Video: Dems jet off to paradise on taxpayer’s dime for spring break

posted at 4:45 pm on May 22, 2007 by Allahpundit

The GOP must have been guilty of this at some point, but of course they were the problem the most ethical Congress ever was swept to power to solve. Apparently the solution involves junkets to London, Brussels, Key West, the Caribbean, and of course the mandatory layover in the Virgin Islands to attend to, er, homeland security business. All at the cost of a cool 10 G’s an hour, and with nary a Republican in sight despite the rule requiring trips on military jets to be bipartisan.

Plus, think of the carbon emissions.

Nice to see CNN on the ball here, and a good thing too. If this had come from FNC, there’d be torches and pitchforks outside News Corp. headquarters.

Exit question: Was Nancy Pelosi really the right person for CNN to ask about congressmen abusing their privileges with military aircraft?

The rules don’t apply to those that make them… or have you forgotten your indoctrination?

Lawrence on May 22, 2007 at 4:53 PM

Just think what it will be like under Hillary!

Pulchritudinous Patriot on May 22, 2007 at 4:53 PM

Can’t. Believe. I’m. Gonna. Say. It….

Kudos, CNN!

There, I said it. Don’t expect it again.

I didn’t but do you mind telling the Republicans that so next time they get power they show some (gum)balls?

Defector01 on May 22, 2007 at 4:54 PM

Darn, I coulda used that jet for my budget trip to London and Edinburgh in March… Oh well.

Save up for Economy class…that’s the way us poor people have to do it.

tickleddragon on May 22, 2007 at 4:55 PM

Funny how there’s never any “necessary trips” to Darfur or Siberia or Death Valley. These “necessary trips” always seem to be to very nice locations. That’s probably just a coincidence though, politicians would never lie to us.

forged rite on May 22, 2007 at 5:04 PM

And the real question…

as Congresses mandate is HERE… not Foreign policy, how do they figure any of this is justified?

Romeo13 on May 22, 2007 at 5:05 PM

We asked for them and we got them. What were we thinking in late summer/early fall of 2006? If it wouldn’t be so tragic it w/b funny.

Entelechy on May 22, 2007 at 5:09 PM

Glad we can give them some island R&R on our dime, geez.

While we’re at it, let’s not for get the climate research trip to Antarctica and New Zealand by Sens. Collins, Sununu and St. John McCain.

Allah, OT, did you see this?

amerpundit on May 22, 2007 at 5:23 PM

CNN as usual not fair and balanced, all Democrats and no Republicans. I can’t believe I agree with their one way reporting but in this story, I Do.

abinitioadinfinitum on May 22, 2007 at 5:25 PM

I’m begining to think that Nancy Pelosi and her cohorts are NOT looking out for the best interests of us ‘little people’.

Can any of you smart people disabuse me of this notion?

Kini on May 22, 2007 at 5:31 PM

The Dems have always acted like this when in power. What else is new?

duff65 on May 22, 2007 at 5:31 PM

Is it just me or could this have been summed up in about a minute and a half?

wryteacher on May 22, 2007 at 5:37 PM

Anyone else recall the demands from the left that everything to do with congressional operation be split down the middle, right after the Republicans took power in 1994?

They wanted EQUAL representation on EVERY committee, equal everything. They even tried to demand half of the committee chairmanships. Now that they have the gavel back, they want what they always believe they deserved. EVERYTHING.

Madam Speaker claims plausible deniability that she doesn’t approve trips, so she isn’t aware that there’s no bipartisan balance. But she claims to be aware of everything else that happens in her “most ethical congress”. Just one such imbalanced trip by Republicans, and the committee chair who approved it would have had to resign…

This, I think, bothers me the most. The whales. O dear Heaven, the whale-manity.

What is this vacation thing I hear people talking about? Hey Condi while they are out of the country it might be a good time for a “computer glitch” resulting in some revoked passports or maybe some additions to the terrorist watch list. Happens all the time.
/That makes about reason #137,842 why I will never be President.

LakeRuins on May 22, 2007 at 5:54 PM

And congress wonders why their poll numbers are low.

Wait a minute, stupid me..they could careless.

Highrise on May 22, 2007 at 6:12 PM

This makes me so angry. Their timing couldn’t have been worse (better). Still the dims that voted for them will make all sorts of excuses for them.

They detailed 3, said there at least 10 this spring…each one detailed was well over $100,000 (130,000 – 160,000) — um that is well over 10 million bucks! Now THIS is what you call a scandal.

And of course it’s hilarious the ethics party with all their promises were all violating the balanced party rule.

Topsecretk9 on May 22, 2007 at 7:11 PM

Just remember folks – stay home and pout, whatever you do, don’t go vote. Send that message!

And look what you get. Happy now?

Just think of how many starving whales that could have fed or disenfranchised trees all that money could have taught to read.

Let’s make it easy. No, none, nota, zip, zero military flights for any politician or their flunkies unless they are nationally elected unless approved by the President and a press release issued.

Forget the spin that Bennie Thompson tried to put on it; Caneel Bay, on St. John, US Virgin Islands, is a very expensive resort. Ferarri expensive, as in ‘if you have to ask…’ The only other place to stay on St. John is a campground owned by the National Park Service.

They made a special trip to stay there. It is about half hour hop from St Thomas and the National Park takes up most of the island.

It really is ‘all about the Benjamins’

Has anyone noticed the members of the new congressional majority have an issue of furrowing their brow Cynthia McKinny style? Like “You talkin to me?”, all bristly and stuff? This is in stark contrast to the humility shown by the truly great people of U.S. history. Even MLK was refined to a degree. NOTE to congress drop the badass routine! That goes for you too McCain.

Why feed me that bitter pill? Aren’t we suffering enough? :)

But I keep thinking that we might get a repeat performance on this whole Executive thing. Our candidates seem to be like magnifiers for the differences within out Big Tent, and I am beginning to think the only thing that would zap us off the couch this time in enough numbers is a candidate to vote against.

So, er: Hillary in ’08!

Axe on May 22, 2007 at 10:08 PM

Send your DEMOCRATIC representative a WHITE FEATHER post card! Tell them that you think that he/she is a CROOK, LIAR, and THIEF, acting like a fat greedy pig at the public trough.

Call him/her a LIAR for promising to END the “business as usual,” and reneging on it.

Then write a letter to the editor exposing the Democrats as the crooked TURDS they are.

georgej on May 23, 2007 at 5:21 AM

Thank God they told Pelosi, it will be fixed now.

right2bright on May 23, 2007 at 8:31 AM

I hope the plane goes down in the middle of the ocean. After the military crew ejects safely, of course.

SicSemperTyrannus on May 23, 2007 at 8:45 AM

Nice to see these poor hard working government folks taking such nice vacations off of the taxpayers dime. My vacation this year will be spent on my front porch. That’s about as far as I can afford to go due to the outragous hikes in gas prices, oil prices, food prices, and property taxes. Just to name a few. We are so screwed…..

What was the sound about 4:17 into the video when Thompson was speaking?

Kinda sounded like the BS meter was pegging.
