Iraq slapfight: McCain plays the chickenhawk card on Obama, sort of

The “sort of” is there because Obama’s not a hawk, of course, but the basic chickenhawk faux logic abides: only a battle-tested veteran has the military acumen to know what the best course is in Iraq. And since there’s only one battle-tested veteran among all six of the major candidates (or seven if you count Fred!), we know who that must mean.

I told you yesterday that the chickenhawk thing was starting to boomerang on the left. And here we are:

“While Senator Obama’s two years in the U.S. Senate certainly entitle him to vote against funding our troops, my service and experience combined with conversations with military leaders on the ground in Iraq lead me to believe that we must give this new strategy a chance to succeed because the consequences of failure would be catastrophic to our nation’s security.

“By the way, Senator Obama, it’s a ‘flak’ jacket, not a ‘flack’ jacket.”

Obama must be kicking whichever moron aide of his misspelled “flak.” It’s a perfect opening to needle him particularly for his youth and lack of experience and the Dems generally for their perceived ignorance of and antipathy to military culture.

Mind you, this is but one of three hard shots he’s taken at Obama in the past 16 hours or so. Drudge is leading right now with the crack from his staffer that Barry O “wouldn’t know the difference between an RPG and a bong,” an obvious reference to his youthful drug use. But check out J-Mac’s original statement from last night that prompted Obama’s “flack jacket” response:

“This vote may win favor with MoveOn and liberal primary voters, but it’s the equivalent of waving a white flag to al Qaeda.”

Expect the next round to involve Obama reminding McCain that he had enough military acumen to oppose this “disastrous war” before it began, with McCain reminding him in return that he’s repeatedly criticized Bush’s conduct of the war and sniping that it’s easy to say how one would have voted in 2002 when one didn’t have to actually vote.

Mitt’s getting in his shots too. Attacking the Democrats is an easy way for him and McCain to gin up publicity and appeal to a base that’s suspicious of their conservative bona fides. I’m only surprised Rudy hasn’t come out swinging too. I guess the frontrunner doesn’t need to.

Update: The media scrambles quickly to Obama’s side.

A chick fight between two men LEAST qualified to be our President. Goodeeee.

tickleddragon on May 25, 2007 at 3:31 PM

Nice reporting tho, Allah. That wasn’t meant as a slap at the thread. :)

tickleddragon on May 25, 2007 at 3:32 PM

Its not spelled “flak” or “flack”.

Its “f-l-a-k-e”.

Use it in a sentence: “Obama bin tokin’ is a flake.”

Labamigo on May 25, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Actually it’s been spelled Body Armor for years.

Stephen M on May 25, 2007 at 3:36 PM

Actually McCain does need to wear a “flack” jacket. He takes so much of it from just about everyone that he does need *some* protection.

auspatriotman on May 25, 2007 at 3:44 PM

I’m not a big McCain fan, but I sure do like the taste of liberal blood in the water. Conservatives have been taking a beating so long now that I’d forgotten how sweet it is.

natesnake on May 25, 2007 at 3:46 PM

Depending how conditions on the ground evolve in the next several months, Hillary and Obama are going to have a tough time squaring that vote at a later date.

natesnake on May 25, 2007 at 3:49 PM

the two people obama and hillary who very well could be president..are actually, full blood traitors. No ifs ands or buts. there is no middle ground there is nothing but treachery.

They are soldiers in the army of evil. I don’t back down one bit on that.

natesnake on May 25, 2007 at 3:46 PM

I totally agree. That felt sweet. President Bush would never do anything like that to liberals, hence his 30% approval rating.

To say McCain pulled a “chickenhawk” doesn’t quite make sense in this case. Obama is a chicken but he is not a hawk. He just voted to surrender to Al Qaeda.

Update: The media scrambles quickly to Obama’s side.

I responded in the comments pointing out that wikipeda has it as FLAK…any bets on if my commentshows up?

liberrocky on May 25, 2007 at 4:04 PM

And Dan Quayle was branded an idiot because he used an alternative but accepted spelling for ‘potato’.

Labamigo on May 25, 2007 at 4:15 PM

Consulting a dictionary, it appears that one can use either flack or flak.

Nonsense. This was just on Jeopardy last week. It’s an acronym for Flieger-Abwehr Kanone. There’s no “c” in there.

Tanya on May 25, 2007 at 4:33 PM

I think McCain is wrong, Barry would definitely know if something is, or is not, a bong even while not recognizing it as an RPG. Give the man some credit, at least.

corbettw on May 25, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Weak.

This is seriously the best you guys can do; Obama shouldn’t be President because:

He smoked pot in college.
He smokes cigarettes now.
His estranged father was a Muslim.
He can’t spell flak.

Wow…Just wow…Damning…

I know you can do better, I’ve seen you do better. Where is Rove? Where are the swift boaters? Make it interesting…

JaHerer22 on May 25, 2007 at 4:54 PM

JaHerer22 on May 25, 2007 at 4:54 PM

True. We should concentrate on serious things like old DUI arrests or “My Pet Goat.”

Slublog on May 25, 2007 at 5:12 PM

Obama shouldn’t be President because:

He’s full of liberal fatuous nonsense.

jdpaz on May 25, 2007 at 5:23 PM

My only quibble with your take on the matter, A.P., is the terminology.

Libs like to play the “chickenhawk” argument. When it rebounds back at them, as it did so devastatingly in this instance, it’s the “chickensh*t” argument.

Spurius Ligustinus on May 25, 2007 at 5:53 PM

‘Flack jacket’: press agents surrounding him to protect him from criticism?

VerbumSap on May 25, 2007 at 5:59 PM

“Perceived”? Heh.

ReubenJCogburn on May 25, 2007 at 6:01 PM

Every once in a while you gotta just love McCain. (It’s that other 90% of the time that you have to worry about.) I wish President Bush would occasionally slip out of his gentlemanly mode and ‘Speak Truth to Power the incompetent’ like McCain does.

LegendHasIt on May 25, 2007 at 7:46 PM

Any one on the kook lefty blogs called McCain a racist yet?

JaHerer22 on May 25, 2007 at 4:54 PM

Channel honora much?

I do disagree with McCain’s aide though. He might not be able to spell RPG, but I’m sure Barry would know a bong when he sees one.

JaHerer22 on May 25, 2007 at 4:54 PM

A troll scout! Regards to you. (We’ve so missed honora’s vapidity so you’ll just have to do.)

It’s not interesting yet ’cause there are lots of targets. Wait till the primaries are finished. Then we can really get going. Libs need to find a new evil capitalist though, as Haliburton has moved on to greener pastures in the peace loving and tolerant Middle East. You guys should go after Starbucks. I here the owner’s rich.

Mojave Mark on May 25, 2007 at 9:04 PM

I enjoyed John McCain’s slam on Barack Obama. I have been concerned that Obama is being with far too much respect. An Obama Presidency would court disaster, as his left wing policy views would if implemented result in more government and less economic vitality, and his foreign policy views would entail Jimmy Carter-type weakness and appeasement as the order of the day. In contrast, one can disagree with John McCain on a number of specific issues (e.g., immigration, campaign financing), but he is a patriot war hero who understands the war with the radical Islamists, who is staunchly pro-troops amd pro-Iraq War, who is a fiscal conservative, who is pro-judicial strict constructionists and who is pro-life.

Phil Byler on May 25, 2007 at 9:07 PM

Barack tries to please.

But we need a commander-in-chief.

Not an appeaser-in-fact

The war against the Jihad has only begun.

Obama doesn’t have the imagination or historical sense to fight it.

Let McCain expose B.O.’s silly little flaws.

But it is his major lack that I care about.

A pre-9/11 man.

profitsbeard on May 25, 2007 at 10:45 PM

Next thing we’ll hear is that “Barack” is a valid spelling for military housing.

The Monster on May 25, 2007 at 11:04 PM

They waste their time with obama, he won’t win the presidency. I’m not sure how the hell obama thinks he is presidential material. He doesn’t have much to show for himself politically.

Highrise on May 26, 2007 at 12:35 AM

I can’t wait to watch the magic negros campaign self destruct. Just like hillary’s is. Whose left? Richardson.

csdeven on May 26, 2007 at 12:39 AM

Where is Rove?

JaHerer22 on May 25, 2007 at 4:54 PM

I know where Rove is JaHerer2. Today I was a guest at a graduation in San Diego. As I exist, and as can be proven by hundreds of attendants, the keynote speaker, some oprative from Wash. D.C. said that he attends joint dinners with liberals/conservatives, i.e. sometimes with Karl Rove, the current president of the U.S. He also mentioned Nixon and how these graduates don’t even know who he was. The San Diego audience didn’t clap, didn’t boo – it just sat there mistified. Way to go!

FLAK – here.

Those in the MSM are mostly flacks.

Entelechy on May 26, 2007 at 12:45 AM

Obama’s got NOTHING.

He’s a dufus and involved in a growing scandle in Illinois that the Obama-luvin’ MSM can’t quite quiet down.

He was an ignorant gasbag as an Illinois legislature. He’s a DO NOTHING moron as a US Senator. He’s an incompetent liberal TURD as well as an ignorant Daley-Chicago machine TOADIE. But, he IS an anti-war liberal. Which also makes him a TRAITOR and unfit to be President.

That last thingy is why the MSM luvs his butt so much.

georgej on May 26, 2007 at 2:49 AM

Now you’re just trying to seduce me, georgej. Well it won’t work, I have my own standards and no amount of flowery talk will…make me…no, stop…no…

take me, georgej, I’m yours!

Jaibones on May 26, 2007 at 8:14 AM

Thanks Senator McCain… Despite being a constitutent, I have not yet received a reply to the two short, polite inquiries I have sent my State’s junior Senator. Now do you think I’ll ever get one, when the staff sees the @us.army.mil on the end of my e-mail address?

Bah.

major john on May 26, 2007 at 9:05 AM

B Hussein Obama said:

“Governor Romney and Senator McCain are still supporting a war that has cost us thousands of lives, made us less safe in the world, and resulted in a resurgence of al-Qaeda. It is time to end this war so that we can redeploy our forces to focus on the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 and all those who plan to do us harm.”

WHAT DID HE SAY?
“made us less safe in the world”
“end this war so that we can redeploy our forces to focus on the terrorists”
“terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 and all those who plan to do us harm.”

my fav: so we can “focus on “…”all those who plan to do us harm.”

Can SOMEONE explain this islamafascist terrorist stuff to B Hussein please. ( I know, never mind)
