I am ashamed of the MASSES of clueless Americans who will spend this day grilling, shopping, and installing FOOT WASH STATIONS IN AIRPORTS all the while ignoring the ULTIMATE sacrifice of so many BETTER MEN AND WOMEN.
This day, as I prayerfully remember the fallen, I will go out of my way to actively scorn the ignorant.
I think it was Uncle Jimbo or maybe Matt over at Blackfive that said “Taps” is a tune no soldier wants to hear during the day. I think that sums it up nicely.
One thing I witnessed twice yesterday, and I realize that it comes from the uncomfortable feeling that hearing “Taps” evokes, but it still got stuck in my craw. At both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 at some point in the pre race ceremonies they had a bugler who played “Taps” and once it had ended the crowd cheered. It may just be me, but being a retired Army type it just struck me as wrong. There I said it and got it off my chest and maybe next time if just a couple of people will pause to think about it they won’t cheer. Remain silent, observe a moment of silence for those for whom this day is meant to honor. Let the master of ceremonies move on to the next part of the program, but at a time such as that, after hearing “Taps” in the daylight, silence is the proper response.
Today I’m walking over to the bike path that’s in a the same park as a National cementary.
I’ve got on a patriotic shirt and ballcap-and red sneakers.
I WILL pass the Cementary as I walk in and out of the park.
My baseball cap will be in hand and my walkman off as I remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice!
Perhaps I am nit-picking, but “happy” is not the way a Memorial Day was meant to be marked. There was no harm AT ALL meant by vcferlita, I totally understand, but I think it points up a larger problem in our society. Holiday as “holiday”.
I don’t even think we remember the origins of this day, and we say “happy” out of hand. Then we go shopping and light the grill.
I hate to be the one to nitpick, I really do. But would it have been too much trouble to get a Bugler that could actually play Taps IN TUNE? As beautiful as that was, it was very distracting to hear the Bugler constantly playing flat and missing the transitions. There are recordings of Taps played almost perfectly readily available in the public domain.
Consider re-doing the audio; for me, not only playing Taps, but playing it as well as possible is a sign of respect. Not only be willing to make the memorial, but to make it the best you possibly can.
Other than that, very nice, and a fitting tribute.
Unfortunately Memorial Day is another work day for me but our fallen heros are in my thoughts and have my gratitude on more than one day out of the year.
I’m still looking for at least one picture of our heroes that we honor today, just one. I want to say thank you while looking at his face so I can properly honor his sacrifice.

Go over to Mudville Gazette, Greyhawk has a link to a site put up by the Washington Post and there you can see the faces of the fallen.
For some of us we can never get the images of the faces out of our memory.

Here’s a terrific video for you. I had to bring it over to HotAir, so that I could note that Mrs. is a wow/dolly. IllinoisReview frowns on that sort of piggishness…
For you disheartened Illinois conservatives — are there really any other kind? — Illinois Review is a wonderful web site for the local (ob)scene.
it should bring a tear to your heart, as it swells you up with pride. i am proud of our men and women in uniform. i also hurt for their loss, we should see the heros every single day.
seejanemom, I’m with you. No dig at anyone who used the term here, or otherwise, but it was irritating on Friday when colleagues said “Have a happy Memorial Day”. I didn’t want to lecture and just left thinking “it’s not supposed to be a happy day”.
We have Veterans’ Day and we have Memorial Day. We don’t have a day to honor our serving Soldiers. As Tony737, who should be replicated into the millions for his love of Soldiers and this country, would say “every day s/b a day to honor our serving men and women”. And many do. Many, however, Edwards included, have become complete insensitive brutes who have no idea who keeps them free to be so stupid.
Our servicemen and women are simply superior to all of us. We owe those who serve, and those who have died for us everything.
Today I feel sorry for Cindy Sheehan too. She is so misguided. Casey did not die for nothing! I hope she sees some light before the end of her days.

I apologize for being so serious, but folks, if we don’t instill its TRUE meaning in our children (like we also forget to do at CHRISTMAS!) what will “MEMORIAL” Day come to mean to our children?????
Beautiful tribute, AIRHEADS. Thank you.
And PRAYFUL AND SOLEMN Memorial Day to you all.

Here is one that I found in 10 seconds of Googling.

On Friday I was wishing my students a happy three day weekend, and as a lark, asked them if they knew what Memorial Day was. Almost NONE OF THEM KNEW.
Sad.
(I explained it)
