Audio: Fred! on the Second Amendment

posted at 9:57 pm on May 10, 2007 by Allahpundit

Actually, it’s an ode to originalist jurisprudence within the context of a discussion of the Second Amendment, with a little Times-bashing thrown in for good measure. In red meat terms, that’s like the difference between a hamburger and a bacon double cheeseburger drizzled with pureed prime rib. Deee-lish!

The news peg here, incidentally, is the D.C. Circuit’s decision a few days ago to deny a rehearing of that big Second Amendment decision that was handed down in March. That’s great news for gun-rights supporters: the nightmare scenario was that they’d grant the rehearing and reverse the ruling, which would have had the doubly bad effect of reinstituting gun-control laws in D.C. while also giving the Supreme Court a convenient excuse not to hear the case itself. As it stands, the Supremes can either take a pass on it, in which case the gun-rights decision remains the leading precedent in D.C., or they can grant cert and finally deal with the Second Amendment’s core issue of individual versus collective rights squarely. Whichever it is, it’s a big deal.

Let me be the first: Fred!

A candidates stance on 2nd Amendment Rights is a primary issue for me on how I vote. Hence the reason I can NEVER vote for Rudy (and on his abortion stance) but Fred! is top on my list.

It’s not just handguns in DC, folks. Your long guns have to be registered and broken down to keep them in your homes.

Makes me want to go out and buy a S&W Model 410 tomorrow in honor of Fred! and the Fouding Fathers!

Unbelievable! No wonder DC is the murder capital of the US. Sitting ducks. Two words: elections matter.

Sheesh.

I’m going to a gun show this weekend at Cashman field in Vegas. The burning question is…

9mm or .40 cal.

Descisions, descisions…

Not only could Fred BE the president, but he could play the president on T.V. too.

Mojave Mark on May 10, 2007 at 10:38 PM

I still can’t believe ABC is running this.

Iblis on May 10, 2007 at 10:41 PM

Just signed up for a firearms safety course.

It’s step one toward getting a concealed carry permit.

I have no intention of purchasing a gun (as of now), but I figure increasing the number of people with permits can’t hurt. Call it my small contribution to supporting the second amendment.

Slublog on May 10, 2007 at 10:49 PM

Mojave Mark: the 40 S&W, definitely. More stopping power without the added heft of a 45 ACP. If you’ve got the bucks, it’s hard to go wrong with the Sig Sauer 40 cal.

Just sayin’.

common sensineer on May 10, 2007 at 11:12 PM

Slublog,

At least treat yourself to a nice little .22 pistol! They’re not terribly expensive to buy or “feed” and they’re tons of fun to shoot. I borrowed one for my safety course and the cop teaching the course nodded his approval.

You can easily run several hundred rounds through one in a single shooting session without a lot of wear and tear on your wrists. It’s a lot easier if you get an Ultimate Cliploader so you don’t have to load all the mags by hand.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’m former infantry and I acknowledge that Sigs rule.

(On topic) It would be nice to have a president that actually knew the constitution and upheld it instead of dismantling it. We go through this drill every 4 years. We think “finally a guy who’s gonna be a REAL conservative.” Then they get to office cuourtesy of our hard work and *pow* they go rubbery on us. Please Fred, be for real.

I’ve been advocating on all the Draft Fred boards for him to do his obligatory “candidate with guns” photo op at the pistol range with a large caliber handgun. No more shotgun sports.

Yeah, Fred must jump in now, everybody’s doing it! It’s all the rage! Are you such a slave to trendiness in real life that you check what kind of purse Paris Hilton is carrying this week so you can keep up with the other kids at the mall? The only justification anyone has come up with for insisting that Thompson declare immediately is that “everybody else is doing it”.
Finances? Do you think nobody is out there lining up pledges? How much of what is already raised is also already spent by those already declared?
What is declared? Will he have to submit a summary of his daily activities to you? You got nothin’….

My Kimber Custom I (1911) is an absolute joy to shoot. They’re a bit pricy but absolutely worth it IMO.

I got a couple Romanian SAR-1 rifles (you know, a dreaded “assault rifle”) with plenty of ammo and ltos of 30 rd. mags. I even got them both some nice Kobra red dot sights. Ak clones are cheap, easy to maintain, cheap ammo, cheap high cap mags and still totally reliable. Sure, I’d like to add a AR-15 someday but to me, the AK-47 is the ultimate short/medium range eifle.

I also got a Henry .22 that I bought used. Big mistake. That thing has been a jam-o-matic since day one and is only trustworthy as a expensive club. Took it to a gunsmith who said it would cost about as much to fix as it would to buy a brand new one. it’s pretty much been gathering dust ever since.

BWAHAHAHAH!

Limerick, the nicest demonstration video available of the M82A1A is here

Nothing else like a Barrett firing Raufoss rounds! Of course for civilian use you can only buy the BMG rounds for an M82.

Freelancer on May 11, 2007 at 6:42 AM

Sublog – I second the recommendation on picking up a .22. Excellent starter, cheap to practice with, and a quality gun will last forever. I picked up a Ruger Mark II over 20 years ago and it’s still one of my favorite guns to shoot. If you want a centerfire I’m a Glock fan. I love the simple user interface.

At least till I can afford the M82…

Back on topic – Go Fred!

alilianstrom on May 11, 2007 at 7:45 AM

As a Republican the Barrett M82 represents a problem for my free market attitudes. The last line on their ad in my first link: ‘There are no competitors’. Hmmmmm….wonder why :)

As for Fred!…..He is in. I am not as red hot over him as I was (just be getting antsy over the election). It is early but it looks like Mitt and Fred! will lead the pack.
Still worried about McCain conjuring up a third party.

Limerick on May 11, 2007 at 8:13 AM

Yeah, ameripundit has linked to a lot of negative stuff about fred? and I’m not sure how he is going to fare if he does eventually get in. I’m dissapointed that Rudy looks to be done. We’ll have to see if someone can take his place leading Hillary in the polls.

Do you really think McCain is that selfish that he’d give the election to Hillary by running independent? He’s got to know he will only take votes away from the conservative candidate.

Right now, deciding between Mitt! and fred? is easy. If fred? decides he will take the plunge he’ll have to earn his stripes through debates and interviews ala Mike Wallace/Matthews asking completely inappropiate questions.

csdeven on May 11, 2007 at 8:37 AM

I just want the strongest candidate also csdeven. One thing for sure is that this extra long campaign is going to make everyone trip up once in awhile.

Yes I fear McCain will do just that. First of all because in his last interview he said ‘the vast majority of people agree with him’…..it is Vermont. He believes this election will be decided by the Blue Dogs and the RINOs. Second, spite. If he doesn’t get the nod I think he will become the ‘Avenger’ and to hell with the consequences.

Limerick on May 11, 2007 at 8:44 AM

Yeah, you’re right. His ego is inflated when people see him as a maverick. And what is more maverick than a third party beating out the status quo?

Thanks for screwing up my day. ;-)

I had the distinct pleasure of firing of firing a CheyTac 200 .408 cal. last weekend. Two factory reps (one ex-SEAL sniper the other ex-marine sniper) from CheyTac (Idaho) flew into the mountain state to deliver for 2 new rifles to SF use (3 Unit guys were there). Fort Bragg’s range didn’t have room, so a doc friend of mine who moonlights as a SF medic asked me if they could use my farm for a couple of days. UNBELIEVABLE. After zeroing the rifles at 100 meters, our first distance target was 1200 meters. After a few calculations, they were scoring continuous hits. Then we moved out to 2100 meters. They scored a hit with the first shot.

CheyTac holds the world “Group at Distance” record of 3 shots/ 16″ pattern/ 2321 meters. Barrett makes a fine rifle, but CheyTac does the record. The ex-SEAL was on Future Weapons when Mack tried their rifle out.

I am 100% civilian, so it was incredible to be a part of that experience. They were all great guys to boot.

Do you really think McCain is that selfish that he’d give the election to Hillary by running independent? He’s got to know he will only take votes away from the conservative candidate.

To the first question, yes. He’s spent 8 years stabbing the president in the back using the prestige he gained with the media to highlight positions antithetical to Republicans and Conservatives; when called on it by the base, he called us names, ie nativists, and so on. To your second statement, I imagine he doesn’t care who he hurts. I can’t believe he even bothered to run as a Republican. He doesn’t like the evangelicals; he took control of the judicial debate with mixed results; yes, we got a couple of good judges in but I think the so called ‘nuclear option’ was a fight we needed to have. Don’t get me started on his immigration statements and the less said about the terrorist bill of rights, the better. I guess he thinks this is still the 70′s and that voters won’t remember his betrayals. Make no mistake, he knows the damage he can do to a real candidate and he doesn’t care.

Did the samples you guys fired have the integral suppressor?

In addition to the increased accuracy, it would be a joy to have the muzzle blast toned down a bit on that round for the sake of your eardrums.

Did the samples you guys fired have the integral suppressor?

The kit comes with a detached threaded suppressor. The weapon with empty clip weighs 27 pounds. The suppressor weighs 3 pounds. It’s a beefy weapon with very little recoil considering the caliber.

With suppressor, you can fire without ear protection but it still by no means silent. Without suppressor a person can hear the report from several miles away.

Keep this in mind, the effective range is 3000 meters. You could shoot a target and his buddies would not hear the report until 5 seconds after impact.

natesnake on May 11, 2007 at 1:22 PM

I can’t wait for freddie boy to get grilled on his pro-choice stance in 1994, McCain-Feingold, and his dismal performance during the Clinton/China connection. We’ll see how well he holds up when he can’t stop filming, get makeup, and shoot another take.

The more I read about him, the more it appears that what people are reacting to is his star power. It also appears that in 2002 he vasilated for a year before pulling out of the race for his senate seat 3 weeks before the filing deadline? Say it ain’t so fred?. And is the rumor true that he fakes his image of a down to earth feller when he shows up to rallys in a beat up red chevy pickup, but when he leaves, he drives a couple of blocks away and then gets into a limo? Say it ain’t so fred?.

Bring it on quick freddie boy so we can find out exactly what the truth is.

csdeven on May 11, 2007 at 1:45 PM

The more I read about him, the more it appears that what people are reacting to is his star power.

Right, because the the many numerous articles, interviews and speeches he’s given in which he’s consistantly and eloquently conveyed conservative posistions couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it. A conservative voting record as Senator couldn’t possibly be it either.

Nah, must be the 20 seconds an episode he’s on screen in “Law and Order” instead.

csdeven on May 11, 2007 at 3:20 PM

Are you saying all his negatives are negated by a bunch of prepared speeches?

No more than I’d say that prepared speeches and statements by Romney, Rudy or McCain negate their negatives.

If there’s been a presidential candidate in the history of the United States of America that was without “negatives”, I sure as hell don’t know who it was.

For the times we live in, Fred’s negatives are vastly outweighed by his positives from the impression I’ve gotten from him- and he’s not been shy about letting his views be known in a manner that would likely drive most professional handlers and campaign managers nuts. Add in the electability factor, and he’s the best- if imperfect- choice.

In contrast, the negatives of Romney, Rudy and McCain are at the core of what’s wrong with a Republican party determined to self-destruct into a “moderate” party. Maybe they’d legislate as conservatives, maybe they wouldn’t- we simply have no way of knowing, since they all have a record that isn’t at all described as “conservative”.

They tried to portray the 50 caliber as a terrorist weapon even though the 50 cal has never been used in crimes. They got our wonderful anti gun police chief, pro illegal alien Bratten, to say the LAPD wanted them banned because they could penetrate a Patrol cars V8 block.

Diane Feinstein and Boxer joined in on the scare mongering writing editorials for the communist La LA times. They both supported the ban because they said;” it could be used to down a jet airliner”!!

All the usual scare tactics and Arnold allowed the ban when he could have sustained a veto.

IMHO-This is unconstitutional, like all other 14,000 gun laws that restrict ownership of guns guaranteed by the 2nd amendment.

And as I pointed out, fred? has some ‘splainin to do about his pro-choice stance in 94 and the facade he puts on to engender himself to the folks. Why does he switch vehicles? That’s dishonest and I’d much rather have an honest Rudy trying to spin his position than a guy who straight up lies about who he is.

In Illinios, the IL Senate just passed a bill OUTLAWING large cap. magazines (11+ rounds). The ban is SO POORLY WRITTEN that certain rifles with an integral magazine that holds more than 10 will be automatically outlawed.

This particular piece of crap was sponsored by Dan Kotkowski, a gun grabber lobbyist who found enough STUPID people to elect him to the state senate. Kotkowski was one of Laurie Dann’s victims who survived, BTW.

Hell yes! Another 1911 advocate. JMB is a firearms God above even Samuel Colt and Kalashnikov IMO.

One thing I did look for when I bought my 1911 was where it was made. I think alot of Springfields (or at least parts of them) are made in Brazil. Their famous XD line is made in Croatia. I don’t know if Browning firearms are made here in the U.S. but I do know Kimber is Made in the USA (Yonkers NY to be exaxct). S&W is in the 1911 business as is SIG I believe.

Oh, factory 1911 mags tend to be somewhat cheap, or at least they were 6 or 7 years ago when I bought mine so I highly recommend Wilson Combat 7 rd. mags for any 1911. They’re pricy but what’s your life worth to you.
