Video: Michelle talks immigration, racism, & national security on O’Reilly

posted at 9:30 pm on May 29, 2007 by Bryan
Share on Facebook | regular view

The Memorial Day holiday means “Mondays with Michelle & Kirsten” got moved to Tuesday and Kirsten got replaced by Democrat strategist Laura Schwartz. Just for this week.

Bill led off with a quote from Linda Chavez’s Townhall column that unfairly tars opponents of the Bush-Kennedy immigration bill as racists and bigots who just don’t like Mexicans. Here’s her lead paragraph.

Some people just don’t like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.

No amount of hard, empirical evidence to the contrary, and no amount of reasoned argument or appeals to decency and fairness, will convince this small group of Americans — fewer than 10 percent of the general population, at most — otherwise. Unfortunately, among this group is a fair number of Republican members of Congress, almost all influential conservative talk radio hosts, some cable news anchors — most prominently, Lou Dobbs — and a handful of public policy “experts” at organizations such as the Center for Immigration Studies, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, NumbersUSA, in addition to fringe groups like the Minuteman Project.

I generally like Linda Chavez, but that’s a despicable way to treat fellow conservatives. And Lou Dobbs, whose own wife is Mexican-American. Oops.

And it doesn’t begin to address those illegals who aren’t Mexican who manage to run a route from Syria through Mexico into Texas. Oops again.

And it doesn’t take into account people like Eddie, who wrote in tonight from Houston:

I’m a Conservative Republican Mexican-American who opposes the immigration bill and amnesty in any form. Can I be racist against my own heritage? I’ve been called a “coconut” (brown on the outside, white on the inside) by the LULAC national council for opposing their views, so tell me where the racism really lies.

That’s three oopses.

So that’s how the segment started. Michelle and Laura hit their points and the boss brought it all back to reality at the end: It’s the national security, stupid! I’ve edited the clip for brevity.

Technical update: We’re have a glitch or two with this clip, so you may get an error message instead of being able to see it. Time for Plan B–stand by.

Ms. Chavez should know better. Her comments are so disappointing.

Michelle is absolutely correct, this is about national security and the rule of law. Secure the border. Do it now.

Smarmy Laura is usually intolerable. Kristen Powers has all the class. Looks like Miss Smarm took a page out of KP’s book when I watched this segment tonight. I can always watch and listen to KP, even if I disagree. Never Smarmy Laura or Smirky Jane, they are usually so icky. (technical term, icky. Feel free to use.)

Michelle Malkin nailed it. Again. Thank you!

CrimsonFisted on May 29, 2007 at 9:42 PM

It was a great segment and Michelle was strong on fact..

I am tired of the “we took in all the immigrants of the world at the turn of the century” arguement! This isn’t 100 years ago nor are the citizen of the world what they were then…

I have no problem with any immigrant as long as they use the front door…

Pam on May 29, 2007 at 9:44 PM

Congrats Michelle! I think your presence scared Laura as she barely got any of her normal screeching points stated.
Bill did shut her down on one. But she agreed with Michelle more than once...even at the end, as the show surreptitiously closed at the same time Laura loudly proclaims ABSOLUTELY… she agreed with the Sovereign State Security issue as tops in this amnesty bill.
We’re proud of you MM.

Michelle,
In the heat of the discussion, You spoke about the different points of the Illegal Immigration problem, better than I could do even if I had a week to prepare my defense. You defend the false accusations against your views without going on a personal attack yourself. All I can say is Thank You for doing such a great job. When putting forth the facts, You show such strength and at the same time restraint and pure class!

abinitioadinfinitum on May 29, 2007 at 9:46 PM

p.s. I’m noticing a lot of last names in this racist condemnation stuff seem to be from south of the border in origin, or possibly Spain. Anyone else, or is it just me?

shooter on May 29, 2007 at 9:47 PM

It’s not red meat, but it is red herring.

This convoluted political rabel babel – starting with pres. shrub – to champion illegal immigrants is astounding!

Why is this 800 pound gorilla such a non-issue with otherwise intelligent people??

Bravo, MM. It’s the national security, stupid!! (that includes you, pres. shrub!)

*spit

I read Linda Chavez’ article last week and I have to say I was shocked at her invective. It was the kind of thing you would expect to find in an web commenting free-for-all rather than in something written by a national figure.

INC on May 29, 2007 at 10:05 PM

Ms Chavez got it partly right. Some of us do believe illegal immigrants have too many babies (anchor babies, that is) and will dumb down our schools. Some of them are also welfare cheats and some of them are too lazy to learn English. Pretty much the rest of her rant is crap. These beliefs are valid and have nothing to do with racism. However, in the bigger picture, border security is not about any of these things. In a post 9/11 world, how can anyone not believe our border security is of paramount importance? I can’t stand the race-baiting thing being dragged out as a “legitimate” argument for opposing amnesty or lax security at the border. Ms. Chavez should find another subject to publicly comment on that doesn’t make her appear so blatantly ignorant.

Wow, that look. I hope Michelle never gets mad at me.

As a friend of mine said today, when you use the language of your political enemies to attack those who are your allies. you’ve crossed the line.

Since Fredo is a man’s name, I guess I’ll have to dub her Freda Chavez from now on.

Or, as Tony Soprano would say about his mother, “she’s dead to me.”

the small portion of Linda Chavez’s comment, which O’Reilly read, is absolutely correct.

and that’s coming from me, a Hispanic American who lives in Southern New Mexico and who happens to be Republican.

I’ve met a lot of lazy wetbacks who milk the system for everything its worth. all the while my mother works 60 hours a week (struggles unbelievably) and makes just enough not to be given the benefits that fuckin’ illegals get. I’ve met illegal immigrants who have ten kids just for the welfare (of course, they neglect those kids).

Linda Chavez’s comment is correct because the perception is correct. -take it from me, I know. and I’m sick of it

This racist argument is so lame and offensive. South Americans are mixed and unmixed Euro-caucasian, African-American, and Native American/Asian—just like us. Some of them have bad attitudes and habits, just like some of us. Of course we don’t particularly want those, but nevertheless we welcome anyone without a criminal record to get in line and jump through the same hoops everyone else does.
If anything, we’re illegal-ist. We don’t care which border you cross or what race you are, don’t come here illegally.

NellE on May 29, 2007 at 11:34 PM

They think Latinos are freeloaders

If they are here illegally, they are freeloaders

and welfare cheats

If they are here illegally & collect a single penny from any government program, they are indeed cheats.

who are too lazy to learn English.

Many many are, I see it with my own eyes each & every single day of my life here in Texas.

They think Latinos have too many babies,

Too many “anchor babies”, yes

and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools.

When you have to teach the dumb ones english, they slow down everyone, thereby becoming a drain on the rest.

They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent

They are bringing diseases here.

and more prone to criminal behavior

Hence the term “Illegal alien”

They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.

When you bring the entire community here all at once, yes absolutely.

Everything here is fact & she tried to pass i off as some sort of racist attack. Instead of asking why anyone who doesnt want their country invaded is racist, she should ask why, if her cause is so just, she must lie to the public about it.

DwnSouthJukin on May 29, 2007 at 11:34 PM

On another point: It is becoming nigh time that Ms. Malkin give up the BOR. While he was looking (suspiciously) better than he has for some time, BOR is rapidly declining mentally, and MM would be better not propping up the old fool. Tonight for instance he posited that there is a large segment of the right that is racist. He wants to elevate his opposition to illegal immigration as being of a higher, purer strain while painting the rest of us as yahoos. He also wanted to remind the Boss of some supposed faux pas she committed a few months back which, of course, he defended her from. MM had no idea what he was talking about– neither do I. Additionally, he cut his own figure as to how heavy the final hit will be if we go about legalizing all the invaders of our country. I understand his figuring but 40 Million? Why don’t we just work with the ranges out there right now until this hash has been settled?

thegreatbeast on May 29, 2007 at 11:38 PM

Chavez is wrong: Opposition to the illegal alien is not based on racism, but rather on opposition to violation of our laws, lowering wages for American workers (there is no such thing as a job Americans won’t do, the issue is that the Ferengi who offer those jobs won’t pay a decent wage because they can hire an illegal alien at a discount), criminal activity of the illegal alien, and basic security of our borders, just to name a few. It does not matter where the illegal alien comes from. Chavez just doesn’t “get it”.

Michelle, My Hero! Her strong opposition to the illegal alien is so inspiring.

omegaram on May 29, 2007 at 11:46 PM

I also generally like Linda Chavez. On this issue she is simply irrational. When emotions take over, even for smart ones like Linda, it’s out of control. No one could convince her otherwise, unfortunately.

I can ignore her. The impertinence of Messrs Bush 43, Chertoff, Kyl, McCain and McConnell are unpardonable and will have dire consequences.

thegreatbeast on May 29, 2007 at 11:38 PM

Michelle knew exactly what he was talking about – as do most of us. Only, she didn’t want to relive it in the context in which he presented it. I don’t blame her. I thought it was in very bad taste as it was obvious (to me) he was using it to – once again – tell us how he is so maligned in the media and subjected to criticism and attack for his viewpoints. He used the attack on Michelle as a disgusting comparison to the attacks on himself. A point in which I’m becoming very tired of. Mr O is paid very, very well for his viewpoints which more than make up for the “personal attacks” he faces – which only serve to increase his book sales and ratings. The rest of us are not so blessed. Get over it already, Bill, and stop using the offenses others face to shore up support for yourself!

thedecider on May 30, 2007 at 12:08 AM

You don’t control your borders, you don’t have a country.

I wouldn’t care if it were herds of Norwegians or Tongo-ans or New Zealanders or Estonians.

If they crossly illegally, they should be stopped. Arrested. Fined. Deported.

so, did Laura get to say anything? cause it doesn’t show in the clip. I’m sure if she did it was something that would have made me puke (as always), but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have had a chance to talk. Anyone know what she said?

j_ehman on May 30, 2007 at 12:30 AM

If people attack relentlessly a group of Americans:

Some people just don’t like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans

.

This is unfortunately what over the top critics are going to face their rhetoric (and this site as many others are decrying it) echos the past articles in scientific American and even the NYT from the 1880’s to the 1920

Insert Italians, Romanians (Gypsys), Slovaks, Norwegians, Swedes, Poles for Latinos

Most of the “Catholic” European countries entered illegally from Canada through the nickel ferries and by Land. And the Lutheran refugees were welcomed with open arms in the same period.

Its important to note that enforcement has deported 150,000 already this year and is on pace to perhaps reach 400,000.

This bill, creshendos the deportation process to 1.5 million per year.

Non withstanding Lou Dobbs (whose inaccuracies call in question his bias) there are not 4 million spilling over the border every year. (How many people would Mexico have left?)

While the massive enforcement aspects and the fact most illegal immigrants would NOT owe any back taxes based on their income is what the President and people like Chavez are decrying.

Someone like Lou Dobbs knows these facts – knows that most immigration to the US fits the Hispanic pattern, most hispanics have become legal and law abiding citizens whose children by the tens of thousands have spilt their blood on foreign fields for the Flag, knows they don’t owe back taxes

So you reap what you sow

EricPWJohnson on May 30, 2007 at 12:39 AM

Chavez has always been a shill for the amnesty people. When you revert to liberal tactics like calling people who are opposed to amnesty racists, you know you’ve lost the argument. Chavez deserves nothing but our scorn for using such and advancing such a shameless lie.

The fatal flaw in your argument is that you make NO distinction between legal and illegal immigrants, and the inherent differences in their willingness to assimilate.

infidel4life on May 30, 2007 at 12:45 AM

Chavez is trying to lump all Latinos on one side and everyone else on the other.
Isn’t that the very definition of race baiting?

Chavez and the turncoats like her are desperate and are obviously willing to throw the rest of us under the bus.

The best thing to do is just get angry about it and call and write that much more and expose the turncoats for what they are…arrogant and anti America.

thedecider, I still don’t know what you are talking about. Look again at MM’s expression after the BOR’s cryptic comment. There is only one way to describe it: quizzical.

thegreatbeast on May 30, 2007 at 2:17 AM

Given that every single day there are highly educated people and their families sent back to their countries, on their own dime, due to expiration of visas… and those who aren’t on their way home end up in some black hole of justice depending on which God they pray to… it’s a bit sketchy to create a bill which implicitely targets for reward exactly one race of people and/or which border they walked over covertly.

There’s no reason to call it a ‘Comprehensive Immigration Reform’ bill if it’s designed with exactly one race (with blowback into other South American races) in mind. It’s an “Acquiesce to Surprise Guests of Southern American Origin” bill.

Where’s the Indian Amnesty bill? Or the Chinese Amnesty? Or the South African Amnesty? Or the French Amnesty? There’s already laws in place to deal with people from those places. They’re screwing them over every day.

askheaves on May 30, 2007 at 3:28 AM

Why is no one talking about the fact that this country is going to legitimize 12 million or so poor people who will now molest the safety net infrastructure on a legitimate and full time basis? Comprehensive Immigration Reform? How about Incomprehensible instead? We are on the verge of absorbing 12 million poor people plus potentially their relatives. This is insane. Democrats get their voting bloc and Republicans get their cheap labor. We’ve been sold out, period.

Go visit the 22,000 buried in Arlington and ask them their opinion on hispanic assimilation my friend. Ask em how many had a H-1B visa or their parents had a five year work contract?

Your point is valid but this has been the pattern of hispanic immigration for 150 years – little late in the game to pretend to be offended..

Go to China Town in San Francisco, La, New York, Boston, Seattle and demand they speak english

Go see the fact that English is the second language in Hawaii.

Go to upstate PA and demand the Slovak organizations print their material in English, and quit having slovak services in the churches

And I could do the same for the Russian, Poles, Swedes etc

Just because they want to keep their native languages and traditions doesn’t mean they are not or will not be good Americans.

EricPWJohnson on May 30, 2007 at 3:50 AM

Asmodeus

Really, you mean all those companies in the 1880’s to the 1930’s actually went and recruited in Europe all those workers, organized their housing, their transportation and had their Visa’s waiting for them at Ellis, San Francisco, Seattle and Galveston when they arrived as was the law at the time?

And did the American public at the time view immigrants as legal and illegal? Nope

Did they think what Chavez detailed above back then about immigrants? Yep

See the pattern developing? Remember we didn’t have the entitlements today as we did then, but they took the jobs and depresed wages – that they did – big time

EricPWJohnson on May 30, 2007 at 4:02 AM

I got to hear part of this on XM as I was running several urgent errands. From the parts that I heard, it sounded like O’Reilly was arguing against his OWN positions most of the time.

Long past the time that Michelle replace him permanently.

As far as Linda Chavez…… I can’t believe that five, ten, fifteen years ago, I really liked her.

EricPWJohnson on May 30, 2007 at 3:50 AM

On March 25, 1892, the steamship Stuttgart pulled into Baltimore Harbor carrying my great-grandfather and his family, including my 6 month-old grandfather. All indications are that they spoke no English. The census form of 1900 shows that all spoke English by that time, but I know that German was the language spoken in the home.

Compare these European immigrants to the current influx. The wave is so massive now that there is no point in assimilating. There are literally native-born American citizens in Texas, Arizona, and California that do not speak English. That’s the difference, Eric. American culture is in danger of being overwhelmed, including such little things as obeying the law.

Do you get it?

From the clip, it sounds like Bill O’ supports the bill if they control chain immigration. Sad.

Fact is, most of our Miss USA-booing, Hugo Chavez-loving neighbors to the South have no interest in becoming citizens.

This bill will legalize their resident status so they can continue to send billions home while living off the good graces of the American taxpayer.

Linda Chavez can then hire her alien houseguests without any fear of breaking the law.

Thank you for exactly proving my point, the articles 120 years ago didn’t like the foreign speaking dark haired catholics, streaming in as both in real numbers and in % far far greater than this supposed Wave.

For 150 years this WAVE has been here and NOW now we are soo concerned? does it have to do with political parties, the economy, or principal? The rule of law was never really applied ever in this country until Eisenhower ended the Bracero program, and then people who were not from Mexico and Canada have gone through hoops to get here.

This I totally agree on, when’s the last time we had laws equally applied?

EricPWJohnson on May 30, 2007 at 8:13 AM

Everyone say they like Linda Chavez, it just goes to show that a political hack is a political hack. They all come home to roost. Bush pulls the string and she yaks, and pulls out the race card. Whenever you want to stop a debate you pull out the race card, the most powerful card in the deck.
All of us conservatives are racists, anti-enviornment, want the earth to burn up, want people to starve, want the elderly not to have health care, want children to not learn, and repeat again…we are all racists, we hate all other cultures because we are all the same…yak yak yak. I have heard it from the left, now we hear it from the officials we elect.

Hey Bush…how does it feel to be elected by a bunch of racists?

right2bright on May 30, 2007 at 10:15 AM

Linda Chavez and the pro-immirgration people are now using the race card just as the democrats use it.

I grew up in South Texas, married a beautiful Mexican woman and have 2 wonderful childern with her. She comes from a hard working, educated family of 8 children — all college educated, successful people. Most of the Mexican Americans I know – many – are not in favor of this bill as it stands. Oddly enough they don’t want to pay taxes for people who have earned the right to be in our country. Most Mexican Americans I know and have known all my life are quality humans who work hard for their families. It is not about race it is about security and earning a place in our society by means other entering our country illegally.

The republicans who tout this bill and are calling others irresponsible (Chertoff, Bush and Chevez) should be ashamed to stoop to the race baiting comments — utter bullshit….

Eric, you are only fooling yourself, and it doesn’t seem like you’re having a hard time doing it.

Quick, name every government office and business phone system that answers in Swedish? That prints their product information in English and Serbian? Italian? Swahili?

We’re not talking about the melting pot issues of assimilation; we’re talking about an unbalanced invasion of illegals based on an unsecured land border and opportunist businesses taking advantage of virtual slave labor.

Stick to facts, Mr. Chavez.

Jaibones on May 30, 2007 at 10:48 AM

Oh, and the guy-girl comparison:

MM: dream come true trophy wife, makes you want to be a better guy.

LS: last chick left at the party, it’s late and you’re buzzed, one nighter. Too stupid to be around for 24 hours.

(Snort, oink)

Jaibones on May 30, 2007 at 10:54 AM

On March 25, 1892 there was no welfare state, no social security, no forced ER services or even forced education.

When you came here you took care of yourself and if you didn’t assimilate you didn’t survive.

That was then, this is now and this it is different, now we reward migrants for abusing our immigration system, our justice system and for disrespecting all Americans on very a personal level…Love of America.

The sheer numbers when combined with destructive social service tools are a deal breaker by themselves but the not so “in the shadows” and in your face assimilate to me and to hell with the United States outright hate for our home, traditions and culture is way, way too far over the line to tolerate.

We are the Americans and We will decide and if our electives won’t follow our guidance we’ll hire electives who will.
