“What a crass solipsist, clod and yahoo O’Donnell is — and what a bad advertisement for both liberalism and lesbianism. I thoroughly enjoyed Donald Trump putting the shiv to her with his eye-opening insults of withering accuracy.”

A solipsist? Never really heard that used as an insult, but in what way is O’Donnell a solipsist?

Nonfactor on May 9, 2007 at 11:34 PM

Maybe she’s a solipsist in that she is un-intellectual. She thinks something is true because she feels it is true, not because she has done serious research or because her thinking is supported by erudition.

To answer your question I need to know, what is a solipsist?

I read the Wikipedia definition andf I still am unsure what that word means.

JayHaw Phrenzie on May 9, 2007 at 11:44 PM

That’s what you get for using Wikipediea. Try an actual dictionary.

Camille Paglia’s column appears on the second Wednesday of each month.

Only in the end on page 4 did she capture my attention.

The rest was an angry lesbian rant on the war, politics, and culture.

Talk about panties in a bunch.

Kini on May 9, 2007 at 11:50 PM

My only hope is that the Manion family doesn’t see that hate.

Donald Trump putting the shiv to her

That must have been traumatic for Donald’s shiv.

My platform calls for a revalorization of the trades (which are related by craftsmanship to the art schools where I have taught for most of my career). Upper-middle-class families should be ready to support their children’s unorthodox choice for a career in carpentry, masonry or landscaping. We need to strip the elite aura from the claustrophobic “prestige” jobs in sterile corporate offices, where high salaries drug the worker clones from recognition of their own imprisonment and castration.

How true. This is only so in the U.S.A. today. It wasn’t so long ago that a doctor was proud that his son could own/drive a rig. Today it’s all college (overrated), and nothing else, due to shunning of anything less.

I like Ms. Paglia’s writing style and the fact that she covers so many topics, intelligently. One doesn’t have to agree with it all but she makes one think. And how cultured this lady is. She’s also curagious to let her side’s embarrassing factions have it, mercilessly. I hardly ever see them come back to attack her, though I could be uninformed on this one.

Entelechy on May 10, 2007 at 12:57 AM

Of course “she’s also courageous” :(

Pwned.

Your link explained it quite simply.

Tks.

Rosie O fat lesbian bat is a solipsist because EVERYTHING is about how she personally feels.

Bill O calls it S-P. Moral reletavism, only ones personal feelings can be verified as factual or relevant.

csdeven on May 10, 2007 at 1:09 AM

Entelechy, I’m astonished!

Today it’s all college (overrated), and nothing else, due to shunning of anything less.

Without college, most employers won’t even hire you, let alone pay a salary worth raising a family. I came from those unorthodox choices for a careers and decided to pursue a higher education and a higher salary, with less backbreaking work as landscaping.

Although landscaping is something I pride on my own property my education and the elite aura from the claustrophobic “prestige” jobs in sterile corporate offices, where high salaries drug the worker clones from recognition of their own imprisonment and castration, allowed me to be where I live today. Fruit of my labors if you will, without the pain of castration of my twigs and berries. :)

A solipsist is one who believes that only she (O’Donnell) is real, or deserving of attention.

It can be considered a philosophy, or a mental illness. As far as Stable Mabel goes, take your pick.

WasatchMan on May 10, 2007 at 4:47 AM

As one who works in “the trades” (I fix expensive toys…. motorcycles!), Not having gone to college, has not kept me from voraciously learning about the things that interest me. Nor does it mean that I cannot hold my own in spirited debate with so called intelectuals with PhD’s. I often discuss technical, financial, and political topics with my father in law ( a former VP at Baer), who is very well educated, without any need for him to talk down to my level of education.

Dear Kini, far be it for me to let you down, my e-friend. I sure hope that my explanation will not make matters worse.

What I lament is not giving up degrees for those who can and should get them. I’ve earned mine, while working full time and traveling around the world.

My beef is with everyone getting one, just to have one, even if we end up with hundreds of thousands of worthless Bachelors in Biology, for example (if you have one of those and apply it, be proud – it’s just an example).

I agree with you that parents, coaches, advisors, etc. should encourage kids to study and to aim as high as they possibly can.

However, not every9one is cut out to do so. I lament that trades are looked down on. In Europe, for example, anyone can still go to trade school to become a good baker, butcher, care-taker, dental technician, among many others, and then get paid fairly good and be able to make a good living.

Don’t take me wrong – they are just as snooty, if not more so for their titles over there.

I’d just like to have the option for those who are not able, and otherwise just float, without a job, without a purpose…anyway, w/b nice to talk this over more concretely, on your patio, with the wife, the dogs, the well-earned life you lead today, due to your efforts. My take is that all efforts s/b rewarded, not only the learned ones.

With the fondest regards,

Entelechy on May 10, 2007 at 11:59 AM

Entelechy, you would be very welcome.

I see your point. Don’t get a degree just to have one (like so many of my liberal arts friends) and never use it except as notch in the belt of life.

Pumehana me aloha,
