[...] St. John is muzzled because of the campaign, relegated to looking nervous and nodding condescendingly when voters complain to him about the craptacular congressional immigration efforts for which he’s materially responsible. So it falls to tools like this and Lindsey Graham to lob grenades at the base and offer sub-moronic procedural justifications for why the bill should be passed. It’s no different than if we said, “Why don’t we hook up with the nutroots and get Lott and Graham impeached, just to see if we have the balls to do it? Just to prove that our democracy still works? After all, are we men or mice?” [...]

[...] You know what would have been a real “confidence builder”? If the ‘86 amnesty had accomplished even a shred of what it was supposed to. As it is, they’re going to end up doing here what they always do when it comes to border enforcement: make promises, appropriate money, and follow through on a tiny fraction of it, thereby giving St. John another plum opportunity to nod grimly in faux solidarity with voters wanting to know why exactly two miles of fence thus far has been built. Kaus: As Kate O’Beirne points out, the proposal seems much more like a transparent ploy to give these senators pro-enforcement cover so they can vote for the bill. I think veteran comprehensivist Sen. McCain even publicly suggested this maneuver. … Democracy works, but for Senators eager to please business lobbyists, pander to Latinos–and who have secret contempt for their constituents–it will be a last resort.
Enforce the GD laws that are already on the books. What's the point of writing new ones when the existing laws are openly ignored?

We need someone in the White House and in Congress with some Malkins to reverse this ridiculous trend.

Only interior enforcement of employers, denial of services will end illegal immigration but the fence and serious border patrol will seriously limit border crossing for criminal and terrorist reasons. Illegal drugs, women held against their will for purposes of prostitution, terrorism is a very good reason to build the fence and ramp up border security but the Senate decided not to fund such measures. I have serious doubts about both the Democrats and the Bush administrations agenda in not securing our border and enforcing our existing laws so as much as I can influence it, there will not be any immigration reform until I'm satisfied those things are being done. I actually can see where there may be a need for a guest worker program but we'll talk about that after our government actually meets its prior promises and follows the law.

“By the way, I think the fence is least effective. But I’ll build the goddamned fence if they want it.”

This makes it sound as though King John could do as he goddamned well pleased.

In this video he very quickly moved to placate the gentleman who wouldn't be shut up and who stood up to point out broken promises and the lack of enforcement will as portrayed by many members of the Senate including John McCain.

After the unconscionable anti American comments and actions by the Senator from Arizona this was as delightful to see as Paris going to jail.

Arrogance meets justice...has a nice ring to it.

Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.

President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents - less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.

This is an interesting article about what Ike did that actually worked.

I don't think our leader shave the will to do this, though.

At this point I think we should use Johnny Mac as the first fence post. Mel Martinez, Ted Swimmer Kennedy, and Hissy Fit Graham will be the next three posts in the chain.

I've been reading the Secure Border Initiative newsletters to try to understand what's going on with the program. DHS hasn't talked to any of the landowners in Texas yet, and a lot of people are worried that they'll lose access to the water they need for their crops and livestock, or that they'll be walled off from huge chunks of their land.

Anyway, in their newsletter, CBP says it's committed to buliding 370 miles of primary fencing by Dec 2008. They also say that they've just finished testing the nine proposed models of fences and vehicle barriers, so maybe now they'll start moving faster on buliding. I think what will be more useful is the large detention centers they'll build so they won't have to release people. Also, the COP electronics and mobile sensor towers look promising to me.

It's going to get pretty messy when they start condemnation proceedings on all those properties along the border. Rumor has it that the pedestrian fences require a 150 ft wide strip with paved road.

St. John of Tiajuana should just shut down his presidential campaign right now, while he still has a chance of getting his deposit on the furnishings back. He's made himself quite clear on the issue of open borders and amnesty, and no amount of pandering is going to fool people at this point.

As for Martinez, I was wondering how different things would be right now if--instead of the shamnesty crowd calling the shots at the RNC--they'd picked Michael Steele to head up the party. (Or almost any capable person who represents American interests instead of Mexico's, for that matter.) Somehow I doubt that donations would be down 40% and they'd be laying people off, but maybe that's just me. That's some fine "leadership" there, Mel. Bravo.

“By the way, I think the fence is least effective. But I’ll build the goddamned fence if they want it.”

Thank you Senator McCain. You'd be doing the country a great service by resigning from the Senate and start digging trenches for the wall instead.

For objectivity - this country can't be encircled by a 20 feet wall - simply impossible. The number one item to address is the penalty on those who breach the law and hire the illegal laborers, be they educated or unskilled.

Secondly Homeland Security needs to get serious. The guy at the 'helm' needs to go. It's not the uninterrupted fence that's the issue, it's the policy of ignoring the borders.

Both parties' pockets are bulging with donations from those interested in not changing...nothing will happen until someone in leadership calls it what it is and asks the people to send them lesser donations, by the millions.

So far, this article (in my estimation) is the best on topic.

It is clear and gives credit to those who disabled the 'beast' for now, and faults the bill for having been concocted in the dark, by a few operatives. All politicians should read the article and get a grip. Note how Mr. Webb voted. Also note that all states are now border states. This is incredibly significant. The country is awakened. And the days' work has just begun.

Above all, it credits the blogs and radio, today's new media for organizing fast and effectively so many voices.

Mr. McCain risks going into history in infamy, if he doesn't stop while he can. That w/b a shame.

Señor Martinez already dwells in infamy and can only stop the bleeding. The only reason he was appointed to lead the party machine was to push this bill through. Now he has to own it and it hurts. He should have remained a senator only and would have been fine. Power...you know how it goes.

St. John was hit by reality.

No, St. John was full of Sh!t, just like every other politician.

I agree, sort of. A “fence” is not as effective as a very high, wide, unscalable WALL!

Watching McCain like this is like watching a fish flop on the sand…gasping for air. Fun stuff!

Needs more wall with lots of tank traps and barb-wire. Put the sensors around the thing so we know where they are going to try to scale it.

“In the long term, if you alienate the Hispanics, you’ll pay a heavy price.”

What the hell are they going to do - drop an H-bomb on us? The truth is if we don't stop the invasion by the mexicans we will 'pay a heavy price'.

"But I’ll build the goddamned fence if they want it.”

We don't need a GD fence Mr. McCain - we need a GD wall. Oh, and by the way, we don't need you to build it, we just need you and your ilk in Congress to come up with the funds to build what you have already approved. A GD WALL!

Who asked for hundreds of pages of legal BS and sleight of hand written with the advice of La Raza and other open borders advocates? Who asked for amnesty for law breakers?

Jeff on June 10, 2007 at 12:50 PM

George Bush and Teddy Kennedy and John McCain and the girly boy from South Carolina and the rest of the GD amnesty bunch.

One thing can be proven tho' - blogs like this with their open forums can get the attention of those bastards who try to ram things down our throats. Michelle and the guys who run this blog should get medals for their efforts in helping to stop the GD amnesty bill! Long live Hot Air and GD John McCain!

Never too early; get him fully emasculated before the 2008 election. Then, he can focus his attention on catapult technology.
