Video: Pope almost gets jumped

posted at 8:26 am on June 6, 2007 by Allahpundit

Few details yet, but everyone’s okay. This made me laugh for some reason:

The Vatican-watching news agency I-Media said Swiss Guards immediately arrested the man, who was wearing a pink T-shirt, black shorts and a green baseball cap, calling him “mad” and probably a foreigner.

You know how mad those foreigners are. Exit question: Given that the Vatican is a sovereign country, does this mean the guy’s headed for Basilica lock-up instead of an Italian jail? (Exit answer: no.)

Shouldn’t that say Swiss Guards, foreigners wearing orange, red, yellow, and black vertically-striped pantaloons and puffy ruffled shirts and 15th century metal bucketheads, immediately arrested…

“PINK T-SHIRT” as in Code Pink T-Shirt! hummmmm

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 6, 2007 at 8:44 AM

It would be great if the Pope knew judo or jeet kun do and kicked the crap out of that guy.

benrand on June 6, 2007 at 9:00 AM

Well the guy should have been arrested by the fashion police first. And what happened to the “Pope Mobile”? Kidding aside, I’m glad the Pope is OK.

vcferlita on June 6, 2007 at 9:02 AM

Wait a minute…was it a man or a woman? Maybe MIDGE POTTS?

Brat on June 6, 2007 at 9:02 AM

I can understand everyone’s concern, but the Pope was never remotely in danger…was he even aware of what was happening behind him? Leave the guy in the open air, rather than that Pope-mobile with the glass.

Perhaps the Republicans or Bush are planning something evil today, and this was used as a distraction.

who was wearing a pink T-shirt, black shorts and a green baseball cap, calling him “mad” and probably a foreigner.

Let me rephrase that.

who was wearing a pink T-shirt, black shorts and a green baseball cap, calling him “mad” and say they’re praying he’s a foreigner.

Better.

In all seriousness, though, why would he pick a spot to jump on the Pope, where he would have to jump in front and over that one security guard. The guard had him before the guy even was fully on the wall.

amerpundit on June 6, 2007 at 9:09 AM

I was surprised at how easy they were on the guy. He got over the barrier with one leap and got within arms length of the vehicle. When I watch US authorities handle this kind of stuff, they don’t mess around. Body slams seem to be the tactic of choice.

If he would have pulled out a .45 cal pistol a put a cap in his a$$, I’d convert to Catholicism tomorrow. :-)

amerpundit on June 6, 2007 at 9:09 AM

Yeah, that was stupid. It was like he was leaping into the guards arms.

Daddy! I found you! heh heh heh

Hitchens finally went off the deep end!

sonnyspats1 on June 6, 2007 at 9:48 AM

Steve LLamabutcher -actually the puffy shirted guys aren’t doing the smack-down. It’s teh secret service looking guys that are stepping on this guy to make him let go of the jeep. If you look close he hits the ground pretty hard after they jump on him. Our secret service guys would probably do the same. WE don’t see what happens after the camera quits. It was getting to be a nice little pile-on.

You know how mad those foreigners are.

Of Middle Eastern descent, perhaps?

Brat on June 6, 2007 at 10:04 AM

Nah, he looks like your average Albanian.

Jaibones on June 6, 2007 at 10:11 AM

Or maybe some guy from Pittsburgh…

Jaibones on June 6, 2007 at 10:11 AM

This guy doesn’t know his chess…it’s the Bishops that get jumped.

James on June 6, 2007 at 10:20 AM

I’m not Catholic, but I’m glad Benedict’s okay. So how many threads do you think there are at HuffPoo and Dumbass Underground right now, wishing that the idiot got through security and killed the Pope?

ReubenJCogburn on June 6, 2007 at 10:29 AM

Did anybody else recognize the security guard in the dark hair who actually shies away and moves away from the situation? What the -?!?

If you didn’t catch this, watch the video again.

DPierre on June 6, 2007 at 10:31 AM

A new sport has been created – Pope vaulting.

DPierre on June 6, 2007 at 10:31 AM

If your talking about the guy on the front right of the Jeep he is just keeping his post the other two guys on that side quickly returned to station too.

Gwillie on June 6, 2007 at 11:11 AM

Or maybe some guy from Pittsburgh…

Jaibones on June 6, 2007 at 10:11 AM

Newton Crosby: Where are you from, anyway?
Ben Jabituya: Bakersfield, originally.
Newton Crosby: No, I mean your ancestors.
Ben Jabituya: Oh, them. Pittsburgh.

I think you are right. He takes a look back and sees 7 or 8 guys getting control of the situation, and returns to his post. Who knows — the “mad foreigner” might have been a distraction to get all of the agents to the back of the jeep, leaving an opening for something more serious.

Nah, he looks like your average Albanian.

Jaibones on June 6, 2007 at 10:11 AM

Maybe a follower of the “religion of peace” then?

Brat on June 6, 2007 at 12:48 PM

How long before the “Finda da Pope in da Pizza” jokes?

Maybe a follower of the “religion of peace” then?

In that outfit? Don’t they wear caps, without the lids?

I’ll think they’ll have to raise the threat level to pink. Let’s find out more about this guy shall we.
