Video: Olby sneers at the JFK terror plot, questions the timing of everything

posted at 9:29 am on June 5, 2007 by Allahpundit

And to think, some people believe the left doesn’t take terrorism seriously.

You’ll note, I hope, that even Olby recognizes how dishonest he’s being. That’s why he feels obliged to mention not once but twice that coincidences do happen and, in his words, “we could probably construct a similar timeline of terror events and their relationship to the haircuts of popular politicians.” Why do it, then? Because, as the Truthers are wont to say, he’s “just asking questions.” Just “airing it,” Sullivan style. Make up your own mind.

What he doesn’t note is that 9 of the 13 terror alerts he cites were issued prior to Katrina’s assault on New Orleans, widely accepted as the beginning of the steep decline of the Bush presidency. It stands to reason that if terror warnings were deliberately timed to “distract,” we’d find them congregated around the administration’s true crisis moments. Instead, Olby’s forced to link the JFK plot to the U.S. Attorneys scandal, which had long since reached critical mass. Where were the terror alerts during the battle over Iraq funding? When Bush first announced the surge? After the Hamdan decision? Even by his own absurd non-logic, it makes more sense to claim that the JFK plot was timed to distract from the amnesty uproar. But Olby can’t claim that because Bush is on the left’s side on that one, so he’s forced to feebly tie it back to Gonzalesgate and the Democratic debate.

He also doesn’t seem to grasp that just because the pipeline plot wasn’t feasible doesn’t mean no attack would have occurred. You’ve got a group of men with homicidal intent willing to travel internationally to bring off their plan. If they’re game for that, they’re probably game for walking into a crowd of people and opening up with automatic weapons and grenades. It won’t take out an airport, but you might very well top the body count from the London bombings two years ago.

Newsbusters has the full transcript; the clip here is just a mishmash of lowlights, although I did include both times he went out of his way to note that one of the officials who announced the JFK plot was the father of a Fox News reporter. That official: Ray Kelly … commissioner of the NYPD. What would he be doing at a presser related to a major terror bust in New York City? We’ll have to wonder, I guess. Finally, pay attention to how Olby treats the biggest bust in his roundup, the UK airline plot from last year. Once again we’re treated to the dark nutroots insinuation that somehow it was sparked by Ned Lamont’s primary victory over Lieberman. If Olby’s genuinely curious as to why U.S. counterterrorist agents wanted to move faster than the Brits did, he need only look to his own network for answers:

Another U.S. official, however, acknowledges there was disagreement over timing. Analysts say that in recent years, American security officials have become edgier than the British in such cases because of missed opportunities leading up to 9/11.

Which is another way of saying that if they didn’t move quickly enough and the plot came off, people like Keith Olbermann would be on TV accusing them of having deliberately let it happen. That’s Murrow journalism, baby. Trutherism, the whole Trutherism, and nothing but the Trutherism.

Update: Just curious. Does the left even have a workable theory as to how, precisely, terror alerts “distract” the public? Has anyone forgotten about the amnesty bill or the Democratic debate since the JFK story broke? A truly enormous terror plot could be such a big story that it would push everything else off the front page for days, but this clearly wasn’t on that scale. (Not to mention the fact that it was announced on a Saturday.) So where does the distraction enter in?

At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before Olbermann starts talking about controlled demolitions and guided missiles.

Come on, Keith! Let your inner Truther run free!

I just cannot bring myself to watch him. Can’t do it.

StephC on June 5, 2007 at 9:44 AM

Who the hell is Olbermann ? More importantly; who the hell cares?

How many people watch your television show? Sorroce footing the bill?

oldelpasoan on June 5, 2007 at 9:46 AM

At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before Olbermann starts talking about controlled demolitions and guided missiles.

Why doesn’t he link guided missiles and Flight 800? Oh, wrong president.

Oby had so much promise in the beginning. For the first few weeks his show was hilarious. I’ll never forget the story about those crazy Asian fish that have invaded the US and jump into boats as they speed along. It didn’t take too long for him to go off the reservation however and destroy any potential the show had. Now, he’s just one of the faces of the lunatic left.

TheBigOldDog on June 5, 2007 at 9:49 AM

Incredible. I’m not sure I can comment on this type of thing in the future, because I’ll just be repeating myself.

Hard to believe this is an American on an American TV station spouting such nonsense.

Which is why since 9/11, I’ve said that if the US goes under one day, it’s not going to be from external forces…it’s going to be internally, with people like Olby.

And as others have noted on previous boards, God forbid there is a terrorist attack, and then people like Olby will ccriticize the Bush administration for not being prepared, and not taking threats seriously.

asc85 on June 5, 2007 at 9:49 AM

For such a big guy he stands 5 foot on reasoning alone. In short, ahem, a total wimp invested in defeat.

Yes, Olby. Face it, you ARE a wimp. You must’ve been picked on while you were a kid.

Kokonut on June 5, 2007 at 9:51 AM

Olberdope speaks to insane people. They understand him. He, and his ilk, are the types who complain that the authorities are being to cautious, yet would hold them to task if they weren’t cautious enough.

csdeven on June 5, 2007 at 9:51 AM

– and they protest that we question their patriotism. I don’t question their patriotism. I question their sanity.

This guy is nothing but Rosie in pants. Just another liberal minded fool.

NRA4Freedom on June 5, 2007 at 9:59 AM

Jeez, when Olby’s wife does something around the house, like does the dishes, I wonder if he then “questions the timing” of it, because obviously the dished didn’t need to be done at that exact moment, therefore, she’s up to something.

How did that *&#@ing idiot ever get on television? Oh wait, it’s television, duh.

Metro on June 5, 2007 at 10:02 AM

So true story… my girlfriend (who is very much not political) happens to see the local paper with the JFK plot on the front page. “What is this?” she asks since the NY Times and US magazine dont cover such things. She reads it and is very upset about it.

Goes to work and has a meeting with a guy who’s next meeting is with.. James Woolsey, former head of the CIA. This guy hasnt heard of it either (not Mr Woolsey, obviously he knows, the partner of the firm she works at though did not). And we’re in the NY NJ area.

So if this is ‘timed to distract’ it’s not doing a very good job, since days after it’s apparently news to every non political junkie I know.

Dash on June 5, 2007 at 10:06 AM

Didja ever notice how Dems use scandals and investigations to associate events with for reference while the Repubs use great milestones in achievement like man walking on the moon, the fall of the Iron Curtain, and Reagan winning the Presidency?

Guess they just use a different part of their brain?

LakeRuins on June 5, 2007 at 10:06 AM

Someone give (d)olby a sock and set him free

Ya know, I actually was watching this last night and I kept thinking to myself, “Which one of the nutroots groups is claiming THIS obsurd theory”.

Well, the more that I watched it, the more that I kept thinking, “Oh no…You have GOT to be kidding me. Is he really being serious? He is not…”.

I think I finally lost it when I heard “The so-called plot happened right before the 2nd Democratic debate“. Question…Why would President Bush try and distract the American people from something that they weren’t even watching?

The straw the broke the camel’s back was the “Police Chief of NYC, the father of a correspondent for Fox News channel.”

HarryStar on June 5, 2007 at 10:16 AM

So where does the distraction enter in?

Doesn’t matter. All the nutroots have to do is to keep “just asking questions” over and over again to get their less informed masses to start seeing conspiracies.

flipflop on June 5, 2007 at 10:22 AM

These people insult all of us…they don’t care that there are thousands of people that have lost loved ones in terrorist attacks…we saw how tough Rosie is’nt…this jerk would be peeing all over himself and on his knees begging if he were on a hijacked plane…he needs to be forced off the air…

Well, and minus a couple hundred pounds.

WisCon on June 5, 2007 at 10:25 AM

These idiots will believe anything if it disses the current administration. Anything!

Bush’s footprints and fingerprints were found in the molten steel at the base of the twin towers…really? I knew he was involved. Now prove that those footprints and fingerprints aren’t there…what? the steel was shipped to China to hide the evidence? And China just signed an agreement for the largest oil purchase in world history with the Arab countries…I knew he was involved. Just when the “real” story is about to break, the JFK plot…I knew he was involved.

They look at each other in wonder, how brilliant they think of each other. All of these sub plots that the rest of us just can’t see…if only we had the vision, the burning in our hearts, if only we also held the secret. But alas, we are conservative, we know nothing, we do not open our minds to these wonderous thoughts, these great conspiracies (sp), these remarkable, insightful, academic revelations. We are but the mindless souls, wandering through the wilderness of logic.

If there’s a more smug person on the planet, I’d like to know.

If Olberman and the Left were capable of shame, this would induce shirt rending fits of contrition.

The one and only time I ever watched him, I thought it was a parody. It took me 10 minutes to come to the conclusion he was serious. The lack of a laugh track was eerie.

pat on June 5, 2007 at 12:34 PM

Olby’s given me a flash of inspiration: I now know who was really responsible for 9/11!

Amazingly, it wasn’t George Bush, but Gary Condit. Remember him? According to OlbyLogic, Condit needed a spectacular way to “distract” media bloodhounds like Greta Van Susteren from inextricably linking him to the disappearance of Chandra Levy.

It worked, too. Ever hear anything more about Condit after 9/11? Q.E.D.

This “trutherism” thing can be kinda fun, once you start getting the hang of it.

Spurius Ligustinus on June 5, 2007 at 12:44 PM

Olberdouche–and the rest of the moonbats–in a nutshell.

KO, Can’t we at least give them credit for trying to kill us? Oh wait, we can’t because that would prove that we are at war against those who seek to kill us, and would take away from your “Move along folks nothing to see here” mentality.

Rosie probably has better luck with the ladies… or at least doesn’t need to spill the merlot.

Kini on June 5, 2007 at 1:32 PM

boy, he shore is purdy with all that make up. Hoo-whee!
what a clown! but hey, why can’t the JFK-terror plot be a distraction from, say, the news that the economy is doing well? or that there is evidence of global warming on Mars and Neptune? or that the Dem’s plan for universal health care is rubbish?
What’s good for the goose….

stevezilla on June 5, 2007 at 2:49 PM

I have come to the conclusion that there IS a bigger ego than OReilly’s on the air. It’s al-JaKeitha. He’s a cross between Broadcast News’ Tom Grunick (Wm. Hurt) and Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy (Will Farrell) with a little John Belushi exploding newscaster from SNL thrown in, minus the IQ that made their parodies so brilliant (even Farrell’s, who is NOT funny). He is a self-parody and hasn’t got a clue. He really does take himself seriously now. That could ONLY occur if his ego completely overwhelmed his ability to peer into the real world.

mikelikesit on June 5, 2007 at 3:08 PM

Well I’ve resisted till now but here goes. As far as the Fort Dix six there seems to be a thought process on the left (not just this bag) that somehow pizza guys couldn’t hurt a base full of service people. Implying that everyone is equipped like they see in videos from Iraq. But the problem is that on a domestic base the only personnel that are armed are the MP’s (army) no one else carries weapons. Therefore once inside the gates it would be a turkey shoot. So I guess that from this POS display of knowledge it must not be only the repub. kids that don’t serve but every lefty from BC to OlbyD. You don’t wont to get stuck in Iraq now do you? Stay in school run off to England, Canada the moon bat, wherever. jeeesh
