Hey guys, sure he's received loads of accolades from the left, but everyone misses once in a while.

Why don't you report on their last hero Robert Mugabe, he's got Zimbabwe turned around... ok, bad example.

Hey, we still pretend Cuba isn't a hellhole people are willing to risk their lives to get away from... that's almost like a win, right?

And the fringe supports Communism (see their fliers at the protest/rallies)... and Communism never hurt anyone, right?

I dunno, it just doesn't make a lot of sense. The number of times the anti-war left supports someone who is violent, tyrannical, and thuggishly pro-violence makes it a pattern, doesn't it?

You just know the Democrats are trying to figure out how to do this with the "biased right-wing media" here. Probably with anti-trust action against Fox News. It would be to re-establish "fairness" in the media, before all that pesky dissent got in the way.

Blaise:

<i>"The last Presidential elections in Venezuela gave Chavez a majority….as one guy said above, there were irregularities, but it cannot be said that they would have been enough to change the outcome.</i>

That's because the irregularities which matter most occur <i>before</i> people actually get to cast their votes.

Erosion of Freedom and Liberties...

...Freedom Doctorine
...Politically correct speech enforcement
...Union Card rules change to allow Union thugs to intimidate workers

One drip at a time and then one day, you wake up and you are in Venezuela. The scary thing, is how many years ago this was all so obvious.

One of the most bizarre <a href="http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?sortBy=1&threadID=6463" rel="nofollow">comments</a> I read last night:

Chavez is a conviction politician, who, hand on heart, is doing what he does for the good of the country, rebalancing trivial rights like freedom of expression and due process below obviously more valid rights, such as the rights to security and life. No one who voted for Blair could possibly object.

Good post and I agree with the lessons. I would say though that if you live in a corrupt nation, you are probably much more susceptible to voting for this sort of guy. i.e. If you're not getting your own money anyway... you can easily be bribed with it. So I have some sympathy.

There is a super important lesson here that must not be forgotten...Dash touched on it above...and that is that Chavez is <em>elected</em>. He has actually been elected 3 times. So, the Venezuelans are getting what they have chosen. In a few years they will regret it, but right at the moment, there is a bit of payback happening. Poverty, coruption, greed and exploitation have been endemic in Venezuela, despite the wealth of the country.

That said, they have/had a democracy, and chose a leader who is bit by bit eroding their freedom. They give up their freedom in exchange for things such as subsidized food, cheap gasoline, cheap cars and, to put it bluntly, a bit of vengeance against the upper classes (Caracas is now very dangerous for middle and upper class people. Kidnappings and murders are now the order of the day. The key is that the State is essentially indifferent to such crime, when the victims come from the upper classes. Often the perps are the police).

The opposition is, to an extent, the author of its own misfortune. For example, right now Congress is in a form of "hibernation". Why? Because it delegated all Congressional power to the President for 18 months. Chavez now has the ability to exercise Congressional pówer AND Presidential power without check or balance (how this can be constitutional, in a State that is constitutionally a republic, is beyond me). The reason this happened, however, is that Congress is controlled 100% by "Chavistas" <em>because the opposition boycotted the last Congressional elections</em>.

Historically, the greed for power meant that opposition to Chavez was fragmented...this last time they finally united behind a unified candidate, but it was too little and too late.

The last Presidential elections in Venezuela gave Chavez a majority....as one guy said above, there were irregularities, but it cannot be said that they would have been enough to change the outcome. The reality is that Chavez is able to bribe the voters with their own money, just as he is bribing the government of neighbouring countries.

The lessons are many. First, people must be on their guard against governments who wish to buy their votes with their own money, or who wish to gain power by setting up one part of the population agaonst another.

Another lesson is that people will take the easy way out...this means taking the money over philosophical principles.

Another lesson is that the United States, particularly the democrats, had better start to re-think their rude behaviour to Colombian President Uribe. He is the one solid ally the US has in the region, and the likes of Kennedy, Leahy and Polosi have been disgusting in thie behaviour towards him and the Colombian government. Not only is Colombia and ally of the US, Uribe actually gets along with Chavez. You just don't want to lose him.

Lots more to say, but this has been too long already.

For example, right now Congress is in a form of “hibernation”. Why? Because it delegated all Congressional power to the President for 18 months. Chavez now has the ability to exercise Congressional pówer AND Presidential power without check or balance (how this can be constitutional, in a State that is constitutionally a republic, is beyond me). The reason this happened, however, is that Congress is controlled 100% by “Chavistas” because the opposition boycotted the last Congressional elections.

Historically, the greed for power meant that opposition to Chavez was fragmented…this last time they finally united behind a unified candidate, but it was too little and too late.

The last Presidential elections in Venezuela gave Chavez a majority….as one guy said above, there were irregularities, but it cannot be said that they would have been enough to change the outcome. The reality is that Chavez is able to bribe the voters with their own money, just as he is bribing the government of neighbouring countries.

The lessons are many. First, people must be on their guard against governments who wish to buy their votes with their own money, or who wish to gain power by setting up one part of the population agaonst another.

Another lesson is that people will take the easy way out…this means taking the money over philosophical principles.

You just don’t want to lose him.

Lots more to say, but this has been too long already.

<blockquote>Our fault, duh! To prove his point he cites the US “bombing Al Jazeera”. You know, Bush is out to get them too which is why they can maintain an office in Washington DC heh. We’ll see what the left’s response to this forms into. My guess is relative silence.

There surely must be some cognitive dissonance from the left because of these events in Venezuela. If there is, I think I missed it.

This is pretty representative of the left reaction I've seen:

<blockquote>The causality effect is simple. The US support (through covert CIA operations etc) of anti government forces naturally leads to the crackdown on dissidents by the powers in charge. First the US meddles, then it screams bloody murder when the obvious reaction takes place.</blockquote>

Not much more than a peep from the US media on this, despite their brethren being brutally censored. Check out DU and other places too - they're all in support of Chavez' actions. Further proof that liberals hardly deserve their moniker.

Ugh I swear I hate liberals. Chavez shuts down his TV station and abuses power and the BBC says "Have your say on this subject"

Of course its all BDS

Caroline get a clue, the US is going to get oil from where ever it can because your country is addicted to it. Over 1.5 million barrels a day from Venezuela, Chavez and his policies are empowering the previously down trodden poor, who had no voice in Govt. The rich used the oil money as their own personnal piggy bank, those days are gone, as are exploitation of the natural resources of Venezuela by US corporations. Maybe you need to get your oil from Iran, Caroline.

I'd say it will take roughly a week to have the station beaming from the US, with equipment better than they've ever been able to afford before. I don't agree with any form of censorship so black mark for Chavez but I'd say there's a home at Fox for most of the newly unwaged at Radio Caracas TV ...

"Millions of us saw this coming, millions of us were in despair as we watched the FAKE left wing (really just anti-American, let's be honest) laud this charlatan and quack as a hero"

Americans are too busy watching American Idol, supporting illegal wars, and ignoring fake elections in the US to notice much else inside and outside the country. As for anti-American, Chavez has provided cheap fuel and free healthcare for countless Americans. That's more than the Bush administration has done!

Guess who I am talking about? The people elect a leader who they believe will reestablish traditional values and protect working people. There are naysayers who are immediately attacked for being Un______. The press stops reporting the facts but only promotes the leader's objectives w/o question. When things begin to tank, the leader ids enemies who are out to destroy the country. Those who speak out discover their lives in shambles. Pick any country, the mo fits most leaders. Sad isn't it?
