Audio: Fred! launches ABC radio podcast

Ohhhh, that meat’s red. Crazy red. It’s got Thomas Jefferson and pirates and the Marine Corps hymn and the caliphate and forgiveness for one’s enemies, but not Al Qaeda, which needs to be smashed on a rock (paraphrasing). Tender, juicy, chicken-fried steaky red meat.
Exit question: Is there an Internet exception to the “equal time” rule? I can’t find a definitive answer online, but I’m assuming there must be. Otherwise why would ABC give him a platform when he’s widely expected to be weeks away from declaring?

Another example of conservative media bias!

Quite red.
baldilocks on May 8, 2007 at 3:45 PM
Very good and a nice history lesson to the vast majority of Americans. Should be mandatory listening for everyone!
Paraphrasing…14 Year War against the Barbary Pirates who practiced Islam and believed they had a right to kill and steal from the infidel!
Oxybeles on May 8, 2007 at 3:47 PM
ABC probably thinks the same thing about Fred that they thought about Reagan: “He’s just an actor, if he’s not reading lines he’ll trip up and then we can pounce on him.”
‘Just an actor’, but they think Sean Penn’s a genius!
Tony737 on May 8, 2007 at 3:48 PM
Big Fred!bot here…..Fred! that was…well, smarmy. I appreciate the history, and understand the message, but I would rather have you get Dinnerjacket on the phone and ask him if he prefers pine or oak.
Limerick on May 8, 2007 at 3:51 PM
Wow. So he can post a blog, write columns, give radio addresses, and start podcasts.
Yet, the man seems unable to declare a candidacy.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 3:56 PM
The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, The First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805 by Richard Zacks is an excellent book.
Valiant on May 8, 2007 at 4:06 PM
freds? looking more like a rock star as the days progress. The thing is, EVERYTHING he does is pre-written or he interviews with friendly media types.
csdeven on May 8, 2007 at 4:08 PM
As you watch the Dems tear at each other in a very long, and bitter campaign… and trust me, its gonna get worse…
Is Fred! staying out because he’s squeamish? or because he’s being smart?
Romeo13 on May 8, 2007 at 4:08 PM
First Reagans speech and now Zacks book?! fred?, say it ain’t so!!
csdeven on May 8, 2007 at 4:12 PM
Wagyu.
As for why he’s waiting, he’s an actor, Fred! is just waiting for the perfect time for a badass entrance, don’t you people know anything?
Bad Candy on May 8, 2007 at 4:13 PM
Maybe ABC is hoping that the prestige of having a radio podcast will keep Fred from declaring his candidacy…
jeffshultz on May 8, 2007 at 4:15 PM
That was a great start to what is sure to become the Fred Thompson version of Roosevelt’s fireside chats. Amerpundit, it’s not that Fred is unable, his strategy is well chosen. With new episodes of L&O still to come his announcing now would mean equal time for Shillary and Usomaba. Nobody with once single ounce of intelligence willing hands their opponents a club to bash them over the head with.
Rock on……………..
doriangrey on May 8, 2007 at 4:16 PM
Here, from my nutshell, is what we are offered by all the candidates, including Fred! at this point……
1. We need to fight terrorists.
2. We need to control the borders.
3. We need lower taxes.
4. We need to fight Islamofacism.
5. We need to protect the unborn child.
here is what the nation needs:
1. We are going to crush the enemy.
2. We are going to control the borders.
3. We are going to lower taxes.
4. We are going to fight Islam.
5. We are going to protect the unborn child.
The latter statments imply will. The former just wishes. We need a leader not a uniter. Time to head down the road and not sit and the intersection with a roadmap and a car full of backseat drivers.
Limerick on May 8, 2007 at 4:19 PM
You can defend your @ss all you want, but that won’t make up for a quarter of fundraising. Whether we like it or not, you still need commercials, advertising, etc. to win. Look at ‘06. The Dems spent more money than ever on campaign commercials and ads. They won.
People aren’t going to just rush out and make up for the $20 million dollars he’s already missed.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 4:19 PM
BTW, I’m not talking about you defending your own @ss, Romeo. I’m talking about Fred defending his.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 4:19 PM
Next up – Fred! places another burr under the saddle of the nation’s ‘intelligentsia” and one of their dearest, favorite open secrets when he points out that Dems have been cynically recruiting uneducated immigrant voters for a long time. Racist torture (the real kind) and murders, plus the delight of burning churches in that most cosmopolitan of American cities are featured.
The New York Draft Riots.
Stephen M on May 8, 2007 at 4:21 PM
Can you direct me to where he declined interviews with what you would consider ‘unfriendly’ media types?
News2Use on May 8, 2007 at 4:21 PM
Fred! needs to declare. There is a lot of fundraising to do here. He needs to decide if he’s going to be a folk hero or a presidential candidate.
The time to declare has come, Mr. Thompson, and my hand stands at the ready position over my checkbook. Run already.
Matticus Finch on May 8, 2007 at 4:32 PM
To nitpick: It’s the Marines’ Hymn, not the Marine Corps’ Hymn.
JohnW on May 8, 2007 at 4:37 PM
TASTY!
Lawrence on May 8, 2007 at 4:42 PM
Yet, the man seems unable to declare a candidacy.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, Fred has TV show issues. Some of the others might demand equal time.
baldilocks on May 8, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Cmon Fred is one smart player he’s playing like a canidate without all negatives of being a canidate cudos Fred your are a master.
But its still 9 months until the first primaries and 11 months til the genral ‘lection lot canhappen to a canidates personal life and/or the nation folks sodont jump on anybandwagon just yet. Sit back and watch/listen and digest eating too fast willgive you heartburn
Kevin43 on May 8, 2007 at 4:51 PM
amerpundit,
At this point he doesnt need to. As I pointed out before nobody with once single ounce of intelligence willing hands their opponents a club to bash them over the head with.
doriangrey on May 8, 2007 at 5:00 PM
From where I’m sitting, it looks like he’s got plenty of advertising. And someone else is paying for it. Problem?
Tanya on May 8, 2007 at 5:08 PM
Yes. Once he declares, and the race heats up, Hillary and crew will start to attack him. Him simply releasing a press release, and letting the blogosphere know, won’t solve the allegations.
amerpundit on May 8, 2007 at 5:15 PM
I don’t need to. The fact that he has not is all the proof anyone needs.
csdeven on May 8, 2007 at 5:30 PM
Oh Fred. Next you’ll be doing Levitra and Cialis spots ala Bob Dole.
Bradky on May 8, 2007 at 5:34 PM
Don’t be so sure- he’s got some Republican heavy hitters on his side and a lot of Internet support. I suspect he’ll be able to raise money quickly once he announces and starts campaigning.
Hollowpoint on May 8, 2007 at 5:34 PM
But wait, he wants to kill fetuses. He is an abortionist!!!! I’d rather vote for Satan. That is the only issue I care about.
tommylotto on May 8, 2007 at 5:50 PM
I don’t think he’s going to have trouble raising money, if he decides to run. People are getting more and more disenchanted with their original picks — partially because everything started so freakishly early — and are just looking for someone new to support.
In the meantime, why not get some free publicity? It’s obviously working in a perfectly pavlovian way — everyone here’s already salivating.
Tanya on May 8, 2007 at 5:54 PM
Is it just me, or is he running the most advanced, brilliant, nuanced, sophisticated, campaign ever waged?
Must be me.
CrimsonFisted on May 8, 2007 at 5:59 PM
There is no such thing as the “equal time rule.” It’s more commonly known as the “Fairness Doctrine” that Reagan got rid of in the 80’s
Capitalist Infidel on May 8, 2007 at 6:12 PM
Not bad. Not bad at all.
This is probably the best non-campaign out there. I hope he keeps up these talks on his campaign site when HE STOPS TEASING US AND STARTS RUNNING!
Ahem.
We need a plainspoken candidate that can put the War in proper context. Because sure as hell W&Co. ain’t getting the job done.
Iblis on May 8, 2007 at 6:16 PM
Our salivation is based on careful thought and considered contemplation!
Allahpundit on May 8, 2007 at 6:18 PM
No, it’s not just you. How many candidates is anyone hearing from on a regular basis? How many are having speeches televised and and analyzed? How many are podcasting? How many do you really hear about day in and day out? How many are being speculated about daily?
From where I sit, this is a brilliant use of the media.
Run, Fred!, when the time is right!
Tennman on May 8, 2007 at 6:24 PM
Wow. I just picked up two copper tokens dated 1837 (the size of an old large cent) with the saying on the back “Millions for defence, not one cent for tribute”. This is a line attributed to Jefferson (among others, history gets fuzzy) during the period that is described by Fred! in this podcast. I’m going to make one into a watch fob for my old (1927) pocket watch. The other I’d intended to give to my 12 year old half sister so she could look it up and get a little history lesson. I got these tokens on e-bay, both for less than $20 including insured shipping.
Interesting timing that Fred! would come out with this podcast just now. At least from my point of view.
P. James Moriarty on May 8, 2007 at 6:25 PM
There’s another “Millions for defence” token for sale here if you want to see what they look like.
P. James Moriarty on May 8, 2007 at 6:30 PM
Hmm, Fred seems to be a practicer of the Art of Worldly Wisdom…
‘Do not Compete’. (Which is to say, if you don’t have to compete, don’t.) If people think its unfair that you don’t enter the fight until it is most favorable for your outcome, as long as you follow the rules they are just ninnies.
RiverCocytus on May 8, 2007 at 6:32 PM
There is no such thing as the “equal time rule.”
Thought that was the “Fairness Doctrine.”
baldilocks on May 8, 2007 at 6:39 PM
Except for amerpundit, who’s over-contemplating, and csdeven, who’s hyperventilating.
Entelechy on May 8, 2007 at 6:55 PM
You’re right baldilocks – here’s the Fairness Doctrine, which also applied to Mr. Reagan’s movies.
Entelechy on May 8, 2007 at 6:58 PM
To bad we don’t act like that now.
Fred is going to be the next president.
duff65 on May 8, 2007 at 6:58 PM
Dang, upon reading the Fairness Doctrine, linked above, it looks like it was vetoed by Messrs Reagan and Bush. Anyone have a later version of its status?
Entelechy on May 8, 2007 at 7:01 PM
I believe AllahPundit is refering to some part of the Mccain-Feingold bill.
Resolute on May 8, 2007 at 7:49 PM
I think we’re all crazy for starting the political season so soon (if it ever ended from the last two).
eforhan on May 8, 2007 at 9:01 PM
….and most of the 20m they raised is already spent. With everything he’s getting for free or getting paid to do, I’d say he’s ahead on the finances.
As to the equal time provision, it is my understanding that those rules only apply to “broadcast” media since that is the only thing that really falls under regulatory control. This came up with Arnie’s run in CA and they kept showing his movies on cable right up to the election. Precedent is set.
TBinSTL on May 8, 2007 at 9:03 PM
Tenant went from the CIA to the CYA.
Even though Fred is not the whole conservative loaf, he’ll do just fine for the leader of the free world. On the plus side, he can play himself in the post administration movies about his administration.
With his great narration voice Fred could reinstate the fireside chat.
Mojave Mark on May 8, 2007 at 9:12 PM
Hyperventilating about what? I’m not the one who is renting my hair, screaming FRED! and crying over a non-candidate.
The guy is nothing, nil, nada, zero, and zilch, when it comes to being a viable candidate. He is a candidate to be a candidate and that’s all.
csdeven on May 8, 2007 at 9:34 PM
Nervous, are ya? Take something for it. :)
Connie on May 8, 2007 at 9:47 PM
csdeven, buddy, you just did it again, proving the point that you’re too attached to Mr. Romney, a 100% prerogative of yours. Just having a little fun with you, in good spirits :) In the end, I’ll pull the trigger for whoever will be running against Clinton/Obama/Edwards.
On a more clarifying note, I believe it’s the Equal Time Rule they are concerned about.
I believe Mr. T will be off the hook after May 29 for one contract and sometimes in June from L & O.
csdeven, what will you write about when he announces? Give us a preview, in good faith. Remember, we’re on the same side.
Entelechy on May 8, 2007 at 9:54 PM
Entelechy,
Actually I am only pro Mitt! because he has the least baggage. I am pro Rudy because he polls well against all dems.
IF fred? announces I will consider him as a viable candidate along with the current crop. I don’t see the problem with the equal time issue if he announces that he will announce sometime in the near future. As he would not be legally a candidate, the equal time law has no weight of law. That’s how I read it, but I’m not a lawyer.
csdeven on May 9, 2007 at 12:01 AM
Heartache… someone needs to tell Fred! that George’s last name ain’t “Tenent”.
RD on May 9, 2007 at 12:08 AM
No Crimson, you hit it dead on target. Pity the shortsighted, jealous, and impatient can’t see that.
With Fred!, we’re watching history in the making. His will be a run for President that will be duplicated and used as a blueprint from now on out.
Watch and see.
techno_barbarian on May 9, 2007 at 2:20 PM
csdven
No, you’re the one crying over the fact that he hasn’t declared yet. Yet again. It’s tedious.
We get it, already. You don’t like or support Fred! Great. Your point is well documented. What’s your chant going to be when he does finally announce?
And, ameripundit, I can’t wait to throw my money at Fred! once he does announce. Money for him will not be a problem.
techno_barbarian on May 9, 2007 at 2:28 PM
Does anyone here seriously think that Senator Thompson hasn’t engaged a number of advisors on how best to step into the arena? Anyone? Beuller?
He said in an early interview that if he runs it will be an unorthodox campaign. That he will engage non-traditional media, and traditional media in new ways. This tells me that he clearly understands how exposure translates into awareness of who he is and what he thinks. That’s what campaign dollars do above all else, and if he can get the same thing (or more) done without spending his supporter’s hard earned dollars, those dollars will be better spent elsewhere. Sounds like a plan to me.
If he should choose not to run, I’ll go back to telling you all that Tancredo and Hunter are the only real conservatives available on the list. Until the primary is over, it’s defeatist to speak of voting for “whoever the R’s put up”, and I refuse to do so.
I personally don’t think the equal time thing is part of his concern. He said plainly that he can’t talk about announcing while he has contractual obligations to NBC. What part of that is supposed to be a lie?
Freelancer on May 9, 2007 at 3:50 PM
Yes, but I dreamed about Fred. :)
