Breaking: Jerry Falwell in “gravely serious” condition after being found unconscious; Update: Falwell dies, says AP; Update: Falwell’s in hell, says Phelps

Just across on Fox. No details yet, but the death wishes should be flowing like wine soon on nutroots blogs. Keep an eye out, and stand by.

Update: He’s at the hospital in Lynchburg, unconscious and, according to one source, being given CPR.

Update: They’re getting warmed up at DU. Here’s a particularly nice image. Meanwhile, the Kossacks debate just how much like Hitler Falwell really is and beg each another not to descend to the level of “the wingers,” death wishes apparently being a hallmark of the right-wing blogosphere in KloudKuckooland.

Update: According to Fox News, the AP is reporting that Falwell has died. I wonder how the candidates will deal with this at the debate tonight.

Update: The Kossack comments are getting nice and hot now. And here’s your quote of the day at DU. They’ve actually closed that thread and opened another one, where they’re already going full steam.

Anyone following HuffPo? I’m heading over now.

Update: Comments appear to be closed.

Update: McClatchy has already posted an impressively detailed obit.

Update: Weasel Zippers is keeping tabs on Think Progress, where they’re drinking the wine straight from the cask.

Update: Ben Smith snarks, “And so this evening’s question is how glowingly John McCain will describe his former antagonist.”

Update: Early condolences from Pat Robertson, Mitt, McCain, and — Al Sharpton.

Update: A little sunshine from one of John Edwards’s favorite bloggers.

Update: Bob Owens is doing a little lefty round-up himself.

Update: This has got to be apocryphal. Doesn’t it?

The reaction from the reporters? Grins and chuckles mostly. One grizzled veteran journalist said, “I hope they (CNN) remember all the horrible things he said.”

Another reporter simply said, “It is a good day.”

Update: No tears at TMZ.

Update: Poor Jerry. All that gay-bashing and he still couldn’t earn Fred Phelps’s respect. Meanwhile, in Frisco’s Castro district, gay activists are planning an “anti-memorial.” Attendees are asked to bring Tinky Winky dolls.

I don’t wade in that water, when I already know what flotsam and jetsam I’ll encounter. Those people are so eaten up with their own hatred that their souls are already two miles down where no light penetrates.

I suspect the netroots’ degree of happiness about this is inversely proportional to their sadness about the death of Arafat.

JammieWearingFool on May 15, 2007 at 1:19 PM

I bought a copy of Falwell’s Liberty University study bible. It is a thoroughly annotated version of the King James text.

I recommend it to the curious. You don’t have to agree with Falwell’s theology or politics, but you should at least disabuse yourself of any media-created notion that Falwell leads a bunch of uneducated fundamentalists. Their study bible is as dense as any other academic text I’ve ever read, but with a refreshing lack of transgressive deconstructionism (or whatever else they call Comparative Lit gobbledegook these days).

Get well, Rev. I haven’t always approved of your methods or conclusions, but you’ve proved to any rational observer that you have a heart for the lost.

i have very little love for Falwell who I’ve frankly thought to be a self righteous fool who speaks more for his pocketbook and power then faith or G-d. I still wish him the best though.

Our prayers are with him and his family.

Without the Moral Majority there might not have been a Reagan presidency. Or, without Reagan there might not have been a moral majority. Either way, they complimented each other and the world was better when they did.

They say that Monday’s the worst day for heart attacks, but everyone I’ve known personally, that had one, has been on a Tuesday.

Not that I know Mr Falwell personally. Which I’m sure would be a great relief to him.

I don’t agree with a word he says, but I wish him well.

Tanya on May 15, 2007 at 1:24 PM

I also wish the Reverend Falwell the best. While I disagree with much of the Reverend’s theology, I know that he is a man of integrity and wish him a speedy recovery.

My prayers for him and his family.

Canadian Infidel on May 15, 2007 at 1:43 PM

My condolences to his family and to those who cherish his life.

As a Jew, I had many differences with Rev. Falwell, but he was always a strong supporter of Israel. May he rest in peace.

aunursa on May 15, 2007 at 1:44 PM

I had to read The Moral Majority Report in my (Baptist) high school civics class, and since then I have never put a great deal of stock in Rev. Falwell’s views. Still, he is (was?) a man of much greater intelligence than his detractors gave him credit for. And much as I love Milos Forman, I always felt that the portrayal of Falwell in “The People vs. Larry Flynt” was unduly cartoonish.

SWLiP on May 15, 2007 at 1:46 PM

Not a fan of his either but sorry for his family and hope that their faith will sustain them. I’m sure the Kos Kids, et. al. are celebrating ad nauseum. I guess that’s the difference between the majority of the posters at Hot Air and the lunatics that post on those sites-for the most part, no one here ever wishes ill or pain and sufferring on any of them but they have no qualms about wishing death, torture or “flames of hell” on anyone they disagree with.

I had plenty of reasons not to like Falwell not the least of which were the numerous times he’d stick his foot in his mouth especially in his comments about Jews (G-d doesn’t hear our prayers, the anti-christ will be a jewish male). Having said that, RIP and my prayers go to his family. I didn’t like him but I don’t hate him or think he’s a demon.

Defector01 on May 15, 2007 at 1:53 PM

RIP, Rev Falwell.

Bryan on May 15, 2007 at 1:56 PM

I’m Catholic, but I had a surprising reaction of crying hard when I said a prayer for him. It’s just that even though religious doctrines and methods of bringing our religious beliefs to the public square may divide us, you can’t say that Rev. Falwell didn’t love God and Jesus with all his heart and tried to serve Him as he believed the Bible set forth. I imagine the God I worship telling this man who served His children on the earth “Welcome home, son.”

I’ve never cared for Rev. Falwell. Him and Pat Robertson struck me as the wrong way to be a mainstream Christian.

That said, may God grant peace and grace to his family.

I don’t know Jerry Falwell and I have no idea what he taught or believed, but I know that all men go to their maker at death and I pray he will recieve the mercy and forgiveness for his weaknesses that I will need when I do the same. Best wishes to his family and I hope all the good that he ever did will continue onward in his absence.

I, too, had my issues with many of his views, particularly what he said after the 9/11 attacks about how homosexuals, feminists, and others caused the attacks to happen. However, his sudden death today saddens me.

RIP, Dr. Falwell. My condolences to your family and to your flock.

It was somewhat cartoonish, but only somewhat. Flynt certainly went further out of his way to be an asshole than the film suggests — that’s Flynt’s whole schtick — but Falwell actually made Flynt what he is by throwing a very public hissy-fit about it all and resorting to a lawsuit that tried to do an end run around New York Times v. Sullivan.

Now what we need is a good Iranian-style wake, where they carry the corpse through the streets and mobs rip bits off of it.

Of course, in this case, that might not be done out of reverence, and some of the fingers doing the ripping might be masculine, but with a fresh coat of nail gloss …

Falwell may not have been perfect – who is? – but he loved the Lord. Jesus is embracing him right now and saying, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

JinxMcHue on May 15, 2007 at 2:34 PM

I had the honor of meeting the man in person. Although he made statements that I as a christian did not agree with, he was a man that truly loved God and wanted the conservative voice to be heard. He did a great job on that, and now he is at home to be with the Lord. He is better of there than us here.

Quality Krazy at Kos:

At around 10:50 AM ET today, my longtime companion Barbara announced that she had just been visited by a “Terror Bird” in her dreams before awakening. She has a long history of dreaming of men as they die, including Hirohito and Yul Brynner…

It squawked at her, wanting to do her harm, but was not very large…

Barbara had a meeting scheduled in a high floor of the north tower of the WTC, early on morning of 9/11, which was canceled at the last minute.

Reality based, indeed.

John from WuzzaDem on May 15, 2007 at 2:41 PM

I don’t usually trust wikipedia, but I read up on JF and WOW! He was pretty opinionated wasn’t he? His efforts to take back this country from the idiots of the 60’s and 70’s will be his greatest achievement as far as my life is affected. Now, as soon as the idiot left of this generation wises up, the US will get back to the moral country it was meant to be.

I’m a member of Thomas Road, and my husband teaches at Liberty. My husband is up at the church right at an impromptu service. I didn’t know Falwell Oother than his well-publicized comments) before we moved here, but I have really grown to love him. The idiots who are rejoicing in his death really have no idea who he really was. It’s their loss. He loved people, and if he had the opportunity to be around someone who wished him that much ill, would have treated them with respect and dignity.

He was truly one of the funniest guys I have ever been around. Things will continue to grow here on the foundation that Falwell has laid. I’m sad for our congregation and most of all his family (my kids are friends with his grandchildren), but I’m not sad for him. He loved the Lord and is without a doubt having a great time. :)

honora on May 15, 2007 at 2:27 PM

Is it so much to ask that one have compassion for the family and friends of one who has just passed? It is sad that political discourse in our country has deteriorated to this extent. To a large extent, this is a result of the pernicious legacy of the “Political as Personal” left to us by 60s radicalism and feminism: “You are my political opponent, therefore you must be my personal enemy as well. It is not enough to defeat you politically, you must personally be destroyed and humiliated so as never to be a threat again.” Honora and others, ask yourself this question: Do you really want to live that way? What does this anger and hatred accomplish for you? This sort of hatred eats you up from the inside, leaving you nothing but a shell.

I don’t like Senator Reid or Speaker Pelosi’s politics–I think they’re dangerous and foolish; but should something unfortunate happen to them, nor do I personally hate them. I would not gloat here or anywhere else; I would give their families my condolences during their time of loss because that’s the human thing to do. Now yes, I will dance a jig when we get Osama and/or Zawahiri–but that’s a different matter entirely–those individuals and their lackeys have earned my hatred and disgust.

Please, jettison this pernicious and evil notion of the “Political as Personal”.
