weakest of the four in national recognition, any of the other three have shown themselves well in the debates, and with a coalescence of the mutual support, could make a difference in the primaries.
