The Passion of the Heiress: Paris goes back to court; Update: Music video added! Update: Back to jail

posted at 11:55 am on June 8, 2007 by Bryan

A fluffy, ridiculous story has become actual news:

Hilton was ordered to report to court at 9 a.m. and will be brought in a sheriff’s vehicle from her Hollywood Hills home, said Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini…

The decision by Sheriff Lee Baca to move Hilton chafed prosecutors and Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer, who spelled out during sentencing that Hilton was not allowed to serve house detention.

Late Thursday, Sauer issued the order for Hilton to return to court after the city attorney filed a petition demanding that Hilton be returned to jail and to show cause why Baca shouldn’t be held in contempt of court.

Baca does not have to be in court, and it was unclear who would represent the Sheriff’s Department.

The move also was met with outrage from the sheriff’s deputies union, members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, civil rights leaders, defense attorneys and others.

“What transpired here is outrageous,” county Supervisor Don Knabe told The Associated Press, adding he received more than 400 angry e-mails and hundreds more phone calls from around the country.

It’s pretty much impossible to argue that she didn’t get preferential treatment based on being famous for being famous. Something like a third of the inmates in LA jails have worse medical conditions than hers, supposing she even really had one.

Who wants to lay odds on whether Sheriff Baca gets at least a public reprimand for yesterday’s actions?

And no, I’m not going to follow every detail and nuance of this story.

Update (AP): Cupcakes. Somehow it just seems so right.

Update: The judge has ordered Sheriff Baca to go get Hilton and haul her heiress self into the court to appear personally. So contrary to the report that’s up on Drudge, she can’t just phone it in.

Update (AP): Heart-ache.

Drudge is reporting she doesn’t even have to come back to court, just call in on the phone.

brak on June 8, 2007 at 11:56 AM

Did Paris work the pole to get out of jail early?

(come on; someone was gonna use that line!)

lorien1973 on June 8, 2007 at 11:57 AM

According to an article on Drudge, she doesn’t even have to appear – she only has to “phone in.”

You know, Al Sharpton is protesting. I really dislike Sharpton, but I have to agree with him on this one. She’s getting preferential treatment and should go back to jail. If it were some poor black dude, he’d rot before they’d let him out for “medical reasons.”

All the justice money can buy.

pullingmyhairout on June 8, 2007 at 11:58 AM

I had a friend who violated his probation and he was sick and they sentenced him to seven months and you will never believe what happened…he did all seven months!

EnochCain on June 8, 2007 at 11:59 AM

Fox News radio just reported that the judge has ordered Hilton to appear, despite earlier reports on phoning in. Not sure if that’s true or it’s unconfirmed.

amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 12:02 PM

This is getting out of the realm of outrageous. Put this spoiled brat in the slammer until her sentence if completed.

Wade on June 8, 2007 at 12:02 PM

Yeah, it looks like the judge says no to the phone in.

Paris is goin’ to court.

Slublog on June 8, 2007 at 12:03 PM

Au contraire. The judge just sent the sheriff to pick her up and bring her to court. He sounds pissed.

I guess there is a statute in CA that let’s the judge mandate that a prisoner not get the electronic braclet and he so ordered. Sounds like the sheriff is in for a spanking and the bimbo is going back in the can.

A few of my friends, ghost white types such as myself, had a week long vacation in “tent city” with no early out. The only color in play here is GREEN!

VikingGoneWild on June 8, 2007 at 12:03 PM

Yep, she’s been ordered to appear.

This is a breaking news update. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Paris Hilton was ordered to appear in court Friday instead of calling in from home, yet another reversal in her twisted path toward serving time on a probation violation.

Limerick on June 8, 2007 at 12:06 PM

I saw a teaser on Fox this morning for a story where they were asking the question of whether Paris’ early release would hurt her career.

She has a career?

nailinmyeye on June 8, 2007 at 12:06 PM

More interesting to me is how Najee Ali-director of Project Islamic Hope has jumped all over this..

VikingGoneWild on June 8, 2007 at 12:03 PM

true. that’s why I said that it’s all the justice money can buy.

pullingmyhairout on June 8, 2007 at 12:07 PM

Yeah, this is not about her being white. This is about her being a spoiled little rich kid, and in addition she just happens to be white.

James on June 8, 2007 at 12:08 PM

They need to lock her in a room and throw away the room.

EnochCain on June 8, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Her sentence was extreme, but there needed to be a sacrificial lamb (bad analogy, but you get it) to all of the Hollywood elite that they are not above the law. When the elite thumb there nose at the law, the judges should come down hard on them. Releasing her was a big mistake, I hope the judge sends her back, and this time Big Bertha should be her cell mate.

right2bright on June 8, 2007 at 12:09 PM

So would she do the 45 or the 23?
And how does the jailing process work? Why could she be sent to house arrest?

Iblis on June 8, 2007 at 12:10 PM

EnochCain on June 8, 2007 at 12:08 PM

I like that idea even better than throwing out the key! JK.

I don’t know who this judge is, but I like him. He’s holding her to it, and showing her she can’t get her way.

amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 12:10 PM

I’m shaking my head and rolling my eyes. I’m just sick of Paris. Instead of the slammer make her go to bootcamp!! An all womans bootcamp.

ChrisIansNana on June 8, 2007 at 12:11 PM

right2bright on June 8, 2007 at 12:09 PM

It’s only extreme in LA. In Florida they would’ve suspended her license for over a year, and thrown her in jail (possibly literally) for longer.

amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 12:11 PM

Trivia question: Which California Governor appointed Sauer (the judge) to the Los Angeles Municipal Court?

amerpundit on June 8, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Love the way this story is being spun in exactly the same what the amnesty story was spun…..

we are ‘bigots’ for not supporting the bill and ‘bigots’ for picking on rich people. Different day, same spin.

Limerick on June 8, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Why was the sentence (23 days) extreme? She was violating parole for drunk driving and was driving on a suspended licence. It’s a public safety issue, imho.

pullingmyhairout on June 8, 2007 at 12:14 PM

The only way this gets better is if she hops in a white bronco and makes a run for it.

Tru2my2 on June 8, 2007 at 12:17 PM

The problem here is that letting nonviolent offenders spend their time confined to quarters is not unusual in LA due to overcrowding. In fact, Michelle Rodriquez was ordered to jail just a few months ago for violating her LA court agreement when arrested for DUI in Hawaii when she was filming Lost. She served a day before being released if I recall correctly. The law is an ass because it isn’t applied the same way for everyone. It’s always been that way and isn’t likely to change. I doubt if many first-time DUI/suspended license offenders get 40 days in the slammer in LA because there wouldn’t be space for them. She pissed off the judge and that caused her problems. That’s not to say she and all the others shouldn’t spend time in the pokey for DUI and violating court agreements. They probably should.

Laddy on June 8, 2007 at 12:17 PM

Limerick has it correct…hospitalization soon. ( doc’s can be bought too ya know)

I’m no Paris fan at all, but to put this girl through all this public circus, while we have illegal immigrants being let go scott free for much worse crimes over and over just shows how completely unjust our justice system is. The sheriff who let her out should be held accountable. The Media is resposible for making News out of FOOLS. Fools include all Hollywood people and culture and the people who watch and worship them like Kings and Queens and even gods. IMHO
Exit ? Is Paris the new Rosie?

Justice is the issue . . . if she can be on home detention then everybody else in that jail with a similar offense and sentence should also be put on home detention. Of course that won’t happen because we all know that money is the critical difference. The legal system in California is an absolute sham.

rplat on June 8, 2007 at 12:38 PM

She is a 3 – peat offender, with 2 of those offenses while on so called probation. Remind me again what Libby did?

LakeRuins on June 8, 2007 at 12:39 PM

ok, last comment on this chick. Actually, it’s about her parents. WHO names their kid PARIS?????? Goes to show you what idiots her mom and dad are, saddling her with that name. What did they expect her to be? A doctor or CEO? With a name like PARIS, the only thing she’s remotely capable of doing is partying and looking pretty.

pullingmyhairout on June 8, 2007 at 12:39 PM

I don’t think its a racial thing as much as a celebrity thing. Nicole Ritchie would receive the same treatment as Paris Hilton. I’m guessing Sherrif Lee Baca just became the proud owner of a vacation villa in St. Tropez courtesy of the Hiltons.

ctmom on June 8, 2007 at 12:40 PM

Almost as newsworthy as Rosie. Nice eye candy, though.

If I’m ever convicted of a parole violation, I want to be treated like Paris Hilton.

If I ever get drunk and drive into a canal killing a woman, I want to be treated like Ted Kennedy.

If I ever murder my ex-wife and a male friend of hers, I want to be treated like OJ – but get acquitted because I am white.

If I ever get stinking drunk at 2:00 in the morning and start mowing down police barriers, I want to be treated like Patrick Kennedy and punish myself with a month in rehab.

If I ever rape a young girl, with my friends watching, I want to be acquitted like William Kennedy Smith.

If I ever commit perjury before a grand jury attempting to defend my adulterous affair with a 21 year old employee, I want to be treated like Bill Clinton and keep my job.

If I ever invest $1000 in commodities futures and turn it into $100,000 in less than six months, I want to be treated like Hillary Clinton and avoid being investigated by the SEC.

…..and way too many more to mention.

Besides I have not forgiven the Hilton family for tossing out the restaruant owners in DC who every Friday treated the wounded soldiers and their families to steak dinners on Fridays. The name escapes me right now, but ever since that was done I forbid the folks who book my travel stuff for work to make me reservations at any Hilton owned property.

You should take some of this white-hot ardency for Truth, Justice and the American Way and use it contacting the knaves who let Sandy Berger go with a mild admonishment.

There have been three classes of justice in the US for several years: 1) the wealthy (politicians, sports stars and celebrities of any race), 2) most of the rest of us and 3) poor people of color. What’s with the sudden outrage?

Her sentence was extreme…

right2bright on June 8, 2007 at 12:09 PM

Bullocks. I got busted for DUI in Georgia in 2002. Here, they don’t play. Minimum sentence on first offense: 2 to 30 days jail, 1 year driver’s license suspension, 1 year probation with minimum 60 days supervised (must visit P.O. weekly), 40 hours hard labor (which must be completed within 30 days of sentence), DUI education course (3 full days and $600), plus a $1,000 fine. Judges DO NOT have discretion except the length of the jail term, which cannot be less than 48 hours.

It was made VERY clear to me that if I violated probation I WOULD do the remainder of the 30 days IN JAIL, PLUS go back to court for a probation violation which would add another 30-90 days, not to mention have my D/L suspension doubled to two years.

Overall, it was a terrible experience. You can bet your A__ that I won’t ever do anything to get in trouble with the law again.

Paris got off with a slap on the wrist for first driving drunk and then for violating probation TWICE. Maybe that’s how they do things in California, but not in the rest of the country.

mojojojo on June 8, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Treacher, if you stop by, here’s one for RedEye you could pass on to your pals… I can’t believe Levy didn’t use it the other night when he covered the fact that Paris was being prevented from receiving any packages in prison. Gutfeld made some joke about a cake with a dildo baked inside, when the obvious joke was for he (or actually Levy probably) to say, “Greg, this marks the first time in Paris’s adult life that she hasn’t received at least one package for 3 consecutive days.” (or some other derivative of that). I was just disappointed, that there was an entire story on “packages” and not even Levy knocked it out.

When, oh when will that excuse for a sheriff, Baca, be frog-marched into court on contempt charges? Hmmm? I live in LA county and this d!ckwad gives CCWs to celebrities, lets them out of jail, and basically blows anyone that’s rich and famous. Me, I just want a CCW and I gotta jump through hoops and then I still don’t get one.

Limerick has it correct…hospitalization soon. ( doc’s can be bought too ya know)

People in jail get medical treatment all the time, either on site, or brought to the local hospital, treated, and hauled back to jail. IF her family can get a doctor who wants to play games like that, he or she had better have a REALLY good story, because it’ll be all over the news, other doctors will be on the air critiquing the diagnosis, etc. What doctor wants to be under that kind of national scrutiny for a BS diagnosis?

I agree to an extent. I too dislike Sharpton, and I too feel Paris should NOT recieve any special treatment. But Sharpton is a snake and is only jumping on this to further his racist agenda. Even poor whites are subject to no liniency and without the race card as a get out of jail free card.

It’s the Rich – White AND Black that the laws don’t apply to.

Bearhopi on June 8, 2007 at 7:05 PM

Actually, in an unbelievably high minded move (for him), Sharpton did say that a white coal miner’s daughter or a black hip hop singer wouldn’t have gotten the same treatment. My reply to that: hip hop stars wouldn’t get the same treatment because so many of them brag about being criminals, it would have been better if you’d stayed with the common man when looking for a black example.

I saw something interesting on Fox yesterday. They had a defense attorney and a prosecuter on to debate whether Paris was getting celebrity justice. I correctly presumed that the defense attorney was going to be a snake, but it went beyond my expectations. She actually tried to argue that Paris was being treated harsher than she would have if she weren’t famous. She cited the fourty some day sentance as evidence of her claim, even though that has been totally irrelevant since they cut it in half. I think that was the only thing she could point to though. It reinforced something I’ve long believed: never trust a lawyer, especially a defense attorney.
