No word yet on whether they’re freelance or part of a cell, but there’s a presser scheduled for this afternoon at 2:30.
Six people were arrested on Monday in connection with an alleged plot to murder as many soldiers as possible at Fort Dix, according to various media sites.
The men, ethnic Albanians, allegedly attempted to purchase automatic weapons from an arms dealer working with the FBI and were arrested in New Jersey after officials learned of the plans, a law enforcement source said…
Officials raided the homes of the men, described as Islamic radicals, and said there is video showing some of the alleged planning.
Standby for updates.
Update: The article originally described them as “ethnic Albanians” but now it’s been updated to say they’re from what used to be Yugoslavia. By way of background, AQ has been working for awhile on recruiting “white Muslims” from Bosnia to stage attacks in the west because they blend in better in western societies.
Update: Looks like they were most interested in military targets, which makes me suspect they weren’t part of AQ:
Investigators told Newschannel 4’s Jonathan Dienst that these arrests are the result of a tip to the FBI and use of an informant to track the suspects. The terror suspects traveled over the last several months from New Jersey to the Poconos where they practiced firing automatic weapons, investigators said.
Investigators said the group discussed targeting numerous locations like Dover Air base, Fort Monmouth and several Coast Guard stations before deciding on Fort Dix as their intended target. Fort Dix is run in part by the Army and is a reserve-training center, but active units take part in training, including some which focuses on counter-terrorism.
Update: Details galore from the Newark Star-Ledger:
The would-be attackers, ethnic Albanians who had been under surveillance by the FBI for months, practiced by shooting paintball guns and real weapons in a rural area of the Poconos, one source said. They also allegedly watched jihadist videos in which Osama bin Laden urged them toward martyrdom.
“They were prepared to die,” said the law enforcement source. “We became increasingly convinced this was for real and these guys were ready to roll.”…
The men – several of whom were in the same family – had videotaped their practice sessions in the Poconos, the source said. That videotape, in which they railed against America, led to their arrests.
The men made the mistake of bringing it to a retail store seeking to get a copy burned to a DVD, according to one of the sources. A store employee who later watched the tape called the FBI who began immediately investigating.
Needless to say, that last detail also makes me think they’re not AQ.
Update: ABC News has a teaser up about one of the suspects being a pizza delivery man who had access to the base.
Update: Three of the men were brothers. I wonder how they hooked up with the other three.
Three high-level law enforcement sources told ABC News that the investigation into the plot had been ongoing for 15 months. Four of the six suspects were born in Yugoslavia, one was born in Jordan and the other in Turkey. All were U.S. residents…
[Fort Dix] was chosen because one cell member’s family owned a pizza parlor near the base and that member was able to enter the base to deliver pizza. The group believed this access would enable its attack to succeed.
Update: No ties to any international terror groups, according to CBS News. It was homegrown.
Update: Fox News updates its report with a quote from source saying they’re all recent converts. Really? The guys from Jordan and Turkey, too?
Update: Spruiell issues a broad strata alert after catching a few cops — and CNN, of course — politely ignoring the organizing principle here.
Update: Just across on Fox News — at least three of the suspects are here illegally, which contradicts ABC News’s report that all were U.S. residents. Reuters doesn’t give a number but quotes a spokesman from the U.S. Attorney’s office as corroborating Fox’s report. Some are illegal, some are U.S. citizens.
Update: MM sends the link to the criminal complaint (in PDF form). The suspects:
Dritan Duka (illegal alien)
Eliver Duka (illegal alien)
Shain Duka (illegal alien)
Serdar Tatar
Mohamad Shnewer
Agron Abdullahu
Update: On page 7 of the complaint, it says 10 men were identified in the DVD shot at the training camp. Shnewer appears to have been the ringleader; Abdullahu may or may not have been a sniper in Kosovo. Fort Dix hosted several thousand Albanian refugees from Kosovo in 1999.
Update: On page 21, there’s a reference to attacking American warships docked in the port of Philadelphia followed by some talk of training for overseas jihad, then followed on the next page by the bright idea to wage jihad right here at home — including possibly joining the military so that they could frag people instead. They were keen on getting AK-47s too, and there’s a mention of rocket-propelled grenades towards the end.
Update: According to CBS News, Shnewer is from Jordan and is the lone U.S. citizen of the six; Tatar, from Turkey, and Abdallahu, from the former Yugoslavia, are legal permanent residents. The Duka brothers are also from Yugoslavia and, as previously mentioned, are here illegally.
Update: Here we go with this Orwellian crap already:
The description of the suspects as “Islamic militants” renewed fears in New Jersey’s Muslim community. Hundreds of Muslim men from New Jersey were rounded up and detained by authorities in the months following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but none was connected to that plot.
“If these people did something, then they deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” said Sohail Mohammed, a lawyer who represented scores of detainees after the 2001 attacks. “But when the government says ‘Islamic militants,’ it sends a message to the public that Islam and militancy are synonymous.
“Don’t equate actions with religion,” he said.

I’m not too familiar with military security, but if 6 guys stormed an Army Base wouldn’t they be gunned down within a few seconds before they could do too much damage?
It seems like a pretty poorly-conceived, half-baked plan which probably means it’s a bunch of jihadist wannabes and not al-Qaeda or any organized cell.

Still, the folks who tried to bring down WTC in ‘93 weren’t so brilliant, either — trying to get the deposit back on the van. But it almost worked.

It depends on the base. Some military bases use civilian police to man the gates. At a lot of the bases I grew up near, if you got past the gate guards, you could have gotten pretty far into the base before security could mobilize.

Only a dumbass would strap a bomb to their belly and blow themselves up in a crowded area, or try to storm a U.S. Army base. No one ever said that jihadis were the brightest lamp posts on the block. and they filmed themselves. idiots.

lowfibass on May 8, 2007 at 9:14 AM
I remember as a kid when my Dad was in the Air Force and we would go see him at Andrews AFB it was always an ordeal. I always looked forward to having my ID checked at the gate because I would get questioned and looked at by lots of big men toting big guns. I guess if you manage to get past the guards at the gate, either by stealth or force, it may be awhile before troops can be rallied to hunt you down. And would Andrews have more security than a standard base because of it’s location and the fact Air Force and other stragetic interests are based there?
Anyway, I don’t want to downplay the situation and I’m glad we caught these guys before they killed anybody, but this seems like a really stupid, half-assed plan that was doomed from the beginning. Allah would not be proud. If this is the best the terrorists have maybe we are overestimating them.

frankj on May 8, 2007 at 9:22 AM
I think because Andrews has the president’s aircraft, it’s ultra-secure.
Slublog on May 8, 2007 at 9:23 AM
These idiots? maybe. but Al-Qaeda? no. we should never underestimate people who want to annihilate western civilization. After all, they’ve already managed to bring down the towers, blow up the USS Cole, blow up a few embassies, etc. Being on the offensive is our best bet.

IIRC, refugees from Kosovo were housed in Ft. Dix in the late 90s.
IrishEi on May 8, 2007 at 9:28 AM
I work about 10 minutes from Cherry Hill. Exciting times here today. One wonders what kind of special access a pizza delivery man is granted at military bases these days. CAIR is pretty deep into the pockets of a few elected officials on both sides of the Schuylkill here, so I’ll bet they’re hard at work drafting a grievance statement as I write this.
World B. Free on May 8, 2007 at 9:34 AM
IIRC, Fort Dix is an open base, with little or no security. Right next door at MacGuire AFB is a different matter.
BohicaTwentyTwo on May 8, 2007 at 9:37 AM
What the hell difference does it make if they’re “al Qaeda?” The problem isn’t only al Qaeda, it’s GLOBAL JIHAD!
Capitalist Infidel on May 8, 2007 at 9:39 AM
BohicaTwentyTwo on May 8, 2007 at 9:37 AM:
I was at Ft. Dix a couple of weeks ago, and security is still pretty tight…has been since 9/11, with concrete barriers and several/most entrances closed altogether. Ft. Monmouth is in the process of closing down (2011 I think) and they too are still on a high level of alert as have all the bases since 9/11.
Heck, there is still a police car stationed at the local reservoir 24-7.
IrishEi on May 8, 2007 at 9:42 AM
Yeh, bases differ in their security levels. Only way to get pizza delivered to Andrews is by people with military ids working at Papa Johns.
Just because a base/post has civilian guards, that doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of heavily armed people near by.
But if cars and trucks aren’t searched, a few people could hide and get past the gate in a pizza delivery vehicle. Then they could go anywhere on base…
MamaAJ on May 8, 2007 at 9:46 AM
Exactly. Every time something like this occurs, people breathe a sigh of relief when they find out it’s not al-Qaeda. No one seems concerned that jihad has morphed into a worldwide movement and is spreading like cancer throughout the ummah.
RedWinged Blackbird on May 8, 2007 at 9:52 AM
About 20 years ago, my Dad used to take us to Andrews AFB on Sundays. I was pretty young, but I don’t remember too much fuss about getting through the gates. He wasn’t in the AF…but he would meet someone there once a week. My dad has weird connections. My brothers and I would eat in the buffet hall and hang around. To me, it was less secure then say..the Upper Marlboro jail in MD for example. Of course, that was around 1987!

See this is my biggest problem with the “Global War on Terror.” Of course there are radical jihadists both here and abroad who want to kill as many of us as they can and inflict as much damage as possible on our society. And I believe we should be doing everything we can to kill or capture all of them; you’ll receive no arguments from me on either of those points.
But when we start talking about things like the GWOT we group a bunch of nobody losers who develop these stupid, half-assed plans with almost no real chance of success with an organized, well-funded organization like al-Qaeda who we know has the resources and know-how to hit us where it hurts. Sure they’re similar in that they are radical jihadists who chant death to America, but al-Qaeda would probably be embarrassed to be associated to a plan like this.
By calling this part of the war on terror and associating them with the likes of al-Qaeda we’re almost giving them more credit than they deserve. They’re probably just a bunch of disgruntled losers who watched videos on the Internet and decided to start a jihad of their own. The whole idea of the war on terror gives them what they want, it makes them feel like they are a part of something bigger and a legitimate threat to the U.S. like al-Qaeda.

amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 10:13 AM
What am I in denial about? I don’t deny they are radical Muslims who want to kill us because of who we are and what we represent. I don’t deny they planned to attack Fort Dix. I don’t deny we should do everything we can to stop them.
JaHerer22 on May 8, 2007 at 10:14 AM
I kinda see where you’re coming from here, but shouldn’t we treat every group who wants to kill us with the same level of intensity? AQ or not, they were planning an attack on American soil.
I don’t define the war on terror as a war against AQ, but a war against all jihadists.
SouthernDem on May 8, 2007 at 10:18 AM
I’m not arguing they weren’t for real and weren’t actually going to carry out their attack…I see no reason not to believe that.
But I don’t think 6 guys rushing a military base is a legitimate threat to our national security or a terrorist attack planned by an organized, well funded cell. It sounds like amateur hour to me. And if the military couldn’t have defended the base and killed our captured these guys with minimal casualties then I think we need to reconsider base security.
JaHerer22 on May 8, 2007 at 10:19 AM
Maybe you didn’t hear it the first time:
IrishEi on May 8, 2007 at 10:20 AM
Ok. Let’s look at this particular situation.
1. The men were Islamic
2. They were followers of bin Laden
3. They wanted to kill Americans
4. They had a plan to kill Americans
5. They had the weapons
6. They were making their own recruiting videos
7. They had access to the military base to carry it out
8. They were ready to die, to kill Americans
Now, odds are they weren’t trying to kill the Americans because they had bought up all the ham sandwiches in the town.
Sounds pretty Islamic extremist to me. Sounds like they could’ve killed several people, as well. That’s assuming they weren’t going to use any explosives.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 10:20 AM
The whole problem isn’t the main branch of al-Qaeda. It’s not like if we kill all members of al Qaeda, they’ll be no more Islamic terrorists. As someone else stated, it’s not about al Qaeda. It’s not a membership-thing. It’s an ideal.
You don’t have to be well-financed, with lots of experience, to kill many people. You also don’t have to originate in Iraq or Afghanistan. You could be an American your whole life, and like the ideas of bin Laden. Convert to Islam, get the weapons, a plan, and you’re ready.
If it was just a small group of people, that’d be one thing. Problem is, there are all these cells, like this one, around the world, and across America.

fogw on May 8, 2007 at 10:27 AM
What exactly does this mean? Do you think bin Laden called up these guys and told them to plan this attack? If that’s what you’re saying, then yes I’m in denial.
If you’re just saying that there are radical Islamists all over globe who want to plan a jihad against us, then I believe you and I’m not in denial.
But if you think all of these Islamists pose the same level of threat, that these guys are just as dangerous as a legitimate al-Qaeda cell, that’s just ridiculous.
JaHerer22 on May 8, 2007 at 10:30 AM
Well, considering the amount of damage they could have done, it’s not ridiculous – maybe they would not have taken down a major landmark or brought down an airliner, but they would have succeeded in terrorism’s real goal – making us feel less safe in our own country.
The issue here is not organization – it’s fervor. An unorganized group of jihadists can further the goals of terror just as effectively, if not more, than a “legitimate al-Qaeda cell.”
Slublog on May 8, 2007 at 10:33 AM
Of course we get the “They arent THAT big of a threat” arguement now.
Jaherer we just had ONE lone gunman storm a campus at VA TECH and murder 32 people with just one small handgun. Now we hear that SEVEN men with AK 47s were planning to go on a killing spree and your best answer is “Oh well wasnt al queda lets go back to sleep” ?
William Amos on May 8, 2007 at 10:36 AM
I’m hitting my head on my desk, btw. The point is, that bin Laden doesn’t need to send them a line, for them to be dangerous, extremists. This is an ideal, that goes beyond al Qaeda.
Say these guys had planted an explosive by the front gate. It went off killing a few guards. They then take the rest of them out, with over 6 terrorists fighting, proceeding into the base. They take out several people walking around.
Say they killed about 10 people. Would it have been a failed terrorist attack? No. We still lost Americans. 10 families have lost their loved ones. Therefore, they are as dangerous. Could al Qaeda have killed more, probably.
But these Islamic extremists still killed loved ones. Whether 10 people are killed by al Qaeda, or 10 by some psycho maniac, who is an amateur, the 10 people are still dead. And the terrorists successful. Let’s also not forget that these amateurs were going to recruit.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 10:37 AM
Define legitimate al-Qaeda cell. Do they carry IDs?
fogw on May 8, 2007 at 10:38 AM
You miss the point of islamic indoctrination. Jihad doesn’t have to be a well organized effort by well trained “Jihadis”, it’s a mindset that calls on every muslim to kill infidels and spread islam. This crap is just another indication of how far this insidious disease has spread in the US and how stupid we are for not controlling access to the US for fear of being labeled politically incorrect or racist. We have every right to allow or deny entry to anyone we choose. Muslim immigration to the US should be halted, and visas denied with few exceptions. If muslims who wish nothing more than a better life become upset then they should take their frustrations out on the people that cause the problems, not the US for protecting itself.
darwin on May 8, 2007 at 10:38 AM
No, I’m not opposed to going on the offensive. I think if there is a known al-Queada training camp or other terrorist cell we should take it out either with a cruise missile or special forces raid. I think if we locate a known terrorist leader they should be taken out immediately. I thought our recent operations in Somalia were right along the lines of what we should be doing.
But the whole idea and conduct of the GWOT has created a strict dichotomy of us vs them; America vs jihadists. Before there were a bunch of scattered, unrelated terrorist cells working to attack us. Now, we’ve effectively worked to put them under the same umbrella and practically encouraged them join forces and for a united front against us.

I’m no expert on the jihadi mind, but it sounds like they wanted to be “martyrs”. Storming an army base might be their way of making sure that happens before they run out of ammo and risk getting captured. Plus, I’m sure “killed while storming a US Army base” looks good on a jihadi resume.

Barracks are not the gold repository at Ft. Knox. It would be just like Blacksburg……soldiers sleeping, reading, watching TV, kicked back, waiting for pizza. The nearest weapon is in the battalion weapons room, locked up tight.
The duty officer (one) is making his rounds with one hand gun and 5 rounds of ammo. He has to cover 9, 10, 12, buildings. The ‘pizza-man’ walks in with the ‘pizza’. Sure these soldiers would fight back, unlike VTech, but it would be a massacre all the same.
Limerick on May 8, 2007 at 10:51 AM
No … Soldiers don’t routinely walk around armed. The military police would be armed, no one else would be. If they managed to enter the base under supposedly legitimate reasons and had a chance to drive to heavily populated areas, they could have killed hundreds depending on their weapons and how long it took for armed response to reach them.

This is why we should have never favored the creation of another Muslim majority country in Europe.
This is why we need to start seriously enforcing immigration laws.
This is why NO Iraqi refugees should be admitted to the United States (or any other western country). The entire refugee system needs to be overhauled.
Unfortunately, I don’t put a lot of faith in Bush to get it. Not until there is a catastrophic terrorist attack successfully carried out might Bush take these sort of things seriously.

Can we drag those “Loose Lips Sink Ships” posters out again?

Great comments from our nation’s enemies at PuffHost:
George Bush is creating more hate in the World every day that he remains in office.
Sorry. This administration has conditioned me to deem this to be wholly manufactured bullshit.
Sounds like pure Bull$hit Pentagon propaganda to me.
Seems odd that this “plot” is exposed a day after the announcement of Bush’s lowest approval ratings per the Newsweek poll.

Please, folks! Stop calling them illegal aliens. We need to be sensitive to their feelings. In the future, please refer to them as undocumented alleged terrorists.
tommy1 on May 8, 2007 at 11:02 AM
Terrorism is apparently one of those jobs.
tommy1 on May 8, 2007 at 11:04 AM
I’m sure AQ would be willing to take credit for their plan, if they weren’t caught before it came to fruition, and if of course they didn’t make a complete hash of the actual attack.
But, since they were caught first, this instance of sudden jihad syndrome has nothing to do with AQ

Hey its only fair. They question the timing and I question their sanity.

Typical liberal – blame America first.
God what a moron.
thirteen28 on May 8, 2007 at 11:08 AM
What’s the point of this comparison? It’s completely absurd. The 9-11 hijackers used boxcutters b/c you can’t sneak AK-47s on an airplane and the NJ 6 used AK-47s because you can’t assault a military base with box cutters. This seems like common sense. I’m confused as to your point.
Regardless, I agree with everyone who says this could have been a disaster and people could have been killed and I’m glad they were caught. But I stick by my point that treating every terrorist or terrorist threat the same is counter-productive. That’s not to say we should kill or capture every terrorist, just that they are different threat levels.
The 9/11 hijackers were well-funded and well trained by al-Qaeda and their plan was well coordinated. Thus they managed to kill thousands of Americans. Though we don’t know everything about these guys, it appears they were naive, independent, and their plan was half-assed. Thus they got caught before they could kill anyone. Grouping them in with al-Qaeda in the GWOT puts a bunch of nobody jihadist failures in the same company with OBL and the rest of the jihadist heroes who perpetrated 9/11. Yes, they are all evil and they all deserve to die, but that doesn’t mean they all pose the same threat.
Every war we have ever fought against an idea has been an utter failure.
We declared war on poverty and there are still tons of poor people and the gap between rich and poor is widening.
We declared war on drugs and drugs are just as prevelent, stronger, and as available as ever.
We declared war on terror and well the jury’s still out but it hasn’t exactly gone swimmingly.
Maybe we should just stick to declaring war on other countries, that’s what we seem to do pretty well in those. (Iraq not withstanding.)
JaHerer22 on May 8, 2007 at 11:13 AM
JaHerer22,
It has been requested that I be nicer, that said I will not say just how much reading crap spewed out of vacuous empty headed twits like you makes me want to puke. Minimalists attempting at all times to down play the threat facing the entire western world should in my personal opinion be treated with the exact same extreme prejudice as those individuals willing to engage in violent jihad. And yes son that means you.
Rock on……………..

Oy. Gotta love the conspiracy theorists at HuffPo. Do they realize that the guy was turned in by a video store employee, and investigated and arrested by the FBI? I can’t wait for them to claim that the employee was paid off by Karl Rove.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 11:16 AM
Maybe we should stop our war on crime and just do away with the police!
eforhan on May 8, 2007 at 11:16 AM
For those who think that it was amateur hour, so was Oklahoma City. You may not think that this is that big a deal, but thank goodness the FBI did.
For those who blame Bush, how many terrorist attcks happened under Clinton? This just in: The Jihadis started their current campaign against the West in 1979 when they took over Iran. Before that, they were less well organized and financed, but the seeds still existed.
tommy1, how dare you damage their fragile egos by refering to them as terrorists. They’re freedom fighters or patriots.

More great comments from PuffHost Mensa designers and makeup artists (No, I am not making this up):
When it’s all over, you’ll discover that it was some undercover government spy who cooked up the plot, convinced some dopes to go along, and then had them arrested.
We fought them over there and they still plotted ‘terraism’ over here.
THis story sounds manufactured to push all the jingoist buttons:”Islamic terrorists planning to attack the troops that defend our freedom”….oh brother.
The bad guys are the people that attack a country that never was a threat and kill, abuse and maim their population
What better than catching a few islamic terrorists lodged in theis country to give our corrupt administration a boast.
They have no real interest in stopping terrorism. Terrorism is good for political business, and for corporate profits. Bush and Osama are in a symbiotic relationship.
(These people make me want to consider believing in the gender-crossing part of evolution – maybe some of us did come from monkeys)
faraway on May 8, 2007 at 11:21 AM
Actually you’re wrong, I blame America fourth.
In order, my blame game goes like this:
1st–The individual, every one is in control of their own actions.
2nd–Radical Islam, for its false promises and encouragement.
3rd–Backwards, corrupt countries for giving their citizens almost no little chance to succeed.
4th–America, well you know, for all those treasonous reasons liberals hate America.
JaHerer22 on May 8, 2007 at 11:21 AM
Every war we have ever fought against an idea has been an utter failure. Ever heard of the defeat of Hitler and the Nazis? It was in all the papers.
We declared war on poverty and there are still tons of poor people and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Libs threw money at poverty thinking that was a cure, instead it made more of the downtrodden rely on the government rather than themselves.
We declared war on drugs and drugs are just as prevelent, stronger, and as available as ever. Libs handed out syringes, that doesn’t encourage druggies to stop.
We declared war on terror and well the jury’s still out but it hasn’t exactly gone swimmingly. Good, I’ll give you credit, you’re still giving it the chance it deserves.

Let’s not jump to any conclusions folks. Remember, Islam is a religion of peace. I’m willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and say that they were just plotting to do Allah, the most murderous’, will. You people just want to stomp on their religious rights!
Let me repeat what the all knowing Michael Moore has been telling us for years: There is no terrorist threat!

He’s not bombing abortion clinics which is the really important thing!

OK, I have been waiting for this PuffHost post and I was not disappointed (the best for last):
At least they were going after military targets, which was smart of them, and yes, courageous of them. … I’m sorry, but when you use your military against others don’t expect me to shed any tears for you.
(And there you have it)
faraway on May 8, 2007 at 11:31 AM
JaHere, what a surprise you blame America at all, of course it’s our fault-silly me. Seriously, you liberals never cease to amaze me. BTW just got back from Fort Gordon and I can tell you Ja that it would be pretty easy for someone to get on that post, go to a classroom and shoot up a lot of Soldiers. Hell, they weren’t even checking cars going through the gate without stickers or military id’s and this was just about 90 minutes ago. Soldiers don’t walk around Post armed and ready to shoot at such a short notice.
I’m sure like your pal, Rosie you lament the fact that they’re being penalized because you know, they’re parents too.
Catie96706 on May 8, 2007 at 11:32 AM
It depends on the post. Some are closed post, i.e. you have to have a Post sticker/pass to get on. Some are open, such as Fort Bragg and Fort Hood. The only soldiers armed 24/7 on post are the MPs and any fixed post security, such as Ammo Supply Points and secure facitilties. All arms are kept in arms rooms under lock and key. So if a group was to attack they could do quite a bit of damage before being stopped.
SPIFF1669 on May 8, 2007 at 11:33 AM
Faraway, as best I can tell the liberals almost seem pleased about the news of a terrorist cell inside the US.
I don’t think they want an attack to happen in our country (well, unless it’s in the White House), but it strokes their BDS egos. It lets them say things like, “We fought them over there and they still plotted ‘terraism’ over here” in spite of everyone who is not a liberal knowing attacks were always possible.
It’s really strange to me. On Wizbang, the liberals are acting like those HuffPo ones and even joking(?) we should attack Greece.
Color me crazy, but I’d think everyone should be ~happy~ these monsters were caught.
