Video: Mitt Romney’s second campaign ad

Mitt Romney is the first top-tier Republican presidential candidate to run a national ad. The ad started in early April, but I haven’t seen it on television until recently:

Bryan adds: The ad deftly distances Romney from President Bush–who has spent money like mad and only used the veto twice–while coming across as positive and reformist and a conservative Republican. It gets Romney to Bush’s right on fiscal issues, where there is a lot of space and where any GOP hopeful needs to be. I can’t say I’m a Romney guy, but this is a solid ad imho. Not flashy or original, but it does the job.

Blowback

I’m not a strong Romney guy, either, but it’s a great ad. He’s definitely worth considering.

amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 11:58 PM

You can’t count Romney out because he’s a handsome, well-spoken man. Those two things alone get people’s attention, and that’s half the battle.

Jim-Rose on May 9, 2007 at 12:02 AM

What’s Mitt going to do when the libs and MSM accuse him of starving children with his veto pen? The guy who can punk these people like Reagan did is the guy I vote for.

Valiant on May 9, 2007 at 12:06 AM

I have seen MITTS! ad on cable a couple of times. Since the 06 election failures by the GOP was over spending and corruption, Mitt! is targeting the idnies and undecideds with this spot. I think the hand wringing is a nice touch and I am sure it resonates very well with the afore mentioned groups.

csdeven on May 9, 2007 at 12:08 AM

Great ad, except for the red hat he wore in parts of the spot. Bad camera angle, but I’m sure the nutroots will come up with some secret “Morman” hat angle.

BacaDog on May 9, 2007 at 12:08 AM

Sorry…I didn’t care for the ad. Reminded me of just another “I’ll cut spending in Washington” ad. Call me cynical, but it just never happens.

Remember Gramm/Rudman, anyone? It ended up having more holes in it than swiss cheese.

Yeah, that seems wierd to me too. All of us try to put our best foot forward and to be as competent as possible, but we mistrust those that achieve that? I know Mitt! has some flaws, but I don’t think they are dangerous just because they aren’t evident.

csdeven on May 9, 2007 at 12:12 AM

Heh heh heh. Looks a bit like a fez don’t it?

csdeven on May 9, 2007 at 12:14 AM

Good ad. Energetic. I love good competition and Mitt seems to be able to step up to the plate.

Street Sense didn’t have a prayer coming out of the first turn….yeah….that’s what I thought.

Good ad.

Buzzy on May 9, 2007 at 12:33 AM

The bit at then end was bad “I can’t wait to get my hands on Washington”. Err… “get hold of the veto pen in Washington”, maybe, but what he said is creepy and stupid. I can write the opposition ads – D or R – myself. They’ll make him look like an insane power mad Mormon (one of those people who believes he’s equal to God and doesn’t really believe in God – from an emailer to the Corner in response to the Sharpton attack against Mormons). Stupid quote, stupid clip.

Until that point, I love the clip, especially an annual 1% cut in spending. Heard that kind of thing way too many times too trust it, especially from a Northeasterner connected to the corporate elite. I mean I love the corporate elite and am working my way up that milieu, but very few solids ideologically there. Idiot hedge fund managers and VCs will hire Leftist Dems like the Shrillspawn and Pretty Pony, not to mention the millions upon millions given in hopes of being the last one eaten by the Red Guard of Maxine Watters.

I’d trust Romney more if the right people hated him. The right people HATE Rudy beyond all possible belief. Osama is his 2nd worst enemy, with the Mafia #3 after the NYT crowd. That tells you something important, while too many people like Romney. Obviously Romney hasn’t done the necessary work to reduce government spending or the extent of government in Mass, nor done anything to prosecute the murderous Mass Senator.

libertarianuberalles on May 9, 2007 at 12:39 AM

I agree, Bryan. Great place to start out — right of Bush and the GOP legislators on spending.

Jaibones on May 9, 2007 at 12:48 AM

lol…..sorry….but been retired too long and too many cocktails but ain’t we all a bunch of fussbudgets…..I punk Rudy, csdeven punks Fred!, most everybody punks McCain….
I know, I know, it is the way the game is played, at least until the nod is given then it is rah rah rah for the chosen one…….if we are this tough on ourselves then God help the Libtard who gets the nod on the other side!

it is going to be a long long hot (global warming) summer at HA I can tell.

Limerick on May 9, 2007 at 12:52 AM

he bit at then end was bad “I can’t wait to get my hands on Washington”.

I’d agree with that. That’s got some serious spin potential..

Reaps on May 9, 2007 at 12:54 AM

Hey Romney, Lookin Presidential. Making Copies!

Kini on May 9, 2007 at 2:02 AM

Romney wants the job. Romney can handle the job. All that’s left is for him to fight for and win the job.

I’d work for him.

spmat on May 9, 2007 at 3:46 AM

Is that CPAC where he’s talking? I feel like I’ve heard that speech somewhere. Anyway, though I’m surpised at how basic it is (looks more like an internet ad), it’s good and effective.

Patriot33 on May 9, 2007 at 4:08 AM

I love vetoes = I love Mitt. I especially like the enthusiastic way he said it, he isn’t kidding.

JustTruth101 on May 9, 2007 at 4:35 AM

If the add were running for Pres it would be the current front runner. I’m thinkin’ that your watching a good chunk of his first 20m going out right there.

TBinSTL on May 9, 2007 at 4:56 AM

More of this, and I’m on board.

But the kicker is the war. Mitt has to prove that he’d be a more ruthless SOB than Rudy. Can he do it?

Halley on May 9, 2007 at 5:28 AM

Was that a secret handshake he gave to himself?

right2bright on May 9, 2007 at 8:55 AM

I watched H&C last night and this is not the video they showed. Ian, I think you got the wrong one. Also, I’ve seen this video for a couple of weeks and I had not seen the one shown on H&C.

csdeven on May 9, 2007 at 9:57 AM

It’s from CPAC.

tommuck on May 9, 2007 at 11:08 AM

The bit at then end was bad “I can’t wait to get my hands on Washington”.

Agree. I’ve heard the ad a few times and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The “I like vetoes” bit was cute in a childish way.

Connie on May 9, 2007 at 3:22 PM

asc85 on May 9, 2007 at 12:10 AM

If Romney had no history backing up his claims then you might be correct. However, you have to look at his record. He saved the 2000 Olympics and he saved Massachusetts from pending bankruptcy. I think Romney’s only obstacle is the fact that as Governor he had a line item veto at his disposal which he would not have as president.

calirighty on May 9, 2007 at 3:58 PM

He looks like one of those admirals from the 1700’s with that thing around his head.
