Video: Dobbs levels Bush for impugning amnesty opponents’ motives
posted at 11:13 am on June 2, 2007 by Allahpundit
LBJ famously said of media coverage of Vietnam, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost America.” Forty years later the names and issues have changed but the basic point remains: If he’s lost Lou Dobbs, he’s lost … a guy who believes in the North American Union.
He’s lost us too, though, hasn’t he?

Radio host Micheal Medved has taken to calling Lou Dobbs “Loon Doggs” or something similar.
Sure, Lou maybe a bit over the top. The basic point that 12,000,000 to 20,000,000 illegal immigrants all from one foreign country are here, having crossed an undefended border is still true.
gmoonster on June 2, 2007 at 11:18 AM
I’m kinda wondering who he hasn’t lost at the moment. I know, I know… his approval is something like 20%, but I can only assume that at least 20% of Americans are blind and deaf.
Lehosh on June 2, 2007 at 11:23 AM
Intersting… what are his current approval numbers?
You’d think the big pollsters would be all over this.
Romeo13 on June 2, 2007 at 11:31 AM
If the Pres. and our Lawmakers aren’t paying attention to the near fury of American citizens at this point then it’s for sure time to throw the bums out.
The message is there loud and clear guys the peoples will couldn’t be any more plain.
Action first no amnesty later.

My Problem with Dobbs is that he is also for ending NAFTA and other regional trade agreements.
Bill C on June 2, 2007 at 11:47 AM
Say want you want about Lou, but his message about how the middle class is being screwed is right on the money.
infidel4life on June 2, 2007 at 11:51 AM
Although Dobbs is generally intemperate when talking about immigration, he is unusually temperate and right on the mark here. Bush has lost me for good.
I don’t appreciate being accused by the President (by association, of course, but I take it personally) of being a racist and not having the best interests of the nation at heart, especially as my academic research has been focused on dissecting past racism and its negative consequences in the area I live in.
ptolemy on June 2, 2007 at 11:52 AM
The race card being played by Republicans really burns my shorts. I have many (LEGAL) immigrant friends from all over the world including the Philippines, Japan, China, Norway, etc who I love. Just because I don’t agree with wide-open borders for illegals (jumping ahead of LEGAL applicants) does not make me or the vast majority of the other opponents to this insane bill racists!
gmoonster on June 2, 2007 at 12:08 PM
No, the 12-20 million illegals are not all from Mexico. A Pew Hispanic Center study (links to a PDF) estimates that 57% are from Mexico and 75% are from Latin America broadly.
In a recent interview with Hugh Hewitt, Tamar Jacoby argues that the U.S. economy generates about 1.5 million new jobs per year and needs about 500,000 illegals to meet this. She does not address how many of the low skilled illegals coming to the U.S. do not fill new jobs as much as displace more highly-paid, low-skilled citizens. The types of jobs being generated makes a big difference as to what kind of immigration policy (tighter or more generous, skilled or unskilled) we need. She also ignores that a segment of our citizens will either not want to work in white-collar jobs or will lack the education, smarts, etc. to do so. Should they be denied the opportunity to earn an honest wage because a non-citizen is willing to replace them for 1/2-2/3 the pay? The Barney Frank, lets screw the blue-collared today so we can hook them up a generation hence, when newly minted citizens vote our way, seems like a bad bargain (which is one reason the immigration bill may be a bad bargain for Democrats).

If it weren’t for bad political instincts, Bush wouldn’t have any at all.

Say what you will about Mr. Dobbs but, he is absolutely correct on this issue.
MCPO Airdale on June 2, 2007 at 12:34 PM
I can not imagine Bush having a approval rating higher than the teens.

Lou Dobb’s a liar. I put him in the same boat as Pat Buchanon.

Before you hitch your wagons too tightly to the “wisdom” of Lou Dobbs I’d recommend considering the following information. Appropriately titled
“Errors and Extremist Sources on Lou Dobbs Tonight”
http://www.splcenter.org/news/item.jsp?sid=94
And for those who want to do a touch and go landing on the site and make a judgment, check their homepage first — good organization.
Who would have thought the Chinese were conducting secret maneuvers along the border?
Bradky on June 2, 2007 at 1:12 PM
Allah, my friend. You’ve lost Cronkite. Even if Dobbs is totally off base on the NAU issue, and I’m not convinced. He’s dead right on everything else I’ve heard him say. Please don’t go the route of Michael Medved, a man whose show I can no longer listen to due to his insane lashing out at his own people over immigration. President Bush’s insane positions and condescending insults to his own base convinces a lot of people that an NAU is just crazy enough that he would love the idea.
dostrick on June 2, 2007 at 1:13 PM
And of course, “amnesty opponents’” would never stoop to the dirty trick of questioning President Bush’s motives. Oh, wait…
WTF?! The middle class has never had it so good.
When will Pat Buchanan start guest-posting here, I wonder? Hot Air seems to be channeling him lately.
I don’t question anyone’s motives, but screaming “AMNESTY! AMNESTY! AMNESTY!” is not a substitute for a reasoned argument about a complicated problem.
LagunaDave on June 2, 2007 at 1:14 PM
Umm… you do know that real wage growth has lagged inflation for many years.
And that the inflation figures we use are low…. I don’t know where THEY get their “prices” to figure inflation, but Beef has gone up almost 50% in price here in Denver over the last year. Gas is up, home prices up, Car prices up, Book prices, software prices… movie prices (7.75 for a MATINEE?)…
I don’t know what world they live in, but in mine, prices I pay seem to be going up a lot faster than the so called inflation index.
Romeo13 on June 2, 2007 at 1:20 PM
Bush has lost all my confidence. He is not a true conservative. He is TOTALLY wrong about illegal immigration. He is wrong about border security. He is allowed this congress to overspend. He has done nothing for social security and medicare. He has done nothing for our manufacturing jobs shipping overseas. He last 4 years in office will be some of the worst in Republican history.
If it wasn’t for fighting a very effective war on terror and kicking Saddam’s butt….and getting Roberts & Alito on the Supreme Court… he would be in my opinion, the worst president (besides Carter) in American history.

Rasmussen Reports
President Bush Job Approval
Saturday, June 02, 2007
Advertisment
During the month of May, President George W. Bush’s Job Approval rating fell to the lowest level ever recorded by Rasmussen Reports–36%. That’s down a full three points from April’s 39% which had previously been the lowest rating for the President.
During the full month of May, just 16% Strongly Approved of the way the President has performed his role and 45% Strongly Disapproved. Both those figures are also the worst ever recorded for the President who lost ground across all partisan and demographic groups.

You know, I just really wish someone could explain what’s going on for me.
I really, really liked Dubya. He was the first Republican I voted for as President. The initial tax cuts, and then his moral clarity on 9/11, his really rather extraordinary leadership in 2001-2002 …. well, I was really proud to give him my vote in 2004. For the first time in my life, I actually had a cheesy political sign in my front yard. I even found blogs like this one.
So what the hell happened? Forgetting Harriet Miers and the Dubai Ports fiasco, even setting aside the unused veto pen and the out of control spending …
… forgetting all that – what happened to my President? In Iraq? In his leadership on the broader war on terror?
I just don’t get it. I don’t have to agree with his every policy – but I need him to LEAD me. To explain what HE believes, why HE thinks its right for the country.
And now, on immigration, I don’t even know what he believes. I have absolutely no idea what is going on right now. Where did his core principles go?
If he has a different agenda for immigration, fine – but at least explain it for me. Help me understand. Right now, I see NO reason for Bush Administration policy … not even from a purely political standpoint. I understand that Presidents sometimes neglect the base for political reasons … but what are the political gains here? What is he gaining? What principle is he upholding?
I don’t want to attack him. I don’t even understand enough of where his head’s at to attack him. I just want him – or Tony Snow – or somebody to explain what’s going on, in short sentences.
I could honestly swear that 2002 Dubya and 2007 Dubya are two completely different people.
I just do not get it. And its bumming me out.

Wow, this explains why there are so many illegal aliens. That adds up to 132%!!!
JayHaw Phrenzie on June 2, 2007 at 2:17 PM
Lou Dobbs is spot on about the issue of illegal immigration and Bush. Bush seems to want his own personal agenda put in place, regardless of the facts, by any means he can. In my opinion, Bush is more interested in the promoting the advatage and short term profit for corporations and the wealthy than the welfare of the nation. I will be glad when he is no longer president.
omegaram on June 2, 2007 at 2:23 PM
All of the political posturing and straw man tossing aside, you know what really p*sses me off about how the White House is handling this? They are insulting and impugning the character of their own voters on this issue more than they ever did the democrats on other issues, such as the war on Terror or Iraq. He’ll cheerfully let Linda Chavez call his own voters nazis for opposing the Shamnesty, but he won’t call Harry Reid, John Murtha, or Ted Kennedy cowards for their hateful rhetoric against the troops. The GOP has a long way to go before they ever receive a dime from me again; I said it before 2006, and I’ll say it again: I’d rather see Democrats in power than Republicans who lie about their positions to get elected and screw me over anyway. At least the Democrats are honest about hating me from the beginning and don’t ask for my money or support.

I just read a story from the evil NYT about how Rush told his listeners that Bush was not going to lose him on Iraq or on National security. WTF? If open borders is not National security, than what is? If someone breaks into your home and KILLS 3,000 of your family, you first lock the F*#&en door. Then you hunt down and kill the MF who did it. WTF is wrong with the people who are supposed to be protecting our back?

But I must say something just in the off chance someone out there might actually want to know how I feel and read it… and pass it on to the Prez.

I like Michael, except in this topic. He still refuses to even debate about the Heritage Foundation’s report that it will destroy SS, Medicaid and many other programs. He still refuses to discuss any of those issues.
As I told Linda “You’re a Nazi” Chavez. I would openly accept these people and give them Amnesty, if the US was still the sink or swim style of government of 100 years ago. The fact is that these people aren’t coming to work, many are coming for the public benefits.

Professor, his drivers are different from his constituents’, whom he no longer needs, as he never, ever, will run for office.
Some thoughts:
- the WoT is for the next at least 20-30 years and only history will prove him right or wrong
- immigration if very personal for him (his nanny, whom he loves like a mother, having grown up/lived in Texas, having relatives, etc.)
- pc advisors who tell him “be great by doing something extraordinary, something with your BDS’d foes, something the rest of the world, the MSM, the U.N. love”
- the wish of leaders to be remembered as humanitarians, above all other wishes
- the erroneous belief that if he signs this bill, a good chunk of the new immigrants, when citizens, will vote conservative – thus his choice for the leadership of the RNC and Commerce
- he no longer needs the base, religious or not, and he might not have agreed with the base’s platform in the first place [too religious, too not-for-choice (his mother, wife, daughters, and formerly his father for-choicers), too anti-gays, too financially restrictive, etc., etc.]
- the Iraq war is not going to end, or will shift into a different phase, and the Americans are bored with its latent form
- surely others which don’t come to mind now
What galls me is that he doesn’t simply call this an amnesty and then fights for it, win or loose. That he can’t communicate clearly is a given. That his communications dept. is as lacking as it is makes it complicated, at best. That they insult those who disagree is beyond an egregious mistake.
I don’t view this ‘divorce’ as a bad thing. I’m glad it is happening now, and not, say, mid 2008.

jeffNWV on June 2, 2007 at 11:16 PM
Finally George W Bush has brought the nation together, conservatives agreeing with the MSM, the end of the World?
Very simple!
Take the first part, the boarder security part first, alone, nothing else and pass that times 5.
While we are waiting, enforce ALL EXISTING LAWS, including deporting the 600,000 illegles that already have deportation orders that are running around doing God knows what. Also, cracking down on employers and making illegals pay taxes and for medical care and anchor kids education would also be nice. I don’t have kids and pay dearly for the school system, including off spring of illegles who pay little or no income or property taxes. The only winners are the home builders that hire all the illegals in this area for construction jobs.
Than lets think about “amnesty” or some kind of process to bring the illegals into the “sunshine” or what ever.
I don’t know why Conservatives are so MAD and being called racist in response to their opposition to this bill. This is no different than all the BS you all come up regarding Iraq: traitors, cut and runner, defeat-O-crat, nazi appeasers and so on. Good for the goose gander deal. I hope you learn that talking and debating facts is much better than Slogans, TALKING POINTS, propaganda and rhetoric.

The Amnesty Plan GWB is pushing is biggest redistribution of wealth proposed going to non US citizens in History. Bush is trying to get taxpayers in America to lift Mexico out of poverty by getting Americans to fund it.
The Heritage Foundation has done the math and nobody can dispute their figures with any meaningful argument.Just based on the baseline 12 million it will cost a minimum of 2.5 trillion but if you add all the relatives that will be chain migrating, the costs will reach 4,5,6 or 7 trillion or more depending on how many are able to get across the border and claim a Z visa.
If you do not think this will destroy America as we know it you have rocks in your head.
The Bush family dream of a One World Government and his alliance with Ted Kennedy should be all you need to know what has happened to him. He simply has stopped trying to fool us into thinking he was or ever was a conservative.
He is the worst President we ever have had and I think you can make an argument that he is a Traitor. He has not only sold out conservatives but all Americans in an attempt to eliminate our current way of life creating his wet dream of a North American Union.

You do realize that SPLC is run by Morris Dees. He is crook and propagandist.
“Dees’ organization should be called the Southern Impoverishment Law Center because he and his legal hucksters are playing perverted Robin Hood–stealing money from loyal, little-guy Americans who want to protect our borders and giving it to unworthy illegal immigrants who break the law and shouldn’t be here.”
This is the same guy that had an Casey Nethercott’s ranch taken away from him and given to Illegal Aliens that were trespassing on his property after crossing the border Illegally.
Now I know where you are getting your false and misleading Immigration data. You have jumped the shark with this outfit.
ScottyDog on June 3, 2007 at 12:23 PM
You use Debbie Schlussel to rebut the SPLC?? Please that’s like using David Duke to rebut Jesse Jackson and PUSH.
Guess you are riding your own special shark.
Bradky on June 3, 2007 at 2:00 PM
He is most known for suing skin head and klan groups for their actions. Is that a bad thing?
As far as Dobbs goes I noticed that you couldn’t refute anything the SPLC said regarding his “sources”.
Bradky on June 3, 2007 at 2:10 PM
Bradky
I will not waste my time with you. Using Morris Dees as a source is ridiculous.
I am sure Debbie Schlussel who frequently posts at HotAir would like to know that you are comparing her to David Duke.
ScottyDog on June 3, 2007 at 3:44 PM
You absolutely refuse to address the points raised with your opinion of Morris Dees. Let’s review the information:
In April 14, 2005, Dobbs said an “invasion of illegal aliens” was bringing “highly contagious diseases” to America “decades after those diseases had been eradicated” here. Reporter Christine Romans stated that more than 7,000 new cases of leprosy had been reported in the previous three years. The real number of new leprosy cases from 2002 through 2004 was 398, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dobbs and Romans said their source for the 7,000 figure was the late Madeleine Cosman, a lawyer who told an anti-immigrant conference in 2005 that “most” Latino immigrant men “molest girls under 12, although some specialize in boys, and some in nuns.”
• On Nov. 4, 2003, Dobbs’ said “illegal aliens” are “taking up a third of the cells in our federal penitentiaries.” The reality: The Government Accountability Office reported in 2005 that 27 percent of federal inmates in 2004 were immigrants – including those here legally. Another GAO study estimated that just 12 percent of non-U.S. citizens in federal custody were there for committing violent crimes. Dobbs often covers crime issues relating to undocumented persons, but several studies debunk the notion that there is a relatively high level of criminality among undocumented immigrants.
• On Oct. 30, 2003, a Dobbs reporter claimed that a National Academy of Sciences report showed an economic loss of up to $10 billion from immigration. The report actually showed that immigrants caused a net gain in the U.S. gross national product of between $1 billion and $10 billion.
• On February 10, 2006, state Rep. Russell Pearce of Arizona was quoted as saying, “You know, the illegal aliens kill more people on an annual basis than we probably lost in the Iraq war to date in the United States. It’s enough is enough.” At that time, approximately 2,500 of U.S. servicemen and women had died in Iraq. Though there were 16,692 murders in the U.S. in 2005, there is no data that show how many murders were committed by undocumented immigrants.
• On May 19, 2006, Dobbs had on as a guest Robert Rector, a senior research fellow from the Heritage Foundation, discussing his recent report about the number of immigrants that would come to the U.S. if the McCain-Kennedy immigration reform bill then under consideration by the Senate were to be passed. Dobbs said, “Your initial report suggested well over 100 million over the next 10 years.” Though Dobbs noted that the White House disputed Rector’s numbers, Dobbs supported Rector’s research, telling him, “thank you for paying close attention.” As to Rector’s numbers, they defy logic. As demographers quickly pointed out, his minimum figure of 100 million is equal to almost the entire current population of Mexico. His high-end estimate of 180 million over the next 20 years would require that the equivalent of the current population of Central America be added, too. A series of leading demographers told the San Francisco Chronicle on June 20, 2006, that Rector’s projections were vastly overstated, ignored the effects of emigration and used unreasonably high estimates of legalization and naturalization.
• On May 23, 2006, CNN correspondent Casey Wian referred to Mexican President Vicente Fox’s visit to the U.S. as a “Mexican military incursion.” Wian went on to say that Fox’s trip could be called “the Vicente Fox Aztlan tour,” referring to the conspiracy theory, popular among anti-immigration zealots, that Mexico is plotting to “reconquer” the American Southwest. As Wian spoke, a graphic appeared on the screen – a map of the United States highlighting the seven southwestern states that Mexico supposedly covets and calls “Aztlan.” Remarkably, it was prominently sourced to the Council of Conservative Citizens, a white supremacist hate group that has described blacks as “a retrograde species of humanity” and compared pop singer Michael Jackson to an ape.
• Chris Simcox, co-founder of the Minuteman Project and a top anti-immigration leader, has appeared some 20 times on Dobbs’ show. But Dobbs has never reported that Simcox says he has seen the Chinese army secretly maneuvering along the U.S.-Mexico border or that he is a member of the speakers’ bureau of the extreme-right John Birch Society.
• Glenn Spencer, head of the American Patrol – regarded as a hate group by the Center – has been interviewed on the Dobbs show at least twice, on Jan. 7 and June 4, 2004. Spencer promotes the idea that the Mexican government is involved in a secret plot to take over the Southwest. He has also predicted that “thousands will die” in a forthcoming Mexican invasion. Dobbs did not mention the criticism of Spencer’s group, the fact that he has spoken at other hate group gatherings or his actions in shooting up a neighbor’s garage.
Obviously it must be true since all you can do is say it is not credible because you don’t like Morris Dees. Just where are the Chinese units located anyway?

There you go again smearing anyone that disagrees with the lies that are posted at Morris Dee’s website. The man that sued to have Casey Nethercott’s ranch given to illegal Aliens that crossed the border Illegally and trespassed on his ranch. What a patriotic thing to do. Aid and abet Illegals that are invading the USA.
Just because you cut and paste a bunch of lies then expect me to analyze them for you does not make it so when I refuse to play your game.
Glenn Spencer and I have been friends for a long time before he moved from Southern California to Arizona. I marched with him in 1994 in support of Proposition 187 with the group Voice of Citizens Together. He was part of the group that authored Proposition 187 and I joined him knocking on doors and passing out fliers. He was also instrumental in getting Gray Davis recalled for not appealing the court decision that overturned 187 even though Californians supported it by over 60%.
Glenn Spencer has spoken before Congress, produced numerous documentaries exposing the Reconquista movement in the USA so your contention that he has not proved it is nonsense.
Trying to make your arguments by calling me a racist is the last gasp of someone that cannot win the argument with facts.
Glenn Spencer is currently working with the Border Patrol to help enforce our borders. He was instrumental in getting unmanned drones adopted by the BP and financed a demonstration project out of his own pocket called BorderHawk.
He was the first to sound the alarm that the Secure Fence Act of 2006 was shut down by the Bush Administration after he surveyed the border in the ABP Border Hawk M.
To learn more about his activities, why don’t you go to his website and learn for yourself why he is not a racist.
