Video: Sessions expects bipartisan support for drawdown in September

Sessions is no Arlen Specter/Olympia Snowe centrist Republican so this is worth noting. Reducing the number of troops isn’t the same as withdrawal, of course, and Sessions was careful to say that much will depend on what Petraeus says in his progress report, but with elections coming up Congress is clearly inching towards the exit whether or not Bush is serious about joining them or Iraqis think it’s a good idea.
The clip picks up with Schieffer having just finished repeating what Mitch McConnell said to reporters on Friday, that “the handwriting is on the wall that we are going in a different direction in the fall, and I expect the president to lead it.” It’s been edited for brevity.

I think Bush is using this time to hurt those who threaten Iraq. Specifically Al Queda and Sadr. If he can weaken them enough he levels the feild for the Iraqis to stand up to them.
Its a short term attempt to bloody the enemy. We cant stay in Iraq indefinately but we can hurt our foes. If we weaken the insurgency enough it will draw out the civil war that is too follow. It took North Veitnam 3 years or so to overcome the South. Iran supporing the Shiia and Syria and Al Queda supporting the Sunnis means no one has the military power to hold onto Iran.
The problem is in the north with the Kurds. If we leave there is every chance that Turkey will step in or at least attack the kurds.
The US military will have to regroup and focus on Al Queda. The WOT has always been bigger than just Iraq.

Something as extraordinary as say progress?
Something like the Iraqi government hitting benchmarks and making a fullvcourt press to the American people/media
Something like even the most liberal of warbloggers agreeing that leaving would be diasterous and lead to ethnic cleansing?
I cannot yet read Sadr’s coming role in all this suffice to say if he has Iranian handlers a sure sign would be the continnued liquidation of his “rogue” followers. Stripped of capos he is a puppet that has to make nice or face a death via Sunni.

Sessions is speaking more in terms of the present state of our military forces (third and fourth rotations) than anything else. He is also speaking to the Iraqi government and what is generally viewed as being ineffective.
What is mystifying is how he lacks consideration of the regional aspects of this conflict. Does he seriously believe that Syria, Iran, and Saudi Arabia are simply going to “play nice” as we draw down?
Sessions was a disappointment today in his lacking of a usually clear headedness.

My thought is we don’t want our men and women on the ground in Iraq if and when the bombs start hitting Irans nuke sites.

I like and respect Sessions a lot, but he has no business saying this.
Congress is still trying to make itself the Commander-in-Chief of the war.
Neither the enemy nor the President and the Pentagon will obey “Gen.” Sessions.
I pity the man if he’s hanging his re-election on the “good manners” and cooperation of Al Queda.
