Chavez began by telling Laura that her last Mexican ancestor crossed the border in 170? and that she has Irish immigrant ancestors . . . WELL THEN why does she purport to speak for the people south of the border?
She is a typical “I wear my spanish surname like a badge” affirmative action queen. I don’t care if she is GOP or not, she is hispanic only when it will benefit her.
If her name was Linda Smith no one would ever have heard of her and she would never have held lofty government office.

Laura Ingraham is right, Chavez is wrong. The reason there is increased worry about illegal immigration now rather than between 1995 and 2000 is worry about things like 9/11 happening again. That is when my opinion changed on the issue.
Jens on June 1, 2007 at 12:45 PM
If you make them legal then they get minimum wage and everything else. Then you have to bring more illegal aliens in to do the jobs that the newly legalized aliens won’t do!
Gooch on June 1, 2007 at 12:52 PM
What really frosts my mug is how casually these so-called conservatives play the bigot and racist cards against their own allies. Against the people who have gone to the mat for them time and again. It makes so angry I see stars!
TheBigOldDog on June 1, 2007 at 12:54 PM
Hmmmm, 147 year wait to legally come in from Mexico.
The points about increasing legal immigration are valid. But as the child of legal immigrants who waited in line, the main point is still the rule of law. If we tolerate law breaking from the first step into the country, we as a society have no leg to stand on in enforcing other laws.
Another law to look at is the “anchor baby” citizenship situation. I am not usually in favor of emulating Europe, but the UK and Australia had similar laws regarding this until the 80s, and had to change for similar reasons.

Many of my lifelong freinds are in the trades, carpenters, electricians, plastering and drywall. They’ve been getting bent over since 95 trying to compete with “3 illegals in a van” who cut your throat on pricing, don’t pay their employees a living wage, outrageous insurance, workers comp, license fees, register their vehicles.
It’s not that Americans won’t do the work, they just can’t do it and LEGALLY support a family and be a good citizen when the playing field is so lopsided.
Alden Pyle on June 1, 2007 at 12:56 PM
Truth is listening and will take the first (wo)man who screams.
I love those who are in favor of this bill say it isn’t amnesty because they have to pay a fine. I call it a bargain. Can I stop paying income tax, stop registering and inspecting my auto, don’t renew my license, go back to school for free, etc, etc, all for a one time fee of five large? Where do I sign up?
When I drove through New Mexico and Arizona all the hispanics kept trying to speak Spanish to me because of my “brown” Sicilian skin. So all I got to do is brush up on my Spanish and the streets will be paved with (your) gold.

Since they’re here to do work that American’s won’t do, can we get them to secure the border?
BacaDog on June 1, 2007 at 1:00 PM
Exactly. They are being squeezed out of the market by unfair competition.
Can you imagine how much we could get for American Citizenship if we put it up for auction? We’d payoff a good chunk of our national debt overnight.

Mmmmmm frosty mug!
This issue is tearing apart the Right. That’s exactly what the Left has been praying for. (Who or what they might pray to is another topic all together). I’m sure it’s causing divisions on the Left als but we don’t hear as much about that. Perhaps the HotAir staff can dig up some examples of Lefty on Lefty verbal violence over this topic? It can’t be just us on this one.
Tony737 on June 1, 2007 at 1:03 PM
If they get to stay here, the reason they broke the law in the first place, it’s amnesty, plain and simple.
voiceofreason on June 1, 2007 at 1:04 PM
Linda,
I’m related to Mexicans by birth and marriage and I speak Spanish, and I am 100% against more uneducated Mexican (heck include all uneducated people) immigration.
I think Linda thinks her genetics makes her able to talk about Mexican immigrations. She doesn’t speak Spanish…Ha! I honestly don’t think that she has any experience with illegal immigrants other than her illegal alien maid.
The guy next door to me used to run illegals. The apartment less than a block away was a “drop house”.
Many of the illegals that I know in the neighborhood who I have even helped with English and stuff are extremely nice, but the fact is that virtually all use more tax money than they pay. I don’t want to re-distribute my money to others, and this just increases that group.
Tim Burton on June 1, 2007 at 1:06 PM
Bah…. Chavez does not get it… its not how many come over each year, its the total amount of illegals here from all years!
They say 12 million, but I will bet its at LEAST 20 million here ILLEGALY… TOO MANY!
Romeo13 on June 1, 2007 at 1:06 PM
Fine, fine, fine. So I agree NOT to tell Linda to “go back to Mexico,” okay?

Thank you Laura. Stay locked on target!

Let us not forget what happened back in Colorado when ICE raided a meat processing plant and arrested somewhere around 400 illegals (not all from Mexico). The very next day, the local people who use to work there returned to get their jobs back that they use to have at wages that were undercut by the illegals. The argument that GWB has used along with his surrogates is “they” do the work Americans won’t. Not this time.

I didn’t realize that Freda Chavez had such tap-dancing ability, becuase she tap-danced right around the main thrust of her column. Of course, she played the “10%” card as I knew she would, while conveniently ignoring that she also wrote “stripped bare, that’s what this debate is all about.”
That’s right, Freda.
It’s not about national security.
It’s not about the rule of law.
It’s not about fairness to those immigrants who follow our laws.
It’s not about undermining the wages of Americans at the lowest rung of the economic ladder.
It’s not about national sovereignty.
It’s not about assimilating into American culture.
It’s not preventing criminals like MS-13 members getting in.
It’s not about the extra costs borne by U.S. taxpayers to provide medical care for illegals and the education of their children.
It’s not about standing up to the Atzlan and La Raza crowds.
No, stripped bare this debate isn’t about any of those things, it’s just because some people don’t like Mexicans, isn’t it, Freda?
F you.

A friend of mine who is was a painter got divorced in 2000. He lost his home and because of competition from illegals watched his income drop to the point where he had to move into his parent’s home. He was very bitter and started drinking heavily. We, his family and friends, are still trying to get him help and Chavez says we need illegal immigrant labor. We certainly don’t need anymore manual laborers.
Bill C on June 1, 2007 at 1:19 PM
I think Ingraham had the better of the argument, and Chavez spent quite a bit of time from the outset on the defensive, before anything was even said to her. A lot of crying about anticipated hate-mail…? I thought her argument was weak.

What’s this crap she says about someone working in a poultry farm for $12.50 an hour??? I am an average American w/ about 13.5 years of schooling. I make $12.50 an hour, not in a poultry farm but at an office working part time. Could someone clarify what it is she means by this?? Is she saying that my wages are crap?
StephC on June 1, 2007 at 1:33 PM
Where do I start? The first thing Chavez wanted to point out was the abusive hate mail she is getting. I know the smallest percentage is from the “f**k you” crowd and I would caution conservatives not to express their frustration this way. Hate email was going to be her first argument in labeling conservatives as bigots, I’m glad Laura cut her off.
I implore everyone when writing your representatives or people like Chavez to refrain from the four letter words. Elections are coming soon and we get to fire the whole bunch, I can’t wait.

Bad Candy on June 1, 2007 at 1:41 PM
Linda,
I have absolutely have to disagree with you.
I do not believe that most of the GOP who are against this Amnesty Bill are racist or bigots.
I am 100% against this bill, and I am definitely not racist or a bigot. My church composes of more than 50% of illegals. My neighborhood has a very large illegal population (about 50%).
As I have studied for the GMAT, a local restaurant has allowed me a booth to study most of the night. With this I have gotten to know the workers most who are illegal.
I could keep going, but the fact is that I know illegals.
I know that most are not violent criminals, but I do know that virtually all have committed a crime. They have violated the law coming here, but worse they have done ID theft. I have been a victim of ID theft.
Even that isn’t my full reason for not wanting illegals to stay.
There are the reasons why I want illegals (all, including Mexican, Chinese, German, Canadian, etc. etc.) deported.
1. Those who have tried to get here legally are being screwed.
My friend Eduardo Z. is here on a Student Visa. He has been trying to get resident status the entire time here. Unfortunately, he still doesn’t qualify. He is working to finish his degree in Civil Engineering. He will pay more in taxes than he uses when he graduates. He will not need government handouts.
2. These people committed fraud (getting fake IDs) and broke the law crossing. The Z-visa will not punish them for these crimes. Crimes that personally have cost me money as a victim of ID theft. They only have to pay the fine if they APPLY FOR CITIZENSHIP!!!
3. The over-whelming majority of these people are uneducated and do and will leech public welfare funds.
If you don’t believe me answer me this: Why does my local DES require more Spanish speaking clerks than English?
In fact, let me tell you how they leech (they, includes most of my church, because many have admitted to doing it and explained the scam to me) public benefits.
In AZ, you have the wife go to DES. She applies and one of the questions asked is, “Outside of your children, do you have anyone else living with you?”
You mark no and then they ask you to either do one of two things, the first is to get a letter from the landlord certifying it (which is easy to get for a few dollars). The second is to schedule a person to come check the house. Since you are given the day they show up, you just have your husband move his stuff out to a friends for a couple of days. They come at the scheduled time and check. You then simply move the hubby back in at that point, since they won’t check on you for a year and schedule when they come.
You now have welfare and foodstamp benefits. So the husband works and brings how a check, and the wife stays how watching the children and brings home a check.
While in AZ it is illegal for illegal adults to get welfare/state paid healthcare, it is legal for children to receive benefits due to the Federal Requirement in giving welfare.
It explains how I had most of the illegals in my church were able to have a much higher standard of living than I did when I was in college.
I have talked to many of them about what they have done and it not being a Christian thing to do. A few left the church, most just decided to disagree.
Basically, I have issues with rewarding law breaking and increasing the number of people who will leech off the public dole (and most illegals have less than a HS education.).
You can call me a racist, but I think that is because you so absolutely lack any moral or intellectual authority on this subject that you have gotten to harsh names.
Finally, with your lack of ability to speak Spanish, I can’t help but wonder how much real experience and interaction with illegals you have. Well, outside of the illegal maid you got caught hiring…

Even without 9-11,the high illegal immigration between ’95 and 2000 was hidden from us. Thats why we’re pissed now, we KNOW what happens and how many are really sneaking in, and what they’re doing to our country and economy. It has nothing to do with radical righties or 20 million hispanics.
We want EQUAL and LEGAL immigration.
Allowing all nations worldwide to participate, good immigrants entering legally.
This scares me when conservatives and nearly all public hispanics make these claims.
i.e. its Not amnesty because of a $5000.00 fine, paid over 8 years? Courts don’t allow for that for US citizens, why do they for illegals.
Excuses Linda, irrational excuses.

The left (and so-called ‘Republican conservatives’) argue that the illegals do the work that Americans won’t do.
Question #1: How many people are in the U.S.A. illegally – doing the jobs that ‘Americans won’t do’?
Question #2: How many people in the U.S.A. are unemployed and/or on welfare?
….see where I’m going with this?

Chavez speaks with forked tongue. She a tool in the Bushie toolbox.
csdeven on June 1, 2007 at 2:09 PM
Chaves paints with a pretty broad brush when she states that those who are against the immigration bill are bigots. It sounds like she’s taken a page out of the Democrat handbook of name-calling. I use to admire Chavez, but no more. Right now the only bigotry I have is toward Bush and the Republican Party – of whom I voted for in the last two elections.
The myriad of hoops that the illegal aliens will have to jump through to reach citizenship, i.e., a $5000 fine and returning to Mexico, will be waved because the business lobby, in league with the Democrats, will insist upon a more humane and faster method toward citizenship be used. After all, they will and have argued, we don’t want fathers and their children to be separated.
Add to this the fact that as soon as the bill is signed, the status of the illegal aliens changes, and they will have immediate access to education, healthcare and all of the other social programs. And if you think, then, they will return to Mexico, I have a tortilla factory I’d like to sell you.
The immigration bill, for all practical purposes, is de facto amnesty.
The only thing left is for the Democrats to figure out how to give the illegals the right to vote. At that point, the Republican Party will become non-existent. Game, set, and match the Democrats.
pocomoco on June 1, 2007 at 2:16 PM
69% of the American population wants immigration reform
US Population: 301,977,705
69% would be: 208,364,616
Out of that 208,364,616; 500 or so sent racist emails/posts.
Logical conculsion: The majority of amnesty opponents just don’t like Mexicans.

As long as there is even one able bodied person on welfare or unemployed but otherwise willing to work in this country, there can be no justification whatsoever for importing anyone to supplement the labor force.

She not only cut her off but she cut her off at the knees and showed what a hypocrite she is and how it is a straw dog argument. She admitted that more Hispanics are “racist” then whites. So what then is her point? Not to mention race based ethnocentric politically influential groups like LaRaza, MEChA, LULAC, The Hispanic caucus et al. That is why it bothers me to no end to see folks spend paragraph after paragraph backing up and expounding on how they are no racist and they have Hispanic friends or live in a diverse neighborhood etc. etc. That is exactly what they want. Put you on the defensive because they know that race baiting works and distracts from everything else. We should be on the offense exposing as Laura just did the very hypocrisy of the whole “racist” argument any time it comes up.

pocomoco on June 1, 2007 at 2:28 PM
I am so sick about pro-amnesty hucksters using the word “average” to justify their arguments – “average” education of Americans is 13.5 years, “average” unemployment is 4-5%. So what!
Since when can we compare the inner city high school drop out with the Harvard grad? But their combined educations “average” out to this magic number. What about unemployment for black young adult men which is between 30-40%? Much higher than the average for unemployed lawyers or teachers. Maybe we should start importing illegals to compete with the elite, low unemployment sectors.
Meanwhile, if these hucksters are going to talk about how much we “need” these illegal immigrants, maybe they should use the real statistics of those people whose jobs they are going to take, and don’t average in the Harvard grads and corporate CEO’s to mask reality.
TwoCents on June 1, 2007 at 2:47 PM
Chavez says that most of the illegal immigration occurred between 1995-2000 (a good chunk of it has been on Bush’s watch too). She says it wasn’t a big deal until the media manufactured the issue. Here are some possible reasons besides 9/11 for the controversy.
(1) The 1986 Amnesty was taken to have solved the issue, so it fell off the radar for a long while.
(2) The 2000/2001 internet/stock market bubble collapse made the higher wage earning citizens who competed with illegals more vulnerable to job losses; the market kept those who would do the same work but for less and laid off its more expensive workers.
(3) It takes awhile for the job loss and change of regional demographics to be significant enough for people to notice it.
(4) Identity politics advocates contributed to the issue’s recognition and part of the backlash; their work requires a critical mass of potential constituents; those who immigrated before that critical mass was reached were not as organized and vocal in demands for entitlements.
jaychandra on June 1, 2007 at 3:13 PM
The main thing that bothers me about this is that Ms. Chavez’ (and others’) ad hominem attack is working.
An ad hominem (like calling people that are against the current immigration bill ‘racists’ or ‘xenophobes’) isn’t a fallacy based on it’s truth. You might be an idiot. He might be a racist. She might be fat and slovenly. The point is that it doesn’t matter.
An ad hominem is a fallacy because it has nothing to do with the argument/debate at hand. If I say, “This bill is a bad idea because it will lessen the control we have over our border and their will be even more people in the country, some of them dangerous, that we cannot account for.” and you respond, “You’re only worried about that because you’re a racist xenophobe that hates Mexicans.” you’ve actually done nothing to address my point about it being dangerous to lose control over the border and not know who’s in the country.
That’s what frustrates me about Linda’s argument. Everyone is now focused on whether or not we’re racists.
Theoretically, she could be 100% correct that everyone on her list is actually a xenophobe. It still doesn’t matter! Unless she can refute their arguments against the bill, she has absolutely NOTHING to add to this debate.

bmac on June 1, 2007 at 3:26 PM
Guess what Linda. It doesn’t matter if 90% of Americans are bigots, that has no impact on whether or not the government must enforce the laws of the land. So playing on the idea that those who oppose amnesty are bigots is disingenuous at best, and race-pandering at worst.
We all learned when very young that two wrongs don’t make a right. Justifying open borders by saying that there are a lot of bigots out there? Sorry, that gotcha doesn’t fly.
Just as Laura said, that obscures the debate.
Bingo.

This was my question I posted earlier. I listened to that part of the tape repeatedly to make sure I understood what she was saying. I have the 13.5 years of education that the average American has (from her quote), and I make $12.50 an hour. She stated that people like me shouldn’t have to work like that. Does she mean my wages are crap? Or that an illegal should be doing my job???
StephC on June 1, 2007 at 3:57 PM
StephC, this is a perfect example of why our politicians and government in general, are Ivy League, elitist snobs who have NO CLUE what life is like for the average American. As if people with 1 year of higher education expect to enter the workforce at what $80,000/yr? I know plenty of people with degree’s that make $12-15/hr. This comment from Chavez is absolutely degrading, insulting and demeaning, and gives us insight into what she thinks of “the little people”.

StephC on June 1, 2007 at 4:26 PM
What world is Chavez living in? She says that the illegal alien is not taking jobs – I strongly disagree.
The Illegal Alien is having such an impact that Circuit City can fire 3500 workers, with tenure up to 20 years and making under $15 hour, tell them come backin 10 weeks at a lower wage! Today’s business are using the illegal alien to reduce their cost by reducing wage. They would rather have an illegal alien who is completly at their mercy than a legal citizen trying to make a living.
$12 an hour is a good wage for many looking for work here, and is more than many make. What world is she living in? Perhaps the same one as Bush, ignoring reality to conform to their poltical ambitions, in this case favor to corporate and wealthy intersts at the expense of the nation and citizens.

I am sick and tired of even trying to defend myself from the “racist” label just because I happen to be a “white” male. (Must be all those public entities like the National Association for the Advancement of White People, the nationally accepted and recognized caucasion organization known as “The Race”, the national movement to re-claim Mexico and other countries in central/south America for the white Europeans who colonized them, etc)
I wouldn’t care if the 15 – 20 million illegal aliens were all white, french speakers from Canada who actually wanted to assimilate, didn’t wave Canadian flags at their protests, did not teach their children that the U.S. had “stolen” huge chunks of what is now the North Eastern United States from them, who did not boo U.S. contestants at beauty pagents, did not chant “Osama, Osama” at U.S. – Canada soccer matches, and generally failed to display any kind of hatred for this country, because, despite all that, I would STILL find this bill an abomination. I would still want our national borders secured. I would still believe our security and our soveriegnity were at risk from these illegal “immigrants” regardless of what they looked like or where they came from.
And I would still be majorly ticked off at businesses who put “profit” before obeying the laws, politicians who put “power” before representing their current constituents and pundits who think they win EVERY single political disagreement by labeling your opponents “racists” or “bigots” or “nativists” (OR even vigilantes – Thanks Mr. President)

Hey, Linda!
You wanna know why you get Hate Mail?
You reap what you sow, lady. You start your spiel by accusing your opposition of racism, preemptively claiming victim status, and accusing your opposition of guilt by association because someone evil ALSO holds that opinion…
I guess that last one means that since MECHA is on “her side,” she wants violent revolution to take over California. BURN THE WITCH!
Just because Hitler like Alsation dogs doesn’t make your niece who loves her new puppy a NAZI, although that’s probably the most common logical fallacy EVAR!!!
Linda Chavez comes off like a dishonest, whining, bitter, angry creep. Which is sad, because she’s done good work in her past.

Lyin’ b*tch. She DIDN’t talk about ’10% of the nation being against illegal immigration’ as she said (though many, many more of us are, for the simple fact of the word ‘illegal’). In fact she says ALL people against illegal immigration are racists. Screw you M. Chavez.
Also, I love you Laura! Call me!

I can’t tell, is Linda Chavez retarded or a liar? As far as I can tell, it could go either way.

I hate when anyone uses needed for jobs. Would we have enough people to fill jobs if women were not aborting killing their babies?

So True Wade because their children would be having their own kids now.
When is everyone going to wake up and realize that it is time to apply the Declaration of Independence again.
We are obligated to provide our children with the same if not better than we had it is time to overthrow these elitist assholes.
IT’s called revolution or are you all too afraid?
