Shock: Murtha accused of behaving unethically with appropriations

posted at 11:38 am on May 18, 2007 by Allahpundit

John Murtha? Madam Speaker’s handpicked choice for House majority leader? Whom CREW has more than once described as “one of the most unethical members of Congress,” with very good reason?

Most ethical Congress evah:

Powerful Democrat Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania threatened to deny any further spending projects to a Republican who challenged him over an earmark, his antagonist [Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) has charged — a potential violation of House rules…

Rogers turned the tables later that night by saying he would propose a reprimand of Murtha for violating House rules…

According to the draft resolution, Murtha shouted at Rogers on the House floor Thursday afternoon for offering a motion last week to expose $23 million Murtha requested in an intelligence bill.

The Pennsylvania Democrat requested the money to prevent the administration from shuttering the National Drug Intelligence Center in Johnstown, Pa. — which sits in Murtha’s district.

“I hope you don’t have any earmarks in the defense appropriations bills because they are gone and you will not get any earmarks now and forever,” Murtha told Rogers on the House floor, according to the draft transcript supplied to The Politico.

“This is not the way we do things here — and is that supposed to make me afraid of you?” Rogers replied.

“That’s the way I do it,” Murtha said.

When another Republican, Todd Tiahrt, voted for Rogers’s motion to expose Murtha’s porkbarrelling, Murtha allegedy screamed at him too. Click.

Update: Gateway Pundit has Fox News video (sans audio) of Murtha getting in Tiahrt’s face on the House floor.

“That’s the way I do it,” Murtha said.

My guess? NOTHING will come from this. Same shite, same dems, different day.

But again, this story means NOTHING next to that stupid Amnesty Bill. I can think of nothing else. Our Republic is doomed if we don’t find some way to stop it!!

Better government through threats and intimidation.

Kini on May 18, 2007 at 1:07 PM

Murtha is damned lucky he’s not in jail. He can thank whoever in the MSM leaked the ABSCAM investigation.

Most Democrats are liars, cowards, traitors, and/or lots of other disgusting things….. but it just dawned on me… outside of refusing to defend the country, they are no different than Republicans!

Will someone please start a political party that thinks conservatively, like Republicans, but is aggressive against its opponents, like democrats. One that has the guts to stand up for its beliefs. Please!

Rogers plans to insert a transcript of their exchange in the Congressional Record to document the potential violation. His resolution will also require a House vote to reprimand Murtha for his comments, according to a draft received by The Politico. Rogers is expected to file it on Monday.

It does not call for an investigation by the Ethics Committee.

The difference between the Donks and the Republicans is in the last sentance: the Republicans won’t call for an investiation, the Donks would have had already had the investigation organzined and in place by now.

The overall controversy stems from a disagreement between Murtha and the Bush administration about closing the National Drug Intelligence Center, an intelligence gathering facility supervised by the Drug Enforcement Agency.

President Bush’s budget cut $23 million from the budget to force the agency to close the office, which has received repeated low marks from several federal review boards.

More differences between Ds and Rs. The WH is making a small effort to defund weak government programs or offices. Murtha is trying to keep it going and waste taxpayer money, only because it is in his district. That’s why this clown keeps getting reelected.

Mallard T. Drake on May 18, 2007 at 2:01 PM

In the next three election cycles we should vote each and every one of these worthless, self-serving people out of office. At this stage I really could care less if we end up replacing every Dem with another Dem, and every Republican with another Republican, leaving the Dems in the majority. I’ll take that result, just so we can get a fresh start with some new blood, new ideas and public servants who are interested in serving the public.

We are the people. We still have our precious power to vote losers out of office. That’s all we have now, losers, spending their every waking moment trying to get re-elected again. That’s not waht our founding fathers intended. Some of these dinosaurs have held office for half a lifetime, and think they can’t be replaced. Let’s show ‘em the door.

Power to the people!

Brother, you all are desperate to feel good about yourself by bashing the liberals and Dems by trying desperately to dig up dirt on them, while we have so many Republican issues. That is what they call partisan BS.

You call what Murtha did as “trying desperately to dig up dirt on” Dems and libs?? Are you serious? Are you going to sit here and tell me that there was nothing wrong with what Murtha did (or has done)? Even the Dems weren’t willing to elect this fraud as their majority leader – they just used him when they needed to, and now, he’s yesterday’s garbage.

Rick on May 18, 2007 at 2:50 PM

gmcjetpilot on May 18, 2007 at 2:35 PM

Um, you don’t have to dig up anything on Murtha. He’s one big pile of dirt, who has no sense of shame.

common sensineer on May 18, 2007 at 2:56 PM

I am *so proud* that Murtha comes from my hometown of Johnstown.

dalewalt on May 18, 2007 at 2:59 PM

1) The reasons are obvious. Dems are not expected to behave honestly, Repubs are. Particularly by Dems, who have majority control of MSM outlets, and thus set majority cultural expectations. This is why Dems get away with virtually anything and Repubs are always being slammed for everything.

2) “Vote them all out” is useless unless you also kill the “Party Machines” that pick almost all of the candidates you have to choose from. What’s the point of just replacing one DNC or RNC pick with another?

Merovign on May 19, 2007 at 1:55 PM

I hope murtha ends up spanked. Gawd knows he has said enough stuff to get him into hot water.

murtha, you are a tool.
