Second Republican debate open thread

Tune in tonight to the Fox News Channel at 9pm eastern. Like the previous debate, this one will last 90 minutes.

If you’re not a television, Fox News is simulcasting the debate on Fox News Radio.

We’ll have a poll up afterwards asking who won. LGF has a pre-debate straw poll. Stay tuned.

If you’re watching and see something clipworthy, don’t be a stranger.

Update (AP): The Fredheads are on the scene with literature in hand. Geraghty thinks the debate might already be over, with Fred the winner by dint of his video response to Michael Moore. It would be sweet irony if Moore, whoring for buzz for his movie, ended up inadvertently building excitement for the conservative standard bearer in the race.

WaPo expects Rudy to be in the crosshairs tonight given South Carolina’s reputation for social conservatism and Falwell’s death this morning. (Any hosanna for Falwell are likely to come from Mitt, who’s in fifth place in the state, if you can believe it, and will be looking to trumpet his values credentials.) He might get a question about 9/11 planning, too, after a former advisor produced an old memo challenging Rudy’s claim that the advisor had recommended the NYC emergency crisis center be placed in WTC 7. (Another former Giuliani aide came forward today to corroborate Rudy’s account.) The possible X-factor tonight, though, is immigration. Late word is that Republicans and Democrats have reached a compromise that would legalize illegals; neither McCain nor Rudy is going to want to talk about that, but Hotline says Tancredo plans to come out swinging so they might not have a choice. Stay tuned.

Update: The boss is liveblogging it.

Update: Huckabee says Congress has been spending money like John Edwards at a beauty shop:

Update: POLL CLOSED — RESULTS COMING SOON …

Update (BP): We have one or two video hightlights on the way. Here’s Rep. Tancredo looking for Jack Bauer.

If you think he’s kidding, here’s a clip from Laura Ingraham yesterday proving that he’s…not.

Hume threw Ron Paul a softball on the economy but he couldn’t leave well enough alone. What. An. Idiot.

Laura on May 15, 2007 at 10:27 PM

Tancredo wants Jack Bauer! Game. Set. Match.

NightmareOnKStreet on May 15, 2007 at 10:27 PM

Ron Paul is a complete nut

TheBigOldDog on May 15, 2007 at 10:27 PM

Here is ONE combat Veteran who thinks you are full of doodoo McCain.

So not ALL Ex- and Active vet agrees with you.

In fact, I note that the ones you nbamed by name are all pretty much crypto-liberals who made their rank more due to being aligned with Clinton than on merit.

I just tuned in to the debates while McCain gave that answer. Sorry I missed the earlier parts (re-run later or is anyone going to post it in entirety?) But I’m now tempted to miss the rest of it thanks to McCain.

LegendHasIt on May 15, 2007 at 10:27 PM

Yikes! Ron Paul is done. Stick a fork in him.

At least we will be able to tell the dem trolls now -
“I’m a Republican! I’m a conservative! And I support Ron Paul”

Yeah – right. Kill filter engage….

Romeo13 on May 15, 2007 at 10:31 PM

Romney was good..not great
Rudy was strong when he needed to be strong and makes the points all others NEED to make..especially when he called out that nutcase RPaul…
McCain..done
Tancredo..done
Hunter..new life
Huccabee..suprising and could be a dark horse
Thompson..pathetic

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 10:31 PM

WHO Won?

abinitioadinfinitum on May 15, 2007 at 10:31 PM

Very well done, and very informative. Great Job Fox (as expected)

rslancer14 on May 15, 2007 at 10:32 PM

Any man with the smarts to call for Jack Bauer in the clinch is the man for me!!
Tancredo-Hunter GO!!

Mellen on May 15, 2007 at 10:32 PM

Romney wins. Huckabee, Guliani, Tancredo all had moments. A few extra negatives for Guiliani and McCain tonight. The rest don’t matter. Paul is still falling down the abyss.

RobertCSampson on May 15, 2007 at 10:32 PM

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 10:31 PM

Fred!

Laura on May 15, 2007 at 10:33 PM

Damn – Mitt is smooth. Too bad I get a bad feeling about his real stands on Choice, 2nd Amendment, and Sanctity of Marriage.

Now if Tancredo had Mitt’s smoothness…

Run Fred! Run!

This so-called “debate” format sucks.

Huccabee sends one across the bow! Yee Ha!

sonnyspats1 on May 15, 2007 at 10:35 PM

Useless platitudes.

Paul cooked his goose- look to see how he does on the web polls. It should reveal how much of his support is from lib democrats.

Valiant on May 15, 2007 at 10:36 PM

So what debate format would work for you?

flyboy777 on May 15, 2007 at 10:36 PM

I would LOVE to see:

Fred!/Duncan!

Could live with

Fred!/Rudy
Fred!/Romney

Any of the above will do….and perhaps Huckabee in there BUT I am VERY SUSPECT of another Gov from Arkansas!

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 10:36 PM

McCain’s drunken sailor story was priceless. It almost made me forget that he forgets what side he is on regularly.

RobertCSampson on May 15, 2007 at 9:22 PM

Quote of the day…

McCain recv’d an e-mail from a man who said, “… As a former drunken sailor, I resent being comapred to Congress…”

Mazztek on May 15, 2007 at 9:23 PM

I’m kind of surprised at you guys… I found McCain’s repeat annoying. It’s like he’s pandering to people who like talking points and slogans, and that’s not what the right is about. It would have been one thing to say it, but he was repeating word for word a line he just used a week or so ago. It’s as stupid as his dozen or so times he said “lighten up and get a life”.

Update: Huckabee says Congress has been spending money like John Edwards at a beauty shop:

That comment on the other hand was great.

(disclaimer: I’m catching up as I just fired up the DVR and hit play from the beginning about 10 minutes ago)

RightWinged on May 15, 2007 at 10:36 PM

So what debate format would you rather see?

flyboy777 on May 15, 2007 at 10:37 PM

My favorite line (in response to Ron Paul):

Romney- “I think we should all get 30 seconds on that”

mojowire on May 15, 2007 at 10:37 PM

Rudy on Fox: He [Paul] did the same thing as the Saudi Prince did. It’s America’s fault. I usually hear this from the Democrat side, not the Republican side. I gave him his $10M back…

TheBigOldDog on May 15, 2007 at 10:38 PM

McCain doesn’t just reach across the aisle –He is in the other aisle….This guy is doomed and his Illegal diatribe is baloney…he has run from his disastrous position since Iowa…What a friggin clown!

Mellen on May 15, 2007 at 10:38 PM

Shoulda called for Demo Dick Marchincho…

Hollywood vs. Reality… a large part of the problem IMO.

Romeo13 on May 15, 2007 at 10:40 PM

Rudy wants all illegal immigrants who commit other crimes, thrown out of the country, as well as those who don’t come forward to apply for a green card.

TheBigOldDog on May 15, 2007 at 10:42 PM

Once the sound bite gets circulated, Silky Pony is history, courtesy of Gov. Huckabee.

Did Ron(Puke)Paul forget that America’s Mayor was on the the same stage, along with what really happened on 9/11?

A winner? I’m still waiting for Fred!

abinitioadinfinitum on May 15, 2007 at 10:45 PM

McCain is infuriating. Refuses to acknowledge how are soldiers ARE treated when captured. Instead he keeps arguing hypothetical.

RightWinged on May 15, 2007 at 10:36 PM

first time I had seen McCain use that line, sorry. whatever u do, don’t take me for a McCain supporter.. yikes

My Vote????

Thompson / Gingrich in 08!

They won.

Romeo13 on May 15, 2007 at 10:48 PM

McCain isnt doing any better on the after debate interview on H&C..I think he is done.

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 10:48 PM

Colmes doesn’t understand how they’d follow us home…I often wonder about him, lately.

Entelechy on May 15, 2007 at 10:48 PM

Colmes on the following us home – “Iraq never even had long range missiles, how are they going to follow us home?”

Is he not aware of al Queda in Iraq? Tool.

Laura on May 15, 2007 at 10:49 PM

So what debate format would work for you?

I’druther see one-on-one debates…A lottery, to see “who” debates “who,” once a week for the whole election cycle.

franksalterego on May 15, 2007 at 10:49 PM

Colmes is intellectually disadvantaged by being an UBERliberal…it impedes one’s thought capacity by filling the brain with mindless drivel…….

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 10:50 PM

I think they should pare down the next debate to 3 candidates.

djohn669 on May 15, 2007 at 10:51 PM

I think Huckabee would be a great VP candidate. He’ll whip Obama’s ass when he accepts to be Hillary’s running mate.

I think Rudy did well, but Mitt Romney appeared the most presidential of them all. Tie?

SouthernGent on May 15, 2007 at 10:51 PM

The sad part of it all……it is the current administration who will decide the fate of this election.
Unless they get off their bhinds and slaps down congress and burns down terror networks Billary takes the walk down Pennsylvania avenue. All these candidates can sound as tough on terror as they want but if the public thinks Iraq is lost then the GOP doesn’t have a chance. The American Idol crowd will kick Jack Bauer’s ass.

Watts is great and one of the best Conservative Blacks in the US. It would also neutralize Obama as VP for the most part.

Fred/Watts for me.

Tim Burton on May 15, 2007 at 10:53 PM

Fabulous ticket! I agree BUT JC Watts is out of politics and the public eye right now…altho so was Cheney! I think this is absolutely brilliant! I really admire JCW and he (as another Southerner) really brings another view that is SO lacking to the ticket. WOW..GREAT idea!

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 10:56 PM

SouthernGent on May 15, 2007 at 10:57 PM

STEELE!
He’s there commenting when he should be running!
(at least as Veep)

WastelandMan on May 15, 2007 at 10:57 PM

labwrs good points…

My take:
Romney started strong, then the others slammed him.
Hunter.. May be my new favorite.
Rudy.. not as over as I thought
McCain.. fat lady singing
Tancredo..breathing still, pulse weak
Huccabee..suprising but too little too late
Thompson..weak
Paul… Who is this guy? Can you troll a debate?

BadBrad on May 15, 2007 at 10:59 PM

Tancredo makes a good point with his desire to get together with Jack.

I would vote for Richardson before I would vote for Ron Paul. After seeing him tonight I’m certain there is something mentally wrong with him. Maybe he has Alzheimer’s?

Rudy looked good but Newt won the debate. :oP

DannoJyd on May 15, 2007 at 10:59 PM

Oh yea… Romney + Assault weapons ban = me voting elsewhere

BadBrad on May 15, 2007 at 11:00 PM

Watts is great on the war and great on immigration but I like him best because he complimented The Gitmo Cookbook on Don Imus. Sales shot way up that day. :-)

WastelandMan on May 15, 2007 at 11:00 PM

Mitt just made the point about how our soldiers ARE treated.

TheBigOldDog on May 15, 2007 at 11:02 PM

As a Southerner, a Georgian and a woman, I simply will NOT vote for Newt. I admire him, I like him BUT he is a faithless philanderer who broke the news to his wife (I think #2) he was leaving her while she was in hospital with cancer…and cheated on the next wife with current wife he “met in church”…ummmmmm…….no. I think policy wise he is brilliant but as a leader…he is a CAD..period
STEELE…yep..see him in there as a VP with NO problem! Altho I do like JCW a bit better for his experience but both are GREAT men who would serve this country VERY well!
And set up as the next Pres a black Conservative…ironic and Lincoln (whom I personally despise) would have a continued legacy. (Lincoln was right for all the wrong reasons and wrong execution of the Northern Aggression–just my opinion)

labwrs on May 15, 2007 at 11:03 PM
