CNN anchors snarking…at CNN

TV Newser had the first line on it today:

CNN anchor Heidi Collins couldn’t hide her disdain for this morning’s news of Paris Hilton’s release from jail. Co-anchor Tony Harris could be heard laughing in the background.

Entertainment correspondent Brooke Anderson bore the brunt of the jokes (and did so quite well). Here are some examples of Collins’ questions:

COLLINS, sarcastically: Certainly medical considerations apparently played a part in her release, certainly not preferential treatment!–

ANDERSON: Uh…

Then:

COLLINS: Has this ever happened for any other individual in the entire history of the world?

ANDERSON: It has happened with celebrities…

And the snark continues. In this clip, anchor Heidi Collins even twists CNN’s own brand motto:

Every defense attorney in L.A. is getting a psych eval for their clients in the slammer to show they are depressed and not eating. Tax dollars need to be spent someplace so why not give it to the lawyers.

Fox News reports that the medical reason she was released from jail was a rash.

If Paris went on a hunger strike could we tell the difference ?

William Amos on June 7, 2007 at 1:59 PM

Alright now . . . get back to that jail and find everybody that’s cried, is or has been depressed, and has or had a rash and let them out. This entire episode is a sick charade and miscarriage of justice. On the other hand, what do you expect in L.A.?

rplat on June 7, 2007 at 2:03 PM

Running bet she violates the home confinement order. Some paparazzi is about to get a golden parachute.

Not a bet, a pool.

I’m down for the 10th of June.

Sadn Diego’s Fox 6 was saying, “Ok, They’re forcing me to report this…”

Mazztek on June 7, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Celebrity effin justice! She invoked the laws of the elite.

voiceofreason on June 7, 2007 at 2:16 PM

Did anyone expect her to be in their even a week?

Sad thing is, this probably did traumatize her.

unamused on June 7, 2007 at 2:18 PM

I guess the Jailers didn’t want an epidemic of herpes to be spread to the jailed population. I guess there is no liability for LA County if Paris passes herpes to the general public, just liability if spread to jailed folks.

Tim Burton on June 7, 2007 at 2:19 PM

How is L.A. NOT supposed to riot over this?
This is the first time in my life I’d be in favor of an L.A. riot.

And I hope the police stand down too.

unamused on June 7, 2007 at 2:19 PM

Texas Dan…I want 9 June some time before midnight !

It was a rash….

So where does World News Tonight play it this evening? Before or after the Amnesty bill fiasco, G-8, NKs missle test, and the daily ‘the war is lost’ story?

Limerick on June 7, 2007 at 2:25 PM

Okay, I didn’t care even the tiniest little bit about all this Paris Hilton crap until now. But this is just wrong! I can’t believe they let her out. I understand CNN’s snarkiness. I feel a little snarky about it myself.

aero on June 7, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Ok, T-Dan, I want in, too. I’m saying tomorrow afternoon between 3-4pm (PST). She’ll need a little retail therapy on Rodeo Dr.

KelliD on June 7, 2007 at 2:42 PM

But this is just wrong!

Oh, I don’t know. They made an example out of her because she’s famous, so she’s making monkeys out of them because she’s famous. She blew a great opportunity to re-invent herself though. She could have come out of there after 23 days all pale and wan, and then written a book about her experiences, and then become an advocate for women in prison, and then adopted 8 children of women in prison. . .
On second thought, I’m glad she’s out. She’s bad enough the way she is.

smellthecoffee on June 7, 2007 at 2:46 PM

HAHA!! Acts have consequences. We are society they will inflict our own punishment inspite of what the legal system does. The same type of cultural blacklist that Jerry Lee Lewis was put on is stil around.

Exit question: Isn’t she playing this wrong?

Doing her time like a average citizen would give her enormous street cred and make her an even more revered faux-celebrity. She wasted the opportunity…

Theworldisnotenough on June 7, 2007 at 2:48 PM

Yea, she could claim to be an “OG” and start showing up on BET. She could also make a crappy rap record and actually sell a few albums, heck she’d save on the requirement of hiring nappy headed scruffy hos for her music videos by starring her self in them.

Tim Burton on June 7, 2007 at 2:54 PM

One chipped tooth and the warden caved.

Dusty on June 7, 2007 at 2:56 PM

It was stupid to put in jail in the first place. This just compounds the stupidity. Jail should be reserved for people who really need to be there. Paris was there because of her celeb status not because she was a threat to anyone.

duff65 on June 7, 2007 at 2:57 PM

not because she was a threat to anyone.

duff65 on June 7, 2007 at 2:57 PM

So punishment is no longer an issue then. It is all about protecting the public?

Limerick on June 7, 2007 at 3:01 PM

duff65 on June 7, 2007 at 2:57 PM

Really? I know someone who was speeding in the middle of the night doing 99 mph, and is facing a real possibility of jail time. She is looking at 2 weeks. She wasn’t a threat to anyone but herself, because it was a divided highway.

Don’t be silly, all that unimportant stuff can wait!!!!

ScottG on June 7, 2007 at 3:19 PM

Until we build more jails, then yes, I think it is. Or until we find a way to cram more people into a jail and not give them taxpayer funded “luxuries”. There are other ways to punish people. House arrest is cushy, yes, but it doesn’t cost the state as much, and I suppose the public is technically protected.

I think this case just got so much publicity, that the judge wanted to make a statement. Sending her to jail serves no purpose other than making people feel good about themselves because a rich person has to go to prison.

reaganaut on June 7, 2007 at 3:20 PM

reaganaut on June 7, 2007 at 3:20 PM

wrong wrong wrong……..jail is about punishment. Individual punishment. What punishment is home confinement?
Rich or poor? Punishment has to be part of the process or the system is worthless.

Limerick on June 7, 2007 at 3:29 PM

reaganaut on June 7, 2007 at 3:20 PM

I disagree–it’s about the law being the law, no matter who’s involved. My feelings about myself aren’t affected at all if a famous person goes to jail, or doesn’t. But a lot of impressionable (read: “stupid”) young people look up to famous people like Paris Hilton and want to be like her. They need to see that no-one is above the law.

aero on June 7, 2007 at 3:31 PM

Paris was there because of her celeb status not because she was a threat to anyone.

I suppose; that is, if you don’t think drunk driving and driving with the lights off at night is a threat to others. Families of those who have died at the hands of drunk drivers might disagree, however. /sarc

baldilocks on June 7, 2007 at 3:36 PM

reaganaut on June 7, 2007 at 3:20 PM

I think she got jail time because this was the second or third time she violated her parole.

How many times do you think the average man gets to violate his parole and get caught drinking and driving on a suspended license before he gets thrown in the slammer.

The fact that the public has an opinion one way or the other doesn’t matter. I don’t care if everyone feels smug because a Hilton heiress finally got sent to the slammer. I see it as a multiple-offender/parole violator going to jail.

I find it ridiculous that she got let out early for a rash (if that’s the medical condition). There are people in prison that get real illnesses and real injuries and they are stuck their because that’s part of being in prison. They receive treatment, but that’s it.

The exact same thing happened a few month ago with the actress Michelle Rodriguez. Instead of paying the fine and doing the community service when she got caught drinking and driving, she opted for the 30 day jail sentence. She spent less than 48 hours in jail before they paroled her.

JadeNYU on June 7, 2007 at 3:39 PM

It happens all the time, sadly, and much worse than this. It’s the luck of the draw, or the judge… unless you’re not a citizen, then you’re safe all the time.

reaganaut on June 7, 2007 at 3:46 PM

Once again I am made to despise our legal system. I’m sure she learned her lesson after 3 days of hard time.

That’s great in a perfect world, but like I said, until we have more prisons, then an ankle bracelet will have to do.
The system is not working anyway, because they just can’t carry out the punishment end of it even if they wanted to.

People are let out early for violent crimes because of overcrowding as it is now.

reaganaut on June 7, 2007 at 3:54 PM

I’m going to write the govenator and ask him to request the air force accidentally drop a JDAM on her Bentley.

How “the Boss” sees it as uncool to ridicule, chastise and mock her is beyond me. It is apparently the only thing we can do that will have any kind of effect.

liquidflorian on June 7, 2007 at 4:01 PM

as long as the ankle bracelet has a taser feature that will incapacitate her the split second she tries to get in her pool or leave the premises, i’m fine with it.

duff65 on June 7, 2007 at 2:57 PM

I’m sure there are a few hundred thousand dead drunk driver victims (not to mention their families) who would disagree with you on this.

By driving drunk multiple times she is a danger to everyone else on the street. If it was regular joe-blow who did this they would be in GenPop of jail for the full term.

CrazyFool on June 7, 2007 at 4:24 PM

duff65 on June 7, 2007 at 2:57 PM

A drunken driver not a threat??? I really must disagree with that.

I’m amazed that she was convicted and the punishment was almost carried out!

It seems no one in this country must obey our laws except us naive middle-class, tax-paying, law abiding citizens!!! If you’re at either end of the spectrum, ie, an illegal alien, or hugely rich and famous, well then, you’ve got it made in America.

4shoes on June 7, 2007 at 4:33 PM

Like this wasn’t planned from the beginning. Pathetic.

frreal on June 7, 2007 at 5:01 PM

One of these days one of these drunken Hollywood skanks is going to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and kill somebody. You just wait and see. And what then? Will the Sheriff who has given Paris a free ride this time be able to live with himself knowing that by letting her go early he may have indirectly contributed to her not “learning her lesson”.
