Video: An unusual ad

The ad itself is slick and tech-y but not particularly unusual. What’s unusual is where it aired — at around 9:20 p.m. ET, after the first few blocks of … “Hannity & Colmes,” on the Fox News Channel.

Exit question one: Has it really come to this for that sad-sack news outfit? Exit question two: What would Olby say?

“fuller” is that even a word? isn’t it “more full” ?

lorien1973 on June 8, 2007 at 10:58 PM

They went digital since they don’t want America to see how White and male pMSNBC is? Just a theory.

SouthernGent on June 8, 2007 at 10:58 PM

The MSNBC ad aired on Fox News. Pathetic.

amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 11:00 PM

I’ve caught ads for CNN on Fox recently. I think they are being inserted by local cable companies in their local slots rather than being run nationally…I didn’t see that MSNBC ad but I could have just missed it.

TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:02 PM

I got four messages: cloning, gas prices, wind power, hurricanes.

In a word: objective.

Hmmm. But MSNBC.com is anything but a local brand.

And don’t leave one thing out: this is directed at the folks who don’t want to be characterized as on of the SHEEPLE watching Fox news

Hobbie on June 8, 2007 at 11:10 PM

Yes, but add-time is money FoxNews pocket, right?

Kini on June 8, 2007 at 11:10 PM

Maybe its the bad way thats put together but I swear the message I got was “Watch MSNBC News. The Sheeple do to get their cloning news”

William Amos on June 8, 2007 at 11:12 PM

Not this particular ad, but this is not a new thing. CNN, MSNBC and other news shows have advertised during FOX’s primetime before.

Kind of sad though isn’t it? If you’re one of the few watching MSNBC, you hear from Olby how they’re kicking ass. Flip to FOX and you see MSNBC ads. Why?

BacaDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:13 PM

Hmmm. But MSNBC.com is anything but a local brand.

Yes, but the local stations can sell their ad time to pretty much anyone they want (within FCC broadcast rules, of course) If CNN or MSNBC shows up with a suitcase full of cash or a big check, do you honestly think these local guys aren’t gonna just say “OK, when do you want it to air?”

And what is to stop these guys from selecting 10 or 15 (or 20 or 30, for that matter.) of the largest national markets to target for these ads? Seems to me like any company with the deep pockets and large staffs of CNN or MSNBC can certainly afford to send a few grunts out on the phones to buy up local airtime in big markets. Not a conspiriacy, just good marketing savvy.

wearyman on June 8, 2007 at 11:19 PM

I won’t mention names but it seems to me some loudmouth thread jacker types attempt that nuanced move her at HA. The commercial spot is either a desperation move on the part of MSNBC or the whole lot of em are conspiring. Waaa My head hurts.

sonnyspats1 on June 8, 2007 at 11:20 PM

Its better than those damn Head On ads.

nailinmyeye on June 8, 2007 at 11:21 PM

Hmmm. But MSNBC.com is anything but a local brand.

I think they are buying time from players like Comcast and TimeWarner and having them inserted into their spots (they get a certain number of spots per hour per cable station) across a spectrum of cable channels.

The only reasons I know CNN did that is I happen to catch a little Comcast logo or something in the CNN ad.

It can be cheaper and easier than buying time directly from the channel. It also allows them to spread the ads around different channels w/o having to commit to a national buy. It also lets them focus on certain markets like Metro areas.

I’ve done it. I placed ads on national channels in just the markets I wanted to reach by using the spots owned by the cable provider. I think this is what they are doing. I don’t think Fox would take an MSNBC ad for competitive reasons.

Did an Ad for the cable provider and/or a more local ad run just before or after the ad AP? If so, that’s usually a tip off.

TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:28 PM

wearyman on June 8, 2007 at 11:19 PM

I should have read beyond AP’s post because I pretty much wasted my time saying the same thing ;)

They may have not even have decided to run the ads on Fox. They may have used a media buying company and gave them a basic set of criteria for the type of stations they want and the MBC chose to buy time on Fox… just a hunch.

TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:35 PM

This ads been running here for several weeks now. I still don’t watch msnbc.

TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:28 PM

A few months ago, in the mail segment of O’Reilly’s show, someone wrote asking why Fox was showing ads for CNN. O’Reilly’s answer was “because the check cleared”. So, it sounds like Fox doesn’t have a problem taking ads from competitors.

forged rite on June 8, 2007 at 11:44 PM

Wow, that was a clusterf*ck of liberal propaganda…its interesting, it literally rolls the entire liberal mindset into a single commercial. Ignore the voices, mute it if you have to. The imagery speaks on its own.

Scary bombers fighting wars for oil, and the conservative sheeple that slavishly follow (you totally know what that meant, cloning my ass) , red carpets (because what is better to a lefty than an egomaniacal Hollywood liberal) a car (running on blood oil no doubt) followed by eco friendly windmills and money, and a tornado (undoutedly caused by global warming) their satellite, and the channel logo.

I think MSNBC knows its in trouble, so its gonna go hard left because its got nothing else to lose. Maybe I’m reading into it too much?

Bad Candy on June 8, 2007 at 11:50 PM

Did FNC ever have to resort to advertising on a competing network, even back in the old days? Maybe, but I doubt it.

kahall on June 8, 2007 at 11:52 PM

TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 11:35 PM

That’s all right TBOD. I don’t mind getting backup. :)

wearyman on June 8, 2007 at 11:56 PM

Maybe, but I doubt it.

kahall on June 8, 2007 at 11:52 PM

I’ve seen Fox ads on cnn headline news before. I think its pretty normal. Probably from a media buying company, but still.

lorien1973 on June 9, 2007 at 12:06 AM

David Gregory, Matt Lauer, Brian Williams, Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews……what is to watch? BDS, America is bad, BDS, Republicans are bad, BDS, Iraq is bad, BDS, FOX is bad,
hug your kid that isn’t bad, followed by more BDS.

MSNBC business plan: (****crickets chirping****)

If you’ve seen it then we have managed to clear that up before the weekend. I have only been subjected to CNN at the airport or the gym a few times in the last year or so.

kahall on June 9, 2007 at 12:11 AM

I like the ad. As for the placement, that’s just local buys on competing networks. pretty standard stuff in the biz.

Vincenzo on June 9, 2007 at 12:18 AM

Headline coverage of space shuttle Atlantis launch today:

FOX: NASA saves face reaches space
ABC: Patched up Atlantis blasts off
NBC: After tough six months Atlantis in space
CBS: Shuttle Atlantis blasts off without major problems

Nuance?

I would fallen over if any would have applauded the successful launch in the headline without couching it with government(read BUSH) incompetence or doom.

According to an editor of the Oxford Dictionary, yup, it is a word. According to her, if you want a word that doesn’t exist, make one up.

Helloyawl on June 9, 2007 at 1:32 AM

The next phase of their supersecret strategy is to air 30 to 60 seconds of MSNBC’s usual broadcast as an Ad on Fox News in order to see how many viewers they can get to change the channel.

Kevin on June 9, 2007 at 1:56 AM

GAG!!

georgej on June 9, 2007 at 2:30 AM

The funny thing is that ad for MSNBC on FOX got higher ratings than anything actually shown on MSNBC.

mlong on June 9, 2007 at 3:30 AM

This is a very common media buying strategy done by national networks, buying time on competitors channels at the local market level. Everyone does it.

wordwarp on June 9, 2007 at 3:50 AM

I suggest you slow down the movie and watch it closely… and make metaphorical observations

Kaptain Amerika on June 9, 2007 at 4:14 AM

1. a Stealth F117 Loses control and crashes headlong into the ground….
2. cloning is legalized and takes over…
3. a gas pump 5000 miles long shoots out of an American colored and roughly shaped land mass and shoots across the map to drowned a square that we have already been visually cued to think is a land mass cut into squares…symbolizing Iraq. into a complete black hole…
4. that turns into red stripes covering blue stripes racing toward a goal…
5. next seen all squares are red… car speeds by loses control and spins out.
6. now all squares yellow baked hot by the global warming, and there are wind collectors…
7. Money Shooting out of the ground…
8. tornado destroying blue squares…
9 a satellite or a symbol of technology flies by and then all the squares on the entire globe explode….

mmmmm…. just my metaphorical interpretation

Kaptain Amerika on June 9, 2007 at 4:27 AM

Time for the nutroots to boycott MSNBC for paying FOX News to run ads!

Seixon on June 9, 2007 at 7:50 AM

MSNBC seems to be running documentaries and movies during the evening instead of an MSNBC production. That seems like a death knell to me. Also, dumping Imus was a major blunder since his show seemed to have the highest ratings.

Hening on June 9, 2007 at 9:53 AM

CNN at one time seemed to be hiring every Fox news employee they could. There was a guy Spencer Christian who I think was the first to defect and after a couple of months reading the teleprompter he is now back on the local news in Atlanta. Good career move huh. Who can forget Rita “That voice grates my nerves” Cosby who made a much hyped move to MSNBC only to dissappear. I am surprised Greta hasn’t done a special on the missing blonde. And the latest which broke my heart was Kiran Chetry and her husband who also went to CNN. Kiran come back, all will be forgiven.
And yes I have CNN advertise on Fox for quite a while now which is always ironic. They do have Glenn Beck now who I enjoy on their Headline News channel and who apparentely has drawn the ire of Kuchinch for comments he made about the dwarfs wife. I don’t seem to remember the little one defending Fred!s wife when somebody else made some less then humorous comments.
Anyway it is all one big circus and while Fox has managed to stand out in the crowd mainly because they do still cover the news MSNBC has sank into the depths of obscurity much like Air America. The left still doesn’t get the message that the majority of Americans don’t like crybabies. That is all MSNBC comes across as anymore. Turn over there anytime of the day and it is the same song, different verse with no new perpective. If I want a heads up on what arguments Democrat lawmakers are going to use on a certain issue I watch to get the talking points but other then that more then 10 minutes on that channel makes me head for a quiet spot.

LakeRuins on June 9, 2007 at 10:15 AM

It’s kind of like the Beatles “Yellow Submarine” cartoon. I think a sheep is a perfect mascot for Mess-NBC.

Mojave Mark on June 9, 2007 at 10:46 AM

I think they’re trying to target their new audience – toddlers.

moonsbreath on June 9, 2007 at 10:48 AM

MSNBC = MSLSD

Tim Burton on June 9, 2007 at 1:54 PM

Don’t forget Mitt’s wife… MSLDS

Mojave Mark on June 9, 2007 at 2:58 PM

Exit question two: What would Olby say?

“Ladies and gentlemen, you’re all sheep, I’m the shepherd. Many thanks for watching. Good night, and good luck”.

Entelechy on June 9, 2007 at 3:04 PM

Seriously. Can you see that ad and not say to yourself, ‘fuller’ is MSNBC proving that ‘No Child Left Behind’ is not working.

Spirit of 1776 on June 9, 2007 at 9:47 PM

In a word: pathetic.

hillbillyjim on June 10, 2007 at 4:36 AM

Oh, by the way, Allahpundit, with your last few posts, you have proven why you are The Man. Keep up the good work.

I don’t even bother with NBC, ABC, CBS, & CNN. Much better coverage and more timely on HotAir. Keep up the excellent work. Sincerely, hillbillyjim

hillbillyjim on June 10, 2007 at 4:43 AM

I think that’s great! Take MSNBC’s ad dollars to target people who would never watch MSNBC! As the saying goes, “Sheep were made to be shorn,” pun intended.
