I think you are right. He takes a look back and sees 7 or 8 guys getting control of the situation, and returns to his post. Who knows — the “mad foreigner” might have been a distraction to get all of the agents to the back of the jeep, leaving an opening for something more serious.

Steve LLamabutcher -actually the puffy shirted guys aren’t doing the smack-down. It’s teh secret service looking guys that are stepping on this guy to make him let go of the jeep. If you look close he hits the ground pretty hard after they jump on him. Our secret service guys would probably do the same. WE don’t see what happens after the camera quits. It was getting to be a nice little pile-on.

I was surprised at how easy they were on the guy. He got over the barrier with one leap and got within arms length of the vehicle. When I watch US authorities handle this kind of stuff, they don’t mess around. Body slams seem to be the tactic of choice.

In all seriousness, though, why would he pick a spot to jump on the Pope, where he would have to jump in front and over that one security guard. The guard had him before the guy even was fully on the wall.

I can understand everyone’s concern, but the Pope was never remotely in danger…was he even aware of what was happening behind him? Leave the guy in the open air, rather than that Pope-mobile with the glass.

Perhaps the Republicans or Bush are planning something evil today, and this was used as a distraction.
