Video: Byron Dorgan dismembers the “grand compromise”

posted at 10:15 pm on June 7, 2007 by Allahpundit

I meant to post this earlier but he went on for half an hour and there were plenty of choice bits to sift. You won’t see many righteous pro-labor rants on this site, but even if you don’t agree with everything here, appreciate the oratory. Nothing bombastic about it, just a very smooth blend of reason and passion with a sprinkling of contempt for the self-righteous jackasses who stitched this Frankenstein together in a back room and then acted pissy when the world didn’t genuflect before it.

It’s eight minutes, but stick with it. You won’t be sorry.

Now that my friend is a Democrat. May God Bless him.

sonnyspats1 on June 7, 2007 at 10:32 PM

Nice.

He must be a bigot though, since he’s against the bill. Right?

He didn’t have any intelligent argument against the bill.

lorien1973 on June 7, 2007 at 10:34 PM

Who is this guy, and how do we clone him 99 more times?

csdeven on June 7, 2007 at 10:37 PM

Well, I hope he enjoyed being a senator. The Dems will have him marked for annihilation next election.

Labamigo on June 7, 2007 at 10:43 PM

Who is this guy, and how do we clone him 99 more times?

Be careful. 1 vote doesn’t make him right on everything.

Crap! Well, we will just have to let the 100 vote on border security and then pull a “prestige” on him and get 100 new guys for the next issue. :-)

csdeven on June 7, 2007 at 10:50 PM

Good stuff; from a Democrat no less. Every time he said “piece of legislation,” I thought that he wanted to say piece of something else.

baldilocks on June 7, 2007 at 10:51 PM

Heh. Not bad. An honest and simple statement from a pol, a Democrat pol at that. Not bad.

thegreatbeast on June 7, 2007 at 10:53 PM

“Where is the American worker in this discussion? Who is looking out for the Americans”

Amen to that. Everyone is going nuts to make this bill oh-so-perfect for the illegal aliens, but what about the legal immigrants and the citizens? Where do we figure into this conversation? Is anyone looking out for our best interests?

I said something along those lines in the email I wrote Sen Warner this morning. It seems like they want to sell out the people here legally (citizen and immigrant alike) in favor of a class of people who have shown disrespect to this country by ignoring our rules.

Great clip. Let it never be said that HA doesn’t represent diverse viewpoints.

Enrique on June 7, 2007 at 11:07 PM

I saw his whole speech on C-SPAN, One has got to wonder how many Senators were squirming during this.

Tough border security talk…..from a Democrat

Man, I need a friggin’ drink cause I’m officially confused as hell.

The Ugly American on June 7, 2007 at 11:18 PM

Gotta give ol Dorgan credit, he did good. Real good. Huh.

Bad Candy on June 7, 2007 at 11:23 PM

Great speech…I agree with The Ugly American.

It’s like I’m in a parallel universe.

Slublog on June 7, 2007 at 11:25 PM

TUA, this is how things work when an issue doesn’t break down to “us vs. them”; people on both sides of the aisle arguing both sides of the issue. Been a long, long time since it was this way, as best I can tell.

As for Dorgan — for whom I have rarely had any respect or admiration — his last statement on what they ought to be doing is Letter Perfect. Many have said the same exact thing here on this page over the last months.

Jaibones on June 7, 2007 at 11:29 PM

Dang, this guy can be sharper than a tack once in awhile. That was well done, and should be required viewing for everyone. Nicely done, Senator.

Tough border security talk…..from a Democrat

A true Dem is supposed to care about working American families – the little guy. Any Dem even remotely in touch with his constituents knows exactly how illegal immigration, and massive new immigration affects them and how they feel about this issue. They are being squeezed out of factory jobs by outsourcing (esp to China) and now they are being squeezed out of the trades and other blue collar jobs by illegal immigrants. Some Dems are willing to sell these people out for a new dependent class of reliable votes. Guys like this are not.

TheBigOldDog on June 8, 2007 at 12:02 AM

Impressive.

His hair, that is. Makes Trent Lott’s aquanet-and-epoxy helmet look like Jenathan from RedEye.

Speech was good too. Not many real orators in the Senate, on either side, who say things worth listening to.

see-dubya on June 8, 2007 at 12:06 AM

I think Ted Kennedy killed Lindsey Graham and is wearing his skin.
I just don’t know how Ted fit into the suit?

Kini on June 8, 2007 at 1:14 AM

Best speech I haver heard from a Dem since the 2004 republican
convention.

MalkinFan on June 8, 2007 at 1:18 AM

MAN! That guy made sense!

I sure hope there are other Democrats that hold similar Sane opinions.

Damn. Interesting times indeed.

techno_barbarian on June 8, 2007 at 1:38 AM

Too bad he’s not running for President. I mean, wow, a Dem that doesn’t make you flinch when they speak!

gmoonster on June 8, 2007 at 1:43 AM

We know the Dem senators are for this bill, but what about the people? Are they as up in arms as us? Surely no right minded American can support this insanity.

ctmom on June 8, 2007 at 7:54 AM

NAFTA was the genesis of this illegal alien invasion nightmare and Byron Dorgan has always been against NAFTA and other bullcrap free trade deals.

NAFTA sent our low priced MidWest corn to Mexico, thus displacing (estimates) 3 million Mexican peasants. Guess where these people headed to? NAFTA was the beginning of this North American Union push with this amnesty being a major milestone. To make labor as borderless as capital

Thank God we dodged this bullet ….. for the time being

dennisw on June 8, 2007 at 10:25 AM

Damn. I had no idea that there were rational, intelligent Democrats out there. You learn something every day. Has Kos organized a purge to get Dorgan out yet?

morganfrost on June 8, 2007 at 11:33 AM

Great words from Byran “Helmet Head” Dorgan. Hell must have frozen over.

jeffshow on June 8, 2007 at 1:14 PM

Dorgan is from North Dakota, a conservative state, last elected by a 70 percent majority.
