We can't afford to go to Mars or the moon just for the science, or just for the experience. But we could go back to the moon for profit. Helium 3 is pletiful there, and it is very valuable for nuclear fusion here on Earth. A lunar colony could actually become profitable extracting He3, not to mention other valuable minerals (diamonds possibly, rare metals)...and there's plenty of oxygen there in the form of oxides.

All it would take is a kickstart and possibly some delayed corporate tax incentives.

You need to have the species' seed spread as far as possible, as fast as we can, in case something like what hit the dinoaurs is in the neighborhood in the relatively near future.

Putting all your ova in one planetary basket is asking for trouble.

But we seem more prone to gleefully smashing one another's nests than planning with much universal wisdom.

We should remember that Mother Nature's got a comet or an asteroid up one of her Kali sleeves.

And she wouldn't mind a 6th Great Extinction.

(Having been just fine with the past 5.)

We should have already established a station the moon. Too much redistribution of wealth, not enough science.

I could never vote for a Klintonoid, he's been touched by the dark side.

Just another thing Richardson would love to raise taxes for... or should I say raise everything BUT the taxes... user fees, etc.

We have enough to spend on Earth than to waste cash on space. The only space spending we should be undertaking is a military presence there.

come on man, if we could do that we wouldn't be paying this kind of money for gas.

I think we should launch anaerobic bacteria to Mars. Since they spew oxygen during life; it's a great way to oxygenate the planet. You gotta think that giving them something to live in wouldn't be too difficult too. After a little testing, we could figure out what can and cannot live there. And start terraforming it very slowly. It's the most likely candidate right?

We fianally need a logical approach to space.
1. Get some more manned space stations up in LEO.
2. Put some more manned space stations up in geo-synch orbits.
3. Set up a manned moon base.
4. Set up large space stations at L4, L5, or on an asteroid.
5. Go to Mars.
Taking the glory route to Mars will just get us more of the "what'll we do now" experience that we had with the moon.
