Hot Air in the Washington Times

posted at 8:05 pm on May 7, 2007 by Bryan

Michelle (and I) sat down with several reporters and editors at the Washington Times for an interview last week. The transcript just went online here. It was a wide-ranging interview that touched on civility in the blogosphere, the flying imams, Don Imus, The View, this site and video blogging, Girls Gone Wild and whether liberal blogs deserve credit or blame for the Democrats’ win in 2006.

My favorite line:

I’m very fortunate to have the team I work with and Bryan, in particular…

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:07 PM

Well I happened to be sitting next to her and, perhaps more importantly, I was her ride home.

Bryan on May 7, 2007 at 8:09 PM

At least you got mentioned

William Amos on May 7, 2007 at 8:14 PM

At least you got mentioned

Yeah. I’m actually kind of surprised!

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Heh. Do I sense a little competition for the boss’s attention? You need to get out more, AP.

BacaDog on May 7, 2007 at 8:16 PM

Do I sense a little competition for the boss’s attention?

Heh. No, I only compete in things where I stand a chance of winning.

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:17 PM

Heh. No, I only compete in things where I stand a chance of winning.
Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:17 PM

That settles it…you have to do a vent.

Behind a screen. With a voice changer.

Slublog on May 7, 2007 at 8:19 PM

Proximity is a great ally. But anyway, the story’s about what Michelle said and she said some pretty interesting things.

Bryan on May 7, 2007 at 8:20 PM

the story’s about what Michelle said and she said some pretty interesting things.

Yep.

But, it’s hard to resist egging you and AP on though Bryan. We seldom get the chance.

BacaDog on May 7, 2007 at 8:23 PM

Yeah. I’m actually kind of surprised!

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Well you know what they say. “Some create greatness. Some have greatness thrust upon them. Then there are those that whine when greatness has a near miss.”

William Amos on May 7, 2007 at 8:27 PM

That settles it…you have to do a vent.

Slublog on May 7, 2007 at 8:19 PM

Oh man – please make it so.

Or you could wear a ‘mask’. Not sure where you could
find a photo to make one from though.

I’d suggest a vader voice changer.

middleroad on May 7, 2007 at 8:33 PM

We appreciate the Whole staff. Obviously all of you work well together and it shows.

GoodBoy on May 7, 2007 at 8:33 PM

Heh. No, I only compete in things where I stand a chance of winning.

Just look at last week’s traffic stats while you were gone.

It was good, but not addictive.

You are the crack cocaine of the site.

Valiant on May 7, 2007 at 8:42 PM

Traffic last week was actually up from the same week the month before. Let’s give Bryan, Ian, and See-Dub their due.

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:45 PM

Heh. No, I only compete in things where I stand a chance of winning.

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:17 PM

LOL

Spirit of 1776 on May 7, 2007 at 8:46 PM

Again, it was good, but not addictive.

With all respect to Michelle, Bryan, Ian, and See-Dub.

Valiant on May 7, 2007 at 8:47 PM

For the record, the full quote is this:

I’m very fortunate to have the team I work with–and Bryan, in particular, and I have been everywhere from the Gathering of Eagles march to interviewing Doolittle’s Raid survivors to going to Iraq to filming cheerleader routines in your backyard.

I was just mentioning specific instances of interesting video stuff on Hot Air. I wasn’t dissing the rest of the team.

Michelle on May 7, 2007 at 9:08 PM

More importantly, thanks to Stacy McCain for inviting us to chat, for featuring the interview, and for giving everyone at Hot Air some nice exposure.

It’s greatly appreciated.

Michelle on May 7, 2007 at 9:11 PM

It’s greatly appreciated.

Michelle on May 7, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Amen, and thanks to all of you….

middleroad on May 7, 2007 at 9:19 PM

I always wondered…out of curiosity, how many registered commenters are there on Hot Air?

JetBoy on May 7, 2007 at 9:20 PM

Let’s give Bryan, Ian, and See-Dub their due.

…and having See-Dubya tied up here let me run rampant at his blog.

geoff on May 7, 2007 at 9:40 PM

Traffic last week was actually up from the same week the month before. Let’s give Bryan, Ian, and See-Dub their due.

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 8:45 PM

And us lowly participants, too. Traffic might not have been nearly so high last week if some of didn’t p*ss people off with our comments. Some us even got banned. (Re-instate Pinky posts in 3..2..1)

CyberCipher on May 7, 2007 at 9:55 PM

Great interview!

Stevel on May 7, 2007 at 9:56 PM

We know you support the entire team Michelle. But blogs are free fire zones sometime and Allah just put a target on his own martyred back.

It was too much fun to ignore. But then that is part of the reason this site is so great.

William Amos on May 7, 2007 at 10:07 PM

BTW, GREAT interview Michelle! And Bryan too.

Oh, yeah, and Allah, if it makes ya’ feel better, you should know that even though it’s “advantage Bryan” (at least as far as Michelle is concerned), given a level playing field with the babes at large, I could more than hold my own with Preston (well, at least as long as I kept my mouth shut). I’m a regular babe magnet, ya’ know.

CyberCipher on May 7, 2007 at 10:12 PM

Hot Air is my first stop, first thing in the morning and my last one before I go to bed. It’s a great combination of the different types of conservatism. The interview simply reinforced what I already knew.

Superb work, all around. I can’t thank you guys enough.

An Aside:

I like not being the only conservative atheist. It’s the only place I don’t feel entirely out of place.

Krydor on May 7, 2007 at 10:16 PM

You know how in award shows they always thank Deity? Maybe Michele didn’t want to be like everyone else, O temperamental One.

ulyses on May 7, 2007 at 10:17 PM

My favorite part was where y’all talked about the importantce of “transparency” in the media.

Ali-Bubba on May 7, 2007 at 10:18 PM

given a level playing field with the babes at large, I could more than hold my own with Preston

I don’t know, dude. He outclasses me, although admittedly that’s no trick. I suspect he was a babe tractor beam in his single days.

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 10:20 PM

Also, the importance of SPELLING ….

Allahpundit on May 7, 2007 at 10:20 PM

Nah. I’m guessing Bry’s a late-bloomer. Cool now, but a total geek in his youth.

If you were casting a movie about Bryan Preston’s high school days, he would definitely be played by Jon Cryer or Michael Anthony Hall. In his mind, maybe he was Charlie Sheen or Chad Lowe, but only in his mind.

Ali-Bubba on May 7, 2007 at 10:33 PM

I don’t know, dude. He outclasses me, although admittedly that’s no trick. I suspect he was a babe tractor beam in his single days.

Hmm what Freud Dude would have to say about that.

- The Cat

P.S. Nothing, he’s dead Jim.

I know that and don’t call me Jim

MirCat on May 7, 2007 at 10:37 PM

Its a good interview, and offers a good picture of what Michelle and crew do. Much fairer than the Kurtz article.

Married men exude a confidence women love. No knock on Bryan of course, he’s an impressive chap, but you are a pretty witty b*ast’rd yourself, which ladies also love. And that is all the commentary ever from me in regard to attractive qualities of the men of this site.

Spirit of 1776 on May 7, 2007 at 10:44 PM

Mr. McCain: How do you see the evolving role of journalists — specifically newspapers — in the blogosphere? Can we be full participants?
Part1 Question2 Heh Heh McCain didn’t waste any time? Make em an offer he can’t refuse Michelle!

Definitely. No question.

Yes, they do love that, as long as there is a 6-7 figure salary that goes with it.

austinnelly on May 7, 2007 at 11:04 PM

as long as there is a 6-7 figure salary

if you’re paying them to laugh, I’d guess so, heh

Every time I’m in DC I make a point to pass by the Washington Times’ building. Tingles!

Bryan, in his bachelor days, always had a girlfriend when he wanted one. He had and has high standards and morales that he proudly wore on his sleeve. That limited his Chick pool though. I know he broke a few hearts a long the way. At least that’s the way I saw him. I remember that time ,waaay back, in first grade or kindergarten this girl was chasing him on the playground and he ran smack into a tree.

It is interesting to hear some of the behind the scenes chatter. It almost sounds as though Michelle has to be oh so careful in her words and attention or her children will think she is playing favorites ……

The little bits and pieces of behind the scenes info that come through add reality to the Hot Air crew and are interesting to fans such as myself. More Please!

omegaram on May 8, 2007 at 3:22 AM

Without yet having read the WT interview, I already get more of a charge out of the excellent work you folks do at HotAir than any other site I’ve read on the web – and I’ve read a few. HotAir is as probably about as good as it gets, and that’s pretty good!

SpartRan on May 8, 2007 at 9:37 AM

I really appreciate what all of you do here. Hotair is the only news site I check every day.

I hope the site continues to grow as word spreads about it.

As a male, I can announce we sometimes have fragile egos…and they need to be attended to from time-time. Such is life. ;)

Terrific interview though, especially re: Bush’s open boarder policy. Yeah, MM sure is soldier for BushCo!

Malpaso on May 8, 2007 at 12:18 PM

This was an interesting interview that often read like a panel discussion. Too bad the Washington Times doesn’t have a video component to their website where we could watch the unedited video.

ScottMcC on May 8, 2007 at 1:29 PM

It was a great article. I did notice Michelle’s site no longer has her picture and figured it was partly due to security.

It was several months back but the Windsor Star (Ontario, Canada) carried a story on bloggers and mentioned Michelle on the front page which was funny since they’re pretty far to the left.

Thank you all for your work!

Canadian Infidel on May 8, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Mrs. Malkin: Yeah, I do, it’s called “Vent” — I’m on there, at HotAir.com. The videoblog has been such a great adventure. We just celebrated our one-year anniversary, and there are things we do there that we couldn’t possibly do on cable news, let alone …

Mr. Eldridge: Like your cheerleading routine.

Mrs. Malkin: Yeah, exactly.

Does he know of the white flagging cheerleading routine because of research or is he a regular visitor? Of all the vents to cite as examples, this was his first recollection?

Allah, I can’t tell for sure whether there’s a tiny bit of genuine moping in all the playfulness, but you know we appreciate you, right? Your stuff shows a startling level of talent and wit that is equaled only by the very best in the blogosphere. I agree with Valiant, your compulsively readable and subtly written contributions make HotAir an addictive thing rather than simply a great video blog. There’s also a balance thing, with others providing the straight-ahead conservatism, and you providing the self-questioning side, almost as though you’re constantly expecting the opposition to start making sense, and sadly shaking your head when it doesn’t seem to happen. Keep up the good work.

Has the Hot Air Cartoon dude yelling at the camcorder gotten a little grey in his hair? Or has it always been like that? I know he has always had three teeth and Popeye arms and a lightning tongue.

This was my favorite quote

Mr. Preston: One of the big accusations that’s leveled at her all the time is that she’s a puppet for somebody, and I got to tell you, anybody that tries to make a puppet out of her is going to have a stump for an arm. It’s not going to work.

That’s a good one Bryan…
