Who CAIRs? Update: CAIR responds

Not as many as once did, it seems.

Membership in the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has declined more than 90 percent since the 2001 terrorist attacks, according to tax documents obtained by The Washington Times.

The number of reported members spiraled down from more than 29,000 in 2000 to fewer than 1,700 in 2006. As a result, the Muslim rights group’s annual income from dues dropped from $732,765 in 2000, when yearly dues cost $25, to $58,750 last year, when the group charged $35.

The organization instead is relying on about two dozen donors a year to contribute the majority of the money for CAIR’s budget, which reached nearly $3 million last year.

58k in membership dues? They need to ad AdSense to the official CAIR website or something, get those numbers up.

It would be nice to know who CAIRs fat cat donors are. They’re the only ones keeping CAIR alive.

In 2001, 26 contributors gave more than $1.6 million; in 2002, 26 gave more than $2.6 million; in 2003, 24 gave more than $2 million; in 2004, 20 gave more than $1.4 million; in 2005, 19 contributed $1.3 million.

Without the fat cats, Ibrahim Hooper might have to get a real job, and CAIR would be just another unindicted co-conspirator accused of helping Hamas.

Federal prosecutors have named three prominent Islamic organizations in America as participants in an alleged criminal conspiracy to support a Palestinian Arab terrorist group, Hamas.

Prosecutors applied the label of “unindicted co-conspirator” to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America, and the North American Islamic Trust in connection with a trial planned in Texas next month for five officials of a defunct charity, the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development.

Related to all this, Jonah Goldberg has the takeaway idea:

I hope the guys at MRC keep track of whether these reports have any effect on CAIR’s media appearances, not just in terms of booking frequency but how they’re introduced.

1700 members does not a spokesman make. Through Hot Air we have more than 1700 members in our conservative video club on YouTube. Maybe we should put “spokesmen for the entire conservative movement” based on that on our business cards and see if the news channels come running.

As for CAIR, ordinarily, when an organization loses 90% of its membership and said organization ends up getting bad press about being an unindicted co-conspirator to crime, the head of the organization either commits a little professional seppuku or gets sent packing. But CAIR honcho Ibrahim Hooper still has his job. And he still has his two dozen or so fat cat donors to keep him and CAIR rich enough to make a lot of noise and help out the flying imams. Eenteresting.

Update (AP): There are two possibilities here, it seems to me. Either CAIR’s losing members because they’ve alienated American Muslims by flirting with radicalism, in which case we should expect to find a modest corresponding surge in the membership rolls of more moderate Muslim groups as they pick up some of CAIR’s disaffected patrons, or CAIR’s losing members because Muslims are wary of being caught up in government scrutiny of Islamic organizations and their fundraising practices after 9/11, in which case we should expect to see declining membership rolls across the board (although perhaps more pronounced at CAIR given its track record). Which is it?

Either way, it’s amazing that an organization devoted to fashioning an American-Islamic grievance consciousness would be losing devotees when there’s so much DHS and foreign policy material for them to demagogue.

Update (bp): And then there’s this:

The Pew Research Center just concluded an exhaustive scientific study of the size of the U.S. Muslim population. It was able to identify only 2.35 million Muslims — less than half the figure commonly cited by Muslim activists…

Foremost among such groups is the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which claims to represent Muslims in Washington. CAIR commissioned its own survey in 2001 and came up with 6 million to 7 million, an estimate it always touts in its press releases and on its Web site.

As a result, most media outlets — as well as Congress, the White House and the State Department — have parroted the figure to describe the size of the nation’s Muslim population.

So CAIR has been taqiyya-ing the number of Muslims in the US, to inflate that number and therefore CAIR’s own importance? Say it ain’t so.

Update (AP): The WashTimes was working off of their own tax forms so I don’t know what CAIR’s got to complain about here.

Comparing CAIR’s 2000 dues figure to that of 2006 is a misleading and mischievous ‘apples and oranges’ exercise because those figures were calculated based on different criteria. They do not include the thousands of people of all faiths who became CAIR members through several free or low-cost membership drives. For example, between 2002 and 2006, more than 25,000 people became active members for $10 or less during those drives.

“Our membership is increasing steadily, as is our donor base, annual budget, and attendance at CAIR events around the country promoting interfaith understanding and respect for civil liberties.

Looks like Soros and the DNC will have to start pumping money into CAIR now.

roninacreage on June 12, 2007 at 10:07 AM

Soros is already in for $1 mil a year.

The other guys donating consist of a guy from Dearborn who runs a couple of Tim Hortons doughnut joints, a guy from Bridgview who runs an Islam used auto and repair joint, and a one-eyed Imam from Walnut Creek.

Jaibones on June 12, 2007 at 10:13 AM

That’s ok, Bryan. It’s not like I mentioned this in your comment section — yesterday. JK.

amerpundit on June 12, 2007 at 10:20 AM

It’s still disgusting, I can’t believe this organization is still allowed to exist.

4shoes on June 12, 2007 at 10:22 AM

Time for another name change ….

CAIR-LESS.

Heh. But it’s not official until one of us official spokesmen for all conservatives say it is!

Bryan on June 12, 2007 at 10:24 AM

We need to find out who the mystery donors are and why the IRS is redacting names.

JammieWearingFool on June 12, 2007 at 10:26 AM

…the head of the organization either commits a little professional seppuku or gets sent packing.

Wouldn’t it be more like professional martyrdom? I, for one, would like to see Mr. Hooper meet his 72 job-placement clerks.

LOL. Well, excuuuuuuuuuse me.

amerpundit on June 12, 2007 at 10:30 AM

Allah, You’re missing the 3rd possibility and a very real one. How many of those names that are ‘no longer members’ are on a watch list? And as for the dues, I would be looking for alternate accounts since the NYT has let them know that finances are being watched.

OK, so an auto mechanic, a doughnut shop owner, and a one-eyed Imam walk into a mosque…

DOAH! No, no you didn’t miss it. In other words I agree with your sencond assessment.

I wonder what the answer is, of people are just nervous about getting tied to an organization like CAIR or if they don’t like it.

But it’s not official until one of us official spokesmen for all conservatives say it is!

Bryan on June 12, 2007 at 10:24 AM

All well and good, but you forgot the most important part of being a truly masterful grievancemonger, the shakedown!

Bad Candy on June 12, 2007 at 10:34 AM

You know how Rush creates phrases or nicknames for people that he uses repeatedly to imprint the idea in people’s minds? Like “William Jefferson Democrat Lousiana”–he always refers to him by that full moniker. So we should all call CAIR, “CAIR of the 1,700 members,” or similar. This really cinches it: they are not an advocacy organization at all, because you have to have someone to advocate for to be an advocacy organization; they are basically a 5th column for radical Islam.

Can you say Saudi Wahabbis?

Just a guess, but I bet I’m right.

Of course the real irony is that the real supporters of CAIR is everyone that drives a car.

CAIR are a bunch of terrorist and terrorist supporters…

doriangrey on June 12, 2007 at 11:28 AM

CAIR’s losing members because Muslims are wary of being caught up in government scrutiny of Islamic organizations…

That’s certainly going to be CAIR’s spin on it. If this story makes it into the MSM, count on Hoop to make this very argument loud and long, followed by thousands of sympathy memberships from non-Muslim college and university students nationwide.

eeyore on June 12, 2007 at 11:31 AM

How many of those names that are ‘no longer members’ are on a watch list?

Those are EXACTLY the ones to find and keep an eye on…they went into the shadows. ( maybe we could find some illegals while there..hehe?)

NOW THIS IS A GOOD IDEA!! cant be AP, he wont stand in front of a camera, but Bryan…your hired!

CAIR is like the Arab wing of the KKK.

Whoa. Gitmo must be bigger than we thought…

see-dubya on June 12, 2007 at 1:01 PM

In any response to anything that CAIR puts out, PR, comment, or protest, the first response must begin with:

“CAIR, and unindicted co-conspirator of Hamas….”

and must include:

“CAIR is hardly representative of America’s 2.4 million Muslims, as they only have 1700 members. CAIR is, unfortunately, representative of those Muslims who associate with the Hamas terrorist front, and must be viewed in that light”

Maxx on June 12, 2007 at 12:22 PM

Ha ha ha, 60 minutes or any other liberal media outlet would never ever tell you the truth about CAIR….. :P

doriangrey on June 12, 2007 at 2:03 PM

CAIR is like the Arab wing of the KKK.

Mojave Mark on June 12, 2007 at 12:40 PM

As bad as the KKK is/was, I don’t think they ever endorsed strapping explosives to children.

Maxx on June 12, 2007 at 2:22 PM

Absolutely no surprise here – part of their culture. Where was/is our media to check on the numbers? Ahhh, see what Tony Blair just said about today’s media mob.

Entelechy on June 12, 2007 at 2:43 PM

Yes… poor CAIR, they are so far down the tube maybe someone should send them a CAIR-Bear. Of course a properly accessorized CAIR-Bear would come with it’s own little make-believe plastic explosives belt and maybe a Hamas headscarf.

Maxx on June 12, 2007 at 2:46 PM

Our membership is increasing steadily, as is our donor base, annual budget, and attendance at CAIR events around the country promoting interfaith understanding and respect for civil liberties……..

More than one [government official] described the standards used by critics to link CAIR to terrorism as akin to McCarthyism, essentially guilt by association.

CAIR Director Ibrahim Hooper — from the article — CAIR Accuses Washington Times of ‘Agenda-Driven Reporting’

Membership is increasing? Gee Ibrahim, could we have a look at some of those numbers ? And you know, history has shown that McCarthy wasn’t all that wrong. So where is Joe McCarthy when you need him ?

Maxx on June 12, 2007 at 7:59 PM

CAIR on Capitol Hill.
