A drunken driver not a threat??? I really must disagree with that.

I’m amazed that she was convicted and the punishment was almost carried out!

It seems no one in this country must obey our laws except us naive middle-class, tax-paying, law abiding citizens!!! If you’re at either end of the spectrum, ie, an illegal alien, or hugely rich and famous, well then, you’ve got it made in America.

I’m sure there are a few hundred thousand dead drunk driver victims (not to mention their families) who would disagree with you on this.

By driving drunk multiple times she is a danger to everyone else on the street. If it was regular joe-blow who did this they would be in GenPop of jail for the full term.

How “the Boss” sees it as uncool to ridicule, chastise and mock her is beyond me. It is apparently the only thing we can do that will have any kind of effect.

That’s great in a perfect world, but like I said, until we have more prisons, then an ankle bracelet will have to do.
The system is not working anyway, because they just can’t carry out the punishment end of it even if they wanted to.

People are let out early for violent crimes because of overcrowding as it is now.

How many times do you think the average man gets to violate his parole and get caught drinking and driving on a suspended license before he gets thrown in the slammer.

It happens all the time, sadly, and much worse than this. It’s the luck of the draw, or the judge… unless you’re not a citizen, then you’re safe all the time.

I think this case just got so much publicity, that the judge wanted to make a statement. Sending her to jail serves no purpose other than making people feel good about themselves because a rich person has to go to prison.

I think she got jail time because this was the second or third time she violated her parole.

The fact that the public has an opinion one way or the other doesn’t matter. I don’t care if everyone feels smug because a Hilton heiress finally got sent to the slammer. I see it as a multiple-offender/parole violator going to jail.

I find it ridiculous that she got let out early for a rash (if that’s the medical condition). There are people in prison that get real illnesses and real injuries and they are stuck their because that’s part of being in prison. They receive treatment, but that’s it.

The exact same thing happened a few month ago with the actress Michelle Rodriguez. Instead of paying the fine and doing the community service when she got caught drinking and driving, she opted for the 30 day jail sentence. She spent less than 48 hours in jail before they paroled her.

I suppose; that is, if you don’t think drunk driving and driving with the lights off at night is a threat to others. Families of those who have died at the hands of drunk drivers might disagree, however. /sarc

I disagree–it’s about the law being the law, no matter who’s involved. My feelings about myself aren’t affected at all if a famous person goes to jail, or doesn’t. But a lot of impressionable (read: “stupid”) young people look up to famous people like Paris Hilton and want to be like her. They need to see that no-one is above the law.

wrong wrong wrong……..jail is about punishment. Individual punishment. What punishment is home confinement?
Rich or poor? Punishment has to be part of the process or the system is worthless.

So punishment is no longer an issue then. It is all about protecting the public?

Until we build more jails, then yes, I think it is. Or until we find a way to cram more people into a jail and not give them taxpayer funded “luxuries”. There are other ways to punish people. House arrest is cushy, yes, but it doesn’t cost the state as much, and I suppose the public is technically protected.

It was stupid to put in jail in the first place. This just compounds the stupidity. Jail should be reserved for people who really need to be there. Paris was there because of her celeb status not because she was a threat to anyone.

Really? I know someone who was speeding in the middle of the night doing 99 mph, and is facing a real possibility of jail time. She is looking at 2 weeks. She wasn’t a threat to anyone but herself, because it was a divided highway.
