Pew poll of American Muslims chock full o’ nuance

This one’s getting all the attention…

pewe.png

…but this one’s at least as interesting. Is the lesson to take away here that Muslims will even oppose war on an Islamic regime if that regime is the Taliban and it’s in response to 9/11? Or is the lesson simply that there are a lot more Muslim Democrats than Republicans, and Democrats now oppose war on the Taliban?

pewb.png

Well, at least we don’t have to pretend, a la the immigration debate, that the group whose votes we’re competing for is potentially willing to vote Republican or at least break 50/50. Unless, that is, the next Republican abandons Bush’s foreign policy and retains his big spendin’ ways.

Then we might have a shot:

pewc.png

As always, you’re well advised to scroll through the results yourself. There’s plenty of good news in there too, especially about how better assimilated Muslims here are than in Londonistan. But of course, it only goes so far, particularly with those same younger Muslims who take the more “nuanced” view on suicide bombings in the first poll screencapped above:

pewa.png

I’ll leave you with this one, which does in fact put them squarely within the American mainstream. Note especially the breakdown by religious commitment:

AP, I can’t believe you didn’t note this:

Approve Use of Military Force in Afghanistan

Native-Born, right, 26%
Native-Born, wrong, 65%

Foreign-Born, right, 40%
Foreign-Born, wrong, 40%

Jaibones on May 22, 2007 at 12:43 PM

PS Holy Shit

Jaibones on May 22, 2007 at 12:43 PM

Don’t worry, law enforcement can handle those small fringe groups of “militants” on American soil who might hide behind the numbers.

Niko on May 22, 2007 at 12:44 PM

Does the last table indicate that our buddy Ron Paul has the religious right vote sewn up?!?

omnipotent on May 22, 2007 at 12:46 PM

Saw this at Ace’s this morning, but he mostly focused on the suicide bomber question. Looks like you found all the subtle nuances.

Bad Candy on May 22, 2007 at 12:46 PM

Doh! Wasn’t Aces!

Bad Candy on May 22, 2007 at 12:47 PM

Where’d I see that?

Huh…

Bad Candy on May 22, 2007 at 12:48 PM

Jaibones, stole my thunder. That’s what struck me – foreign born Muslims were more supportive of the War in Afghanistan than native born Muslims.

What exactly does that “nuance” mean? Maybe foreign born Muslims have seen the horrors of living under a repressive Taliban-like government much more closely, while many American Muslims can enjoy all the freedoms of a democracy yet long for the glory of an Islamic republic.

What do you think Allah?

wardrobedoor on May 22, 2007 at 12:52 PM

It could be that most of the Mideast muslim enclaves in the US are in hard left areas.

Bad Candy on May 22, 2007 at 12:58 PM

So basically, young less educated native-born Muslims are Truthers that oppose our wars in any Muslim nation for any reason, while older educated foreign-born Muslims are not Truthers and are more supportive of at least our intervention in Afghanistan.

I’d say that has the effect of the internet/media written all over it. Thanks a lot libs, you’re brainwashing your Muslim peers into believing your Truther nonsense, inflaming them to support terrorism and denounce our actions to free oppressed Muslims abroad.

Foreign-born Muslims know what the US military is fighting against in Iraq and Afghanistan, and are much more inclined to support it. Surprise surprise, young native-born Muslims have already learned from the liberals to take their freedoms for granted.

Seixon on May 22, 2007 at 1:04 PM

50% of women think military action in Afghanistan is wrong??? And the percentage who said no is only 27% which leaves another 23% Undecided.
I guess women really love those burquas and public executions in soccer stadiums.

LakeRuins on May 22, 2007 at 1:05 PM

how crass and cheap are the democratics? this is the e-mail i got today:

Subject: When the Big One Hits…

Message: Dear XXX,

Hurricane season doesn’t start until June 1st, and we’re already in trouble.

Tornadoes in Kansas. Fires in California, Georgia and Florida. Floods in Missouri. We simply don’t have the resources to handle catastrophic events across our country.

Those resources are missing because of the war in Iraq.

jummy on May 22, 2007 at 1:07 PM

ot/ OK got my second political video up. Let me know what you guys think

Who are the democrats ?

William Amos on May 22, 2007 at 1:15 PM

Note especially the breakdown by religious commitment

Hmmm, it’s almost as if people who have strong religious commitments are more likely to believe absurd things. I wonder why that is…

But on a less snarky note, where are all the Kirsten-Powers-Democrats on Afghanistan??? Dems are now pulling support from the War Everyone Wanted??? I thought that Rosie was pretty much in the fever swamps when she uses air quotes on the word “terrorist” when describing guys like Zawahiri and KSM, but now it looks like she’s squarely in the center of mainstream Dem opinion. I wonder if they would feel this way if Al Gore had been President when 9/11 happened.

(On the other hand, I wonder if we were in the second term of a Gore administration right now, would Republicans have turned on Afghanistan? I don’t think the answer’s very obvious.)

Enrique on May 22, 2007 at 1:24 PM

In all fairness, however, a majority of those polled believed that mosques should stay out of politics entirely.

jp on May 22, 2007 at 1:38 PM

It won’t be long until Americans are the minority in America.

I’d like to see the poll results for Democrats. What are you first, an American or a Democrat? We all know the answer, it’s the same as the Muslim poll – but probably more tilted.

fogw on May 22, 2007 at 1:47 PM

Its not bad Will Amos, try’n find more traitorous soundbites. Tie ‘em in with the antiwar crowd, pundits like Talking Points Jane Fleming, people like Olbermurrow, few Sheehan quotes might help, whatever you can find.

Turn it into a long clip. Read off or have a written quote by prominent leftists a URL or footnote, dramatic music would be good too. Lace the film with various clips of military heroism, then give add the questions you give. Show the media in its role in undermining.

Get better text frames, the current ones are kinda dull. Change the end to something less partisan, something “Stop Liberals From Undermining Our Armed Forces” or to that effect. At this stage, saying vote Republican is gonna get you growled at by conservatives too.

Well, you asked for critique. I’m just throwing out what would make a truly badass propaganda ad.

Bad Candy on May 22, 2007 at 1:48 PM

Unless, that is, the next Republican abandons Bush’s foreign policy and retains his big spendin’ ways.

Hagel? Can’t think of another, unless it’s Paul.

Enrique, I’m just glad I don’t have to contemplate a 2nd Gore presidency. By now I’d be bored to death by his snooty lecturing.

Two items from the poll – one, that the article paints the results more rosy than they are; it’s written with no alarm factor. The second item is that they didn’t poll the Muslims if they voted conservative before 9/11/01. From my circles most Muslims did vote for Reagan, Bush Sr/Jr. Now, they’re all schnapsed. The entire discussion of the Middle East, terrorism et all is off the table because they are simply insane on these topics.

Thank you Bad. A few quick replies.

For one I am thinking of these as political commercials not political statements. Most commercials run less than 30 seconds and I if anything have the clips too long. you have to pack as much punch as you can in a small clip.

Secondly it is a political clip about the political parties. Yes you can tie the anti war movement to the democrats but the main focus should be the democrats in office not the anti war movement.

I admit my vidoes are very crude. I dont have anything other than the basic windows media editor. I could make them much more sophisticated if I had the equiptment to do so. So its really bargan basement advertizing here with me.

I will also say I am a proponent of not mixing messages. Id rather have a pro US military message and an critical look at the anti war seperately than mixing the two together. I believe it dilutes the message to mix good and bad.

Next subjects are immigration and combining it with the welfare state. Also want to do some positive ad videos. When I get more time.

William Amos on May 22, 2007 at 1:55 PM

Fair enough, I would say at least change the written frames. I’d use italics and a better font, style and colors, those current ones are kinda boring and plain.

I see we have a Blog Legend in our presence, I’ve not noticed you here before Sir. It could be my tunnel vision but welcome anyway.

tickleddragon on May 22, 2007 at 2:01 PM

William, I generally don’t watch videos at work but I did let yours run. I’m happy you are dedicating time to this. I liked it and, as already stated, above, would leave the ending open. It’s pretty obvious which side you’re on.

An idea – click on the handel of RightWing – Randy has a site and has done good work in this area, funny/bitey too, in the past. You might want to e-mail him for pointers. He might not have the time or the interest now, but might give you a few great tips. Good luck and keep at it, and share with us,

Entelechy on May 22, 2007 at 2:01 PM

Again any kind of political ad has to have a statement on it stating WHO made it or who the subject is speaking for.

I can point out democratic foibles all day but unless I put out an alternative there is no solution or resolution to the entire clip. Its just not enough to be anti democratic the entire clip. You have to have a target and lead the veiwer to your target.

William Amos on May 22, 2007 at 2:12 PM

Sorry William, that I wasn’t more clear – instead of leaving the ending “open” I should have said “leave the ending with support for a conservative cause” – as you already intend to do with the immigration bill. I’m just trying to support your efforts, as I have zero talents in putting these together. They inspire me only when I see them.

Entelechy on May 22, 2007 at 2:15 PM

William that was pretty good but it seemed too short. I’m waiting t see the next ones. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Pew poll of American Muslims chock full o’ nuance.

Looks more like American Muslims, chock full o’ nuts! Would you like cream or sugar with your cup of Jihad?

soulsirkus on May 22, 2007 at 3:05 PM

In all fairness:

“Do you consider yourself to be a Christian or an American first?”

I bet quite a few on the right would answer the former. It’s not a fair question.

The others are, though, and the answers are frightening, though expected.

Halley on May 22, 2007 at 3:23 PM

If President Bush wants a large boost in his popularity, he should tout this poll and state that we should no longer be accepting Muslims into our country because of their anti-semitic leanings and lack of tolerance.

“Do you consider yourself to be a Christian or an American first?”

Halley on May 22, 2007 at 3:23 PM

The difference, though, is that Christianity is compatible with our Constitution and freedoms. Islam is not, which is why you never will find a true Muslim democracy.

januarius on May 22, 2007 at 3:42 PM

Check out Germany. That’s a pleasant surprise. I wonder what they’re doing differently there?

Tanya on May 22, 2007 at 4:20 PM

Do I consider most muslims prospective terrorists?

100% yes!

SouthernGent on May 22, 2007 at 6:42 PM

One of the headings stuck out at me – “Young Muslims: More Observant, More Radical.”

I don’t think it needs any comment.

SouthernGent on May 22, 2007 at 6:42 PM

As much as I hate the religion of Islam, my upstairs neighbor in my flat is a young Muslim dude, a researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Whenever we cross paths he seems cool. We talk about video games – we both just got XBox 360s. I don’t think he’s any more likely to be a terrorist than I am. I think it’s easy to get caught up in the “most Muslims could be terrorists” thing, and I get caught up in it too sometimes, but really I think most Muslims in America just want to make a living and be cool.

Enrique on May 22, 2007 at 7:45 PM

“Hmmm, it’s almost as if people who have strong religious commitments are more likely to believe absurd things. I wonder why that is…”

Enrique, you are a anti-religious bigot. Just thought I’d let you know.

clark smith on May 22, 2007 at 8:23 PM

I have to laugh at the clearly inaccurate portion of the poll that claims highly religious people are more than twice as likely as those of low religious commitment to believe that arabs were not involved in 9/11.

From personal experience, I know that the overwhelming majority of highly religious people believe that arabs were behind 9/11. It’s irreligious lefties that tend to wear the conspiratorial tinfoil hats when it comes to 9/11.

How is this *not* the headline everywhere!?!?!

about 125,000 Moslems [5%] in the US are willing to tell a stranger on the fone that they have a “a very favorable view of alQaeda.”

…and 675,000 Moslems [27%] decline to answer or “don’t know” what their view of alQ is.

[see chart page 54]

Didn’t Alondinnerjacket say outright that he has suicide shock troops her in the US who will counter-attack if we do anything to prevent him from getting The Bomb?

Aren’t these two Dots that seem to need connecting?

Ward, maybe there’s a positive spin on this one: if the U.S. born Muslims have been jaundiced by the relentlessly leftist U.S. media, and are measurably more violent because of it, then Al Jazeera is not nearly as effective as we have feared.

Eh?

PS Enrique, the med school kid from upstairs is a sleeper-cell suicide bomber studying tricks for mass market food contamination from one of the leftist haters at U of W…
