I think the NYT reporters on the ground in Iraq have never been awful in the same way the Baathist Broadcasting Company or the AP "in other violence" hacks often are. John Burns, their bureau chief, is a reasonable guy.

Most of the problems in the NYT's Iraq coverage, I believe, are the result of management and editorial bias and mistakes, picking, choosing, and slanting the news that their competent reporters send along.

The problem is that Iraq had a very high crime/Murder rate before Saddam as well (while nothing on par remotely).

I think much of what we see is normal life that is being mixed into the operation, casualties etc. This is because there is an unrealistic idea of what ending the violence really means. The operations is going to be won, the victory won't be given full merit because we lack perspective on Iraq's history.

It sounds like they don't need our guys in the middle of it. Or militia members should arrested, tried, and jailed and not left to control the streets with strong arm tactics. Are these people incapable of following a secular form of government for the good of all?

Good article. It's just too bad that we all sit up and take notice when the MSM (esp. NYT) gets something right.
