Breaking: UK professors’ union votes to boycott Israel

posted at 2:06 pm on May 30, 2007 by Allahpundit

Their own general secretary urged them not to do it and assured the Beeb beforehand that she didn’t think they would. After all, who could properly single out Israel for criticism given the sea of violent political, religious, sexual, and intellectual repression in which that country floats?

No surprise that a Nobel Prize winner knew better. Lesson: never underestimate the anti-semitism or Islamic apologism of the “enlightened,” particularly when it comes with a British accent.

Britain’s University and College Union (UCU), which comprises of university lecturers, voted for a boycott of Israeli academics at its conference in Bournemouth on Thursday evening.

The resolution, passed by 15 8 votes in favor and 99 against , “notes that Israel’s 40-year occupation has seriously damaged the fabric of Palestinian society through annexation, illegal settlement, collective punishment and restriction of movement… deplores the denial of educational rights for Palestinians by invasions, closures, checkpoints, curfews, and shootings and arrests of teachers, lecturers and students.”…

Responding to the boycott, Professor Menachem Kellner, Professor of Jewish Thought at Haifa University, said: “I’m deeply disappointed by the failure of truth and justice at this vote.”…

The people who organized this boycott are working for the forces of evil. They not working for Palestinians, they are working against Israel,” Kellner declared, adding: “If there was something there that would actually help Palestinians, I would say they are honest but dumb. But this is just an attempt to defame and delegitimize Israel.”

“This is a sad day for British academia. The boycott resolution is a badge of dishonor,” Kellner said.

Exit question: They’re having themselves quite a day today, aren’t they?

Anti-semitism: the only permissable form of bigotry.

Enrique on May 30, 2007 at 2:11 PM

They’re Anti-Zionists, not Anti-Semites, duh! Its different, Honest!

Ugh, the antisemitism flowing through the leftist elite of both the US and Europe is disgusting.

Genesis 12, King James version:
“1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

It’s the old “white man’s burden” with a modern twist. Crackpot elites think of Israel as “the West” and it’s neighbors as, well, not. Therefore, everything bad that happens is Israel’s resposibility in the old anti European colonial mold. Palestinians, so this ‘thinking’ goes, can be held resposible for nothing because they are not capable of being resposible – they are simply victims – free of all accountability.

It results in blind hatred toward Israel while it demeans Israel’s neighbors by expecting absolutely nothing from them. It effectively reduces Palestinians to helpless inferiors. It’s bigotry no matter how you slice it. But its perpetrators will swear it isn’t – just ask them – they know what’s good for everyone.

Haven’t you heard? It’s impossible for liberals to be bigots.

One more reason I’m glad that I no longer attend University in the UK. Though, I have to admit Toronto is not much better.

Displacement and cowardice, all rolled up into one. There’s a certain perverse elegance to it all.

It’s easy to lash out at Isreal; cowards know that the “Zionists” won’t hit them back. Can’t say the same for the jihadis, though. That explains why our brave British professors are silent about them.

The “acacemics” in question must be thinking that when Britain finally succumbs to Sharia law, and the islamist gangs start rounding up the political and social leadership of the old, infidel order, they’ll have a Get-Out-of-Jail-Free card to play:

“But look! I voted against Israel!! No! Wait! I can explain –”

I guess they have their own versions of Ward Churchill.

If you see a student, in particular a Muslim student, planning violence in which ever form you chose, it’s not kosher to report such behavior. I suppose a course on body parts identification will be required curriculum at some point.

Didn’t they already do this once, and then have to retract it later, after an outcry from academics from other countries? Or was that some other bozo academic union? Man, if brains were gunpowder. . .

Quite a day? The two are flip sides of the same thing.

In British academe, Ward Churchill is just another respected scholar…

This from a country of people who were all but removed from existence by the last great bastion of antisemites….

Next time, we should wait until after Britain is demolished to step in and save their skin.

Well forest, it’s easy. Liberals don’t believe that non-Westerners have free will. At least, they act that way.

They believe any “non-Westerners” have no control over their actions, no choices, and no responsibilites. All their actions are “effects” from which “causes” must have originated in the Western nations.

And if you disagree, and maybe think that these “non-Westerners” are actually intellectually equal to Western nations, and deserving of the same rights and responsibilities, guess who is racist… It’s a bit confusing, but that seems to be the “proper” worldview.

Some day maybe I’ll be able to think like that. I hope not though.

Anti-semitism: the only permissable form of bigotry.

In the post-modern worldview, weak makes right, and might makes wrong. So as soon as Israel kicked ass in ’67, and lost their underdog status, i.e. became strong (and wrong), we Jews lost our seat on the diversity bus. (The elimination of the quota system in the Ivy’s didn’t hurt either.)

The “acacemics” in question must be thinking that when Britain finally succumbs to Sharia law, and the islamist gangs start rounding up the political and social leadership of the old, infidel order, they’ll have a Get-Out-of-Jail-Free card to play: “But look! I voted against Israel!! No! Wait! I can explain –”

I hope we’ll be able to get some video of those precious moments.

Why am I not shocked?

The English hate Jews now more than any time in modern history. There is little doubt much of this is due to where too many of the elites see the bread being buttered in the future. They need to go get their wives and daughters fitted for burkas now. Why wait.

From the Ha-aretz article from Headlines today:

. . .moral masturbation [as the author terms the boycott], [is] a desperate, delusional, sterile, supremely self-contained form of non-activism that risks nothing even as it changes nothing.”

Boy is that a money quote, and boy does it apply in spades to what the Dems have been doing vis a vis Iraq. Wankers all.
