Eric Alterman to liberals: Fear the Fred; Update: Fred forms fundraising committee

posted at 1:59 pm on June 1, 2007 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Being a liberal, he can’t quite accept that Thompson might appeal to voters partly because he’s authentically conservative. And if he thinks the media would favor Fred in a campaign against Obama, he’s off in never-never-land and ain’t never-never coming back. But his basic point is sound:

Thompson is beloved by a media that feels betrayed by that meanie-friend-of-Jerry-Falwell, John McCain, (though not, it must be said, irrevocably). David Brooks is so all over the guy he’s willing to quote Stephen Hayes, a journalist who has so successfully divorced himself from reality that Dick Cheney picked him to write his official biography.

A Republican Congressman from Tennessee named Zack Wamp put his finger on something important when he explained: “We need a president of the United States after the 2008 election who will rise above the partisan challenges … That person is 6 foot 6. He has a commanding voice. He has a commanding presence. He makes people feel secure. He makes us feel confident. He is slow to act but he is resolute. He is the kind of leader innately that the United States needs today.”…

I’ll admit it: with the Democrats choosing between nominating the first ever woman presidential candidate and the first ever black presidential candidate – both highly competent, but who cares – Thompson’s strengths as a non-threatening, likable, well-trained candidate, with weaknesses that don’t really matter, look like real trouble to me.

My own support for Fred depends on the extent to which he runs on issues instead of persona. Every candidate has to run on both and he’s had plenty to say in his radio commentaries so I’m not too worried, but if we end up seeing too much of the pick-up truck or hearing too much about whittling or whatever and it turns into a “he looks the part” campaign, I’m going to balk. Insofar as there’s any truth to this garbage, it’s the platform that needs re-“branding,” not the party’s personality.

Alterman also seems to think Gore would be the best person to challenge Thompson, which may well be true. He’s the wonkiest of the Democrats so he’d throw Fred’s own thin legislative record into starker contrast. That didn’t work out so well for him in 2000, granted, but there probably aren’t a lot of independents left who voted for Bush that year who don’t wish they could do it over again. Which I guess is another way of saying that we’ve already had eight years of a lightweight good ol’ boy Republican, and no one’s much in the mood for another four. Fred had better be careful not to give the media a reason to paint him that way.

Exit question: Is the first sentence of this story the lede of the year?

Update: Just dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.

Funniest thing I’ve heard all day!

Gore has one thing that makes him the perfect Dem candidate:
he gives the quintessential opportunity for a hate Bush vote.

Think about it. What better way to give Bush the middle finger than voting for the guy he beat in 2000? And since the whole “Bush Sucks” platform is all the Dem’s have, who better to run on it than Bush’s original victim?

“Tapping into his wife.” Can they say that in a family newspaper?!?!

Mallard T. Drake on June 1, 2007 at 2:14 PM

hearing too much about whittling

What do you have against whittling?

Eat grits while you whittle; and you’ll understand -everything- .

The subtitle in the link was mildly amusing:

HOT RUNNING MATES THOM & JERI

Jeri is extremely Hawt.

Valiant on June 1, 2007 at 2:17 PM

Gruff, graying Republican Fred Thompson has a proven track record of tapping into a younger generation – starting with his wife.

ROFL that’s not right at all.

bj1126 on June 1, 2007 at 2:18 PM

What is up with this photo of fred?? He doesn’t look this good. Where are the bags under his eyes? The droopy jowl’s?

csdeven on June 1, 2007 at 2:19 PM

Frankly, I am looking forward to someone who can clearly communicate the conservative principles without sounding whiney and tripping over the syntax.

I just wanted to comment on the story itself. Do we really care about an age difference when both of them are over 40?

Esthier on June 1, 2007 at 2:20 PM

I’m willing to bet money that Al Gore will enter the race for president if he wins the Nobel Peace Prize in December… I mean, come on, absolute moral authority!

DU seems to think so. Though it is funny to see comments about “trophy wives” from people with olbermann/kucinich avatars.

We all want to hear the ‘plan’. If Fred! is all Andy Griffith we will know soon enough but I gotta say, Allah, that country folk aren’t all just about pick-ups, grits, and sun-tea. L.A.rs or N.Y.rs, same thing…it is like the civilized universe goes as far as the county line and then it is all indian territory.

Aren’t trophy wives and age-difference marriages what Hollywood is all about? So by extension isn’t that a democrat virtue? Will they have the nerve to call Fred! out while sitting in their “glass houses”? It will be fun watching them try…..

Mallard T. Drake on June 1, 2007 at 2:35 PM

fred? is for sure going to have problems with the playboy image he has fostered for himself. Along with the pickup truck fakery, his lobbying activities, and his piss-poor senate record, he’d better be everything the groupies think he is or I’m afraid we may have some groupies that don’t leave their homes for weeks.

csdeven on June 1, 2007 at 2:35 PM

Speaking of tapping in

I predict Fred! will tap into voter angst and announce as a third party candidate.

You heard it here first.

locomotivebreath1901 on June 1, 2007 at 2:38 PM

And age difference compares to Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher?

What’s to fear, he’s a father figure.

The droopy jowl’s?

The word jowls is plural, not possessive. No apostrophe required.

I think she is an asset and as the article states, he (UNLIKE RUDI AND NEWT!) was divorced a long time before they even met. She is smart, beautiful and obviously able to accomplish a goal (like landing Fred!). As a woman, I like them together just fine! GO FRED!

labwrs on June 1, 2007 at 3:15 PM

My own support for Fred depends on the extent to which he runs on issues instead of persona.

AP, can we infer that Fred’s views are more compatible with yours than Rudy’s?

Bill C on June 1, 2007 at 3:15 PM

As a woman, it doesn’t bother me either even though trophy wives (I dislike that term) are becoming more common among politicians than actors and athletes. But I suppose the MSM will have a field day with it for a few days.

Thompson’s strengths as a non-threatening, likable, well-trained candidate, with weaknesses that don’t really matter, look like real trouble to me.

Mr. Alterman is only troubled for his party, but not for the country. It’s a strange state of affairs when Eric Alterman is more positive on a conservative candidate than ours csdeven.

On younger wives, for those lefties who can’t find anything else to rant on: see George Mitchell as the liberal symbol on topic.

The marriage is the first for the 35-year-old Ms. MacLachlan and the second for Mr. Mitchell, 61, whose first marriage ended in divorce.

I care that our future president can keep this country safe, looks out for this country first, lets us work and produce, and enjoy the fruits of our labor, can send the MSM playing with themselves, can easily complete a substantive sentence, has a backbone and cojones, makes Zawahiri and Gadahn be the miniscule ridiculous ants of the world, doesn’t lecture me incessantly as a child, doesn’t shove soc*al*sm onto this still wonderous country.

Their spouse can bake or not, but shouldn’t be an embarassment to this country.

Bad Candy on June 1, 2007 at 3:34 PM

eh. so what if he’s 25 years older. Some women like that kind of thing. me, not so much.

In all reality, it doesn’t make a hell ‘o beans – it’s how he stands on the issues that’s important. From what I’ve read, he’s the real deal.

Go Fred!

pullingmyhairout on June 1, 2007 at 3:37 PM

It don’t take much for the groupies to get hypnotized, do it?

Absolutely. Why else would they go for Hilary. Supporters of Fred! on the other hand are listening to what he actually has to say, and he has something to say. And, here’s the clincher, no long record of legal problems, and a spouse who’s never been impeached.

But hey, why cloud the issue with facts, right? Let’s tune in to Oprah and see who SHE says we should go for…

There is also something very right with a person who doesn’t have to have such a power-job to be defined who they are.

And there’s the Catch-22. If you’re the hyper-ambitious type spending 16 hours a day wooing lobbyists, making campaign speeches, sponsoring every new piece of legislation you can get your hands on, battling Chuck Schumer for camera time, etc… you’re a “Washington Insider”.

If you don’t, you’re “lazy” or ineffective.

Fred’s repuation as being lackadaisical Senator is a legitimate concern, but on the other hand there’s an appeal to someone who hasn’t been grooming themselves for the Presidency their entire adult life like Gore or Kerry, and to a lesser degree McCain. It’s pretty hard to trust someone who will say and do anything to win.

Hollowpoint on June 1, 2007 at 5:05 PM

But hey, why cloud the issue with facts, right? Let’s tune in to Oprah and see who SHE says we should go for…

Nah, I’m pretty sure csdeven gets his mindless talking points from DKos and DU instead; his trolling is almost indistinguishable from what they have to say about Fred!

csdeven on June 1, 2007 at 5:30 PM

Fred has three advantages:

1. He’s well like, by most people, personally.

2. He has a favorable (if not stellar) political record, and is very articulate.

3. He appears an outsider to both the Dems and GOP insiders currently in positions of power.

Righ now, number 3 is probably his most redeaming attribute.

I have even given up to post corrections. In the end who really cares? Make a good, or any, point and let it be, says the lady, to herself in particular…

Hollowpoint, you forgot the most ambitious, in a bad way, person – Hillary. Those are the people easier to beat because the Americans, while they like successful people, don’t like blind ambitious ones, especially those who’re out to screw them for idealism. We’ll discuss this more going forward.

Hillary is in a class of her own when it comes to blind ambition. What’s baffling is that while most everyone recognises it, about half the country disapproves of her (and this anything-to-win ambition has to play a part), the other half seems willing to vote for her despite her cynical, empty ambition.

The only thing that makes sense to me is the notion that Bill Clinton’s supporters view her as an extention of his presidency, either not knowing or not caring that Hillary only shares her husband’s political ambition and ruthlessness without the actual skills. I’m certainly no Bill Clinton supporter, but I think it undeniable that he was a very skilled politician.

Hollowpoint on June 1, 2007 at 6:04 PM

Will the real fred? please stand up?

csdeven on June 1, 2007 at 6:21 PM

I don’t get the feeling that guys find the idea of older men with a hot younger women offensive, and pictures of the little darlin’s will mute the anti-bimbo factor with the ladies soon enough. “Kehn” may have to ease up on the bronzing for prime time, but unless she sounds like Valerie Plame when she actually opens her mouth, I don’t see a big problem here.

I’m afraid we’re just going to have to live with the “looking Presidential” crap; it’s an institutional favorite with the MSM.

JM Hanes on June 1, 2007 at 6:30 PM

I resent that the 26 YO difference is repeated more than her age is. Media does that so often that you soon associate her with the number 26. She’s 40 for gosh sakes. She is a mature woman, not a kid.

PattyAnn on June 1, 2007 at 6:55 PM

At least Fred got divorced before he started dating. Unlike some other politicians we could name.

I’m a bitter old crone and the age difference thing doesn’t bother me a bit. I think his wife is lovely and it’d be fun to see little kids running around in the White House.

Bad Penny on June 1, 2007 at 6:57 PM

Hollowpoint on June 1, 2007 at 5:10 PM

In all fairness, Hollowpoint, csdeven is NOT a troll. If you’d paid any attention to other discussions/threads and saw his input there, you’d know this.

I’ve had my “fights” with him on the subject of Fred!, and he IS singleminded of purpose in his distrust of Fred!. This is genuine. Annoying as his highly repetitive towncryer’esque rebukes of Fredfolks and Fred are, he tends to sound like one of us (meaning righties) in most other subjects.

Now, I’m not sure what’s up with the misspellings and horrible grammar (other than he’s doing it on purpose) but rest assured, he is not a troll…or a lefty. He IS, tho, a Mitt supporter, I think. Which contributes to the nastiness toward Fred!

Please just let him cry in the town about Fred? and try to ignore any slap as his frustration at our perceived zealousness. If push comes to shove, he’s said that he’ll throw in with us if Fred! gets the nom.

cs, what the heck are you doing with the spelling/grammar??

tickleddragon on June 1, 2007 at 8:01 PM

With all the wusses we have running the Republican party…I just see Fred as a true conservative who is pragmatic…will kick butt and take names…I can definately see him fighting Islamofacist better than Bush…who just keeps turning the other cheek…(this has had to go beyond 490 times by now)…

CCRWM on June 1, 2007 at 10:11 PM

Appearing on Fox News Channel in 1999, Kehn sniped that Bill Clinton “is more credible as a clown than he is as a president.”

Never more so than if he were contending for “First Gentleman”.

IrishEyes on June 1, 2007 at 11:17 PM

I just wanted to comment on the story itself. Do we really care about an age difference when both of them are over 40?

It doesn’t matter at all. The irony is that the people likely most upset by it will be the ones reading the Bible and admiring people in it who are in relationships with even greater age differences.

csdeven,

You understand that the “fake Fred” photo is a Law and Order promo shot and that he has little to no control over the airbrushing of it? He has given interviews with zero make up and looking quite haggard so I don’t think he is overly concerned with that sort of thing. I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that you are a Ron Paul supporter right?
