Video: McCain says reform or riots Updated

He’s comparing the situation in the US to the situation in France, where unassimilated Muslim “youths” rioted in 2005 and 2006. There as here, politicians looking the other way while illegals flooded in were catalysts to the problem, but the similarities largely end there.
Or not. In Europe, the generous welfare state acted as a magnet to pull in immigrants, legal and illegal, from all over North Africa, the Middle East and western Asia. Multiculturalism forced defenses down there and is being used to mau mau opponents of unbridled illegal immigration here. Jobs have been more of a magnetic pull for illegal immigrants coming here, but the welfare state plays a role here too, there’s no denying that. Sanctuary cities flouting federal immigration law play a major role in attracting and keeping illegal immigrants here. I don’t think that France has a similar problem with cities just flatly refusing to go along with national law.
There’s also the religious difference: France is nominally Catholic but mostly atheist; its unassimilated immigrants are largely Muslim and susceptible to jihad radicalization. The mostly Mexican illegals coming here are presumably Catholic. They might be susceptible to some kind of racial identity politics or reconquista fervor, but it won’t be of the same character as radical Islam.
So with all of that in mind, here’s McCain arguing that it’s either adopt the reform that’s on the table now or we might see no-go zones in US cities and riots in the suburbs of Washington DC. It’s a very mob-like pitch, given the federal government’s own role in fostering and abetting illegal immigration.
Oh, I almost forgot. There is one other major difference between immigration law enforcement in France and the US: In France, the president is cracking down on the problem. And he seems to mean what he says.
(h/t Edgar)
Update (AP): Here’s a snippet from St. John’s immigration speech yesterday. This passage came four or five paragraphs after he said of his anti-amnesty opponents, “I do not question the sincerity of their convictions or their purpose in proposing other ways to address the problem.” Emphasis mine:
I would hope that any candidate for President would not suggest doing nothing. And I would hope they wouldn’t play politics for their own interests if the cost of their ambition was to make this problem even harder to solve. To want the office so badly that you would intentionally make our country’s problems worse might prove you can read a poll or take a cheap shot, but it hardly demonstrates presidential leadership.
Update (bp): Well, it looks like we’ll get riots anyway. According to the CBO, the immigration compromise will only reduce illegal immigration by 25%.
The bill’s new guest-worker program could lead to at least 500,000 more illegal immigrants within a decade, said the report from the CBO, which said in its official cost estimate that it assumes some future temporary workers will overstay their time in the plan, adding up to a half-million by 2017 and 1 million by 2027.
“We anticipate that many of those would remain in the United States illegally after their visas expire,” CBO said of the guest-worker program, which would allow 200,000 new workers a year to rotate into the country.
And in a blow to President Bush’s timetable, the CBO said the “triggers” — setting up the verification system, deploying 20,000 U.S. Border Patrol agents to duty and constructing hundreds of miles of fencing and vehicle barriers — won’t be met until 2010.
Thanks, Washington!

I see . . . McCain believes we should cave to threats of violence and riots. Well, McCain can go straight to hell . . . I say let it happen.
rplat on June 5, 2007 at 8:57 AM
“In case you hadn’t noticed…”
Yup. Assuming ignorance on the part of your audience is always a political winner. I wonder what McCain’s internal polls are showing right now?
Slublog on June 5, 2007 at 8:58 AM
Lets see, McCain missed very important war votes, and missed some votes on immigration… because he was campaigning…
Yep… he is so interested in the job that what were fairly close votes, which easily could have swung on one of two votes, he didn’t even bother to be there…
Playing politics??? Hmmm…

McLame!
soulsirkus on June 5, 2007 at 9:07 AM
This guy sounds like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton. Try to scare the hell out of people with statements which to me sound like he is inviting the illegals to riot. This as not what someone who wants to lead this country should be saying. Its bad enough when Bush and his cronies call us bigots, anti-immigration haters, etc. without having to hear a has been (actually a never was) spout this kind of tripe.
He is showing a zero in my poll. Of course, I am the only one I polled! This man should just shut up, fold up his tent and quietly go away.

REAL leadership
DwnSouthJukin on June 5, 2007 at 9:11 AM
Amazing that the same people who caused this problem by refusing to enforce our nations immigration laws should now trot out the problem they made to ATTEMPT to force us to support this shoddy bill. McLame even makes riots sound like a threat.
Buzzy on June 5, 2007 at 9:17 AM
At least France deports illegals.
amerpundit on June 5, 2007 at 9:19 AM
Bring it ! The riots won’t last long and that will leave us a lot less of the booger to deport AFTER the riots !
Mas vale tarde que nunca…as Rush would say, ” a little Mexican lingo there” !
DoctorDentons on June 5, 2007 at 9:26 AM
If i were a candidate my position would be, we have to focus on border security first. Once the government can prove to the American people we can stop illegal entrance, then we can have a rational discussion about the best ways to deal with those currently in the country and future immigration.
There will always be large illegal immigration Without strong border security. There will always be people for whom crossing illegally is the best option. People who don’t have the ability or resources to apply legally and/or those who have criminal records or health conditions that would prevent them from entering legally.
TheBigOldDog on June 5, 2007 at 9:32 AM
I can’t decide if McCain and these other amnesty supporters were sold a bill of goods and believe it, or if they are trying to sell us a bill of goods. I understand Bush not caring what we think, but the rest of these guys are going to have to face the voters for as long as they are seeking re-election.

I seem to remember a derogatory name placed on the Italian immigrants of the last century. While being interned, quarantined or processed at Ellis Island any undocumented (no pasport, birth record ect.) Italian was deemed to be WITH OUT PAPERS! therefore a WOP! I can tell you the vast majority of Italians worked hard to abide by the law and loose theWOP!moniker. It is the JOB of the government to document everyone entering the country to reside here. They have failed miserably and I suspect intentionally. What a dingbat McCain is! France has big problems because of their multi culti open door policies in the past. They are whistling a different tune when faced with the reality of being out manned, out voted and out maneuvered by outsiders. We need to enforce the existing laws and get a handle on the situation. That means document everyone entering the country. This administration thinks if you make nice nice with third world people they will reciprocate. They see us as a weak joke and take our money to use against us without ever assimulating. There is a lack of involvment at the steet level by the American people. We don’t want to get too primitive or survival based like our opponents. If we got active we could defeat this assault on the countries sovereignty. Sean Hannity has a bunch of rallies coming up this summer, it might be too late by then. We need to take to the streets it is crunch time.

So does Mexico, but the US is damned if attempt it.
So goes the life of the double standard.
TwinkietheKid on June 5, 2007 at 9:47 AM
Let’s see, what would the Founders of our Nation and American patriots of the past have chosen…
Yea, they would probably have been TOO afraid of “riots” to follow the laws of the land. Right…
But it matters not. We are very quickly entering a time in our Nation’s history where we can no longer go to the polls and vote for someone who shares our resolve, we must instead apparently start going into the voting booth to choose the lesser of two evils. How long will America survive like that…
NRA4Freedom on June 5, 2007 at 9:58 AM
Let’s see…HHHHMMMM….Founding Fathers have an idea about starting this thing called the United States BUT it’s really going to our country’s problems worse.
Yea, leadership!!!! Keep it up, that’s just great! I want leadership, the kind of leadership that DOES what it’s supposed to do, not backdown. Leadership DOES do what’s hardest to do, that’s why they’re called leaders instead of wimps!!!
HarryStar on June 5, 2007 at 10:04 AM
Ah so the people currently breaking the law might break more laws if we don’t allow them amnesty and this idiot is using that as a selling point for his bill?
Benaiah on June 5, 2007 at 10:05 AM
I’m up for rioting myself if this shamnesty bill passes.
If this bill passes and all the predictions of millions more moving in, I don’t think the Washington types will feel very safe in their gated communities when multi-families start moving in.
In less than five years, my communitiy has gone downhill. The crime rate has tripled. You can hardly get gas without being harassed by day laborers, and there are hardly any “English” speaking stores open anymore. The elite will only understand when their communities are effected.
moonsbreath on June 5, 2007 at 10:12 AM
So who says they’re the only ones who can riot? There’s a lot of hostility simmering just under the surface from people who just want our existing laws enforced. Really, how much would it take to boil over into a riot?
Of course, I don’t advocate for anyone to riot…but you’d be a fool (or a politician, evidently) to not be able to see the potential.
James on June 5, 2007 at 10:14 AM
I don’t the think ‘citizenship or else’ is very helpful to his cause here. Those of us who are already quite angry are only going to be vindicated, while those on the fence, perhaps somewhat in favor of ‘doing something’ because of Geraldo and his ‘babies’, might be pushed in the anti-amnesty camp by the violence. I say let them riot; at the very least it could force an stiffer enforcement component.
austinnelly on June 5, 2007 at 10:29 AM
He really does not want to be the nominee.
Thanks for exposing your complete contempt and disdain for the voting public, McVain – and for your soft bigotry of insinuating that Hispanics will cause riots if we don’t surrender to the illegals.
By making so many intemperate remarks, you are showing just how badly unfit you are to be president, and are thus serving your country well once again, as it is clear we should choose someone beside yoursef. Thanks, John.

“GUNS UP!”
georgej on June 5, 2007 at 11:43 AM
I choose riots. In fact, is there any way he can just vote for riots? We’re overdue in LA. I just need to pick up some .45 ACP.
PRCalDude on June 5, 2007 at 12:02 PM
I agree. Nuff said.
heatherrc77 on June 5, 2007 at 12:23 PM
This old fool should just slink off home and have a bowl of bran to clear his mind. In case he hasn’t noticed, he’s sounding more senile by the day.
UnEasyRider on June 5, 2007 at 12:48 PM
Hey guys, is it possible to be a NEGATIVE in that poll…cos I just signed in.
tickleddragon on June 5, 2007 at 12:58 PM
I’ve not seen a candidate that acted LESS like he wants the Nom. Good…cos he ain’t gettin it.
tickleddragon on June 5, 2007 at 1:00 PM
You were like twelve when the last riots happened there. If you and
GeorgeJ go running toward the riots with your guns in hand LA’s finest may not realize you are there to “help”.
Bradky on June 5, 2007 at 1:11 PM
McCain’s “like it or lump it” elitist attitude is appalling.
There are huge differences between our immigration problems and Frances, for that matter Europe. Consider McCain unelectable for the top job, he lacks all sense in common.
Kini on June 5, 2007 at 1:12 PM
Having just watched “Children of Men” this weekend, and have Hollywood give up some great ideas for handling illegals, I say, Bring it! Let them riot, it just makes easier to deport.
Wuptdo on June 5, 2007 at 1:21 PM
Once again with words I never said. When did I say I was going ‘run toward the riots with my guns?’ I’ll tell you what, you do that, and I’ll be right behind you. Heheh.
PRCalDude on June 5, 2007 at 1:27 PM
You spin more than a top on a good day.
Bradky on June 5, 2007 at 1:32 PM
In case you haven’t noticed Senator, the good folks in France that are burning those cars are French CITIZENS, not illegal aliens. For elected officials to be this uninformed, and this smug and condescending in displaying their ignorance, is staggering.
greggish on June 5, 2007 at 1:33 PM
Bradky,
Who’s doing the spinning? Can you tell me when I said I was going to ‘run towards the riots’? When did I say it??????
PRCalDude on June 5, 2007 at 1:35 PM
Read your post again – the gleeful call for riots and arming yourself prior to them pretty much says it all.
“It depends on what the meaning of the word is is”…
Bradky on June 5, 2007 at 1:40 PM
I am proud to say that I will actively campaign against him when he attempts to get re-elected to the Senate because his presidential bid is already history. He’s the only one who doesn’t know it yet.
I’d also like to hear his comments on the torture and mutilation of the soldiers that were captured in Iraq. He was big on making sure that we treat captured terrorists according to the Geneva Convention to insure that they treat our prisoners the same way.
How’s that policy looking now, John?
AZ_Mike on June 5, 2007 at 1:54 PM
So I never said it. Thanks.
PRCalDude on June 5, 2007 at 2:08 PM
Your vote has been counted. Lets see – I now have 2 zeros and 1 minus.
If he doesn’t have the three of us he might as well hang it up.
OBX Pete on June 5, 2007 at 2:12 PM
What you see is a bitter old man. McCain served his country, and for that I’ll extremely grateful, but I seriously doubt he will never be president. When that realization finally sets in, he will no doubt direct that bitterness much like Algore – into lunacy.
jeffNWV on June 5, 2007 at 2:58 PM
We not need new laws, we just need them to enforce the current laws already on the books.
KCtheKat on June 5, 2007 at 4:29 PM
“GeorgeJ go running toward the riots with your guns in hand LA’s finest may not realize you are there to “help”.”
Bradky on June 5, 2007 at 1:11 PM
Before you shoot your mouth off some more, read Guns Up! by Johnnie Clark
Or at least read my comment in the other thread about McCains predicting riots, where I explain the use of the term, and who would be using it.
georgej on June 5, 2007 at 4:49 PM
Not the first time and certainly doubt it is the last that you have expressed violent desires as the solution to things you disagree with.
Like I said – gleefully anticipating riots and hoping you can “participate”.
Bradky on June 5, 2007 at 6:37 PM
Sure are a lot of violent threats from “minorities”, lately, aren’t there?
HerrMorgenholz on June 5, 2007 at 6:50 PM
Not (nearly) the first time you’ve misunderstood/misrepresented/misquoted another commenter in a ridiculous attempt to be clever and critical.
Why don’t you try just commenting on the thread subject instead of doing the lefty troll shuffle.
tickleddragon on June 5, 2007 at 8:05 PM
georgej and PRCalDude…funny I understood exactly what you were saying. Sheesh, go figure a troll would spin it.
Surprise!
tickleddragon on June 5, 2007 at 8:07 PM
Ah codewords… need the secret decoder to know what they really mean…
The thread is about riots – comments were relevant.
