Video: Steve Emerson and Alan Colmes go at it over anti-Semitic DePaul professor

posted at 7:45 pm on May 11, 2007 by Bryan

Terrorism expert Steve Emerson duked it out with Alan Colmes last night over Norman Finkelstein, a clearly anti-Israel professor who wrote his own version of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and who is about to receive tenure at DePaul University. Colmes, who is Jewish himself, once again took the anti-Jew side and stood up for the professor by taking the legalistic view that because Finkelstein hasn’t uttered the magic words “the Holocaust never happened” in print or in public he isn’t a Holocaust denier, even though the man’s books, scholarship and associations make it pretty clear where his thinking is on the subject.

In other news, Alan Colmes fails to recognize that a bird that quacks and waddles on webbed feet is in fact a duck. Hey, did you hear the duck say it was a duck? Exactly.

So here’s the evidence against Finkelstein. As Emerson pointed out, Finkelstein hangs out with Holocaust deniers like David Irving. He is often praised in Holocaust denial “scholarship.” He cheers for Hezbollah terrorists anytime they kill Israelis. He’s called Elie Wiesel a “clown” for his life’s work making sure that we never forget the Holocaust. And he wrote that book, The Holocaust Industry, which according to CAMERA even the NYT slammed for its naked anti-Semitism while calling Finkelstein “juvenile,” “arrogant” and “stupid.” The man also doesn’t know his history from a hole in the ground, if the CAMERA article is even close to accurate. He’s been fired in the past by different universities for all sorts of things and once publicly advocated assassinating Alan Dershowitz. I’m no fan of Dershowitz, but that’s over the top. But evidently all of that is good enough to earn tenure at DePaul.

Anyway, here’s a transcript of the Emerson-Colmes argument. If you’re scoring on the narrow point of whether Finkelstein has ever uttered the magic words “the Holocaust never happened,” then you have to score the match for Colmes. If logic and facts are your guide, then Emerson has the better and more substantive argument by far. Either way, DePaul ought to think twice about granting Finkelstein tenure.

Transcript:

COLMES: Steve, you’re absolutely wrong about this. This is a guy who has actually been praised by two scholars of the Holocaust …. and he is not a Holocaust denier as people have suggested. He is actually someone who believes people are using anti-Semitism to silence critical discussion in this country.

EMERSON: Alan, you can cherry-pick all you want. The fact is he hangs out with Holocaust deniers —

COLMES: Guilt by association —

EMERSON: No, no, it’s his association.

COLMES: He’s never denied the Holocaust.

EMERSON: Listen to me Alan, he associates with Holocaust deniers. They are his friends, David Irving and others.

COLMES: Why does [unintelligible] praise him?

EMERSON: You can cherry-pick all you want, but you just made a statement that it’s guilt by association. It’s his deliberate guilt by association. He wants to association with Holocaust deniers.

COLMES: abide by his statements and his scholar [unintelligible] which is praised —

EMERSON: He’s an absolute liar. —

COLMES: He was praised by the political science department at Depaul —

EMERSON: MMHMM.

[crosstalk]

COLMES: — and praised by the faculty in general and was offered tenure until somebody got in the way and that somebody is Alan Dershowitz and wrote a critical book and Dershowitz is trying to deny [unintelligible].

EMERSON: Alan, I will take Alan Dershowitz’s credentials over this guy, Norman Finkelstein anytime of the day, anytime of the year, anytime of the century. Alan Dershowitz’ being compared to Norman Finkelstein is like comparing a grand scholar to —

[crosstalk]

COLMES: He has a personal vendetta and that’s why this is happening.

EMERSON: The personal vendetta was started by Norman Finkelstein because he wanted to get some kind of attention.

The way they are oriented on the set, I think it would have to be a jab if Sean used his left hand.

This so called professor is brainwashing our future leaders to hate all things Western. What is the Right doing to fight back against the Left’s headlock on education?

Tony737 on May 11, 2007 at 8:12 PM

Perhaps Sean just likes to give Colmes enough rope to hang himself? Luckily for Hannity, all he has to do is sit there….night…after…night

ej_pez on May 11, 2007 at 8:20 PM

The Crypt Keeper is an absolute disgrace. I can’t take the show anymore. The Crypt Keeper spouts the Left talking points verbatim and Hannity acts like Saint Peter with his lists of sins that he read Ad nauseam rather than trust his own ability to debate.

TheBigOldDog on May 11, 2007 at 8:24 PM

How it can be claimed that Emerson “went” at it with Colmes is a mystery. Emerson stammered and stuttered about 10 substanital words while Colmes perseverated as much as he could.

Agreed. It’s only interesting when somone else (e.g. Mark Steyn) sits in for Hannity.

Watching Colmes is as relaxing as watching a man strolling blithely on a railroad track, after having warned him at 1:50, 1:55, 1:56, 1:57 1:58, 1:59 that the 2:00 train is due.

I take it that I am not the one one who finds Colmes a fast talking, intellectually dishonest left winger who is thoroughly disgusting.

Phil Byler on May 11, 2007 at 8:39 PM

I saw this exchange. I’ve never seen Emerson get that upset before. Colmes probably googled right before the show was taped. He doesn’t have the intellectual capacity to absorb what this is all about. He’s just a sound bite guy.

There are worse. The slow-talkers actually irritate me the most. Their pacing seems more deliberately manipulative.

Hannity owes everything to Colmes.
Who else could make Sean look like a genius every single work-day of the week?

Colmes, who is Jewish himself, once again took the anti-Jew side …

Bryan

Uh…Bryan? Bry? Bryzie?

Bit of a shocker, there; a Jewish American leftist taking an anti-Jewish position, huh?

Jaibones on May 12, 2007 at 12:40 AM

Some men were born to lie, Norman Finkelstein is such a man. This guy is able to tell lies big enough to make Bill Clinton blush. Remember “Baghdad Bob” the “Minister of Information” for Saddam Heusen ? Baghdad Bob was a pretty big liar but he had nothing on Norman Finkelstein. Have you ever had someone lie to you with such boldness that you were left stunned, astonished and speechless ? That’s the kind of thing that is Norman Finkelstein’s specialty. He is a very useful idiot of the left and he receives the highest praise from every bastion of anti-Semitism. He’s a Jewish man that hates the Jews and Israel, he is pathetic, and I guess, a professor at DePaul.

Maxx on May 12, 2007 at 1:17 AM

The Left has been quietly realizing something about itself, ever since it staged the “Save Saddam” marches in 03 and the issue was no longer deniable: the ideologies of the Left and Nazism have a lot in common.

Sometimes you’ll see a Leftist tiptoe up to this with excuses and rationalizations (like the video clip here), but what I’ve been waiting for is the full-blown realization and “coming out” about Left/Nazi commonalities:

1. Hate America – check!
2. Blame the Jews (Israel) – check!
3. Collectivism – check!
4. The State uber alles – check!

It’s just a matter of time, but at some point a promiment Leftist will go public and claim that “Hitler wasn’t so bad after all”. Their automatic sympathy for Palestinian Jew-killers is fuel enough, but what I think is pushing them toward Third Reich-ism more than anything is their refusal to side with the USA in a war against the worst Jew-haters since Hitler. The ill-logic of this has been rotting their brains since 9/11.

It makes no difference that many of these Leftists are Jews themselves. We have every right to question their sense of religion as well as their patriotism. It’s no more of a mystery than Michael Moore or Rosie O’Donnell praising Islamofascists yet calling themselves “patriots”. Right…

That the Left finds its inner Nazi will be a good thing for the rest of us, since it will help dispel the rancid lie that nazism is somehow “far right”, and not a form of totalitarianism with far more in common with Marx.

“Caling Norman Finkelstein, calling Norman Finkelstein. Your cleaners have called. Your Brownshirt and Swastika are ready for pickup.”

georgej on May 12, 2007 at 3:38 AM

To Halley: It is not a recent thing that the ideologies of the left have many things in common with German National Socialism. I receommend for reading British historian Richard Overy’s “The Dictators.” It is an in depth study comparing Stalin’s Soviet Bolshevik Communism with Hitler’s Gernam National Socialism, and the conclusion is that they eerily had much in common — cult of personality leadership, command economies, primacy of the State, one party dictatorhip, utopian based ideologies (race based for National Socialism and class based for Bolshevik Communism), hostility to traditional religion, law warped to the needs of the state and official ideology, heroic art, use of concentration camps and terror.

Phil Byler on May 12, 2007 at 8:57 AM

Ironic … Norman Finkelstein is working from the Joeseph Goebbels playbook.

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

Read also The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek. It’s about the totalitarianism of collectivism and in one chapters argues that the Nazis were the culmination of decades of German socialism.

It is disheartning to see a people (American Jews) so willingly participate in their own extinction so soon after the Holocaust. As usual, we never learn from history, even when it is well documented. Everytime anyone ever says “never forget”, you can bet your ass they will, almost instantly. The democratic party is almost blatantly anti-semetic, yet Jews keep voting for them. You can’t help people that don’t want to help themselves.

bmac on May 12, 2007 at 2:30 PM

If Norman Finkelstein considers himself to be a Jew, I’m embarrassed to call myself one. Okay, Norman – Here’s my challenge – let’s see if you’ve GOT a pair, because I don’t think you do: Why’ncha go break bread with all the maniacs from Hizbollah and Hamas that claim to “love death more than Jews love life”? Are you ready to DEFEND all the “Palestinian” imams who exort their Islamic faithful to “kill Americans and Jews wherever you find them, in any country…”? If not, then SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN. As for DePaul, if the powers that be want to give this idiot tenure, they can have him.

SpartRan on May 12, 2007 at 3:10 PM

Isn’t De Paul supposed to be a Catholic university? If you go to their website you’ll see sparse claims about their Catholic nature and heritage. You also cannot find out if there is a church or chapel on campus. They recommend that their students go see a lecture or some sporting event when they have some off time (wouldn’t want to go to Mass, Confession or Bible study; that would be too Catholic).

John Paul called the Catholic university from the heart of the Church. It was actually a criticism of what passes for a university today in the Western world. De Paul’s website is Exhibit A of what it means to be not Catholic and not a university. Unfortunately, Exhibit B is giving tenure to bozos like Finkelstein.

cmay on May 12, 2007 at 3:14 PM

As for Alan Colmes, he’s little more than a p.c. apologist and a tool of the Left.

Finkelstein and Chomsky are upset that fate tagged them with Jewish sounding names so they decided to use that as a credential to attack Jews. After all, they’re Jewish, that gives them ‘ultimate moral authority’ to deny Jew hatred, particularly on their part. It’s the same reason why the ISM uses tools like Adam Shapiro. The left only considers Jews authentically Jewish if they attack traditional Judaism and the politics of the Jewish community.

If you handed Finkelstein a Chumash (aka the Torah, the first 5 books of the Hebrew bible) he probably wouldn’t know which side was the front of the book. As far as the so-called ‘sea of the Talmud’, he’d drown.

I’m getting a little bit annoyed and tired about leftist and ‘progressive’ Jews who are complete ignoramuses about Judaism yet they want to wave their severed foreskin as some kind of moral credibility.
