Lott’s ultimatum: Do we have the courage to pass this craptastic bill?

Thanks to Hugh Hewitt for rescuing this golden moment from anonymity. Here’s the former majority leader doing his level best to make his party a permanent minority by demanding to know if the Senate has the gusts, the nerve, the raw testicular fortitude to ram through this disastrous piece of open-borders shinola.

Let his fawning praise for conservative hero Ted Kennedy be the epitaph for this travesty.

disolve congress and and go home? Now there’s a sensible idea.

Editor on June 7, 2007 at 7:48 PM

I am listening to Sen Chambliss R?-GA talking about some amendment he brokered with Feinstein and my god it is language only a lawyer can love. I for the life of me have not a clue what the amendment was supposed to do and if I can’t, how the hell can a non English speaking person with no law degree figure it out?
/or average Joe on the street for that matter

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 7:49 PM

I used to have a tiny bit of respect for Trent.

Now it’s a whole lot of disrespect.

Speakup on June 7, 2007 at 7:50 PM

National suicide is fun!

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 7:50 PM

I read the transcript of his little speech, and noted where Lott says basically, ‘hey, after all these years, just trust me.’ Uh, no thanks.

Spirit of 1776 on June 7, 2007 at 7:53 PM

When did the Repubs become D-WHIPPED.

Maybe we should support stem cell research so we can grow a spine and balls

400lb Gorilla on June 7, 2007 at 7:53 PM

These idiots are so detached from reality.

Lott: “This is one of the biggest issues facing this country”??

Hey stupid a$$!! It has been for 20 years and now you want to ram this through in 2 weeks? Write a piece of legislation that solves a problem that got more complex as the years have passed and you want to ram this through?!

Here’s a clue for you moron……if you wanted to solve this with a two week bill, you should have started the day after the 1986 amnesty bill passed!

I can’t believe we elect jerks like this.

csdeven on June 7, 2007 at 7:53 PM

Yeah Trent, let’s see who the men and mice are.

My guess is, if you and the other 48 Republicans vote “present” on this abortion of a bill, there won’t be more than a small handful of Democrats who want their names attached to it.

p.s. (Thanks AP problem apparently solved)

Jimnospin on June 7, 2007 at 7:53 PM

You know what the scariest part of this whole thing is? My whole family is watching CSPAN watching this charade and hurling some pretty good one liners at the talking suits. The kid is 18 and is watching. It is the first time I have seen her in 3 months without a door between us.
See there is always some good in everything.

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 7:57 PM

I feel sorry for anyone from Mississippi that has to defend this idiot. Another one that needs to be taken out by a primary challenger next time he’s up for reelection.

thirteen28 on June 7, 2007 at 7:59 PM

Not only craptastic, but craptacular and crapilicious. And Lott, El Presidente Jorge, St. John of Tijuana, and the rest of the shamnesty crowd somehow expect all of us to want to take a bite. How ’bout no?

ReubenJCogburn on June 7, 2007 at 8:07 PM

That would be Trent “damn tired of those porkbusters” Lott, who blackmailed State Farm after Katrina in order to get them to pay for damages to one of his houses that his policy didn’t cover, and then screwed the insurance companies anyway?

Yeah, he should go home. And stay there.

Laura on June 7, 2007 at 8:08 PM

We are not idiots Lott. This bill needs to be trashed and incinerated as quickly as possible and no amount of attempted intimidation and threats will change those facts. Lott is another one that needs to be taken off the public feeding trough.

rplat on June 7, 2007 at 8:12 PM

Is your senator smarter then a fifth grader?

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 8:15 PM

how can Trent talk with Ted’s D**k in his mouth?

400lb Gorilla on June 7, 2007 at 8:18 PM

As we said after the Nov elections…what the Republican party needs is More. Trent. Lott. !

lorien1973 on June 7, 2007 at 8:21 PM

My whole family is watching CSPAN
LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 7:57 PM

My family watches Katie Couric almost every night, just to P1$$ me off! Very sad isn’t it

abinitioadinfinitum on June 7, 2007 at 8:24 PM

They’re voting on cloture right now.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:29 PM

Are we looking for Yeas or Nays?

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 8:35 PM

32 Nays so far.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:36 PM

We’re screwed.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:37 PM

Good for Burr, he voted “nay”

Hagel, Lugar: you suck

Dudley Smith on June 7, 2007 at 8:37 PM

Oh Crap I agree with Robert KKK byrd and Barbara Boxer voting NO on cloture

400lb Gorilla on June 7, 2007 at 8:41 PM

Getting real close. Tester, Webb, Snow, Collins, even Boxer all voting “no.” If PRCalDude was right when he said 32 votes against, then we’ve passed 40 by now.

Dudley Smith on June 7, 2007 at 8:41 PM

I think it may have failed.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:42 PM

I think we’re up to like 41 ‘nays’.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:42 PM

Domenici just switched. I think we won.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:43 PM

Chambliss and Isakson both voted NO

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 8:43 PM

Are we looking for Yeas or Nays?

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 8:35 PM

If 60 Yeas are reached then then debate is limited.

If they do not get 60 yea votes then Reid is saying he will pull the bill.

I am hoping they do not get the 60 (but not sure what the count is).

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:44 PM

Why doesn’t CSPAN put the totals up
Specter “Aye”
Kyl “Nay”

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 8:45 PM

Dudley Smith on June 7, 2007 at 8:41 PM

I may be wrong but I think Collins (RINO-ME) may have switched her vote from this morning.

This is one of the rare occasions where I have felt like the elected collective inside the Beltway may have actually listened to the will of the American people. It is still hard to fathom why they put up a harder fight against their constituents then they did the illegals.
Once the dust settles it will be time for one of those “Follow the money” investigations.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 8:54 PM

I saw that over on Michelles’ site so I don’t guess it is time to relax. Just like the earmarks that continue unabated with no disclosure they may try to slip a substitute bill past.

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 8:56 PM

Someone at Ace of Spades asked if the sargeant-at-arms could just gun down the Senate.

It fails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It don’t need ammendents Harry and their ain’t support outside either.

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:02 PM

I think he said he’s going to keep it open for the next several weeks. Reid thinks there’s a lot of support for this bill on the outside.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 9:02 PM

Cry me a river Wahhhhhhhhh

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:03 PM

Meaningless, irrelevant arguments adduced by Reid.

thirteen28 on June 7, 2007 at 7:59 PM

Don’t feel sorry for them. Any of his constituents that are still defending him deserve to have him. I feel sorry for all the sensible, intelligent Mississippians (is that a word?) who keep hoping against hope that he will shut up.

Anyway, like Editor said, dissolving Congress and waiting for the next election is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a good while.

Wolfman on June 7, 2007 at 9:05 PM

He ain’t pulling it. Sounds like they plan to wait us out and then pass it when passions aren’t so high.

McConnell R-KY trying to be Reid’s wingman.

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:10 PM

Not over true…

However any delay is a good thing IMO.

F15Mech on June 7, 2007 at 9:10 PM

By the way, does anyone remember that time on the Simpsons (back when it was funny) where they go to D.C. and Lisa meets a bill sitting on the steps of the Capitol? They made fun of Schoolhouse Rock for a little bit before a (if I remember right) Secret Service agent came out and said that the bill had been defeated and then set it on fire with a flamethrower.

Yeah, I’m wishing that would happen here.

Wolfman on June 7, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Here comes the ‘courageous Republicans’ tripe again.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 9:12 PM

Can a stray meteor please hit the Senate?

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 9:12 PM

The way to make people happy Mr. Reid is secure the border first!!!!

No guest worker programs etc.

Secure the border then we can discuss all of the illegals here.

F15Mech on June 7, 2007 at 9:13 PM

Reid has yet to acknowledge that anybody’s constituents getting active and contacting their senators had anything to do with how the votes went. Listening to him we don’t exist. Only those 100 members inside that building matter. shithead!

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:13 PM

Lott is absolutely correct except for one thing, his speech should apply to enforcing laws in effect not legislating new ones.

In that context you are all females mice. No Balls!

Wade on June 7, 2007 at 9:14 PM

Harry
WhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHabi

400lb Gorilla on June 7, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Reid refuses to acknowledge that any of the folks who contacted their senators had anything to do with the way the vote. All that matters to him is the 100 people in that chamber.
That’s right Harry we don’t count, so who are you working for?

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:15 PM

“Are we going to slither away from this issue and wait for some epivity to happen?”

The Putz woudn’t know an “epivity” if it bonked him on the head… lol

greggish on June 7, 2007 at 9:16 PM

‘7 courageous Republicans.’ Republican courage is an oxymoron.

PRCalDude on June 7, 2007 at 9:19 PM

Reid acknowledges 7 Republicans who “did the right thing”. Let’s get names

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:19 PM

Hey Teddy a bank robber is motivated by the same things, to provide for their family, but just like the illegal alien they have committed a crimminal act in so doing.

LakeRuins on June 7, 2007 at 9:23 PM

I can’t even watch it. Sickening. And I watch the dam Rosie videos. Lot’s of folks showing their true colors lately. And we should wonder why they got so little done in the last 12 years?

Griz on June 7, 2007 at 9:25 PM

Wonder if Lott will ask Kennedy for a lift home?

Wade on June 7, 2007 at 9:36 PM

Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment

Wade on June 7, 2007 at 9:37 PM

This dickeater goes on to vote no. I have to assume that the liberal Republicans who voted no are reserving the option to rear-end us with the bill later…

Jaibones on June 7, 2007 at 9:46 PM

I hope someone points out to “Dirty Dianna” that she had 21 years to fix this problem.

F15Mech on June 7, 2007 at 9:54 PM

You conveniently left out the part of his speech where he explained why they should NOT vote for cloture. Lott does make sense here, though. At some point, you have to man up and vote for or against the bill. That’s the way things get done in the US Senate. After reading the bill, I happen to believe that this bill could have been tweaked to be a decent compromise for both parties.

freakagriep on June 7, 2007 at 10:05 PM

Why cant they show that same “Courage” and BUILD THE WALL they promised us?

From what I’ve read, the (vast) majority of the the American people don’t want this bill.
Is this a democratic republic, or a plutocracy???
Vive la revolucion!

Each day, each sound bite…it keeps getting worse.

Coyote D. on June 8, 2007 at 2:44 AM

Need we all remember that Trent Lott only became a Republican because his constituency changed? He USED to be a Democrat. And, we can see so often, he NEVER really changed from that original leaning.

Lott is now and always HAS been a disaster as a “Republican”.

Warner Todd Huston on June 8, 2007 at 3:01 AM

Geraldo Rivera on Fox news right now, laments the death of the bill and actually said, “I could never be a politician… to be so opportunistic, so shortsighted… people being terrorized by the law… save your emails… I’m no longer interested in reading them… your emotions have gone beyond your patriotism and your reason.”

Good grief. I would dearly love to have that video of Rivera saying he could never be so opportunistic. A mental chasm that wide really ought to be charted.
