Video: Corzine’s “I should be dead” PSA

posted at 1:50 pm on May 26, 2007 by Allahpundit

Not to quibble, but why should he be dead? He had some good doctors with some powerful technology and they all did their jobs. Doesn’t he mean to say, “I should be well, but I was too stupid to fasten my seatbelt so now I have to hobble around on crutches”?

Good ad otherwise, though.

Blowback

Good on him for doing it.

They had a Senate race in Nebraska a long time ago and one of the candidates took major criticism because he did a campaign ad in which he was driving his van, but didn’t have a seatbelt on. He lost but I don’t think the ad itself was the reason.

Bradky on May 26, 2007 at 1:54 PM

Hindsight is 20/20. Don’t they have seatbelt laws in New Jersey, Governor?

It’s a good PSA. Maybe he’ll get some sympathy votes at the next election to boot…

President Bush is underfire because in the past week or so an ABC news camera caught him driving with no seat belt on.

William Amos on May 26, 2007 at 1:57 PM

I’d rather have seen a “I shouldn’t have been elected” public service announcement.

gmoonster on May 26, 2007 at 2:01 PM

Could you imagine if that had happened to a Republican politician, someone like McCain, or Guliani? How many death wishes would be coming from Huffington Post, DU, and Kos?

Capitalist Infidel on May 26, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Not to quibble, but why should he be dead?

That’s a dumb question to ask. If you don’t know then…

Opinionnation on May 26, 2007 at 2:19 PM

Stupidity followed by an epiphany. The proverbial 2×4 in the face will always get your attention.

Shouldn’t he also have mentioned that driving at 97 miles per hour wasn’t such a good idea either?

fogw on May 26, 2007 at 2:35 PM

The Imus blowback never ends.

JammieWearingFool on May 26, 2007 at 3:04 PM

Actually, Corzine wasn’t driving, a New Jersey State Trooper was.
Apparently, New Jersey State Troopers are above the law. I know, because I used to live in Jersey and I’ve seen these guys driving on the highways. The PSA is disingenuous in my view, when Corzine got out of the hospital, a Trooper that was driving Corzine was clocked at 70 in a 55 speed zone. Hypocracy should be Jon Corzine’s middle name, he’s a typical campaign promising to reduce-your-property-taxes politician. Read the links to see why New Jersey’s State Motto should be changed to Corzine and Taxes, Perfect Together.

His greatest threat to his life and to the public is letting Jersey Troopers drive him around. At least Bush drives himself around his property, seat belt or not is not the question. It’s the speed.

Kini on May 26, 2007 at 3:08 PM

I can’t believe their are people left pig-headed enough not to wear their seat belts.

Shouldn’t he also have mentioned that driving at 97 miles per hour wasn’t such a good idea either?

I think it was the cell phone conversation rather then the speed. If I’m driving that fast I sure as hell let the voice mail pick up the call.

liquidflorian on May 26, 2007 at 3:15 PM

Shoulda Coulda… just another democrat who couldn’t get it done.

But now that he got his state of the art surgery to keep him going, he’ll help the Dems gut the health care system, so that the rest of us won’t be able to. He knows with his money he’ll get what ever he needs, but damn the little guy!

Bob on May 26, 2007 at 3:18 PM

Actually he was stupid to have a New Jersey State Trooper do the driving.

Kini on May 26, 2007 at 3:23 PM

Tough room!

baldilocks on May 26, 2007 at 3:28 PM

You’re kidding, right? Corzine was a passenger.

If I’m driving that fast I sure as hell let the voice mail pick up the call.

Like Corzine’s driver, if you’re driving that fast you’re endangering the lives of the rest of us on the road, and then there’s that little breaking the law thingy.

Oh, poor Mr. Rich Liberal.

Wasn’t he on his way to get to a press conference to get some TV time?

So literally, one of the most dangerous places is to be between Dr. Corzine and a TV camera. If he was serious, he would not allow ANYONE to drive on the NJT, it is survival of the fittest the closer you get to NYC. The craziest driving I have ever seen.

benrand on May 26, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Oh, poor Mr. Rich Liberal.

I didn’t get the sense that he was complaining, really…

freakagriep on May 26, 2007 at 3:51 PM

No, he was on his way to the meeting between Imus and the Rutgers womens BB team.

While I dislike seat belt laws I buckle up every time. It’s a good ad and everyone needs to be reminded just how fragile life and health is. I would have rather the message included how speeding kills however. Am I the only one who shakes his head when someone blasts past them going way to fast only to find myself sitting right next to them at the next stoplight?

Buzzy on May 26, 2007 at 5:09 PM

Governor Corzine: “…I broke 15 bones in 18 places.”

Johnny, Johnny. Perhaps the Joisey troopers are only slightly more careless than your speech writers.

Other than that, Hazzah. Good PSA.

Tuning Spork on May 26, 2007 at 5:41 PM

uhh spork .. so he broke saaay his femur in 2 places… 1 bone 2 places…

and he won’t touch the speeding because that would be admitting he endangered others lives on camera and for the record.

frreal on May 26, 2007 at 6:41 PM

Gotcha frreal. My bad.

Tuning Spork on May 26, 2007 at 6:57 PM

Actually he was stupid to have a New Jersey State Trooper do the driving.

Allowing New Jersey State troopers to do anything, including continue to draw paychecks, is stupid. That lot were so obnoxious that NOPD and FEMA kicked them out of the Katrina aftermath cleanup.

They then proceeded to drive back the NJ at 80+ mph, blue lights flashing … more than one state police org. threatened to jail the lot if they ever returned.

Kristopher on May 26, 2007 at 6:58 PM

I go with curmugeons up there. On his instructions, the vehicle was waaaaaaaay over the speed limit for a non-emergency purpose. What would have happened if the other two vehicles had been seriously clipped resulting in a three-car pile up? What if the drivers/passengers in the other vehicles had their seat belts on, but their vehicles were unexpectedly hit by an oncoming speeder, then they swerved and flipped and were crushed?
So the message is: be sure to buckle up before you grossly break the speed limit?
The guy is doing a sentimental, victim ad for cover for the egrecious mis-use of government office. Sorry-O, but South Park hit the Liberal nail on the head with Cartman’s “By the time you see this ad, I’ll be dead.”

naliaka on May 26, 2007 at 7:04 PM

Was the guy really doing 97? If so I have to admit thats a bit over the top but you guys are way to hung up on the speed thing. I know nothing about traffic in Jersey but I promise you that on I-95 around Miami there are times you are in greater danger at the speed limit than you are at 15 over. I’ve had similar experiences in Tampa and Atlanta. And getting unwound on a few of the miles and miles of nothing along I-10 was a blast. I swear I kept it under 120 though.:-)

conservativecaveman on May 26, 2007 at 10:05 PM

Was the guy really doing 97?

These idjits managed to do it all at once. Excessive speed, no seatbelts, driving while distracted ( cellphone ) … if they had been mere citizens, I bet they would have probably failed a DUII test as well.

Kristopher on May 26, 2007 at 11:06 PM

Actually, if I remember correctly, they were going 91, not 97. The difference is only notable for a semantics discussion, though.

Let’s face it: if he weren’t the governor, he would be dead. He was with State Police at the time, so the response to his accident was immediate rather than delayed by a number of critical minutes for help to get to a remote area. As such, I think the use of the phrase “I should be dead” is perfectly accurate.

Furthermore, one can technically break 15 bones in 18 places. He broke a few of his bones twice.

Let’s not dump on him too much. He made a costly mistake; who hasn’t? The only difference is that his bit him really hard. I’ve met him and performed for him several times, and he is a nice, well-intentioned man. I don’t think too much of his politics, but the ad shows him for who he is 100%. Good PSA.
