How have we never met? Visited Perth four times while on active duty, and got to see both the Fremantle prison (a tour), and the Casuarina jail (Shore Patrol courtesy pickup of drunk and disorderly sailors).

Both were marginally more hospitable than the Singapore jail. There, the inmates wear nothing but undershorts, the cells are about 20′ x 20′, with half of that level and the other half on a slight slope (for fluid draining, yuck!)

If you’re visiting Perth, a wonderful sister city of San Diego, don’t miss visiting the Freemantle prison, a tough place until a few years past. Former inmates are tour guides and they even demonstrate hangings, including showing where female prisoner were hanged.

I’m trying to put myself in the place of that wife, waiting for that guy…and can’t quite get there. Must be love.
