[...] WaPo’s got a sneak preview today of what post-withdrawal Iraq might look like. The case study is Basra, the disintegration of which was noted by the Guardian three months ago; Steven Vincent, the art critic turned war correspondent, saw it coming two years ago and got a bullet in his head for his trouble. Follow that last link, by all means, and see what the Brits’ “sensitivity” about looking like occupiers produced. From WaPo: But “it’s hard now to paint Basra as a success story,” said a senior U.S. official in Baghdad with long experience in the south. Instead, it has become a different model, one that U.S. officials with experience in the region are concerned will be replicated throughout the Iraqi Shiite homeland from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf. A recent series of war games commissioned by the Pentagon also warned of civil war among Shiites after a reduction in U.S. forces… [...]

[...] Why are they choppering in to plant bombs? They own southern Iraq; they could just send the materiel across the border and let their proxies do it for them. And why would they risk trying something as provocative as this with the Brits having already declared their intention to withdraw and the U.S. on the brink of following suit? They’ll have a free hand in Iraq once we’re gone. It’s madness to chance a casus belli with a direct attack on coalition troops. [...]

[...] There’s been a lot of bad mojo about the JAM and southern Iraq in the news lately, from that questionable Guardian piece about Iran inciting the militias as part of its own “summer surge” to the long AP story about Sadr trying to consolidate power in advance of a U.S. withdrawal to the excellent Guardian report about Shiite militia dominance in Basra. If this wasn’t a coincidence, then the British and Maliki are either sending a message to Sadr and his southern capos that they can still make their lives tough if need be or else they’re trying to blast some of his ducks before he can get them in a row and make whatever move he’s planning to make. Gen. Odierno told WaPo that he thinks Sadr came back partly because there are “cracks” in the Mahdi Army that need repairing; officials who spoke to the Times say the same. So now they’ve created another big crack for him to fill before the local chapter splinters and the infighting to fill the power vacuum begins. Don’t be surprised in the next few weeks if other local JAM commanders decide to “resist arrest” and suffer the consequences. [...]

tomas-

Capone died of syphilis in 1947. He served an 8 year tax evasion sentence starting in 1931, and was freed for "good behavior".

If spirochetes hadn't gotten him, he would have been back to work, but, instead,he retired in weakened health, to his Florida estate.

That's not much "got rid of".

Retirement to an unconfiscated estate.

Tomas,

I think they control Basra in the same manner Capone controlled Chicago during Prohibition. Your denials sound somewhat like J Edgar Hoover adamantly denying the existence of the Mafia.

A knee jerk reaction agrees with the comment about saving the Kurds. They always were the best and brightest to the US out of the whole country. It will be a fargin shame, deeply, to see the innocents, the common Iraqis get a major screwing from the power-grabing, lust for resources, Iran controlled groups. LIke its been said, a war of attrition, Iran has been operating remote control, our rules of engagement were severly limited and we have over 3400 of the best Americans in the Mansions of the Lord but a lot of hurting family here at home. This whole thing just sucks a big one.

Sure glad we didn't send enough troops in the first place.

Didn't kill Sadr and destroy his Madhi army when they first arose.

Didn't install a mandated secular Constitution.

And don't have any leaders of our own who understand the basics of islam or its 1400 year long march of imperialistic expansionism of militant, intolerant ohammadism.

Bush seems planty capable of destroying a country ruthlessles when he wants to.

Unfortunately, it's America.

(Maybe we name to rename the country NoBorderstan.)

They don't control Basra...They don't have the supply lines from atleast two directions. This is a stupid article. Iran doesn't have the abilities you are giving them credit for. Ridiculous.

Something I fail to understand...If President Bush said, ad nauseum, "If you help a terrorist, you are a terrorist"...and we know that Iran is in deep with, but certainly not limited to, Basra...why don't we hold Iran accountable for this?

Most can not fathom what democracy means.

I agree, shooter. How on earth can they possibly understand democracy? The only thing they've experienced is violence. It's all they know. their religion condones it, their state condones it, it surrounds them. It's no wonder they can't get their sh*t together.
