This is one of those precious few occasions where I wish I wasn’t blogging at HA so I could lay into him in a manner commensurate with his own viciousness. But he and the boss are colleagues so I’ll leave the invective (or lack thereof) to her. Suffice it to say, it’s even clearer now than it was this morning that Geraldo sees no dimension to this rather highly multidimensional issue except race. Nor does he seem to grasp any distinction between prejudice towards Jews for who they are and opposition to a small subset of Latinos, whites, blacks, Asians, etc. for a choice they’ve made. Combine the two and you’ve got the quintessence of a leftist argument: venomous demagoguery of his opponent’s motives coupled with absolute absolution for the malfeasance of the “victimized” group due to their perceived lack of personal autonomy. Disgraceful, and transparently racist in its own right. And as you’ll see, he takes it far enough that he’s willing to let aliens convicted of crimes stay here even if we have the means to deport them.
I’ll leave it there. FYI, the clip begins with Michelle’s “week in review” segment. Geraldo appears a little more than halfway through.
Update: And right on cue, here’s Exhibit B — tomorrow’s NYT editorial.

O’Reilly is just like those WSJ guys, living in their all-white bastions of privilege and wealth, sneering at the ordinary people whose communities are impacted by the illegal invasion.
Ali-Bubba on June 8, 2007 at 10:15 PM
Geraldo went way too far and was far too emotional in his comments. To my viewing, Geraldo seemed almost out of control and was not effective at all. This was in distinct contrast to Michelle’s cool and reasoned perfomance with Bill O’Reilly.
Phil Byler on June 8, 2007 at 10:17 PM
Michelle was her usual perfectly prepared self; energetic, feisty, moving forward on the issue. Geraldo was spinning his head off. The contrast was stark.
If you’re a conservative, there is no one better on cable than Michelle.
Zorro on June 8, 2007 at 10:17 PM
To me, the most sickening thing about Geraldo is that he has suddenly become Super-Hispanic. He makes me sick.
Glynn on June 8, 2007 at 10:19 PM
Gerardo is out of his mind. Michelle is talking about hardened criminals and he glibly throws out the example of John Lennon. You can’t have a debate with someone like that..
austinnelly on June 8, 2007 at 10:21 PM
Michelle was dead on target!
Geraldo Rivera, born Gerry Rivers; is an even bigger moronic idiot than when he raided Al Capone’s vault.
Jack.
Jack Deth on June 8, 2007 at 10:22 PM
Yeah, the John Lennon analogy was really helpful for Geraldo. What a putz!
commonsensehoosier on June 8, 2007 at 10:23 PM
Geraldo is a frickin moron! He bitches about people becoming “emotional” over the subject, while he gets all red in the face and practically spits while yelling. I’m tired of him. My husband is hispanic, and for Geraldo to sit there and say that I’m looking at every hispanic wondering if they are legal or not, and that I want families ripped apart pisses me off. My FIL came here illegally 40 plus years ago. My MIL was an American citizen when he and her married. My FIL worked his ass off learning English, and worked for years to become legal. Yea, that’s right, Geraldo, I hate illegals.
StephC on June 8, 2007 at 10:25 PM
…oh yeah, Geraldo was being an ignorant punk talking down to his opposite numbers, Michelle and Sen. Cornyn they way he did, as you said Allah, typical of someone on the left…
The next time Michelle is on the air with him, she should ask how his broken nose is doing.
Zorro on June 8, 2007 at 10:25 PM
AP, are you aware of the new YouTube feature that permits people to browse other videos on your site? If you’re worried about content control, add &rel=0 to the end of the url to turn it off.
Laura on June 8, 2007 at 10:25 PM
It was absolutely pathetic the way Geraldo went on after Michelle so that he could take cheap shots at her arguments and not have her slam him with her responses.
If you want to take shots, then be a man about it and do it to her face at least.
Cowardly.
JayHaw Phrenzie on June 8, 2007 at 10:25 PM
It’s apparent that Geraldo and the loony left are _______ (insert noun) before they are Americans.
SouthernGent on June 8, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Why is it that Geraldo pull out the racism card, when he’s called out on something? Either that or he pulls out the sympathy “Pulling families apart”.
amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 10:27 PM
“We would have lost all of those great ten years of John Lennon living in the U.S.A.!”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
As long as we’re making bizarre arguments:
I blame the (relative) lower quality of his 70s work to his living here!
Better yet:
John Lennon would be alive today if he hadn’t immigrated!
Alex K on June 8, 2007 at 10:27 PM
Although the “Is Michelle Malkin a closet 9/11 Truther” video is actually pretty funny. It would be even better had I dropped some acid first.
Laura on June 8, 2007 at 10:28 PM
I would’ve hated if we had lost all of those years of Lennon’s daisy @ss pandering, appeasement, “give peace a chance” bull, which we’re still dealing with today. What a tragedy it would’ve been.
amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 10:29 PM
Well Mark David Chapman didn’t miss John Lennon…..sorry!!
EnochCain on June 8, 2007 at 10:31 PM
According to Wiki (admittedly, not always a reliably source), Geraldo Rivera was born with the name “Geraldo Miguel Rivera” to a Puerto-Rican father and a Jewish mother–Americans both (yes I know that PR is a US territory). If that was indeed his birth name, the insistence on calling him “Jerry Rivers” seems strange. Why do it?
That said, I agree with AP and others regarding Mr. Rivera. One wonders how we got by in the past with such unreasonable people forming our opinions.
baldilocks on June 8, 2007 at 10:34 PM
Thank you Michelle for setting the record straight. I am so sick and tired of O’Reilly’s “deport them all” straw man i could scream. I guess I should be grateful he doesn’t call us racists and bigots.
Geraldo is what he is. We all know his goals and we all know his tactics.
TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 10:35 PM
It must be one of those Dem talking points they get via fax each morning.
I have heard the same from Juan Williams, goofy Colmes, etc. a lot lately.
I guess they think that the “what about the children” mantra will work if they say it enough even if they don’t give a crap about them.
BacaDog on June 8, 2007 at 10:35 PM
Can Geraldo get anymore irrational & emotional? If you have to use emotion to argue than you’ve already lost. How about some logic and facts? I despise the “the problem is too big so let’s do nothing crowd.” In reality the problem can be solved if the existing laws are enforced. The first stpe is securing the border once and for all.
Stay on top of your rep’s!
VikingGoneWild on June 8, 2007 at 10:36 PM
I couldn’t believe Geraldo said that about Michelle, what a bastard.
Whatever, he Godwinned, so he lost anyway. This segment was very revealing in respect to Bill, and I’m disappointed in him, not that I expect much.
Bad Candy on June 8, 2007 at 10:37 PM
It’s become clear that geraldo is a racist in the vein of al sharpton and jesses jackson et al. He wants a permanent browning of america because he sees the supposed culture of privilege provided only to whites. Bill O needs to needle him a couple more times before geraldo says something he wont be able to take back. Then he will have worn out his welcome on Fox just as he has in every other forum he has been on.
csdeven on June 8, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Geraldo who?
Oh, you mean Gerry from Brooklyn. I think that I’ve heard of him. Wasn’t he the mouth-piece for some New York city gang back in the ’70s? I thought that I read that somewhere.
Franklin Hill on June 8, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Oh, and Bill, for the record:
Why the Senate Immigration Bill Failed
TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Solid laying into, despite your professional restraint. I’d hate to see old Jerry Rivers after an unfettered AP lashing.

V15J on June 8, 2007 at 10:46 PM
Geraldo is an ignorant, pompous, lime light seeking ass. Michelle is absolutely right. Deport the criminals, enforce our laws and withdraw the freebies that illegals shouldn’t be receiving anyway … and most will leave.
Stuff it Geraldo … liar. I hope you read this thread.
darwin on June 8, 2007 at 10:46 PM
Ha Ha O Rielly say’s “I would have had John and Yoko paddeling to Liverpool in a kayak.” Ha Ha Ha Don’t be so mean Bill. Funny how success liquidates the former passion you had on the way up on the struggle from the bottom . Geraldo did a migrant worker piece in the sixties or early seventies full of passion and emotion. Now he is worried if someone will pull his son’s pants down to check their private parts. He has lost all credibility especially with the “face like mine remark” It makes me wonder if he’s simply been an opportunist all these years in the role of a parasite on his own people.
sonnyspats1 on June 8, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Regarding Exhibit B, for all its ranting the NYT’s editorial board doesn’t realize that the American public is still way smarter than them - in the latest Rasmussen poll only 20+ agree with the dog this compromising bill would have been.
You’d think the NYTs would laud President Bush and those for it for trying hard, against their own numbers. No, instead they use this editorial to nail them. They are creating a huge Latino-against-conservatives casm.
Everyone who opposes it should not let their guard down. The bulldogs are rabid and are fighting. Reid said today “I will revive this bill somehow”. Well, if he revives it to the point of his vitality there is hope that it’ll be pretty listless for a while.

And following the Factor, Hannity And Colmes spent 50 minutes covering Paris Hilton with the final segment being Ollie North. Way to go Fox.

Glad to see Michelle put Bill in his place on this topic. Old Bill has a fondness for the hyperbole. Odd, as his show is the “no spin” zone. He reminds me why I stopped watching the Fox Primetime lineup.
Nothing good to say about Geraldo.

Rivera is a typical liberal who uses righteous indignation, name calling and race baiting to intimidate anyone with whom he disagrees. Unfortunately, for him, that tactic is very well known and has little to no utility.

Which is why he is irrelevant and maybe even helps with these ridiculous tirades. Bill is the one who can do real damage and Michelle mopped the floor with him. I saw it live and watched it twice more here. That’s how much I enjoyed it. He finally got called out on his idiotic emotional straw man. I love it! Love it! Thank you again Michelle. You really made my night.
TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 10:58 PM
Michelle, I know you’ve linked this, and maybe you’re wearing it as a badge of pride, but if you’re reading this, let him have it, you’re being way too classy about this.

Umm Gerryrando I hate to tell you but not all illegal Immigrants are hispanic. They come from many different nations.
William Amos on June 8, 2007 at 11:03 PM
Ya but he only cares about the Hispanics. If they were poles or Russians he would be calling for the roundup.
TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:05 PM
Maybe Geraldo would actually know and understand what MM thinks if he had the cajones to invite her onto his show and interview her face to face.
I honestly don’t think Geraldo reads her column or listens to her speak when she’s o BoR’s show. He most likely gets the summarized version written down by some half-wit J-school liberal intern.
Mindcrime on June 8, 2007 at 11:05 PM
I won’t even listen anymore when Geraldo is on, it just makes me cuss up a storm and want to throw things at the TV. Thank God for the ‘mute’ button.
And WTF is wrong with O’Reilly? Every time Michelle is on she has to set him straight (again) on how all conservatives aren’t foaming at the mouth for mass deportation. Get a clue Bill!
infidel4life on June 8, 2007 at 11:05 PM
I’ll leave the invective (or lack thereof) to her 10:09 pm by Allahpundit . I Think the (or lack thereof) part is what makes her the boss, in this instance. Your hearts in the right place though.
sonnyspats1 on June 8, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Yeah that whole show was a joke. Why discuss such topics like I don’t know… Islamofascism, Illegal immigration, The Iranian Hitler, Russia? That would be a little too interesting.
H/C, Greta, OReilly and Red Eye are now one in the same. Red Eye wins.
V15J on June 8, 2007 at 11:06 PM
The Fox primetime block doesn’t really matter for a lot of us, because most of us have already seen what’s going on here or somewhere online.
Bad Candy on June 8, 2007 at 11:11 PM
What’s odd is that the New York Times finally gets conservatives: from your “exhibit B” update-
That pretty much sums up my position, and I really could care less, “Geraldo” Rivers, whether you’re Latino or not.
billy on June 8, 2007 at 11:17 PM
Yep!…I’ll see stories on FOX 24-48 hours after HA or another blog picks them up…
The NYT op-ed in the news links bags specific Republicans and not a single word about the 11 Dems who voted ‘ney’ on cloture.
Bill O vs MM…….easy……look out Bill,,,,look out! Would love to see a Neilsen smackdown between them. May the best conservative win.
Geraldo…….(pffffttttttt)

Thank God they let the women go because they’re babies need milk?
In America if you commit a crime expect to be separated from your children.
Like I’ve said before minus the emotional content illegal migration and residence is just…illegal.
Minus the emotional content, Geraldo is just another hack Al Sharpton wannabe.
Speakup on June 8, 2007 at 11:19 PM
Why is he acting like Americans are going to other countries and MAKING illegals come here and then dividing their families? Every illegal immigrant here has chosen to be here, which is against the law. Don’t commit crimes, don’t get separated from your family!
Ugh, Gerry’s irrational argument is SO frustrating. How can you argue with something that makes no sense? Did he honestly say “nursing babies crying for milk??” I actually laughed out loud at that.

That goes back to the dishonest NYT editorial that, in connection with the New Bedford raid, was claiming crazy things like nursing mothers were taken away from their children and had to be rushed to the hospital. Bill busted them on it. Turns out 1 kid had to go to the hospital with pneumonia and was with a sitter. The Mother never told them she had a kid, never mind a sick kid, at home iirc.
TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:40 PM
Geraldo the poseur frames most of his babbling in racial terms - more than anyone else does. Seems he needs to sweep out his own house of his hard-core stereotypes before he starts laying into anyone else.
Why oh why does he get media time? He’s an uninformed hysterical camera hog. The media bigwigs really think he attracts viewers? If Geraldo shows up on screen, the credibility of the news drops by fully one-half, more if he opens his mouth.

No matter what congress does?
Secure the borders, dry up the jobs and these people will leave on their own. I don’t care if we miss a mil or 2, that we can deal with. 2 million would be easy to deport.
csdeven on June 8, 2007 at 11:52 PM
Is the government not allowing the deportees to take their families with them? That is what it sounds like. Nobody is forcing them to leave their families behind. Besides, what happens to a family when an American citizen is convicted of a crime and sent to prison? I don’t hear the MSM complaining about the broken families when a convicted felon has to serve out his/her sentence.
DAT60A3 on June 8, 2007 at 11:53 PM
Did you hear geraldo whining about all the hate mail he gets? He tried to spin it as a general accusation that anyone who opposes this bill is a racist.
I think I’ll send him an email and calmly explain to him how wrong he is.
csdeven on June 8, 2007 at 11:55 PM
If Geraldo is so upset about families being divided, why is he opposing deportation? Won’t that reunite families in Mexico? Who’s doin’ the dividin’ here?
I’m all in favor of increasing the quotas for legal immigration, and by a lot. But I want them legal, not just coming willy-nilly and with nary a wave hello from federal authorities. I was an immigrant once, to Brazil, and they weren’t a bit shy about asking about my police record, employment, health record and immunizations, etc. and they had every right to demand those things because it’s their freakin’ country. Why is the US not allowed to do these things?
Jeffersonian on June 9, 2007 at 12:01 AM
Rudolph Giuliani was the first of the major candidates to pop up a statement (not yet online): “The American people demand that their politicians enact an immigration reform bill that addresses security first. I cannot support any immigration deal that compromises on this basic principle. This bill failed to guarantee a uniform, tamper-proof, biometric identification card, a single nation-wide database of foreigners in our country, and did not mandate the full implementation of a biometric check-in, check-out system. We can and must guarantee the American people that we know who is coming in and out of our country. As President, my administration will dedicate itself to assuring the American people that we have a secure border.”
NYT thinks it can’t be done huh>
sonnyspats1 on June 9, 2007 at 12:01 AM

Excellent. I know it. I’ve been reading her books and columns for years.
I still think Michelle ought to consider a run for office. With Michelle, what you see is what you get. There won’t be any BS with her. And I trust her to make the right decisions.
jaleach on June 9, 2007 at 12:09 AM
Baldilocks.
While he was born “Geraldo Rivera” when he first started in TV News he used the name “Gerry Rivers” to be more “acceptable” I suppose. I think he even started out using that name on 20/20 when it first aired (late 70’s) before going back to his actual name.
Either way the guy’s a flippin’ moron.
What I want to know is why does illegal alien status make one exempt from “having their family ripped apart” by being arrested? I don’t see anyone else arrested for violation of federal law being given the same consideration.
Newman65 on June 9, 2007 at 12:12 AM
The job of the government is to govern not to coddle. Go Michelle!
Mojave Mark on June 9, 2007 at 12:12 AM

sonnyspats1 on June 9, 2007 at 12:35 AM
I am sick & tired of the argument that we can NOT do ANYTHING with the 12-20 million people here. By this logic we have no sovereignty and take over by invasion is just fine. What if it was 40 million or 100 million? Are we just going to say OK? You do not need guns to take over a country. Bill’s rhetoric on this is almost as bad as Geraldo’s. This emotive crap is how you lose a country. Attrition will work but of course we must secure the border first.
Altura Ct. on June 9, 2007 at 12:38 AM
Can we just deport ‘Herraldo’ and keep a couple of million of the more decent, hard-working illegals instead?
I swear; ‘Herraldo’ is more of a ‘girl’ (emotionally) than Michelle. I was driving down the road, listening to this on XM when it aired… had to turn it off 20 seconds into his over-the top tirade.
So…. He is afraid that his children (who are of 1/4 Puerto Rican descent and 3/4 ‘white’ and probably don’t ‘habla’ more than ten words of ‘espanol’) are going to be harassed by some right-wing Immigration Police and interred or killed (or at the very least have their pants pulled down???) if amnesty and immediate citizenship isn’t granted to every Mexican and South American person who wants to come to America?
What a dork. They are more likely to be harassed because their father is an idiotic media whore.
And as usual, O’Reilly was unwatchable too. I pray for the day that Michelle takes over for him permanently and both he and Jerry Rivers have the opportunity to stand in line at the welfare office.
LegendHasIt on June 9, 2007 at 1:22 AM
The Boss has to stop doing the O’Reilly Factor. She’s propping up that crazy coot. It’s time to let him start talking to himself.
I won’t make the decision to break up any families. Only the family can do that. If the whole family is illegal, send them home as a unit. I don’t think they should be broken up. God, family, country.
If these people were home (whatever country home is) there would be more pressure for those countries to improve. Why is the US used to bleed off the pressure of other countries?

Here’s the Snopes.com article about the whole “Jerry Rivers” issue. According to them, it’s an urban legend. Their summary:
I despise the guy, he’s dead wrong, and he was way out of line with Michelle, but we’ll all look more credible if we stick to hammering him on the issues.
ReubenJCogburn on June 9, 2007 at 3:04 AM
I used to beleive and repeat the Jerry Rivers thing, and I remember where I saw it–PARADE magazine. The Personality Parade section. This would have been back in the eighties when I was a young whippersnapper who believed everything I read in the Daily Oklahoman, instead of just Frank Boggs, Argus Hamilton, and the editorial page.

this sounds racist but i am starting to look at geraldo the same i way i look at al sharpton. they both cover themselves in their ethnicity. that is sad until this immigration mess started i did not think about him as hispanic. that is what is sooooo great about michelle she is AMERICAN first ASIAN second.
bootheel on June 9, 2007 at 4:50 AM
Why?
The ‘if you look like me’ thing was especially stupid. I don’t know if you realize this, Ger, but if your name wasn’t Rivera, most people would think you’re white. I was wondering when in his rant he was going to throw out his newfound affiliation with La Raza, after all, if he’s going to recite their talking points, he might as well give them credit.
Wolfman on June 9, 2007 at 5:32 AM
Gilarado Rivera is putting his Latino race before being an American law biding citizen. Talking about his “Hispanic Sons”. WTF? They were born here. They are Americans. Probably more than Gilardo is acting right now.
Race baiting trash. I guess Giraldo needs special treatment because he’s a victim too.

YOU’VE GOTTA LOVE THE NYT!!!
The Cornyn proposed amendment 1184 which was voted down:
Ensure that aliens who have been convicted of certain crimes, such as gang-related offenses, failure to register as a sex offender, and alien smuggling while using a firearm, are ineligible for immigration benefits
” Provide that a felony-level conviction for illegal entry or illegal re-entry is part of the definition of aggravated felony and therefore a bar to admission
” Bar aliens determined to have committed terrorist acts from establishing good moral character-a requirement to gain permanent resident status under current law
” Provide that an alien is subject to deportation if the alien has been convicted of social security crimes (under 42 U.S.C. § 408) or identity fraud or theft under the criminal code (18 U.S.C. § 1028).
” Ensure that those aliens ordered to leave the United States and who failed to do so are not given legal status
” Provide that an alien is ineligible for a Z visa if the alien:
o Is convicted of an aggravated felony,
o Failed to register as a sex offender as required by federal law
o Is convicted for high speed flight from an immigration checkpoint
o Is a terrorist or a threat to national security
o Is subject to a final order of removal for document fraud

Today’s NYT editorial:
John Cornyn wanted to strip confidentiality protections for immigrants who apply for legal status, making them too frightened to leave the shadows.

Geraldo is an idiot. Someone should break his nose.
Wait… nevermind…

I was waiting for a while last night for this to be posted after Geraldo made that crack. My disgust for him knows no bounds. I didn’t think I could like him any less but then he pulls that crap.

I’d like to see Michelle do a special edition “Vent” first, and then follow up by taking AP’s gloves off.
I’m already having this mental image of the “BAM!” “POW!” gag from the old Batman TV show.

I didn’t read the previous 90 comments but Geraldo is a freakshow. He’s obnoxious, annoying, and a flaming liberal.
Michelle is a lady. Always a lady even when she is verbally crucifying the pathetic opposition.
Geraldo needs to go. He’s disgusting.
PoliticallyIncorrectSandy on June 9, 2007 at 8:47 AM
Rivera is a typical liberal. He uses obfucscation, self righteous indignation, race baiting and coercive indtimidation to achieve compliance or submission by his philosophical and political adversaries. Michelle didn’t fall for it and neither should anyone else.

Neither Bill or Geraldo get it. Bill says people call his show and want mass deportation, duh. I would like it as well, but I know the better way is to have them go back to their country voluntarily so they won’t be sneaking back in at another date.
Until people like Bill or Geraldo have their home prices go down because of people breaking zoning laws, have the crime rate in their communities go up, see more street signs in Spanish than English, have grocery stores and shops with “Spanish Only,” then they might understand why people want them deported.
I want these “good people” to be good citizens of Mexico and wherever else they come from. I don’t want to live in Little Mexico.

I’ve pretty much had enough of O’Reilly. He’s become another tool and another pro-amnesty prick. Enforce the laws, eliminate benefits illegals shouldn’t be getting anyway and punish businesses that hire harshly. The problem will take care of itself.
Oh yeah … screw you Geraldo, you racist.

I wonder what those of us that are Hispanic US Citizens by birth (b/c our parents came the legal way) and those who have legally become residents, like my husband are. Racists? Bigots? Nazis?
I don’t understand why this is so hard to understand by the left. Illegal immigration is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from legal immigration.

And meanwhile in GA our 2 senators, Isakson and Chambliss who voted “Nay” apparently aren’t quite ready to throw in the towel. This from a story in the AJC, our local rag.
