Heads-up, readers and viewers. Later tonight, we’re rolling out yet another brand spanking new feature. In the top box, we’ll be spotlighting must-read news stories, analysis, and blog posts. Like everything we do around here, these quick-link headlines will be obsessively updated to feed your Hot Air addiction. Many of you have noted that Hot Air has become your home page/first morning read. So we hope you’ll like this latest addition. Loyal viewers of our Hot Air TV shows will continue to get their fix of original programs, which we’ll post in Top Picks. (We’ll keep you posted on schedule changes.) The design change gives us more creative flexibility on the video side for enterprise and in-depth programming–and enhances overall reader usability with fresh, top-of-the-page content throughout the daily news cycle.
Video, commentary, community, laughter, tears, snark, headlines, and the occasional talking robot head. What more could you ask for? We’re full-service, baby. As always, send feedback and tips to tips@hotair.com.
-The Boss
Update (AP): In case it’s not obvious, new headlines will appear at the top of the left-hand column. The rest will cycle towards the lower right.

Ha! Got a kick out of that. I know AP refers to you as “the boss” all the time, but I wasn’t sure you were “in on it”.
RightWinged on May 28, 2007 at 9:14 PM
You’re right, this is my one of my homepages, your signature site is my front page…
I am looking forward these enhancements and will spread the word! Thanks and good luck.
Zorro on May 28, 2007 at 9:20 PM
Looking forward to it.
vcferlita on May 28, 2007 at 9:25 PM
That’ll be a cool feature I’m sure.
That’s not the kind of robots that amuse us, though, but I guess its a start.
lorien1973 on May 28, 2007 at 9:29 PM
Al Gore as guest host?
HerrMorgenholz on May 28, 2007 at 9:37 PM
Later tonight? Geez, boss. You ought to let AP and the team sleep sometime.
Seriously, thanks for creating this wonderful sanctuary for us. Look forward to the new format.
BacaDog on May 28, 2007 at 9:56 PM
Boss… she said boss. heh heh!
Didn’t think Hot Air could get any hotter.
Look forward to the additions.
freebird on May 28, 2007 at 10:02 PM
Addiction, yes.
Hot Air=home page/first morning read…(sometimes the only read), yes!
That about covers it.
Thank you Michelle and everyone at HA!

Far better than becoming an arm of Fox News or Pajamas Media. It’s the future of the media.
Video, commentary, community, laughter, tears, snark, headlines, and the occasional talking robot head
Let me know if Hot Air runs out of snark, Michelle. I have a whole bunch of extra snark, you know, just in case.
Krydor on May 28, 2007 at 10:29 PM
Video, commentary, community, laughter, tears, snark, headlines, and the occasional talking robot head. What more could you ask for?
HOTAiR days, in addition to vacation days :) More time to read and comment…positively addictive. Thanks.
Entelechy on May 28, 2007 at 10:33 PM
It is the future of media
and I welcome it!
BobH on May 28, 2007 at 10:33 PM
Could you keep the RSS the same, and we could check out your drudge style headlines by directly visiting your page? I’m imagining a horribly spammy pajamasmedia style crushing of my feeder (Initially. PJ fixed it.)
Incidentally, if you use Firefox, check out the “RSS ticker” extension. It’s very cool.
Kevin M on May 28, 2007 at 10:41 PM
No worries, the headlines won’t be on RSS. We need the page views.
Allahpundit on May 28, 2007 at 10:43 PM
I take it these new “Headlines” wont be about Rosie ?
William Amos on May 28, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Hawt.
Jaibones on May 28, 2007 at 11:02 PM
But won’t you be hurting Matt Drudge’s feelings?
asc85 on May 28, 2007 at 11:16 PM
You’re a pusher, Michelle, make no mistake about it, shamelessly getting us hooked on this stuff.
thirteen28 on May 28, 2007 at 11:20 PM
Later tonight?
When? I gotta go to bed soon and my fix isn’t in yet.
BacaDog on May 28, 2007 at 11:23 PM
Aww you put me out of sending business. The headlines are already there.
probably why they did it.
William Amos on May 28, 2007 at 11:24 PM
You’re da coolest Boss ever!
infidel4life on May 28, 2007 at 11:25 PM
It’s live!
Michelle on May 28, 2007 at 11:26 PM
And there it is! Awesome! Going to check it out now.
RushBaby on May 28, 2007 at 11:26 PM
Heh.
Looks good. Like the red.
see-dubya on May 28, 2007 at 11:30 PM
good greif PRISON PLANET IS UP THERE ?
I like my news to be you know not made up conspiracies.
William Amos on May 28, 2007 at 11:35 PM
He gave an exclusive statement to Prison Planet. No other way to get it.
Allahpundit on May 28, 2007 at 11:37 PM
oooooooh. Is that an adjective?
Pretty work.
BacaDog on May 28, 2007 at 11:38 PM
Ahh I see the headline change as well as the people with the headlines.
Hate to see the daily Prision planet be up there. Would make Kos seem sane.
William Amos on May 28, 2007 at 11:40 PM
Just a suggestion.
Tab the headlines so they are left aligned. Looks messy and a little hard to follow.
BacaDog on May 28, 2007 at 11:41 PM
Are these headlines and links archived anywhere? I might like to chase one down that I saw the other day but has scrolled off.
see-dubya on May 28, 2007 at 11:51 PM
“Good greif,” indeed. The point isn’t just to highlight news sources that you like. The point is to provide you an array of the most compelling/interesting/amusing/newsworthy/ snort-worthy headlines and links.
Get it?
Michelle on May 28, 2007 at 11:52 PM
Not yet. Boss?
Allahpundit on May 28, 2007 at 11:55 PM
Is there going to be a discussion thread for each story, or an open thread for discussion of all stories at once, or will our reactions to the linked items be private?
RushBaby on May 28, 2007 at 11:56 PM
Brilliant! Simply brilliant!
Thanks MM, HA, and RS!
As if I’m not addicted enough!
Danilo on May 28, 2007 at 11:57 PM
Well, I guess now I have no use for Lucianne.
H.A. is my homepage and first stop as mentioned above. Once I go through all the pages here I check the headlines at Lucianne. HotAir is now my one stop shop for all of my news. It just keeps gettin’ better. Thank you Michelle!
Tony737 on May 29, 2007 at 12:07 AM
Did you see that? Michelle called me “baby”!
mikeyboss on May 29, 2007 at 12:08 AM
Not yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
Michelle on May 29, 2007 at 12:11 AM
I like the headline idea, but a bit of constructive criticism on the format… Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it just takes getting used to, but I think it’s monopolizing too much of the screen. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but if I were designing the feature, I might have a crawl running near the top, maybe below the logo, or maybe a “box” in the right hand column somewhere with a vertical crawl. There are a number of things you could do, it just seems like those external links are taking up a lot of HA real estate IMO.
RightWinged on May 29, 2007 at 12:14 AM
It’s actually only slightly more space than Vent took up. We can reduce the number of links to compress the space, but that means stuff is going to cycle faster, and unless/until we have a separate page where cycled links can migrate to, that means people are going to be missing a lot of stuff.
I’ve actually got at least four more items I could post right now. If I did that, more than half the stuff that was posted an hour ago would already be off the page.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 12:19 AM
Anyone see Miss USA FALL at the Miss Universe pageant? She handled it with poise and grace.
Also, she got boo’d by the Mexico City crowd. Classless!
SouthernGent on May 29, 2007 at 12:24 AM
To be honest, I find it ugly… but I’m just a hack when it comes to web design…
Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on May 29, 2007 at 12:28 AM
Hey Michelle, I hope you enjoyed the holiday? You didn’t have to “come into the office” just for lil’ ol’ us. Don’t get me wrong, thanks for everything you do.
kevcad on May 29, 2007 at 12:28 AM
Yes I understand the reasoning behind it. But have to consider sources also. Prison Planet is like the Jamil Hussien of the Web
But is fun to mock the other side espeically when they act obnpxious and expect to get away with it. Exposing their dirt is sorely needed and I applaud you for it.
besides its not like I have had to go into some swamp leftie websites to try and debunk some but conspiracy they have had going on.
William Amos on May 29, 2007 at 12:39 AM
Interesting addition. Maybe you could even add special picks from weblogs too? Or news that was obtained through weblogs? It could have something to it.
Avi Green on May 29, 2007 at 12:47 AM
Blog picks are included. There are two blog posts linked up there right now, in fact.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 12:48 AM
I agree with the Imperialist Dog who Runs in Canada. It’s not pretty so far. Those pipes have to be aligned in a column for it to look good.

Don’t make me prove it (’cause I prolly can’t), but there’s a fairly eazy fix with either html tables, or js. ‘Twill make you beautiful AND informative! Every person’s dream.
Kevin M on May 29, 2007 at 12:52 AM
I don’t like the format. It’s not easy to read. Can you just have the title then the news source after like:
This is the title. NYT
Thanks! Keep up the good work.
Shack on May 29, 2007 at 12:52 AM
The format looks good from here. And the stories are moving at a good pace, not too fast, not too slow, just right. It would be nice to have two permanent catch all threads for comments on the headline stories. Two because that way when they fill up, you could clear out the thread with the older comments and still have the newer comments.
forged rite on May 29, 2007 at 1:02 AM
Or just move them down to the bottom, below all the blogging, where they’ll stay for a day and then each day be thrown into the Vault with the other archives.
That way if I only check once a day I can scroll to the bottom and see what I’ve missed.
see-dubya on May 29, 2007 at 1:15 AM
Nice idea. I like what you have there right now, but is that a sign of Headlines replacing Vent?
Otherwise if Vent continues (said hopefully) and Headlines are to go under it, it would be clunky visually imho.
But it’s your house, and ya’ll sure go to alot of trouble to make it comfortable for the guests. Appreciate it!
Spirit of 1776 on May 29, 2007 at 1:28 AM
Hey, how about not even providing the producer of the info at all. I for one, only care about the data. We can find out when we get there.
But you might color the links: ‘red’ for ‘I trust them’; ‘blue’ for ‘lying sacks of something’; with varying colors for the ones in between.
That would be a cool edge that you could get over Drudge. But we’d probably have to know who was making the color calls. A ‘red’ from Michelle or Bryan could be dramatically different from a ‘red’ for AP, and maybe even Ian. We’re all conservatives, but are wowed by very different things.
Of course, if it’s just a feed from someone else… forget this comment.
Kevin M on May 29, 2007 at 1:35 AM
Will the daily VENT be above this? I don’t see a VENT (I know it’s the weekend) up there.
Black Adam on May 29, 2007 at 3:28 AM
I’m hoping for a comments thingy.
And as others have said, needs some design changes. It’s all higgledy piggledy. Maybe something like
Source (centered)
—————-
Headline lines
Comment link.
Two collums of that like you have now, but like the source on top instead of the side. Just my 01.5c
- The Cat
(shakes from withdraw)
MirCat on May 29, 2007 at 4:09 AM
Ditto. Very hard to read and esthetically unpleasing. The place for headlines is right or left column. The way Charles does it at LGF is a good model.
wordwarp on May 29, 2007 at 4:30 AM
Interesting to see what others view as headlines. I like.
oakpack on May 29, 2007 at 6:08 AM
And “Vent” will be where??
Viper1 on May 29, 2007 at 6:34 AM
As I mentioned in the post:
Michelle on May 29, 2007 at 7:29 AM
Now HOTAIR really IS like CRACK.
This could be bad…..but in a GOOOOOOOOOOOOD way.
LOVE IT!
But I still need my VENTS…
seejanemom on May 29, 2007 at 7:42 AM
Great idea. I think it needs a picture though (this is a vlog, right?). Right now you go to Hot Air and you just see a whole bunch of headlines. It is not visually appealing.
By the way, was it my imagination, or did Drudge accidentally link to Hot Air around 7:00 this morning in the Nancy Pelosi “I Saw Global Warming” headline? I clicked it on and was linked to HotAir. He quickly corrected the error though.
Usually, Drudge waits until 10:00 a.m. before putting up new posts, so everyone here on the East Coast would be better off checking Hot Air’s headlines in the morning. I wonder if Drudge will start updating the Drudge Report early in the morning in response.
januarius on May 29, 2007 at 8:08 AM
Headlines: YES, great new addition. Love it so far.
Vent: uh, where’d it go?
I NEED MY VENT FRONT AND CENTER!
(my two cents)
Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Mancipium on May 29, 2007 at 8:42 AM
Like the headline idea, really do.
But it’s gonna grow too big for that little space. I predict a whole page for headlines coming up. Maybe a whole new site. Drudge who?
This can take off really big, but IMHO, HotAir.com should have a Hot Air TV show on the front page, not just a link.
In any event, your MM blog and HotAir will remain at the top of my daily browsing. Thanks to the whole team for all you do.
Chuck on May 29, 2007 at 9:09 AM
I repeat: New Hot Air TV shows will be found easily at the Top of Top Picks.
Go there right now. Jihad Watch is available for your viewing pleasure.
And we’re experimenting with different embedded formats. Today ’s show is in nice, big iFilm embed format. Check it out and let us know what you think.
Michelle on May 29, 2007 at 9:18 AM
I preferred seeing the featured daily video at the top, I thought the site was built around the daily video in the beginning.
Maybe put the news headlines under the featured daily video so we don’t have to go searching for it. I can get the headlines from just about any site and I usually do before I head here for your unique content.
Kahuna on May 29, 2007 at 9:19 AM
I want my vent back. I get my headlines from RCP.
moc23 on May 29, 2007 at 9:24 AM
Just as feedback, as a reader I appreciate additions to the site.
But I would suggest that Vent stay Front-Center b/c it is your unique factor. That and AP’s blogging of course. Without doing a survey here:), I would guess that those are the two big draws and the two big identification factors to your brand name. For myself, Vent makes it a first stop in the morning, and AP makes it the homepage.
So unless you are planning for headlines to become the dominant feature, I’d move them to a secondary role and keep your brand identification on the front page. To borrow a EH-type analogy, otherwise it’s like putting a WR in the QB slot.
Spirit of 1776 on May 29, 2007 at 9:40 AM
You guys know there’s a new Vent at the top of this very column as we speak, right? Bryan even marked it in green font to make it extra eyecatching.
No one’s taken Vent away. You have to move your eyes literally about five degrees down and to the left to find it.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 9:43 AM
Yep, watched it first thing this am.
Spirit of 1776 on May 29, 2007 at 9:49 AM
The layout is really jarring to the eyes. I love every other aspect of this implementation.
Have you considered an AJAX solution to the layout?
unamused on May 29, 2007 at 9:52 AM
We’re tweaking the layout. We may go to a single column all the way across, switch the red font to black, remove the sources, etc. Some combination thereof.
Thanks for the praise, though. Nice to know someone likes it!
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 9:56 AM
iFilm stinks.
And DON’T put Vent back front-and-center. Once the Vent of the day is played by the reader, that screen real estate is wasted space. Also, I disagree with other comments. This site is most certainly NOT about Vent. Vent is the cherry on top, not the sundae. Focusing on what drives the blogosphere–headlines/events in the world–is a brilliant idea and one worthy of the prized top cell.
You may want to include some cgi that performs a sort of dig algorithm on the headlines clicked. You could use this to auto-create or “nominate” any given story for use as a HotAir thread. You could have an administrative view of the news links that would show Allahp and Bryan the most clicked. This would allow them more time for writing commentary and less time searching for stories.
Forgive me, I write web-based software for a living. This stuff excites me.
unamused on May 29, 2007 at 9:58 AM
Thanks, dude. Much appreciated.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 10:00 AM
I like the headlines… but I like the VENT front and center and ON TOP. Headlines off to the side ala LGF would be perfect.
If you leave the vent on the “top pics” column… is it a sticky (ie it stays on top until a new one is posted) or does it scroll down as you add other non-video posts? (meaning we have to search for it if we miss it.. Hint: that is bad)
BadBrad on May 29, 2007 at 10:03 AM
Well, I’m going to have to part company with all this fawning over “The Boss,” long enough to quibble with the change.
If you’re going to feature a new clip every day, it’s not “wasted real estate,” or whatever someone called it, any more than is putting up a dozen headlines, half of which I might read, and most of which I can get elsewhere. I don’t come here for them, I come here for the clip (as does most of you reading this right now). If everybody else is fine fixing what ain’t broke, so be it. But if I have to scroll down to to find the daily clip, that’s five seconds of my life I’ll never get back. (sigh!)
manwithblackhat on May 29, 2007 at 10:09 AM
I like the idea, but its too top and center for me. I can get headlines anywhere. I come here for the blog really. News is fine, but AP/Bryan’s take on what happens is what’s really interesting to me.
I hardly ever watch the vent videos there; they simply blended into the content too well and didn’t stand out so I always forgot to click the links to watch them. I think that should be improved and moved back up top.
lorien1973 on May 29, 2007 at 10:11 AM

Michelle on May 29, 2007 at 10:13 AM
Hey, you asked for feedback.
Spirit of 1776 on May 29, 2007 at 10:15 AM
Well, yeah, major news headlines. But that’s not what all of these are. Some are quirkier, some are science news, and some are blogs.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 10:15 AM
Well, madame, and to think I was merely looking forward to seeing your report every day.
manwithblackhat on May 29, 2007 at 10:23 AM
Meant as gentle snark, sir.
Michelle on May 29, 2007 at 10:28 AM
One of the things I love most about this site is its snark. That gave me a really good laugh.
The change jarred me at first, but I think it’s a good one. HotAir will be even more of a one-stop news source now. Maybe the format of the headlines isn’t perfect yet based on other comments (and I’m not enough of a visual artist to suggest how to make it better), but I think the change is a plus.
flutejpl on May 29, 2007 at 10:32 AM
As was mine, madame.
(Oh, rats, I cannot find the word “snark” in any major dictionary. Maybe it’s Tagalog for something…)
manwithblackhat on May 29, 2007 at 10:38 AM
Finally, a reason to delete Drudge as a Favorite!
sailingdutchman on May 29, 2007 at 10:48 AM
This is IMPORTANT Hot Air, please notice shouting and pay attention.
In advertising, it’s an article of faith people notice items on the left first.
The way you have headlines set up is awkward… with the name of media source to the left… put that on the right and the headline on the left!
Otherwise, awesome, carry on.
Christoph on May 29, 2007 at 11:03 AM
Here’s my gentle snark:
Vote for comprehensive blog reform!
Spirit of 1776 on May 29, 2007 at 11:17 AM
Yeah, we’re considering that.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 11:19 AM
Okay, kids, it took awhile, but I found it. “Snark” has several meanings…
One is from an American male rite-of-passage known as “snark hunting” — or “snipe hunting” as it is known in the South — where the neophyte is led into the dark woods with a burlap sack and is instructed to wait until his colleagues can steer the unsuspecting animal his way. Of course, this is merely a ruse, and the poor fellow is left to fend for himself in the dark while “holding the bag.”
This name is also derived from a silly poem by Lewis Carroll entitled “The Hunting of the Snark,” involving a similar theme.
The term is also used to describe “a ridiculously pedestrian form of unconscious, unintentionally sarcastic narrative or banter,” such as that of Curly of The Three Stooges, or that really funny guy on Fox News’ “Red Eye.”
So, taking everything into account, it seems to me that our heroine meant to announce that her pet snark had a litter of cute little snarklings, and she wants to give them away.
She could have just said that in the first place.
manwithblackhat on May 29, 2007 at 11:47 AM
The one stop shopping will be a benefit.
Agreed that it shouldn’t look too much like drudge. That is the first thing I thought this am when I saw the new look. I found the HA vent vid easy enough, but maybe something more than just green text?
There was a unique attractiveness to the vent image frame on top of HA….Text is the theme on most blogs, stay unique somehow.
Think OUTSIDE the box, be pathfinders again. Maybe a use of familiar HA icons for daily ‘vents’? A 40% screened image? re-look the space for an all new concept….You still have the top right column currently used for tips and searching that could be elsewhere/ lower.
Good luck. ( did I mention “don’t get to drudge-ey”?)
shooter on May 29, 2007 at 12:15 PM
Why not slide the headlines to the right side of the screen where the advertisements are. Knock those down. To the left of the headlines put up the Vent. so it is still one of the first things you see.
Right now the entire screen (besides the hotair logo) is filled with headlines when you first go to hotair.com. That is not visually appealing.
I like having the source (e.g. LGF, Washington Times) next to the headline.
The headlines are a great addition, especially considering Drudge on the Left Coast never updates his in the morning until about 10:00 Eastern time when he wakes up. I did notice this morning he updated his much earlier than usual.
januarius on May 29, 2007 at 12:23 PM
What do you think MM pays me in, magic beans? The ads are untouchable.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 12:28 PM
Nonono! You’ve got it all wrong. You need to find a way to beam it directly to the brain, or on those flat bendie TV screens on a t-shirt, or like something I mix into my morning coffee like in Aeon Flux (scratch that I don’t drink coffee). Or have a series of micro shutters on a spot light and have it play on the clouds, take that Bat Signal! Or . . .
- The Cat
MirCat on May 29, 2007 at 12:38 PM
But the blogroll isn’t, right? You could carve out two inches over there for a thumbnail pic labeled TODAY’S HOT AIR TV. It gets eyeballs straying near your premium ad spot, too.
Alternatively, one line of text between the headlines and the blog could contain a link:
Although I like the idea of pictures better–I’m a visual guy. Just suggestions. I’m a big fan already.
see-dubya on May 29, 2007 at 12:53 PM
Does this mean the headlines replace Michelle’s VideoBlog entry?
donsingleton on May 29, 2007 at 12:54 PM
Sigh. Today’s Vent is right above this very post in the Top Picks column. Vent is continuing just as it always did. The only difference is that it’s moved down and to the left three or four inches on your screen.
Look for the green “Jihad Watch” font.
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 12:59 PM
It would be great if Hot Air would post when Michelle will be on TV a day or two in advance, especially if she is hosting.
An alternative would be for a link to see her air time after the show has been completed if we miss it.
omegaram on May 29, 2007 at 12:59 PM
How about adding a headlines comments link? I like to read the readers comments as much as the news itself.
That story about Hillary speaking against an ownership society is scary stuff.
This site is great. I check it several times a day. And now with the headlines it will be even more often. Another great site is lucianne.com. But this is better because of the video feeds and the layout is easier on the eyes.
My only other suggestion would be to add a zoom feature to the vent video. My eyes ain’t what they used to be.
Thank you Allah and the Boss!
pappy on May 29, 2007 at 1:02 PM
Yeah, I think that’d be cool too. If we get a traffic spike from the headlines, we’ll probably do it eventually. And if we don’t get a traffic spike I’ll be looking for work, so it won’t matter! Problem solved!
Allahpundit on May 29, 2007 at 1:03 PM
Reminds me of calls I used to get when I worked tech support.
Caller: “My installation instructions start with step 6″
MirCat: “Turn the page over sir.”
I would get that call no less then twice daily.

Okay, very funny Michelle — but please do NOT be so quick to pooh-pooh this comment/input. I am currently redesigning the web-based databases at my place of employment. We are “re-doing” everything using Adobe/Macromedia’s RIA approach (Rich Internet Applications using Adobe Flex – which is sort of akin to the more common AJAX approach to building websites). Not only does this eliminate most of the annoying and time-consuming page re-loads, but we have also managed to eliminate A LOT of the scrolling formerly required to navigate through our sites. The response from the user community has been VERY positive.
Besides, scrolling is EVIL, ya’ know.
(Just my 2 cents.)

Thanks for all you do
