Shrewd of them to get other women to do the hassling. It comes off more like fashion advice, or some grandmotherly admonition about how a proper young lady should dress, than an implied threat to have offenders dragged off to a car by male police. One of whom appears always to be nearby, as a tacit warning.

Update: Via Sugiero. Too good to bury in an update at the bottom of the page so it earns the bump.

Better than the Islamic thought police.

My 8 year old grandson was near my computer when I was watching the video of that woman being dragged off screaming not too long ago. He asked what was going on and I told him. Even he recognized that this issue is stupid and said so. Stupid in that dragging women off for improper dress is 7th century thinking and has no place in in the 21st. (My words, not his. He said STUPID!)

It’s great to see that Irans biggest problem is young women that run amiss of some ancient dress code.

Oddly enough, they’re more like the Democrats than you’d guess at first blush (not that either Dems or Islamofascists blush all that much).
Both groups are so persuaded that they’re correct that they need not give any consideration to any other view. The other side is simply demonized as outside “social norms.” After all– no need to debate somebody who is outside social norms.

Where are the NAGS? Ireland, Schroeder, Gandy, Hillary? They only care about womens rights when it comes to killing their unborn children.

The dress code nazis sound like some local democrat condo board members here in south florida. You can’t get in the elevator in a bathing suit, you can’t back your car in your spot, your flowers are the wrong color, your door knocker is offesive, take down that American flag in your window, your door mat is illegal, etc., etc. No wonder liberals never say a peep about this kind of harrassment. They embrace it on a daily basis.
roninacreage on May 10, 2007 at 9:20 AM
Yeah, this is wrong. No Question. But our culture is not without it’s own misogyny and denigration of women. Only here they hand you a grammy instead of stuffing you in a police car. They lack rights. We lack responsibility. Theirs in the name of gov’t control. Ours in the name of riches. Both hurt our societies.
Buck Turgidson on May 10, 2007 at 9:21 AM
This kind of behavior is not just relative to Tehran. In the mid 1990s, when my friends and I were working in hospitals in Riyadh, we were often accosted by the dress police, men not women. The presence of police is significant. The muttawah, or dress police, are pretty harmless, other than spitting, but if the police were with them, you had better cover your head.

All I can say is that when you have this much power over any group of people, there has to be a huge backlash and underground growing at a fast clip.
bloggless on May 10, 2007 at 9:38 AM
Why on earth you would post this is beyond me.
kmcguire on May 10, 2007 at 9:38 AM
Well, one example would be the Akon backlash. I hardly consider my view a radical one. If you do, it’s your right to say so.
Buck Turgidson on May 10, 2007 at 9:45 AM
I’m actually encouraged by this. The more ridiculous and backwards these folks become, the more alienated they will be from the world and their own populous.
Unlike centuries, even decades, before, the people of the world have access and communication with each other, some Iranians spend years overseas or in western schools, and subsequently get a taste for freedom…therein the seeds are planted.
If we can hobble their nuclear program and wait them out, Iran will crumble from the inside without a single US Marine getting so much as a hangnail in that litter box.
Alden Pyle on May 10, 2007 at 9:48 AM
And these are the people that the libs think are reasonable enough to deal with on nuclear power?

I loved it when the young guy in jeans and t-shirt walked past and practically shook his head at what was happening. I got the impression he deliberately moved into camera view. It high-lighted the crassness of what’s being done to women there, while men can dress and do as they please.

where I live, seeing a woman in a headscarf or a burka is very uncommon - but last week in the grocery store we saw a woman and her daughter in full islamic garb. My daughter said, “Momma! WHY is that woman wearing that big black dress? Isn’t she hot?” I told her like it is: “that Islam is a repressive religion and unfortunately, muslim women don’t have as many rights as we do. Aren’t you glad we live in a society where girls can go to school, wear what they want and have the rights we do?” She then said, “Do the BOYS have to wear those things?” told her, “No, Islam values men more than women.” Needless to say, she was stunned.
I said all this very loudly, not caring. Several
other people in the produce department heard me and shook their heads in agreement.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all those liberals who SAY they are for women’s rights put their money where their mouths are?

I’m going to step out of line here and compare accosting someone for those clothes to many people here insisting that police in this country should arrest illegal immigrants, simply based on whether someone was born north or south of the Rio Grande, regardless of how hard they might have been working for the past, say, 40 years, and regardless of whether they have been scrupulous in paying their taxes. Sure they are violating the law, but so are the women not wearing the clothes they are supposed to. Those women value something more important than obeying that law, as do the parents of impoverished children do when they come here without a visa to feed themselves and their children.

My first (and only) conversation with a veiled woman ocurred fifteen years ago at the Morocco pavillion at Epcot Center in Florida. It was a blisteringly hot August day. I politely asked a Moroccan “greeter” if she was hot or if the garment actually kept her cool by keeping the sun off. What I got was a lecture about how Moroccan women wear the hajib to honor their culture and their religion. It was really funny — she had the same deadly-serious and self-righteous tone of your typical university-campus feminist. So I’m not surprised that the NAGs are silent on the hijab — they recognize a bit of themselves in some of the radical Islamic women.
Another memory: we had a number of “Persians” at my elite Northeastern university. As I recall, most of them had fled Iran during the fall of the Shah and settled in Canada. They always referred to themselves as Persians, never Iranian. None of them seemed overtly religious. Most of them were male, but there were four or five women as well. These women were earnest intellectuals with the fashion sense that you would expect from same. They were all beautiful and desirable, almost in spite of their intentions.
Even as a mostly non-political 19-year-old, I would look at these women, and remember that they had fled the Ayatollah and his burka-clad revolutionaries. I couldn’t help but disrespect the kind of man who would want to cover up such women. I’ve had a dim view of fundamentalist Islamic masculinity ever since — and this was well before they ever seemed like a terrorist threat.

Pulling My Hair Out, good for you. Anton, a great post!
Catie96706 on May 10, 2007 at 12:07 PM
Gosh, now I want to hire a small child to go around with me just so when we come in contact with burqa-clad women, the kid can ask me why they wear burqas!!
Well played, PullingMyHairOut!
I find burqas suspicious…like people walking around with ski masks on. Outlaw them, so that, if they don’t like it, they don’t come here. We really should be safe-guarding our culture, rather than bowing to theirs.
Discrimination? You betcha! But I discriminate against others too….I don’t allow criminals/drug addicts/thieves/rapists/murderers in my house.
tickleddragon on May 10, 2007 at 12:56 PM
The thing that most supporters of these garments don’t consider… The face, whether you like it or not, defines the individual. No face, no individual identity. Which is really why these idiot male muslims support it. Women have no identity outside of being property for men.
The argument that these women like it?? Well, some slaves professed to like being in the “employ” of their owners. It’s called FEAR.

Calling honora, Nonfactor, gmcjetpilot and JaHerer22, who are mostly conspicuously missing on these types of threads. Please explain your side on the deafening silence on what ought to be one of your main fights.
The thought of a “dress police” is ridiculous in and by itself, and needs international media ridiculing. Where are these do-gooders?
In com*unism the male police slit our mini-skirts in the street, with many people around, preferrably at bus stations, then sending us home like that. It was a badge of honor, every time, so long as we kept our mouths shut. Otherwise, we’d have ended up in a dark place.
No woman there, however, would have contemplated on lecturing another, not even the com*ie bitc*es. They loved/enjoyed everything Western.

You think these ladies have it bad? Try living a day in Paris Hilton’s shoes!
RightWinged on May 10, 2007 at 2:40 PM
In this society where the mantra is “A Woman Has The Right To Choose” which I whole heartily agree. Acceptable behavior and dress goes alongside the outrageous and bizarro without question, well to a degree and without fashion police enforcement. Although, I can’t fathom Mr. Blackwell’s Worst Dressed for the life of me.
But you notice it’s the clerics enforcing this *culture* with the motherly advice and police in proximity to confront the young women.
I wouldn’t be surprised arrests and stoning will be far behind. With more Muslim immigrants coming to this country and demanding their cultural left behinds to be enforced here, how long will it be before we see this here?

lorien1973 on May 10, 2007 at 4:20 PM
It’s not too far behind. The big mosque on I-7 near Cincinnati sent people out to the muslims living here telling them it was time for them to go back to acting like true muslims. I personally knew someone who got the knock at the door, she used to be happy and would tell her husband “Get it yourself, we live in America now.” But sence then she’s wearing her full burka.

Palestinian fetus killed in crossfire
NABLUS, West Bank - A Palestinian woman in the seventh month of her pregnancy lost her unborn baby on Thursday when she was caught in crossfire between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants, her family said.
Ahmed Bisharat, a nurse at Rafidia Hospital in Nablus where Maha Katouni was treated, said surgeons discovered the fetus’ head had been shattered by a bullet.
The Israeli army said there was an exchange of fire in the area in which two Palestinian militants and one Israeli soldier were wounded. It was investigating the Palestinian report, but could not confirm other injuries “at this point,” the army spokesman’s office said.
The wounded woman’s husband, Rafat Katouni, said his house was in the line of fire between Israeli troops on a daytime arrest raid and Palestinian gunmen.
He and his 29-year-old wife had decided to move their three children into another room when a bullet entered through a window, hitting her in the back and exiting through her abdomen, he said.
A bullet in the bloodied room where she was hit had lodged inside the wooden frame of a mirror.
It took about 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive because soldiers held it up, her husband said. The army was looking into the claim, but noted that it routinely bars vehicles from entering battle zones and said the Israeli forces immediately left the area after the shootout.

I can’t think of anything a government could do to thoroughly piss its women off more than have fashion nazis roaming the streets lecturing them that they look like Western whores or actually arresting them for showing their hair. Those are gonna be some scalded cat mad women who will just absolutely never forget. Never, never, never.
And didja notice how when one woman got pulled over one or two other women stepped up to her side as backup?
Heck, those Iranian mullahs are working overtime to foment a revolution against themselves. The only thing left for us to do to push this to the tipping point is ship the Persian women the latest fashion magazines and some guns.

I really, really hope we’ve got covert operations going that are sneaking porn into muslim countries. It doesn’t have to be extreme filthy porn, just some pictures of topless (preferably middle-eastern-looking) women. We have to give these people a sense that seeing women uncovered is natural and desirable. We have to make them see efforts to cover the women up as being repressive.

“Accept the social norms of this country.”
Gee, if Americans even thought of asking foreigners, and illegals for that matter, to accept American society and assimilate, the multiculturalist police would be on us just like these muslim bullies.
This country is no different, it is being suppressed by the Left, no wonder they get along so well. The Left opresses the same way these people do, except the Left is stupid enough to think their “genious” can reason with these people.
jeffersonschild on May 10, 2007 at 6:26 PM
Yeah, because not covering your head properly is a crime about as comparable to sneaking into another country illegally, obtaining fake identification, stealing somebody else’s social security number, and not paying your taxes to boot. Sheesh.
And regardless of whether they been sending their children to our schools at taxpayer expense, leeching off government programs, engaging in frivolous lawsuits for tripping and falling (an illegal immigrant favorite, right there), driving while intoxicated, driving uninsured, having gangbanger kids, ad infinitum. Here is a hint: the crime isn’t what side of the Rio Grande they were born on. It is what they did to get to the other side and what they’ve done since to stay on that side and what they may have done to others while staying on that side.
tommy1 on May 10, 2007 at 6:34 PM
Pedestrian, I would describe your statements as ‘moral equivalence on turbo’.
There are just so many things wrong with your statements, that I really don’t know where to begin. Secondly, I’m sure there is absolutely no point in arguing with people like yourself. So I’m not going to bother other than to say “move to Iran”.
Aylios on May 10, 2007 at 6:34 PM
There are no words to fully encompass and augment how horribly, horribly wrong your statement is.
People who wish to come to this country have a legal means to do so through our Homeland Security department. It is long, and it is difficult, as anything worth having is. However, there is a legal means for someone to move from their country to ours and to legally enjoy the fruits that their hard work in this nation provides them.
However, under Iran’s bass-ackward sharia douchebaggery, women are not allowed any legal means to dress the way they desire. They are trapped by barbaric customs designed by imbeciles to prevent any possible hint of equality of gender in order to foster their own artificial superiority.
If a man applies for a work visa, comes to this country, learns the predominant language, pays his taxes, swears an oath of allegiance, he is an American. It matters not what he does for a living or where he originally came from…if he follows the law, he is equal to you, me, all other citizens of our country and is afforded the same rights and privileges that that citizenship provides. A woman in Iran WILL NEVER be equal to a man in that same country, even if she was born there.
So, pedestrian, I hope you can now fathom the monumental idiocy that your statement presents.

Each year there is a day where they start accepting applications for green cards for the coming year. Every year the quota is exceeded by far on the very first day. To say that there is a legal way is to ignore the fact that if you don’t hit the lottery it’s not going to happen. If I was not fortunate enough to be born here or to hit that lottery I can’t say I wouldn’t succumb to the temptation to move here illegally for the sake of my children’s future. My reaction to being accosted for breaking that law wouldn’t be so different from the wonderfully courageous woman in the second video.
I’m just struck by the inconsistency of being full bore for the rights of the unborn without also recognizing the that people born in another country do not have any fewer rights in the eyes of God. There are certainly legitimate concerns among terrorist and other criminals immigrating, but the overall sense I get about the immigration debate is that it is more about job preferences for people who are fortunate enough to have a vote, which is what I am comparing to the subjugation of muslim women. Solving the problem of criminals immigrating is better solved by making it less likely for people to want to immigrate illegally so that the ones who should be stopped become more visible. People who would object to that would object on the grounds of job preferences, which as I said is against equal treatment of all people.

Pedestrian,
What everyone else said above. You’re wrong. You comment as if living in the U.S. is the God-given right of every human being. It isn’t. No other developed country on Earth allows people in, and to be treated as well or better than citizens, if they don’t come in through legal channels. But for some reason everyone thinks we’re evil if we attempt to apply the same rules that are applied to us by the rest of the world.

Try trucking your butt south of the border and see if you can demand the same from the Mexican gov. Or try north to Canada.
Seems we’re the only country on the planet that is not allowed to secure and police our border. Everyone else treats invaders like invaders. And YES, illegals are INVADERS.
