Guardian: U.S. expecting Iran/AQ summer surge to try to force Iraq withdrawal

Eh, it’s pretty thin and not much of a scoop, really. Does anyone not expect pushback when all the surge troops are finally in place? Our enemies know the election cycle, they know the country has turned against the war, and they know Petraeus is due to report on the progress of the security plan in September. That’s why it’s not a big deal that the Dems relented on the timetable today: after all, there already is a timetable. And naturally jihadists are going to use it to calculate their attacks for maximum political effect.

[A senior U.S. official in Baghdad] said US commanders were bracing for a nationwide, Iranian-orchestrated summer offensive, linking al-Qaida and Sunni insurgents to Tehran’s Shia militia allies, that Iran hoped would trigger a political mutiny in Washington and a US retreat…

US officials now say they have firm evidence that Tehran has switched tack as it senses a chance of victory in Iraq. In a parallel development, they say they also have proof that Iran has reversed its previous policy in Afghanistan and is now supporting and supplying the Taliban’s campaign against US, British and other Nato forces.

Tehran’s strategy to discredit the US surge and foment a decisive congressional revolt against Mr Bush is national in scope and not confined to the Shia south, its traditional sphere of influence, the senior official in Baghdad said. It included stepped-up coordination with Shia militias such as Moqtada al-Sadr’s Jaish al-Mahdi as well as Syrian-backed Sunni Arab groups and al-Qaida in Mesopotamia, he added. Iran was also expanding contacts across the board with paramilitary forces and political groups, including Kurdish parties such as the PUK, a US ally.

Yeah, I don’t know. Seems too convenient and needlessly complicated. AQ and Iran don’t need to conspire to make life difficult for us over the summer; if anything, it’ll just slow them down, as there’s bound to be friction and logistical headaches. They’ll do perfectly well launching their own independent offensives. If the mullahs are keen to set things off they can just unleash the militias, especially in the south where it’ll force a U.S. troop diversion from the north to reinforce the British. That’ll leave AQ and the Sunnis with extra room to run in Baghdad and Diyala. This reads more like an attempt to lay at Iran’s feet anything bad that happens from now on, whether it’s caused by Sunni or Shia fanatics. Not sure why it would be leaked to a notoriously left-wing foreign paper either, unless the source is trying to trade on the Guardian’s progressive bona fides to lend the story extra credibility for American leftist consumption.

On the other hand, Sadr’s new Sunni outreach program is decidedly odd. A grand, Iran-backed bargain to push out the occupier would help make sense of it.

All they need to do is nothing.

Pelosi and Reid will give them Iraq with a bright yellow ribbon wrapped around it.

I think Bush realizes that Iraq cant hold. I think he wants to do as much damage to the Jihadists before we leave as we can.

Bush just needs time. I hope he gets till September.

If we get Osama that could turn the poll numbers around. That would remove a big complaint by the dems and give Bush a bounce. I think Bush needs to start using the stick more with Pakistan. Musharif is under alot of attacks at home and if we root out the islamics helps both sides. Just a few SF guys and the WOT can take a big turn.

kick the crap out of them before they can get started

The summer?

You mean the season people spend the least amount of time in front of the TV? By July the country will be more well informed on Fantastic Four 3: Galactus Chronicles and what Optimus Prime looks like than what AQ is doing. Jihadis are stupid.

Guardian: U.S. expecting Iran/AQ summer surge to try to force Iraq withdrawal

I for one am shocked at that notion! You mean the enemy would react to the promises of surrender from the Democrats!? It’s almost as if people who’ve been talking about such a self fulfilling prophecy all along, were right!

When the Guardian starts printing it matter of factly, is it ok to say we are already at war with Iran?

JackStraw on May 21, 2007 at 9:29 PM

Wheeee! Tit for tat surges! Whoo-hoo! It’s so much more fun when a superpower fights a war badly!

Kinda on/off topic…
Did anyone else hear what Colmes said to our past US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton? After some long Iran nuke discussion on how Europe has been trying to talk to Iran for years w/ zero result, Colmes just kept saying ” but we have to talk to them”, like a 4 year old ad nauseum “we haven’t ever just talked to them” over and over.
It was clear and plain for anyone to know that many had talked to Iran for 20 years, for the betterment of the world and Iran wants nukes, period.
So Bolton asked Colmes something like “what do you say about that?”
Alan after 5 minutes or so, after ‘Hannity’s turn w/Bolton’ said:
” Well I wouldn’t have Europe do our dirty work or diplomacy work for us, to answer your question” THEN Alan cut the segment and went to commercial before anyone had a chance to say anything else.
It was the single most disrespectful thing I’ve seen from this narcissistic boob, alan colmes.
Colmes should be fired for that, IMHO. Go sit w/Tehran Rosie.

Someone with the honor and integrity that I’ve seen from Bolton, doing one of the most difficult jobs in the world, FOR the world, and the US… and some slime bucket like Colmes questions his integrity?

Is it me? Or was that the worst?

RR often used the most left wing outfits to air the info they wanted out there. It’s not really news to any of us so tipping the news sources we go to would be ignored/missed by most and highly suspect to others.

TBinSTL on May 21, 2007 at 10:26 PM

Yeah? And I expect a lot of dead jihadis this summer.

Tony737 on May 21, 2007 at 11:01 PM

Well, AllahPagan, you should know by now that both the Guardian and the Telegraph have been leaning heavily towards “news stories” which are essentially predictions: They foretell the Future, then round up some quotes to dress the Pig up as a legit story

British Journalism 101……..and they’re usually wrong, or else glib and vague enough to cover most Potentialities

Janos Hunyadi on May 22, 2007 at 1:31 AM

Its all about taking our ability to make any change in PAKISTAN possible.

The Jihadists are on the move there, and if they can come to power there, they gain a nuclear arsenal WITH a delivery capability.

Lets see, Phillipines, Malyasia, India, Iraq, Afaganistan, Britain, France, Spain… one way to keep you enemy from seeing your main goal is to advance on other fronts.

What’s Iran’s code name for this operation? The Tet Offensive?

Expect to see a lot of air travel from Tehran back and forth to Ho Chi Minh City to get last minutes tips on how to conduct this opreation.
