If I were married to a German, and she objected to, as was in this context, a reference to “krauts” from WWII, I would throw a history book at her.
If I were married to a Mexican, I’d not be bothered by the term “wetback” at all, because I wouldn’t marry an illegal alien. Bad example; I don’t like people from the nation of Mexico as much as I like people from the nation of Japan. The threat from Japan is over; they won, we lost. But the war with Mexico is ongoing.

Amusingly, I think on HA, I referred to Germans as “wetbacks”… as in those who crossed the Rhine to work in Rome (planting and harvesting crops, raising rich-people’s kids, working as maids and servants, etc).

God, do I have to educate the entire universe on the difference between “culture” and “race”? Between “nationality” and “race”?

Part of the issue, for me, I think is that I’ve always associated that 3-letter word as being on a par with “kraut”, “limey”, “frog” and “yankee”. Derogatory nicknames for nationalities, sometimes even applied affectionately.

Note, right2bright, I was not the one to use the term, nor have I used it since, out of consideration for Bryan; I’m arguing the principle, not the practice. A blanket ban on all derogatory speech would be understandable for civil discourse; cherry picking what derogatory terms can be used is thought-control. And after seeing them debate the terrifying hate crimes bill in Congress, I’m leaning toward defending offensive speech and behavior.

There is no stopping the freedom of speech, just the freedom of using an offensive word. Bryan never asked you to stop preaching your beliefs, he asked you to stop using a word…a word that is offensive to many people. If you managed this site, and your wife was German you would be hard pressed to allow the word krout (sp?) be thrown around. Your family would be offended. If you were married to a Mexican you would not allow the word “wetback” be given any space. So it is with many other words. Just use another word, your point will be just as valid and your “freedom of speech” will still be intact.

The “freedom of speech” line is used by the liberals when ever one tries to shut down their garbage (remember Edwards kooky bloggers?), it is a tired and trite line.

Hamas ‘Mickey Mouse’ wants Islam takeover By DIAA HADID, Associated Press Writer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Hamas militants have enlisted the iconic Mickey Mouse to broadcast their message of Islamic dominion and armed resistance to their most impressionable audience — little kids.

A giant black-and-white rodent — named “Farfour,” or “butterfly,” but unmistakably a Mickey ripoff — does his high-pitched preaching against the U.S. and Israel on a children’s show run each Friday on Al-Aqsa TV, a station run by Hamas. The militant group, sworn to Israel’s destruction, shares power in the Palestinian government.

“You and I are laying the foundation for a world led by Islamists,” Farfour squeaked on a recent episode of the show, which is titled, “Tomorrow’s Pioneers.”

“We will return the Islamic community to its former greatness, and liberate Jerusalem, God willing, liberate Iraq, God willing, and liberate all the countries of the Muslims invaded by the murderers.”

Children call in to the show, many singing Hamas anthems about fighting Israel.

Israel has long complained that the Palestinian airwaves are filled with incitement.

An Israeli organization that monitors Palestinian media, Palestinian Media Watch, said the Mickey Mouse lookalike takes “every opportunity to indoctrinate young viewers with teachings of Islamic supremacy, hatred of Israel and the U.S., and support of ‘resistance,’ the Palestinian euphemism for terror.”

The television station would not comment.

A spokeswoman from Walt Disney Co.’s headquarters in Burbank, Calif., did not immediately return messages asking for comment about the use of a Disney-like character.

Yehia Moussa, a Hamas leader in the movement’s Gaza Strip base, denied inciting children against Jews. “Our problem is not with the Jews. Our problem is with the (Israeli) occupation and the occupiers,” Moussa said.

Israeli officials denounced the program. David Baker, an official in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office, said, “There is nothing comic about inciting young generations of Palestinians to hate Israelis.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev called the program “outrageous” and charged that the Palestinians have not carried out their commitments to stop incitement of hatred toward Israel. “Children are taught that killing Jews is a good thing,” he said. “Children are taught to hate Jews and to hate nonbelievers.”

In strife-ridden Gaza, however, dreams of Islamic dominion and animosity toward the U.S. and Israel are widespread.

A Gaza-based psychologist said the program proved that the culture of glorifying violence had penetrated Palestinian society.

“It’s the fault of both (Israel and the Palestinians),” said Samir Zakkout, from the Gaza Community Mental Health Program. “If Palestinians had peace, children wouldn’t learn violence.”

Children have been traumatized by bloodshed in the course of Israeli attacks and Palestinian infighting, he said.

“There’s been a collapse of values,” he said. “If I can kill my enemy, I can kill my brother.”

Basem Abu Sumaya, head of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corp., said such programming was inappropriate.

“I don’t think it’s professional or even humane to use children in such harsh political programs,” Abu Sumaya said. “Children’s nationalist spirit must be developed differently.”

The Palestinian Broadcasting Corp. is controlled by Hamas’ political rival, the Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas..

Hamas loyalists launched the Al Aqsa satellite channel last year. Bearded young men read the news, often offering live news broadcasts. Islamic music is layered over footage of masked militants firing rockets into Israel. But the channel also broadcasts talk shows, programs about the disabled and cartoons.

Hamas loyalists also run at least five news Web sites, one newspaper — launched just last week — and a radio station.

I am not of the WW2 generation and do not use the word “Japs” as a derogatory term, only as a form of shorthand. To my generation, the Japanese are our allies, and only our enemies in WW2 movies.

Yes we have the freedom of speech but with that freedom comes responsibility. I should’ve just taken the time to type the extra 4 letters. My laziness could be used by the left to make the case that Michelle’s readers are a bunch of racists. As I said on another topic, perception trumps reality.

I had a 2nd cousin who was at Pearl Harbor, another couple of uncles who fought in the Pacific. Like Ann Coulter, I suffer from Irish Alzheimer’s… I forget everything except my grudges.

I’ve watched my country embrace Japanese culture for all of my life, and I’ve seen it decline. I’ve seen the Japanese adopt (not embrace) some of American culture, and they’ve prospered (granted, partly through economic warfare and our largess). Personally, I do not like anything I have learned about Japanese culture; it is barbaric, egotistic and cowardly… in my opinion. That is neither here nor there. But it is as important that I be able to hold my belief about Japan as it is for a preacher to be able to condemn homosexuality. And as my opinion is of Japanese culture, I don’t support derogatory terms for individual members of the Japanese race. As a nation, IMO, they suck. As a culture, IMO, they suck.

It is not a privilege. I can post at any number of other blogsites, I can create my own; I contribute to the …interesting nature… of this blogsite when I post here. I certainly pull it to the right, which is something an allegedly conservative blog should be.
My unique point of view and way of looking at things, in my opinion, pays for my right to express myself however I wish. I choose to be civil in my discourse, but object to being censored when the context of the conversation doesn’t warrent it. An example, a discussion of social diseases should allow for the usage of vulgar nicknames for certain body parts for the sake of brevity and clarity.

That’s the problem; it wasn’t racial slang, any more than referring to the French as ‘frogs’ is racial slang. Heck, redneck is more racial than is a nickname for the citizenry of Japan during WWII.
I honor Senator Inuye and others who fought for the U.S. during WWII… but the Senator is NOT Japanese any more than I am British. He is an American of Japanese ancestry, just as I am an American of Welsh ancestry. I think it’s a subtle racism to suggest that, because his racial features are not the same as Europeans, he is more closely associated with nations of his racial makeup than are Europeans with nations of their racial makeup. For example, I don’t see any German Americans object to the “nazis” reference above. Just because German Americans don’t look distinguishably different than German nationals doesn’t mean that they are of the “German” race and insulted by derogatory references to a Germany of the past.

I’m sure that some of the reason for their diligence about racial slang is that this site is often monitored by those who love the chance to ridicule Michelle and her team for being unfairly biased.

And as I read it, Tony understood the admonition from Bryan, and explained that his choice of words wasn’t meant to insult.

What is your problem with hating our enemies?
When he referred to the “the j-word” and “Nazis”, it was clearly in a context of WWII, not modern Japan, and was no reference to *race*.

What about when our British members referred to us as “yanks”? Yankee was a derogatory term, once upon a time, and still not a popular term in the South. But guess what? It’s history. It’s a slippery slope when you start cherry picking what terms your membership can use; look at the abuse we regularly dish out on the French.

For the record, I hate the Japanese, I hate Japanese culture, I despise the fact that they continued fighting the war until the 1970s when they finally won (the tactic). With an effort I refrain from expressing that hatred openly, out of respect for fools people with other sensibilities. You’ll note that I didn’t take this opportunity to childishly use the term you (for whatever reason) find offensive.

How is your condemnation of his usage of a nickname for Japanese of the WWII era any different than any other liberal, PC attempt to control what language we use? Mustn’t use the ‘n-word’, they’re “gay” not the “q-word”, but we can say redneck, redneck, redneck.

I fully expect you to stomp on the next member who uses the term “redneck”. I find it at least as offensive as you find that reference to the Japanese. Again, I’m not being facetious; I DO find the term ‘redneck’ offensive, so why shouldn’t my “feelings” be as sacred as anybody else’s? Because you don’t think I should be offended by the term? Pot. Kettle. Black.

What next, will we be chastised for referring to Iraqis as ‘desert trash’? Or will that be okay only until the war is over, when we’ve rebuilt their country, they’re building our cars and electronics, and everyone thinks sharia and suicide bombers are “cool”?

(side note; a co-worker of mine, a guy who’s genetic makeup changes with his mood and who admits to having “a problem with white people” was a devotee of Japanese culture; he spent 3 years there, and is trying to get a graduate degree here so he can return higher up on the totem pole. While doing his paperwork on day, he openly stated “God I hate this country” (in spite of being a Taoist). I didn’t kill him, I didn’t fight for his dismissal (the company owner is ex-secret service, so you can figure out how he would have reacted). But if I can put up with that, surely you can thicken your skin enough to recognize an archaic term for what it is.)
