Dem who voted for car cell-phone ban crashes SUV — while reaching for cell phone

posted at 2:31 pm on May 22, 2007 by Allahpundit

First Silky, now this. It’s Hypocrisy Tuesday!

CAROLE MIGDEN was lucky no one was seriously hurt Friday when her SUV struck another car while she was trying to answer her cell phone.

The minor accident was newsworthy because Migden is a state senator from San Francisco…

Migden’s accident is a reminder of what can happen when drivers are distracted. It also is a reminder of what will happen in July 2008. That’s when a new state law – SB 1613 – that requires drivers to stop using hand-held cell phones will take effect. Fines will start at $20 for drivers caught talking on the phone without a headset, ear bud or some other form of technology that eliminates the hands. Subsequent infractions will cost $50. Emergency calls are exempt.

It should be noted that Migden, who also represents Marin and southern Sonoma County, voted for the new law.

That may not have been the only accident she was involved in that morning, either.

I know many of you are eyeing the “SUV” part of the headline, hungry for a hypocrisy exacta here by catching a San Francisco liberal driving around in the bete noire of the environmental movement. But alas, my friends, it’s not to be:

It was a hybrid. Heart-ache.

Blowback

Curses!

Ironically the call was from John Corzine reminding her to buckle up.

Doesn’t a “hybrid” SUV sort of miss the whole point?

That’s like low fat Skittles. Or low-tar Camels. They’ll still rot your teeth … or blacken your lungs … just a little bit slower.

Either get a Hummer … or get back in your Prius. Hippie.

My karma ran over your dogma.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on May 22, 2007 at 2:44 PM

I need a good laugh today…….this helped. Thanks Ms. Migden.

I know some people who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. I think it’s time for a law against them too!

Is it just me or does she seem to have about an inch of make-up on in that photo? And that Ronald McDonald hairdo, wow.

Aylios on May 22, 2007 at 2:57 PM

Yeah, she kinda looks like an albino clown.

Bad Candy on May 22, 2007 at 3:00 PM

The good news is that her free SUV is a 2007 Highlander Hybrid, so at least Miss Midgen gets to think she’s fighting our country’s dependence on foreign oil.

I’m not sure she gets a pass on this one. Only part of the objection to SUV’s is about fuel; part of it is the presumption of having a big car that puts you above other drivers, and one that, in a crash, privileges you over less fortunate schlub who’s driving a little sensible car. they also have an aesthetic association with suburban soccer mom culture, and there is of course nothing more vile to the enlightened granola (suburban soccer mom) crowd.

see-dubya on May 22, 2007 at 3:03 PM

Maybe I should send her one of our LLamabutcher Industries “This SUV runs on pure, clean whale oil” bumper stickers.

HA HA HA

Catie96706 on May 22, 2007 at 3:26 PM

With California’s budget issues I’m more pissed that she gets a brand new Highlander on my dime. The hypocrisy of it all is amusing, but she should be paying for her own lux-o-barge, “green” or not.

I think the funniest thing about this though, is that she looks like a comic book character.

She kind of makes Katherine Harris look good.

I fear the road cell phone talker more than the drunk.

Maxx on May 22, 2007 at 3:39 PM

That’s why they, the democrats, are here.
To make decisions for you.
You can’t make them on your own.
They know what’s best.
They are allowed cause they are the government.
Silly. ♠♣♦♥

Kini on May 22, 2007 at 3:43 PM

Here in Calif. this is but a minor story. We’ve got something to laugh about our government every day, almost.

On the federal level no hypocrisy item is bigger than us having to live under Social Security when the fat cats in D.C. all retire millionaires from private fund investments.

Yep, I won’t repeat the Heine tune today – drink the water idiots, we’ll have the wine. And we let them get away with it – therefore we are to blame!

Entelechy on May 22, 2007 at 3:53 PM

yeah I’ve noticed a lot of people who strongly support something this unenforceable usually are hypocrits themselves about it.

Highrise on May 22, 2007 at 4:10 PM

Democratic Hypocrisy….

Liberals saying do as I sa, not as I do…

No news here. Just business as usual.

JayHaw Phrenzie on May 22, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Oh, the irony.

BacaDog on May 22, 2007 at 8:00 PM

“Fines start at $20″ for driving without some “form of technology that eliminates the hands. ”

I’ve seen people drive with their feet before, but this is kind of pushing it!

taznar on May 22, 2007 at 10:11 PM

Having to test ride motorcycles almost daily, as part of my job (I fix expensive toys), I really fear drivers on cell phones.

As for her driving a SUV…. shouldnt she be “in a Yugo…” driving with pride…
